HORSE: Seis So Sweet, my wife calls her Biscuit but her family (Van-sickle’s) Call her “Six”Buckskin Mare, 4 years old, 15 hands, 1050-1100 lbs.OWNER: Bruce & Connie VansickleHORSE HISTORY: Heath Boucher is friends with the Vansickle fam-ily and he asked me if I would ride a horse for them. They wanted to pick their own horses. I usually like to pick the horses and the breeding I have the most success with so I didn’t really want to ride for them. Seis So Sweet went through the Heritage Place sale and I had tried to buy the horse but Danny Ray outbid me. Ray ended up bringing her to the OKC BFA sale when she was a 2 year old. I bid on her at the sale but Connie Vansickle actually ended up buying her and after the sale Connie asked me if I would ride her because she thought I would like the pedigree. She was broke to ride when I got her but we put all the barrel training on her. Their whole goal with Seis So Sweet was to have a horse their daughter Valerie could ride at the end of her futurity year. So I wanted to train the horse so that Valerie could ride Seis So Sweet. I never let anyone else ride my 3 year olds but Valerie actually rode Seis So Sweet in the Slot Races at OKC and also at the LG Pro Classic and my assistant trainer, Chaz Maturin, actually made it to the Finals at the Josey Jr World on her in addition to me winning around $68k this year so far. Seis So Sweet has handled everything well. She has a very good mind. All my helpers have rode her and loped her and she is a really broke riding son of a gun, but when it is showtime and you run down the gate, she has an amazing work ethic. My ultimate goal as a trainer is to sit in the bleachers and watch someone else ride my horse and the horse goes where it should no matter what the rider does and Seis So Sweet has really shown she is that type of horse.BIT: Two bridles, schooling bit is a Kit’s bit, her running bit is a Mahue O-Ring Twisted wire, Seis So Sweet has a custom headstall from Cowboy GearHEADGEAR: Flat leather tiedown, custom from Cowboy Gear. TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: The biggest thing I focused on teaching her was to go forward because she had so much rate and desire to turn. That was probably the biggest challenge I have had to get her to clock big. She nailed her fi rst and second perfect, she stepped off her third but I just let her run and she ran hard all the way to the dark (out the back of the arena) until I grabbed her. She will run as hard as she can all the way home, she stays really honest. KEY TO CONTINUED TO SUCCESS: I was always a stay close to home trainer, but about 10 years ago I made a conscious effort to be a com-petitor and not just a trainer. I wanted to take these competition skills and add them to my training program. I didn’t want to just start nice horses, I wanted to get the dough too. I realized I didn’t only need to just train the horses well, I have to actually go fast. The recent success I have had is a product of this process. I still continue to work on my skills as a trainer, competitor and person everyday and being sur-

Brownie Jones, 1985-May 31, 2011 The Jud Little Ranch’s great sire Brownie Jones passed away at the ranch on May 31 at the age of 26. Brownie Jones was one of the last Sons of Pa Jones out of the great mare Cherry Clabber by Clabber Bar Sr. Brownie Jones sired many great barrels horses including the 2008 BFA Junenile Futurity Champion Boogie Woogie Jones. Fly First Down Tops Ruidoso Qualifi ers Francisco Colorado Cessa’s Fly First Down, a $300,000 yearling purchase, set the fastest-qualifying time of 17.502 to the Grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity on Friday at Ruidoso Downs. The 10 fastest 2-year-olds from the 21 trials are eligible for the 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity, the fi rst leg of the All American Triple Crown, on June 12. A First Down Dash son from the stable of 9-time national cham-pion trainer Paul Jones, Fly First Down dominated the 11th trial. The 2010 Ruidoso Select Sale purchase sprinted to the lead from the outside post position and then drew out to a 3-length victory under jockey G.R. Carter.Fly First Down “I’ve really like him since he arrived in our barn about three months ago,” said Lisa Saumell, who heads the Jones operation in New Mexico. “He’s built like (2-time champion) Noconi. He’s not too big, he’s not too small, and he’s smart. He’s built for this moun-tain and should like to run further (than 350 yards).” Jones won last year’s Ruidoso Futurity with American Runaway, who went on to be named the 2010 champion 2-year-old and cham-pion 2-year-old colt.

Jones also has the leading 2-year old at Los Alamitos this season with Separate Fire, winner of the Grade 1 Kindergarten last Sunday night in stakes-record time. TMF Cash Dynasty, owned by Sunset Well Service and trained by Albert Franco, stepped up as 12-1 outsider to win the 19th trial with the second-fastest qualifying mark of :17.602. The FDD Dynasty-sired colt was overlooked after crossing the fi nish line in seventh place in his only other start. He pulled away for a one-and-one-quarter length Ruidoso Futurity trial victory. Trainer John Stinebaugh has two solid prospects, Sure Shot B and Tex Cartel B, in the Ruidoso Futurity. Charles Forbes Jr. and Tommy Hays’ Sure Shot B, a son of Stoli, raced to his second win from as many starts when he won his Rui-doso Futurity trial by a neck as the 3-5 favorite. Jacky Martin, who qualifi ed four fi nalists, rode the gelding raced to the third-fastest qualifying mark of :17.605. Sure Shot B made his debut in the West Texas Futurity trials and won his trial, but his time was not quick enough to reach the fi nals. “He was in the 10 hole and ran green,” said Stinebaugh. “It gave us more time to bring him up to this race.” Tex Cartel B, also ridden by Martin, took the 15th division by three quarters of a length and his time of :17.670 is the eighth-fastest qualifying mark. The Corona Cartel son also made his only other start in the West Texas Futurity trials and fi nished sixth in his heat. “He lost a shoe at the start and that caused him to drift out,” Stinebaugh said. “These are each two big stout boys who look the part,” Stine-baugh said. Silver For Me, the lone $15,000 supplemental nominee to the Rui-doso Futurity, reached the fi nals with a three-quarter length win in the 14th trial for trainer Jackie Riddle. He turned in a :17.629 mark for the fourth-fastest qualifying time under jockey Carlos Madeira. The gelding by Corona For Me was second in the Sam Houston Juvenile at Sam Houston Race Park in his previous out. West Texas Futurity fourth-place fi nisher Valiant Valor returns for the Ruidoso Futurity by winning his trial after bobbling at the start and bumping with a rival. He won the Old Fort Days Futurity that year, was 5th in the Old Fort Days Derby last year and won the Old Fort Days Derby this year. THE RUNDOWN: LEEANN RUSTHORSE: SS Streakers R Us “Harley”Bay Gelding, 9 Years old, 15.3 hands, 1250 lbs.HORSE HISTORY: My ex-husband Gary Rust and I actually pur-chases his sire, Scenics Symbol, 15 years ago. He was a great horse, he was actually a APHA World Champion in Heeling, earned halter points and won a variety of other awards. Sy, as we called him, ac-complished all this with very little riding and training. I really liked Harley’s (SS Streakers R Us) mother (The Sixth Sense) so I bred her to Sy. The fi rst colt of the cross was crippled and had a cleft pallet and didn’t make it. People told me I better not breed her back the same way because it would happen again but I bred her back on her foal heat and the next year came SS Streakers R Us. From the time Harley was born we knew he was special and wouldn’t sell him. I broke him and I picked Gena Franklin to do all the foundation work on him because she rides the most like me during his 3 year old career. Then Sharin Hall took him during his futurity year. Then after that I have had him the whole time. The last couple years I was seasoning him, getting him ready. Then last fall he started stepping up to a higher level and I knew it he was ready for the next level. We just keeping getting more confi dent in each other and I think he can get even better yet. He really showed me a lot at Grand Prairie and it was exciting for me to win my very fi rst prorodeo buckle. He has probably earned at least 50-60k in his career already. When I go up the alley if I concentrate on making a technically perfect run, then the speed will come. When you put speed above technique, you lose both. Every horse is built a little different and so will have a slightly different style, so towards then end of a horse’s train-ing, you need to let them have some freedom to do it the way they best can according to their conformation. I give horses a lot of room around a barrel when they are young and they will tighten up on their own as you add speed. But, I’m a winner”! This was a line in a country western song that came out a few years ago. I can’t remember exactly how it went but

apparently the guy liked to get in fi st fi ghts and his face showed the damage it had received. He proudly listed his scars and then proclaimed, “But, I’m a winner!” As Christians we sometimes feel like that. We feel battle scarred and weary but, like the guy in the song, we know we’re winners! When we got born again, we became a member of God’s family and entitled to all the rights and privileges that go with that. It says in 2 Corinthians 14, “Thanks be to God who always causes us to triumph in Christ...” Read 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 and see the trials that Paul went through without being defeated. Romans 8:37 tells us we are more than con-querors through Him who loved us. John 3:16 says God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. We need to under-stand just how much God loves us and that He desires all men to be

saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). No matter what is going on in your life now, our God is bigger than any problem you have. Jesus has the answers and He’ll help you through any problem you have. If you’ve never made Him the Lord of your life you can do it right now. According to Romans 10:9, “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” So say out loud, “Lord, I repent of my sins and ask you to forgive me. Wash me in your blood, Jesus. I make you my Lord and Savior.” Now, you really are a winner!
