Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Dear Family and Friends,

As we approach our celebration of Sacred Heart Day I warmly invite parents, family members and alumnae to join us for the celebration of the Eucharist at 9.00am and to the Performing Arts Spectacular at 1.30pm. This day is integral to the life and spirit of our College for at its core is the celebration of love – the love of God for each of us – a love with no prerequisites and no limits! How blessed we are as heart people.

Please also consider joining us for a night of wonderful entertainment from our current and past students at our OLSH Stars evening advertised below. The talent in our OLSH community is quite extraordinary and just goes to show that…OLSH girls can do anything!

Never lose sight of Christ Jesus (Hebrews 12:3)

Always united in our shared OLSH Spirit.

Faith and Mission Year 11 Retreat

Whilst on retreat we were able to spend quality time with Ms O’Loughlin, where we were able to get advice and look back on our time at OLSH. We were also lucky enough to meet Moira Kelly (pictured above speaking to the students, and with Ms Oro, Sr Megan and Mrs Singh), a lady who changed the way many of us now perceive the world and who has become an inspiration and a role model. Many know Moira as the lady who helped the two conjoined twins, Trishna and Krishna. Moira takes a risk when no one else will and has never turned her back on an opportunity to help or save someone in desperate need. I think the biggest thing I took away from meeting her is to know every single person has a story, and instead of judging someone based on how they may look or act, we need to see them for who they are inside and what they can offer the world.

Chloe Armand

On retreat we spent a day with YLead, an organisation that "empowers young people to be their best and make a positive difference." We certainly had a positive experience, doing an array of activities, learning to work in a team and working towards being future leaders at OLSH College. As a year level we worked together to recreate the OLSH pillar artworks, discussed our strengths and weaknesses (giving each other compliments in the process!) and created a group dance using creativity and teamwork (also maybe a little rhythm). Overall, it was a beneficial experience in learning more about ourselves, as well as others around us that we don't always interact with. We would definitely have YLead visit us again!

Catholic Identity Survey

Thank you to those parents who participated in the Catholic Identity Survey:

Mrs R. Ancora, Mrs G. Austen, Mrs L. O’Connor, Mrs S. Zhevelyuk

We are most grateful for your input.

Year 11 Retreat cont… On our first day, we were asked to create a piece of art that represents what we present to others, and our true selves. We heard inspiring stories and reflections from students and teachers, who discussed times when they felt true to themselves and how they felt when not acting true to that.

Later that night, we split into House groups to create a song and dance that allowed us to explore what we value the most about OLSH and what we would like to develop in the community. We had some incredible dance performances and touching original songs. The winning act was from Sweeney!

Sr Megan Donohue fdnsc Deputy Principal Faith and Mission

Dear Lord,

We ask for your guidance during the next 18 months, as we finish our journey at OLSH College.

Help us to recognise our strengths so we can contribute to the wider community.

Lord hear us: We pray to the Lord.

That you will ease the pain of all who are ill; and bless them and those who care for them.

Lord hear us.

Curriculum News Canvas Coming Soon….. Launch to Parents…..

Canvas is the OLSH College LMS (Learning Management System).

For the past 12 months the teaching staff have been learning about a new way of developing and storing curriculum documents and resources and a new way of engaging our students in their learning.

Canvas enables teachers to create a variety of content for their classes, including content pages, quizzes, assignments & discussions. They can easily embed audio & video and broadcast to students. They can enter, track and provide student feedback quickly and easily.

Canvas enables students to access all assessment and course materials, view all due dates and receive timely feedback from their teachers. They can engage with audio and video interactions with both teachers and other students.

While teachers and students have begun exploring and using this tool throughout this year, by the end of the term parents will also have access to Canvas. This will enable parents to view marks & feedback, forthcoming assignments and due dates. Parents will be notified when work has not been submitted punctually and they will be able to receive communication from and send messages to individual teachers.

This is a significant and exciting change for learning and teaching at the College. Not only will it enable more flexibility with teaching and learning, it will ultimately change our method of reporting. It will significantly increase our capacity to provide timely feedback to both you, as parents, and our students, thereby enabling increased opportunities to improve student achievement.

In the next newsletter we include information about the launch process and the introduction timeline for parents.

Unit 1 and Year 10 Examinations Unit 1 and Year 10 mid-year examinations will be held from 8 June through to 15 June.

All Year 10 students are expected to attend their normal classes on 8 June unless they have a Unit 1 exam scheduled on that day. They may leave their regular classes to attend their exam.

Monday 12 June is the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday. No students are required at school on this day.

Wednesday 14 June is the GAT examination. Only students doing a Unit 3 and 4 subject are required to attend school to do the GAT. The school will be closed to all other students on this day.

During the exam period students in Year 10 and Year 11 only need to attend school when they have an exam. They are welcome to use the school library to study if they wish.

Unfortunately there is no time to schedule exams outside the exam block. If a student knows that she will miss an exam, she needs to contact Ms Amanda Malone to arrange a reschedule time. The reschedule time will be during the exam block.

Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions about the exam period. A copy of the examination timetable is on the following page.

RAIC Rotary Adventure in Citizenship From 6 to 13 May, I was involved in a program called Rotary Adventure in Citizenship which took twenty five Year 11 students from all across Australia to Canberra for Budget Week.

The program was run by the Rotary of Woden and Canberra, alongside the Parliamentary Education Office and was jammed packed with activities.

We visited the Australian War Memorial where we met a veteran of the Vietnam War and had dinner with cadets at Duntroon. We toured the High Court of Australia, witnessed the Budget Speech and the Budget Speech Reply, and took part in an election program ran with the Electoral Education Centre staff. We had the chance to speak to MPs and Senators, sat in on question time and much more.

Some highlights of the trip were the official opening by Hon.Tony Smith, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Hon.Stephen Parry, President of the Senate, as well as meeting our Members of Parliament individually. I was lucky enough to spend some time with Hon. Clare O’Neil, Member for Hotham and Shadow Minister for Justice.

RAIC was an opportunity I would repeat all over again in a heartbeat. I gained so much out of the week, including lifelong friendships, a further understanding of our Parliament and a passion to further pursue a career in politics. The week was an amazing experience and something I’d recommend to anyone going into Year 11, whether you are interested in politics or just want to learn more about being an Australian citizen and how our Parliament works.

Year 10 Work Experience 2017 Term 2 and April holiday work experience placements have concluded for now and will commence again in the July school holidays.

Congratulations to the Year 10 students who have completed their work experience. Reports coming through from the employees have been excellent. Each student receives an evaluation of the week which can be used in Year 12 to assist in getting into post school destinations.

For the July & September school holidays there are 22 students going out and in Term 3 a further 37 girls. This includes four students who have opted to complete two placements, a total of 81 students.

Well done Year 10s!

SCSA Athletics 12 May Congratulations to a record breaking OLSH Athletics team, well supported by Mrs Bronwyn Verrell, Ms Robyn Rayment, Ms Lauren Stent and Isabel Quintal. 67 energetic students from Years 7 to 12 attended the competition which was held at Lakeside Stadium. The weather was clear and sunny on Friday which allowed athletes to perform their best on the track, in the pits, and on the field. A close second place in a field of nine schools was an excellent result. Well done to the Seniors who placed second and the Inters who won their division. The Juniors came fifth in a very competitive division. Special mention to the following girls who broke OLSH records:

OLSH athlete of the day was Olivia May (Year 11) whose hard work, talent and dedication to training resulted in seven new OLSH records!

Community News The Courage to be Kind Presentation Anne Carey

How fortunate we have been to hear from the 2016 West Australian of the Year Anne Carey about her inspirational journey.

After 18 years as an OLSH Sister, Anne left the order and worked in health care. She spoke to OLSH families at a presentation last night about her decision to volunteer to nurse those afflicted with the deadly Ebola virus in Sierra Leone.

One would imagine this would have been a very difficult decision but Anne said in her presentation she felt that there really was no choice to make as helping others is paramount. She feels so strongly about this that she returned twice at great personal risk, but again she felt compelled to be there to comfort the sick and the dying.

Hearing about this experience could be considered confronting, but as Anne shared her story the overwhelming emotion was amazement at her bravery and her courage. Anne has proven time and time again to be a selfless person who stands up for those in need of help and she continues her work in the field of workplace bullying.

Anne has just been afforded one of the highest accolades from the International Red Cross when she was named as one of the few recipients of the Florence Nightingale Medal.

Anne also spoke to students yesterday and today and her messages are clear; do not be afraid to stand up for your beliefs, always be mindful of how you can help others and most importantly have the courage to be kind.
