McFall Fest is shaping up to be a highlight event for us. Thank you to the dozens of people who have stepped up to make a difference in our church and community by supporting the festival with your time, talents and re-
sources. Make sure you don’t miss this wonderful event. It is simply amazing what we have been able to put together to be a blessing to this community. From a live stage with multiple bands, to a Grant Street filled with almost 20 vendors, to a wonderful selection of Chinese Auction items, to an outstanding food selection, everyone will have a great time when they come to McFall Fest. Also featured is our Treasure Chest Resale Shoppe in Calvary Center Fellowship Hall, pumpkin and mum sales on the Calvary Center Porch, an outdoor popcorn machine popping away and a wonderful children’s area in the Trinity Center Parking Lot. Giggles the clown will be making his rounds and the bake sale will be filling our sweet tooth with all kinds of yummy treats. Tell your friends and neighbors that they will not want to miss this event! Even more details on pages 4,5 and 6.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY – OCTOBER 5TH
ALVIN CROSS DEDICATION ~ OCTOBER 19TH
Alvin Berthold was a dear friend and a great member of our congregation who passed very quickly from active service and ministry into an illness that would take his life. Many of us have felt that it would be very ap-propriate to honor Alvin in some way given his role of presence and ser-vice. A special cross has been custom crafted for the North entryway of Calvary Center which will remind us of him and his role as head usher. There will be a special presentation during worship and an unveil-ing and dedication of the cross along with special music by Karen Altman, one of his close personal friends.

Should Churches and Ministries Give Birth?
As I type this title for some reason it seems strange on the page. We do not often think of churches “giving birth” or having children. However, I think that it is a question worth asking and worth wrestling with. When this newsletter reaches your mailbox I will likely be in or just returning from Canton, Ohio studying under missiologist Alan Hirsch. In preparation for
this study trip our assignment is to read one of his books titled: The Forgotten Ways. His argument in the book is that the church in the West, meaning primarily Europe, North America, and Australia, has forgotten or lost track of certain methods and practices of the church that bring vitality and allow great movements of multiplication through the power of the Holy Spirit.
This concept of being fruitful through giving birth to new churches and ministries is a key component of the mis-sional strategy. His argument for this is quite bold as he says that a denomination that is not birthing new churches is like a whole generation of people who are unable to have children. If suddenly everyone in a particular generation realized that they were no longer fertile, there would be panic and for good reason. There would be an understand-ing that something must change for our families to continue. Bringing children into the world brings hope and vital-ity to our families. The argument is that bringing new ministries into the world brings the same vitality to our con-gregations.
While the concept of planting a church or giving birth to a new worshiping community may seem strange to us I think that it is important to remember that this is a part of our history. Irons Memorial Church is a daughter church of our congregation, planted through the leadership of Rev. William Irons. Those must have been exciting times as the church worked to plant a cross cultural congregation for the French speaking Belgium citizens right in our own community. They saw a language group in their midst that needed to hear the good news about Jesus and they planted a church. Those were great days and they had a connection with the culture that we might be a bit envious of today.
This idea of giving birth is not an easy one though. Sending members out of a congregation to do something new takes extreme faith and courage. We tend to have the view that we need every single member and that people only leave for mysterious or negative reasons. We fear for a church that seems to want for resources, and we wonder how long it will continue. I am convinced that God views things differently. He is the owner of all resources and truly provides everything that we need to fulfill his mission. When a church in faith sends some out because of their vision for mission, God’s heart is to raise up new members quickly to fill those gaps. Moves of faith are rewarded by a loving and faithful God. This is not limited just to churches. We aspire to give birth to other Christians as we en-gage in witnessing and evangelism, we seek to see multiplication of our small groups and other ministries so that we can have daughter groups. Children bring forth expanded vitality so does multiplication of ministry.
How do these ideas apply to us? Only the Lord can reveal that to us. The first step is to have a desire for the lost. This past month our Session members chose to have a day of fasting to help us develop a passion for the lost and seek new ways of ministering to our community. We are beginning a journey of seeking wisdom and vision and ask that you would pray for us. We love our church and expect it to flourish by the grace of God. We also want to see a broad move of the Spirit in our time carrying the seeds of faith to a generation that desperately needs them.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Justin

Together we will celebrate a day dedicated to the great people that lead the revival in faith and practice that created the Protestant church. Martin Luther, John Calvin and others served as essential voices in re-centering the church on the Scriptures and the sacraments. At the Refor-mation day celebration, we will be exploring our Reformed Presbyterian heritage. We will sing reformation hymns and affirm the five great commitments of the Reformation: Sola Scrip-tora (Scripture Alone), Sola Fide (Faith Alone), Solus Christus (Christ Alone), Sola Gratia (Grace Alone), Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone). These principles continue to guide us as we seek faithfulness in our own day. Join us for a special service of worship.
REFORMATION SUNDAY ~ OCTOBER 26TH
PIZZA WITH THE PASTOR
OCTOBER 19TH
We will be hosting a Pizza with the Pastor Event on Sunday October 19th following worship. The gathering is for anyone who is not a
member of our congregation but is interested in learning more about our mission and purpose as a church. You will have an opportunity to discuss membership possibilities and interact with Pastor Justin and several other church leaders. There is no cost for the event, but we would appreciate RSVP’s to Pastor Justin or to the church office. Childcare is available upon request.
CHILDREN ’S SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
The children are using Group’s LIVE curriculum this year. LIVE curriculum helps get our kids actually reading their Bibles... strengthening their Bible skills...and learning key Bible truths. Its large group/small group format is perfect for Sunday school with mixed-age groups of elementary kids.
The LIVE curriculum begins this year with “Getting to Know God: Bible Basics”.
The Jr./Sr. High School class will also be using LIVE curriculum. In a pluralistic culture filled with numerous voices and worldviews, how can we help our students more clearly understand, explain, and defend their Christian faith? The lessons in LIVE Apologetics will equip teenagers to do just that!
LIVE Apologetics will equip and encourage our students to clearly and effectively explain why they believe what they believe. And they’ll be prepared to respond to some of the worldviews they encounter, including atheism, ag-nosticism, Buddhism, and Islam.
SESSION TO SESSION MEETING ~ CAMP AGAPE
One of the things that our new denomination (ECO) challenges us and even requires us to do is to be a member of a Mission Affinity Group. These groups known as “MAGs” serve to unite particular churches at a leadership level so that they can encourage one another, share best practices and work together when possible. Our church is pleased to be involved in the first functioning MAG is our Presbytery. We have been involved in Pulpit Exchange, Pastor Covenant Groups, a Session prayer gathering, and common mission work. Now we have scheduled a special Ses-sion to Session meeting for November 1st at Camp Agape in Hickory. Our Session members will meet all morning with the Session members from Paris, New Hope, and Mingo Presbyterian Churches for encouragement, reflec-tion, and missional training. Please be in prayer for our leaders as we learn how to work together and encourage each other in the days ahead.

Renee currently works at our location on Thurs-day afternoon and evenings. She is a fully licensed counselor with additional credentials in children’s counseling and crisis response counseling. Our second counselor is Lori Harbert. Lori was just hired by Christian Counseling Associ-ates and will be focusing her work on Washington County. Pastor Justin will be meeting with her the first week of October and her work here will begin soon after that. Both counselors take multiple insurance plans for all those who may be their clients.

ROTHS ~ MINISTRY UPDATE LETTER
Dear McDonald Friends, Thank you for your May gift of $1,250 for our ministry. We so appreciate your partnership with us in taking the Gospel to the Pacific Islands! All three of us loved being a part of a missions’ project to New Caledonia from July 26th to August 8th. We (along with some American university students) focused on reaching
out to students at the University of New Caledonia. We found the students to be very open to discuss spiritual matters—even those who call themselves agnostics or atheists were willing to hear and consider our point of view about Jesus. It was truly fantastic! In the end, 18 indicated first time decisions for Christ—WOW! With our love and thanks, Melanie, Don & Jack Roths

Exciting News for December We are planning once again to do a community Cantata this year. We have selected a wonder-ful Cantata by Pepper Choplin called “Heart of Christmas”. Plans will soon be underway to call together fellow singers from our community and neighboring churches. If you are not an
active member of the Adult Choir but like to sing please consider joining us for this special event. Just see Syndria for details. And please mark your calendar now for the weekend of December 13th. We will determine at some point in the future if we will do a 1 night or 2 night event. I will also be seeking out some folks to help me with scenery, narrators, dancers and actors.
MINGO HAITI TRIP
Mingo Presbyterian Church (ECO) is sending a group to Haiti this January. If you are interested in joining them please contact Pastor Justin right away.
Our church is proud to possess a number of very distinguished plaques that honor servicemen from major wars in our country’s history. One of these plaques is in need of repair and resto-ration. The name plates are deteriorating and the characters are falling off as the adhesive used
to apply them fails. We have found a vendor who will essentially donate his time to create new name plates for us and install them on the plaque. We are in need of a volunteer who will make a list of all of the names (about 100) on the plaque and put them into an Excel spreadsheet in the order that they are found on the plaque. We will then send this document to the craftsman who will be able to engrave each individual name plate from the file. To vol-unteer for this task, please contact the church office.
