Aloha from the Island of Hawaii! During 2007, Akamai University made sig-nificant advancements in recognition, as a quality educational institution, both within the USA and globally. Earlier in the year, Akamai was honored as an equivalent degree institution by the internationally accredited San Juan de la Cruz University, Costa Rica, a member of the University Consortium of Cen-tral America. We were honored to receive twinning status with this internationally ac-credited university. Our graduates may now have their credits and their degrees transferred to San Juan de la Cruz University, and upon validation, receive the equivalent credits and degree awards. Akamai was awarded educational affiliation with The Institute of Management Specialists, UK, for collaboration in development of postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma programs in Business Administration. Both pro-grams offer professional award eligibility with the Institute, a member body with the UK Group of International Professional Bodies. IMS awards are inter-nationally recognized as British Qualifications and are listed in the formal pub-lication of the British Council. Akamai’s community service program continues to contribute in a meaningful manner to the personal development of our Hawaii Island inmates in coopera-tion with the State Department of Public Safety. This past year, we were fortu-nate to add a Parenting Enrichment Program to our previous contributions in the areas of job readiness and basic computer skills training. It is an honor to have our non-degree programs respected within the prison system. In recognition for our advancements in support of inmate fathers, BSI International, Inc, publish-ers of In Search of Fatherhood Magazine, collaborated with Akamai in the crea-tion of a new Blog, The Fatherhood Club, designed to further support inmate fathers in their development as successful parents. Kind regards, Douglass Capogrossi, Ph.D.

Message from the President

Dr. Douglass Capogrossi

We at Akamai University sadly bid farewell to Dr. David L. Johnson, one of the former es-teemed academics of Akamai University, who passed away on September 28, from complica-tions of a gall bladder operation in a local hospital in his home-town at Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Johnson joined Akamai Uni-versity in 2003 and was one of the productive members of our Akamai Community in teach-ing, research, developing new courses and programs, as well as carrying on his own research and publishing. He will long be remembered by all of us for his exemplary contributions to the Akamai University community. In 2005, Dr. Johnson was appointed as the Director of the Center for Applied Psychology and Human Services. During this time he expanded the Center offerings to provide a compre-hensive array of courses in social and mental health ser-vices. As a Director, he was a productive participating mem-ber of the Academic Council and headed the Action Im-provement Committee, sug-gesting effective changes in the University’s programs and academic policies. Dr. Johnson had special train-ing and experience in stress management, hypnosis, aver-sion therapy, health and well-ness, tobacco and food addic-tions, training and education, applied field research and group dynamics. He was es-pecially proud of his partici-

pation in the early movement to broaden gifted and talented educa-tion beyond the academic and in his pioneering work in the behav-ioral identification of creativity, leadership, and communication skills in disadvantaged children and adults. His contributions to the field of personal and social development and health and wellness are many. He authored five systemic behav-ioral observation instruments (c.f.), Social Interaction and Creativity in Communication Systems, and 18 tape programs for personal and social development and health and wellness. He has also written and performed a variety of personal growth materials including three

tapes on tobacco-cessation. As a result of his extensive research in his subsequent book, Stop Smoking and Chewing Tobacco for LIFE

CHANGES (ISBN: 0-7414-0481-8 2000), written with his wife Carole, he became very pas-sionate about helping people quit smoking and chewing habits. He founded and provided free to-bacco-cessation services under the auspices of a not-for-profit “Healthy Life Changes” cadre of volunteers in the community. Through this endeavor he helped many people to quit their smok-ing and chewing habits. The goals of Healthy Life Changes were more generally to learn, write about , and apply social, psychological, and wellness in-formation to problems of tobacco cessation, stress management, behavioral changes, and creative solutions for healthy living.

Datuk Dr. Mohd Sofi Osman In the News about Industry-Academia Interdependency

Dr Mohd Sofi Osman, Executive Managing Director of AMD, Penang, a subsidiary of the global electronics multi-national-company AMD, was conferred the doctoral award honoris causa by Akamai University for his significant and continuous contri-bution towards charitable and noble activities for the betterment of the human condi-tion in Asia. Dr. Sofi has been in the media relative to his belief in the importance of proper dialogue and alignment of University programs with the needs of industry. In The Star, Malaysia, 29 July 2007, Dr. Sofi asserted that “a proper matchmaking body is required to bring electronic industry players and universities together to nur-ture the right talents for the right market demand.” He believes that “without such a mechanism, it would be difficult for the electronic players to pull in the right talents to work for them.” Dr. Sofi further stated in the Star that "microelectronics is not just about designing integrated circuits. The field also covers material and simulation

process technologies, to name a few. Thus, without a knowledgeable matchmaking body, the electronics in-dustry may end up with the wrong kind of engineer."
