New Beginnings

The 2011 Fall term marks a new beginning for us. All the reviews, phase

outs, and transfers are done. We now are truly the Department of Sport

Management. As noted in the last newsletter the program is based on four

pillar areas: Finance/Economics, Legal Issues, Marketing, and Media &

Culture. Our enrollment numbers for the Fall term were strong at all three

levels. We had our highest number of applicants ever seeking admission to

the Undergraduate and Masters programs respectively. We are excited about

our future and the opportunities ahead. In future newsletters we will provide

updates on how the program continues to grow and improve.

Ups & Downs in 2011

At this time last year we were devastated to learn that Mrs. Cynthia Bailey was diagnosed with

neuroendocrine tumors (NET). Mrs. Bailey began and completed several rounds of treatment for her

cancer. We had the opportunity to celebrate her life, retirement, and after a year of fighting shared in

the family’s sorrow at Mrs. Bailey’s passing over the summer. She was a tremendous lady who will

be missed.

One of our “ups” has been the addition of a new faculty member. We were very excited to have

Dr. Joshua Newman join the SPM family. Dr. Newman came to Florida State from the University of

Otago in New Zealand. Dr. Newman’s expertise will further strengthen our Media & Culture pillar.

Stay tuned for a special feature on Dr. Newman in a future newsletter.

We have been fortunate to add two additional staff members to the SPM family this year. Mr. Juan

Gonzalez has taken on the Academic Program Specialist position. This is a new position for us, and

will include a much larger role in management of the Master’s program, along with numerous

administrative responsibilities. Ms. Lisa Hodges joins the group as our Financial Services Specialist.

She will make sure all the numbers balance, and has a pivotal role in our financial management

activities. More inside...

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

We are not done growing...We were very excited to learn that we will be able to add another

faculty member to the SPM family. We received approval to search for an Assistant or Associate

Professor, who will begin work at FSU in August 2012. We will be working to add a faculty

member to further strengthen one of the pillar areas. We will make a special effort to hire at the

Associate level (as we did with Dr. Newman).

Welcome back...We have gone too long without a student association. Thanks to the initiative

of our students, we are pleased to announce the start up of the Sport Management Student

Association. The current President, Ms. Lindsey Bowker, took the initiative, along with other

interested students, to complete all the steps required by the university to get the association

started once again. In future newsletters we will be adding a special section for news and notes

from the SMSA. If you have questions about the association, please contact Ms. Bowker at

[email protected].

Dr. M. Dianne Murphy Lecture Spring 2011

As one of the most respected administrators in collegiate athletics, Nora Lynn Finch joined the

ACC as Associate Commissioner and Senior Women Administrator in 2008 after spending 31

years at NC State, she was responsible for overseeing the administration of women’s basketball,

men and women’s gold, men’s soccer, postseason appearances, facilities, the Athletics equipment

room operations, and fundraising for women’s scholarships endowment and facilities.

Nora Lynn Finch spoke on the importance of connecting with people and networking.

Reminding students to be nice to people and use each experience as a stepping stone for your

next job. “People won’t remember what you said in an interview but they will remember how you

made them feel.” She encouraged students to be careful what they say, because it has a way of

coming true.

Each Spring semester, the Sport Management faculty members

invite a distinguished guest to speak with students, faculty, and

community members on the roles of persons of color and

women administrators in college and university athletics and

Sport Management programs. The establishment of this lecture

series has been made possible by a generous gift to the College

of Education by one of our alumna, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy,

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education at

Columbia University in New York City. In 2011 we were proud

to host Nora Lynn Finch. Nora Lynn Finch

MORE DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

No, the news is not about the Global Sport Management program — that information is on another page

in the newsletter. From Fall 2010 through Summer 2011, we hosted a friend and colleague from Japan,

Junya Fujimoto. Junya spent the year with us as a Visiting Research Scholar. While in Tallahassee he

completed the translation of a Sport Marketing textbook from English to Japanese, prepared a journal

article for submission, delivered guest lectures and participated in the Sport Marketing seminar, and wrote

a grant with Dr. James for a research project, and the grant was funded! Junya “set the pattern” for visiting

scholars; we had a fantastic experience together, and are planning to continue hosting international

scholars.

The hosting continues...Dr. Kim made arrangements to host a post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Woong

Kwon during the 2011-2012 academic year. Dr. Kwon comes to us from Hanyang University. His research

interests include Sport Marketing and Analysis of Sport Consumer Behavior.

Not quite done...In Spring 2012 we are pleased to announce that we will be hosting Dr. Li-Shiue Gau as

a Visiting Research Scholar. Li-Shiue is an alum of the doctoral program. He will be teaching some for us,

along with working on various research projects.

We Are Going International

The department hosted the 13th annual Sport Management Conference September 29th and 30th. Over two hundred and fifty students attended the event held in the Varsity Club in Doak Campbell Stadium. Industry Speakers represented the Tampa Bay Rays, Fox Sports, the PGA Tour, the Atlantic Coast Conference, World Endurance Sports Group, and iGaming System. A new feature this year was a greater focus on industry-based speakers. There were industry speakers Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. On Friday afternoon a Research Roundtable was held with Dr. Daniel Wann, Dr. Daniel Funk, and Dr. Jeffrey James. The key note address Thursday evening was given by Florida State Football’s Defensive Coordinator, Mark Stoops. A second new feature in 2011 was the 1st annual Internship Fair. Representatives from the Florida Coaches Association, GameTime Travel, the Daytona International Speedway, Bike Florida, the FSU Career Center, Florida Panthers, and the FSU International program were able to send a representative to speak to students. Over thirty organizations were represented through flyers and promotional materials, and over one hundred applications were available for review by FSU students.

GLOBAL SPORT MANAGEMENT

In Summer 2012 students will again have the opportunity to study abroad,

based in London, England. The program will include meetings with officials from

governing bodies in the United Kingdom and local sport organizations. Students

will have the opportunity to attend in-season sporting events, including trips to

the Wimbledon Championships and the Open Championships. The program will

also include tours of notable sport facilities such as Emirates Stadium, Wembley

Stadium, and Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The year 2012 will be very special for those participating in the Global Sport

Management program. The Olympic Games will be held in London in Summer

2012; the courses will include an additional focus on various aspects of the Games

including financing, infrastructure development, event management, and

sponsorship. As a special experience, participants will have an opportunity to

attend some of the London 2012 Olympic Games. We anticipate the trip to be a

once in a lifetime experience.
