With the recent release of informationon the Defense Advanced ResearchProjects Agency (DARPA) so-namedsmart bullets, it is worth noting that anon-lethal smart bullet is availablefrom a Colorado company.

DARPA’s Extreme Accuracy TaskedOrdnance (EXACTO) programannounced their development of a self-steering bullet. Their live-fire testsshowed experienced and inexperi-enced shooters repeatedly hitting mov-ing targets with smart bullets ablefollowed them.

A Brighton, Colorado company has adifferent take on smart bullets. Smart-Rounds Technology, LLC’s smart bul-lets can sense the target and burst priorto hitting it. Upon burst, different non-lethal releases can disable the targetwithout killing.

Defending oneself without fearingmurder charges, or having lawsenforced without concern of causingdeath, are appealing ideas. Smart-Rounds Technology’s products focuson disabling without taking a life, ver-sus the DARPA product more effec-tively getting a bullet into its target.

According to SmartRounds Technol-ogy, their smart projectile is equippedwith two micro-sensors that turn around on when fired, and then activatethe round milliseconds before impact“utilizing our airburst technology.”

Four types of smart projectiles areplanned, with some already available.ShockRounds™ which are designed toproduce a high pressure pulse; Pepper-Rounds™ which disperse a burningspray; RepelRounds™ which douse thetarget with a foul smelling odorant; and

HemiRounds™ which are electroshock“stun” rounds.

According to Nick Verini, CEO ofSmartRounds Technology, “The mostinterest has been with our Shock-Rounds (flash bang) and our HemiR-ounds (electroshock).”

Rounds may be fired from a 12-gaugeshotgun, or a special launcher that thecompany produces. Following testingand completion of a funding campaign, commercial production will include therounds and launchers.

Shades of GreySome situations are viewed in black andwhite; right and wrong. Yet, manypeople think situations also have a greyarea where solutions are not so easilydiscerned. This is about the choicespeople make, and the thought processthey go through to arrive at decisions.

Consider: Submitted for DiscussionWhile you are enjoying a day out, yousee three people arguing on the side-walk ahead. People around them arewatching.

As you get close, you see one of thebystanders reach out and steal a cellphone from the back pocket of one ofthe women in the argument. No oneelse seems to see.

Do you think that you would approachthe woman about the theft you thinkyou saw? Or, do you think that youwould be more likely to walk away andavoid getting pulled into an argument?

Man Against Machines. What Price Modernity? As the enabling

technology is becoming available, recently there were voiced fearsregarding the development andproduction of “knowing sentient andautonomous” artificial intelligencedevices which they may then decide toset us, their creators, aside, all resultingin catastrophes or even our veryextinction.

A remarkable living genius whocontributed a lot about the origin of theuniverse and stars and who also — inspite of suffering from an advanced stageof muscular dystrophy — making himunable to move or talk. (He now speaksthrough a computer which is able topicking up twitching of his cheek!) Herecently voiced fear of us creatingartificial life — super intelligent robots.

Here is the headline: “Stephen HawkingFears Artificial Intelligence Could SpellMankind Doom” (He’s Not the OnlyOne.)

I thought of a question about a problemhe may not have considered: Humansevolved to create “meaning”; plus, theybond, they have continuous sensualenthusiasm, they love, they dream of thefuture, they create. Humans have faiths, beliefs and narratives regarding theirindividual selves as well for their tribe;plus, altruism. Humans are eager tocontribute and leave a mark behind; asideof the unfortunate occasionalaggressiveness against each other.

Will the Artificial Intelligence devices/Robots, have all that? Or, in their super-rationality will they decide to commitsuicide out of their super-intelligentmeaninglessness? After all, intelligenceis only a tool. It does not have wisdom, acapacity to love or suffer, or an ability tolook forward to the next day.

I wonder: Did Hawkins and othersconsidered that?

Little BitsChuckle of the IssueTwo factory workers are talking. The woman says, “I can make the boss give me the day off.”

The man replies, “And how would you do that?”

The woman says, “Just wait and see.” She then hangs upside-down from the ceiling.

The boss comes in and says, “What are you doing?”

The woman replies, “I’m a light bulb.”

The boss then says, “You’ve been working too much and you need some rest. I think you need to take the day off.”

She leaves, and the man starts to follow her out. The boss says to him, “Where are you going?”

The man says, “I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark.”
