Singaporersquos First Premier Lee Kuan Dies at 91
Lee Kuan Yew the first prime minister and important political figurehead of Singapore since the countryrsquos inde-pendence in 1965 died Monday at the age of 91
ldquoMr Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore Gen-eral Hospitalrdquo the announcement from the Prime Ministerrsquos Office said ldquoArrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral proceedings will be announced laterrdquo
Mr Lee led Singaporersquos transition from British colonial rule to democracy in 1965 after first joining Malaysia in 1963
As the leader of the Peoplersquos Action Party which was responsible for guiding the transition he won election as the first prime minister of the fledgling democracy Mr Lee remained prime minister for 25 years before handing over leadership in 1990 after which he moved into the advisory role of senior minister
Mr Leersquos style of government was often criticized for its authoritarian characteristics including suppressing free-dom of speech and limiting public assembly but was also a rare example of pragmatic and incorrupt government in the region
Singapore has since become an economic powerhouse and a vital center for international finance and business Mr Lee often described Singapore as a ldquoFirst World oasis in a Third World regionrdquo
Germanwings Co-Pilot Responsible for Plane
Crash in France
A Germanwings co-pilot deliberately crashed his plane into the French Alps Tuesday according to French officials The plane was en route to Duumlsseldorf Germany from Barce-lona Spain was carrying 150 people who all died in the crash
Investigators initially thought that the crash was an ac-cident before recovering the planersquos voice recorders The cockpitrsquos voice recorders captured the last minutes of the flight during which the captain could be heard pleading for the co-pilot to open the door
Andreas Lubitz the co-pilot identified by French inves-tigators reportedly locked the captain out of the cockpit before taking control of the plane Mr Lubitz was initially talkative but became ldquolaconicrdquo in the words of French in-vestigators during the middle of the flight
In the final moments before the crash the captainrsquos pleas to return to the cockpit became more frantic and shouting could be heard coming from the passenger section The voice recorder revealed normal breathing in the cock-pit indicating that Mr Lubitz was aware of his actions
The investigation is likely now to turn from the crash itself to focus on Mr Lubitz and his mental state before the crash A similar incident happened in 1999 when an EgyptAir flight crashed in the Atlantic Ocean after it was determined that the co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane
Situation in Yemen Worsens as Saudi Arabia
Starts Air Strikes
Saudi Arabia and a coalition of other nations started military operations in Yemen Wednesday to halt the ad-vance of Houthi rebels who have taken control of large swaths of the country
Saudi Arabia joins nine other countries in launching air and ground operations in the country The operations are largely seen to secure the long border the nation shares with Yemen Reports from previous weeks said that Saudi Arabia had been amassing troops along the border
The situation in Yemen has continued to deteriorate after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels pushed into the south-ern half of the country forcing President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee the capitol The presidentrsquos wherea-bouts are still unknown
Yemen is also in the midst of dealing with an active campaign by an offshoot of al Qaeda called al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula The region has become the focus of American counterterrorism operations including drone

Students have expressed concern and confusion over work that began this week on improvements being made to Lost Creek the stream that runs along the Student Recreation Center (SRC)
The Indiana Department of Trans-portation (INDOT) are making the im-provements as part of the local IN641 by
-pass project focusing on mitigating the effects of the by-pass on the local water-shed Particular changes include reno-vating the embankments stream path and the flow of the stream with particu-lar attention paid to reducing erosion
Jacob Campbell Director of Envi-ronmental Health and Safety informed students faculty and staff of the project and the disruption to campus as INDOT works on the improvements This was the first time that students were notified of the changes that were to be made to campus
What students were not informed of are the substantial changes being made to the campus Work began by cutting down many of the trees that line the stream including trees between the Apartment Residence Halls and the SRC parking lot Trees along the stream be-hind Cook Stadium have also been marked for removal
Concerned students have questioned why the project has required so many trees to be removed for making improve-ments to the stream
ldquoWhen I first saw all the tree stumps I was a little shockedrdquo freshman Jane Sahabu a member of the Home for Envi-ronmentally Responsible Engineers (HERE) program said ldquoIt seemed to me counterintuitive to remove trees that help stop soil erosionrdquo
Students were also upset at the cost
of chopping down trees that are a part of the scenery on campus
ldquoI am not excited about the changes being made to campusrdquo freshman me-chanical engineer Dan Engstrom said ldquoI think wersquore going to lose a lot of the beauty of the campus and future stu-dents are going to lose out as a result of itrdquo
Although some students were con-fused as to why the improvements were being made civil engineering students are acutely aware of the case for making the improvements ldquoAlthough I hate to see them cut down the trees the im-provements are necessary to improve the water quality of the watershedrdquo jun-ior civil engineer Isaac Gehman ldquoThe project is really about meeting state re-quirements for maintaining the water-shed and improvements to Lost Creek should do sordquo
Students with more knowledge on the subject have suggested that the costs are outweighed by the benefits Another civil engineering student junior Gene Kum corroborated Mr Gehman rsquos state-ment adding that the ldquobanks have been unstable and the trees are nonnative and a pestrdquo Mr Kum also said that ldquotheyrsquore doing it for a reasonhellip it might actually help the creekrdquo
The main issue for those upset is the lack of information available to students about the work being done With a weekrsquos notice and a short email about the closing of the road behind the Hul-man Memorial Student Union students were caught off guard when they saw
entire rows of trees being cut down Students are eager for answers about how this program is going to affect the campus whether or not administrators will respond is the question that needs to be answered

removal of trees has caused confusion and upset among students unaware of the improvements

SWERY is one strange
Japanese man Developer of
the cult classic ldquoDeadly
Premonitionrdquo SWERY has
been picked up by Microsoft
Studios to release his latest
work ldquoD4 Dark Dreams
Donrsquot Dierdquo on Xbox One
The player takes control
of David Young a private
detective who was once a
cop He left the force after
the death of his wife a case
that he is still trying to solve
Suffering from amnesia of
the day of her death David
only remembers her last
words ldquoLook for Drdquo This
being the only hint David
must look for ldquoDrdquo and solve
who killed his wife In the
process he is proving that
he is not D (his name is Da-
vid after all)
ldquoD4rdquo takes elements
from classic adventure
games newer classics from
TellTale Games and a buck-
et full of Japanese craziness
to craft something entirely
unique The game was de-
signed for Kinect though I
opted for playing with the
controller Pointing is the
main gameplay mechanic I
can see how that would work
great with Kinect and by all
accounts the game seems to
be one of the better Kinect
experiences available on
Xbox One You explore the
environment looking for
clues and talk-
ing to suspects
There are a lot
of different in-
teractions with
characters and
dialogue trees
similar to Tell-
Tale rsquos ldquoThe
Walking Deadrdquo
But the key to
this game is how
SWERY has
translated the mechanics to
be distinctly Japanese For
example rather than just
talking to people you have
the option to push them
eliciting different types of
conversations
ldquoD4rdquo has an intriguing
story The world is odd
which played a part in hav-
ing me on the edge of my
seat the entire time Charac-
ters are incredibly original
and interesting They donrsquot
follow typical archetypes
that tend to be played out
For example one character
is a cat lady but not the kind
of cat lady you think she
literally thinks she is a cat
She wears a bow and has a
collar She even chases mice
and meows Incredibly weird
characters like this made
every interaction in the
game interesting and fun I
kept moving through the
plot and talking to everyone
just to see what they would
say or do next
The game takes place in
Boston but it is clear that
the designer of the game
SWERY has absolutely no
idea what Boston is actually
like or how people in Boston
actually talk They have long
conversations about Boston
foods such as clam chowder
It shows that SWERY knows
that they are known for it
but itrsquos so blunt and lasts so
long that it just comes off
that SWERY clearly has no
idea And why should he
He is a Japanese game de-
signer who visits the
United States a few
times a year at most
He may not have even
been to Boston All of
this sounds like I am
ragging on the game
but in reality all of the
oddities that SWERY
brings to the world
really makes the game
If this was a straight-
forward mystery game
set in Boston it would be
super boring Seeing how
SWERY tries to translate
what he knows about the
United States into a story
and misses the point so of-
ten is a highlight because it
is so hilarious You never get
mad about the misunder-
standings It just so appeal-
ing in an odd way that you
want to learn about the crazy
alternate Boston this mad-
man has crafted
My only real complaint
about ldquoD4rdquo is that the game
has a pointless energy sys-
tem You have to keep eating
or else David will pass out
from exhaustion But the
simplest things drain a ton
of energy Every time you
talk it takes off one percent
off the meter and something
as simple as moving a table
takes around 15 percent
This leads to tons of food
being available in the envi-
ronment even if it makes
absolutely no sense For ex-
ample part of the game
takes place on a plane I was
running low on energy and
found an entire hamburger
and fries dinner along with a
drink in the overhead bin
That is insane Though one
could say this adds to the
charm of the game I found
it to be more frustrating
ldquoD4rdquo is a solid game for
Xbox One Itrsquos definitely not
a typical experience and has
quite a few quirks but at its
core the game is just a fun
time and is totally worth
checking out

Like most PC users I love Steam
sales There is always the temptation
to grab a game for a ridiculous bar-
gain and sometimes itrsquos just too
good to pass up Such was the case
with the recent 2K anniversary sale
last weekend Included in that was
ldquoSid Meierrsquos Civilization Beyond
Earthrdquo and ldquoSid Meierrsquos Starshipsrdquo
ldquoBeyond Earthrdquo is the next in-
stallment in the extremely popular
and extraordinarily addictive Civili-
zation series which tasks players
with raising a civilization one city at
a time The big change with this new
game is that as the title suggests
you are not on
earth anymore
and are instead
colonizing an
a l ien wo rld
Gone are the fa-
mous historical
figures like Attila
the Hun Alexan-
der the Great
and the nuclear
warmonger Ma-
hatma Gandhi
The basis for this
colonization is
grounded in the
ldquoGreat Mistakerdquo
some kind of
global cataclysm
that made the
entire Earth un-
livable In the
chaos that fol-
lowed new pow-
ers began to
emerge some
fusions of exist-
ing countries we
know today
some radically
different Notable examples include
the American Reclamation Corpora-
tion a corporation that literally
bought America from the US gov-
ernment Polystralia consisting of
Australia and the pacific islands and
the Slavic Federation the USSR
reborn
The basics of the gameplay have-
nrsquot changed too drastically in the
jump to the far reaches of the uni-
verse but there are some notable
new features that may excite (or con-
fuse) veteran Civilization players
Most of the Civilization staples are
still present some with more tweaks
than others The barbarians have
been replaced with the native life
forms of the new world and the
technology tree is no longer linear
but rather a large nonlinear web for
researching new technology
The biggest addition is the Affin-
ity system Almost every action you
take in game from researching to
exploration adds to one of three Af-
finity levels Purity Harmony and
Supremacy Each of these can
change the game in new and exciting
ways
Purity stems from the age-old
belief that humanity is better than
any species it could come across in
this case that would be the native
ldquoalienrdquo(since you are technically the
alien on this world) life Purity soci-
eties attempt to stay as ldquoEarth-likerdquo
as possible using mech-suits and
domes to keep themselves isolated
from the new world
Supremacy strives to improve
humanity in any way possible most
often through advanced robotics and
cybernetics They replace everything
with sleek robotic designs and even-
tually rely on combat robots and un-
manned vehicles to fight their bat-
tles
A Harmony society accepts the
new surroundings and attempts to
coexist with the native life It strives
to be at one with the new ecosystem
even genetically modifies itself to
adapt to the ecosystem and eventu-
ally can create its own versions of the
native life
The game plays exactly like any
other Civilization game before it
although this game succeeds in cre-
ating an atmosphere of wonder and
overwhelming naiveteacute as you venture
out into the unknown Most of that
stems from the minimal tutorials
and the large scope of the lands It
takes much longer to explore this
new frontier the native lifeforms are
more numerous than barbarians ever
were and they can quickly over-
whelm you without much notice
The new tech trees are generally con-
fusing and itrsquos hard to understand
why interstellar travelers have to
research Physics again I am looking
forward to playing this game a lot
then seeing what crazy mods the
community will come up with

If you have gained the confidence to ask
your crush out congratulations for having
the courage to do so in the first place If they
said yes itrsquos time to start planning the big
first date Most of you have your ideal date
scenario in mind but just in case yoursquore a bit
lost I have several tips that can help you
Before you go out do some research on
what your crush is interested in Are they
into movies sports nature or other hob-
bies If you both have something in common
or some common activity the two of you want
to try go for it
Do not take that person to something that
you like and they will hate You want the
date to be enjoyable for the both
of you not just the one
The conversations held on a
date are one of the most im-
portant parts Make it the goal of
the date to get to know the other
person better If the conversation
focuses on you too much try to
shift it over to the other person
Listen closely when your crush
is talking and be ready to respond
with a follow-up question One
word responses are the gateway
to awkward pauses which should
be avoided
Always maintain confidence
Do not ask questions like ldquohow do
you think the date is goingrdquo or
ldquoare we a good matchrdquo These
questions make you appear insecure in your
date planning skills as well and can ruin the
date quickly Just remember that you asked
the person out and they said yes

Last week it felt like spring was starting
to come around This week however the
weather has been nothing but the ghost of
winters past Who knows when the weath-
er will start to stabilize Until then
here is a list of things to keep
you occupied during this tumul-
tuous purgatory between spring
and winter
The one task that is somewhat easier to
complete during this limbo season is
homework The only things that can dis-
tract you are inside activities When you
finish watching your favorite
show or playing a game you can
try to start homework When
spring comes around the temp-
tation to procrastinate will be
even stronger as you will have
distractions both inside and out
Try to take advantage of these
rainy brisk days to train yourself
to power through the homework
because the temptation to blow it
off during the warm months will
be twice as high
While the weather is still cold
take advantage of the main com-
modities of fall and winter
sweaters and warm drinks This
is the last time to experience this
sweater weather so to speak As
soon as spring rolls around the
sweaters go away
Additionally your craving for
warm beverages midday general-
ly will subside when those 80-
degree days roll around Start
thinking of a cold midday caf-
feinated drink substitute for
spring and summer months be-
cause the weather could change
in the blink of an eye
Another thing to take care of
during spring is your car Now is
a great time if you havenrsquot al-
ready to get your car washed and
clean it out for those spring
drives Before you take a day trip
to Indianapolis or another big
city be sure to get your tires
filled with air Though itrsquos a
chore your wallet will thank you
when you save on gas
I for one am very impatient and
cannot wait for spring to get started
However though the weather is
still gloomy there are plenty of
things to enjoy and do during
this unusual time

Ah pasta a food that most of
us have become experts of in col-
lege A particular favorite is
macaroni and cheese For the
limited amount of time we get
for cooking here are two recipes
for quick and on-the-go mac and
cheese
These recipes can get you out
of the kitchen quickly and back
to doing what you need to do to
survive Rose-Hulman
If you need to grab food on the
go these mac and cheese muf-
fins go where you go
2 cups cooked warm elbow mac-
aroni pasta
1 tablespoon butter
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
1 frac12 cups shredded sharp ched-
dar cheese
1 frac12 cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
frac12 cup seasoned dry bread
crumbs
2 teaspoons olive oil
frac12 teaspoons olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 de-
grees Grease a muffin pan and
mix together the bread crumbs
olive oil and salt in a bowl
In another bowl stir in the
butter and egg until the pasta is
evenly coated Stir in one cup of
cheddar cheese Add the milk
mozzarella and cheese into the
pasta and transfer the mixture to
the muffin tin Top the
muffins with the cheddar
cheese and breadcrumb
mixture
Bake the muffins for
30 minutes in the oven or
until the toppings are
nicely browned Once
done allow the muffins to
cool in the pan before re-
moving them
By allowing them to
cool in the pan the
cheese has time set and
the muffins will hold
their shape
If you do not have the time
to make muffin-sized pasta
and are lacking those instant
macaroni cups this quick
macaroni recipe will get you
fed and back to work
13 cup pasta
frac12 cup water
frac14 1 milk
frac12 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Add the pasta and water in a large
mug or bowl Microwave the pasta
and water for two minutes and
stir several times
Place the cup or bowl in the
microwave for another two to
four minutes stirring at each
two-minute interval The pasta
should cook through but if it
doesnrsquot add another teaspoon of
water and microwave for another
minute
Remove the mixture from the
microwave and stir in the milk
and cheese Microwave for an-
other minute and stir The pasta
is ready to eat

As residents of the Apartments
East Residence Hall my roommates
and I enjoy the relaxation of cooking
our own dinner most nights Because
of this our kitchen is a very im-
portant part of our experience here
at Rose and so far it has served its
purpose reasonably well
There are minor issues like the
stove hood not actually venting any-
where except back in your face but
the stove hasnrsquot broken the oven
hasnrsquot broken the fridge has broken
and the sink hasnrsquot broken yet With
that said taking a closer look at each
part of the kitchen reveals more
The kitchen island is a fairly
standard layout with a sink in
the middle and bar seating on
the opposite side
This is where your main
counter space is probably going
to end up if yoursquore anything like
my roommates and have a micro-
wave a coffee maker or any oth-
er appliance normally kept on
the counter
To this end the island countertop
space is big enough to fit the largest cut-
ting boards I have ever seen which makes
it really plenty reasonable especially if you
move the bar chairs to use that space as
well This also leaves an equivalently sized
countertop area on the other end of the
island by the wall which is less accessible
but includes an outlet
Really the most serious problem
with the island is that there isnrsquot an outlet
on the non-wall side of the island making
using appliances an issue sometimes
On the other side of the kitchen
we have the main counter with the
fridge and oven stovetop combo On
this side of the kitchen we find a lot
more outlets for plugging in things
like your microwave or toaster oven
The stove itself is just as good as any
other electric stove though the dial
placement does leave something to
be desired when yoursquore making pasta
and trying to turn off the burner us-
ing the dial directly behind the pot
The oven on the other hand
definitely leaves you wanting The
ovens in the Apartments do not in-
clude either an internal light or a
viewing window both of which are
features on my old homersquos 40-year-
old oven
Quite frankly I donrsquot understand
those design choices since in order
to check on whateverrsquos baking I have
to open the oven get out my cell-
phone turn on my cellphone light
and then look at my food This is
wasteful of both heat and effort
when in any other oven you could
just press a button to turn on the
light and glance through the window
Above all of
this we have
the cabinets
and stove
hood As
p r e v i o u s l y
m e n t i o n e d
the stove
hood doesnrsquot
actually do anything to help be-
sides blow greasy air in your face
if you actually turn it on It does
however come with a sometimes
useful light
The cabinets are fairly stand-
ard affairs and donrsquot have any
particular problems
The kitchen layout as a whole
is fairly reasonable with lack of
built in storage space being the
only problem That is easily
solved by purchasing your own
shelving unit though
There is space for three or
four people to stand in the kitch-
en without undue bumping of
elbows and therersquos plenty of
room for your old bottles to sit
up on top of the cabinets
Overall the kitchen is a fair-
ly good kitchen with no particu-
larly serious issues even if the
oven design makes no sense
A rare occurrence of our kitchen being clean

I do not mind sitting indoors while trying to get some
work done but the spring weather that has been coming
back lately has made it harder and harder to focus It is a
little better where there are no windows such as a Crapo
classrooms but then there is a feeling of sitting in a prison
cell and being isolated from the weather outside In Olin
the large spans of glass between the outside and the class-
room can be too distracting or too eerie
The one place on campus where a nice balance
seems to have been struck is in the Logan Library
In the back corner of the first floor is the large
conference room and the size of the windows in
that room is just right Goldilocks herself would
approve of the middle ground these openings
strike
The first accolade for these windows is the appropri-
ate level of exposure I have heard the complaints that
those windows are more like archerrsquos slits in a castle wall
but I think this is too hasty of an assessment They do not
let in a lot of sunlight but that also means they keep in a
lot of focus on the meeting topics on hand Besides who
doesnrsquot want to feel like he is sitting inside the walls of a
castle
It is a lot easier to keep the mind from wandering
without the imagery of classmates frolicking in the Quad
during the spurts of nicer weather It is also a lot easier to
keep from feeling dreary during the spurts of gray weath-
er that come back to haunt us during the fickle springtime
in Indiana There is just enough isolation offered to allow
a view of the outdoors when sought and to prevent acci-
dentally daydreaming otherwise
An added benefit that comes from the narrow size of
these windows is the privacy Sometimes I just do not
want to look up and see someone staring into my class-
room at what is being done or by whom on his way past
In this meeting room I do
not have to worry about
that Those windows are so
narrow that only a truly
dedicated observer who is
willing to hoist himself
right up to the slit and peer
into it would be able to
watch me and my team-
mates at work I like to
think someone else on
campus would knock him
right off his step stool or
ladder and tell him to stop
being such a creepy person
Finally it provides me
with the opportunity to
observe passersby unno-
ticed Sure I do not want
anyone else peering into
the windows at me but I
do not see the harm in peo-
ple watching if no one is
upset by noticing From the
end of the table farthest from that delightfully propor-
tioned slit in the wall it is possible to cast an eye out onto
the sidewalk I can take note of what the latest clothing
styles are how much the wind is going to later perturb my
hairstyle and which individuals have the bad habit of
spitting onto the sidewalks The best part is that no one
else in the meeting will suspect my wandering attention
since it does not often occur to them that anything inter-
esting could be observed through such a small opening in
the wall

Over the weekend Rose baseball
took two of the three-game
series against Defiance
College in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Confer-
ence (HCAC) opener Jun-
ior pitcher Andrew Stull
pitched a complete shutout
on Saturday as the Engi-
neers topped Defiance 4-0
behind a third-inning tri-
ple by junior Patrick Klima
and a single from junior
Kody Alayon
The bottom of the fifth saw Na-
tional Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) Division Threersquos (D-III) first
triple play of the season as Alayon
snagged a line drive stepped on sec-
ond and threw out the runner tag-
ging up on first to send the Yellow
Jackets out of the inning with noth-
ing
On Sunday Rose
split the double-
header against De-
fiance The first
game was largely
uneventful and saw
no runs scored un-
til Defiancersquos Chris
Donese scored on a
wild pitch in the top
of the eighth
Donesersquos run would
be the only one of the
game with Rose falling 1-0 In the
second game Rose found their bats
again and smacked 13 hits with the
help of three hits and three RBIs
from both Klima and second
baseman junior Caleb Kissel The
Engineers put up three runs in
the second inning one in the
third and then another three
later in the game Defiancersquos
lone run came in the top of the fifth
when Defiancersquos Zack Reed singled
to left center The Engineers won the
game 7-1 and currently stands at 7-
6 (2-1 HCAC)
The next time to catch the
Engineers is the three-game se-
ries at home against Manchester

The menrsquos track team placed first and the womenrsquos team placed
second of seven teams at the Early Bird Invitational on Saturday

individual victories for senior Blake Schulthies (who was later named
the conference Menrsquos Track Athlete of the Week) Schulthies won the
100-meter hurdles the 400-meter hurdles the javelin throw and
was part of the winning the 1600-meter relay
Senior Vashon Solomon followed suit and swept the jumping
events winning both the long jump and the triple jump Sophomore
throwers Andrew Okruch (shot put) and Nic Keller (discus) both had
good days as well winning their respective events
On the womenrsquos side sophomore Gabi Razma who was
named as the Womenrsquos Conference Track Athlete won her
triple jump event with a 35rsquo 10rdquo which is good for second in
school history Razma also won the 200-meter dash Junior
Addie Johnson combined forces with sophomore Christine
Harper Razma and freshman Victoria Heckenlively to set
the school record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of
40562 Johnson then went on to win the 400-meter hur-
dles

Rose softball has had an excellent season so far
and entered this weekend at a 7-3 record On Satur-
day Rose swept the Milwaukee School of Engineer-
ing (MSOE) in two excellent displays of offense re-
cording at least seven runs in both victories and shut-
ting out MSOE both times
In the first game junior pitcher Marrisa Stout
notched her fifth victory of the year and allowed five
hits and no runs For the first five innings no team
scored but then freshman Gabbi Markison took
charge and smacked home two RBIs Freshman Jes-
sica Will and senior Carly Heibel and junior Jett
Bender all notched hits as well
In the second game Rose didnrsquot hesitate to
get the bats swinging and scored six runs in
the first inning RBIs from Miller Heibel Lake
(2) Bender and Markison put Rose up 6-0
after one inning of play The score would re-
main unchanged until the bottom of
the third which saw Heibel hit her
15th career home run and drive
home two RBIs

Conference (HCAC) champion in 2014 shot a 7978 over the two-
day Mount St Joseph Invitational over the weekend that helped the
Engineers take seventh of 15 teams Parkrsquos rounds were good enough
for ninth overall The next-best Rose finisher was sophomore Luke
Peoples who shot an 8380 (Good for 23rd) followed closelyby fel-
low sophomore Sam Pastoriza with an 8381
Wednesday the gold team beat Wabash in the annual
Little Giant-Engineer Cup to retain the Cup for the second
matchup in a row (the two schools matched up in the fall)
The event is scored by nine head-to-head stroke play match-

Warren Whithaus and Chris Lambert took home two of the
match play matches and Rose then went on to take five of
the nine head-to-head matches

a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4)

off his nomination for Conference Player of
the Week won first singles 6-0 6-3 and then
1-0 (10-6) The next three matches all won by
Adam Metzger and Conrad and ended in
straight sets in favor of Rose Freshman Derek

Singaporersquos First Premier Lee Kuan Dies at 91
Lee Kuan Yew the first prime minister and important political figurehead of Singapore since the countryrsquos inde-pendence in 1965 died Monday at the age of 91
ldquoMr Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore Gen-eral Hospitalrdquo the announcement from the Prime Ministerrsquos Office said ldquoArrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral proceedings will be announced laterrdquo
Mr Lee led Singaporersquos transition from British colonial rule to democracy in 1965 after first joining Malaysia in 1963
As the leader of the Peoplersquos Action Party which was responsible for guiding the transition he won election as the first prime minister of the fledgling democracy Mr Lee remained prime minister for 25 years before handing over leadership in 1990 after which he moved into the advisory role of senior minister
Mr Leersquos style of government was often criticized for its authoritarian characteristics including suppressing free-dom of speech and limiting public assembly but was also a rare example of pragmatic and incorrupt government in the region
Singapore has since become an economic powerhouse and a vital center for international finance and business Mr Lee often described Singapore as a ldquoFirst World oasis in a Third World regionrdquo
Germanwings Co-Pilot Responsible for Plane
Crash in France
A Germanwings co-pilot deliberately crashed his plane into the French Alps Tuesday according to French officials The plane was en route to Duumlsseldorf Germany from Barce-lona Spain was carrying 150 people who all died in the crash
Investigators initially thought that the crash was an ac-cident before recovering the planersquos voice recorders The cockpitrsquos voice recorders captured the last minutes of the flight during which the captain could be heard pleading for the co-pilot to open the door
Andreas Lubitz the co-pilot identified by French inves-tigators reportedly locked the captain out of the cockpit before taking control of the plane Mr Lubitz was initially talkative but became ldquolaconicrdquo in the words of French in-vestigators during the middle of the flight
In the final moments before the crash the captainrsquos pleas to return to the cockpit became more frantic and shouting could be heard coming from the passenger section The voice recorder revealed normal breathing in the cock-pit indicating that Mr Lubitz was aware of his actions
The investigation is likely now to turn from the crash itself to focus on Mr Lubitz and his mental state before the crash A similar incident happened in 1999 when an EgyptAir flight crashed in the Atlantic Ocean after it was determined that the co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane
Situation in Yemen Worsens as Saudi Arabia
Starts Air Strikes
Saudi Arabia and a coalition of other nations started military operations in Yemen Wednesday to halt the ad-vance of Houthi rebels who have taken control of large swaths of the country
Saudi Arabia joins nine other countries in launching air and ground operations in the country The operations are largely seen to secure the long border the nation shares with Yemen Reports from previous weeks said that Saudi Arabia had been amassing troops along the border
The situation in Yemen has continued to deteriorate after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels pushed into the south-ern half of the country forcing President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee the capitol The presidentrsquos wherea-bouts are still unknown
Yemen is also in the midst of dealing with an active campaign by an offshoot of al Qaeda called al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula The region has become the focus of American counterterrorism operations including drone

Students have expressed concern and confusion over work that began this week on improvements being made to Lost Creek the stream that runs along the Student Recreation Center (SRC)
The Indiana Department of Trans-portation (INDOT) are making the im-provements as part of the local IN641 by
-pass project focusing on mitigating the effects of the by-pass on the local water-shed Particular changes include reno-vating the embankments stream path and the flow of the stream with particu-lar attention paid to reducing erosion
Jacob Campbell Director of Envi-ronmental Health and Safety informed students faculty and staff of the project and the disruption to campus as INDOT works on the improvements This was the first time that students were notified of the changes that were to be made to campus
What students were not informed of are the substantial changes being made to the campus Work began by cutting down many of the trees that line the stream including trees between the Apartment Residence Halls and the SRC parking lot Trees along the stream be-hind Cook Stadium have also been marked for removal
Concerned students have questioned why the project has required so many trees to be removed for making improve-ments to the stream
ldquoWhen I first saw all the tree stumps I was a little shockedrdquo freshman Jane Sahabu a member of the Home for Envi-ronmentally Responsible Engineers (HERE) program said ldquoIt seemed to me counterintuitive to remove trees that help stop soil erosionrdquo
Students were also upset at the cost
of chopping down trees that are a part of the scenery on campus
ldquoI am not excited about the changes being made to campusrdquo freshman me-chanical engineer Dan Engstrom said ldquoI think wersquore going to lose a lot of the beauty of the campus and future stu-dents are going to lose out as a result of itrdquo
Although some students were con-fused as to why the improvements were being made civil engineering students are acutely aware of the case for making the improvements ldquoAlthough I hate to see them cut down the trees the im-provements are necessary to improve the water quality of the watershedrdquo jun-ior civil engineer Isaac Gehman ldquoThe project is really about meeting state re-quirements for maintaining the water-shed and improvements to Lost Creek should do sordquo
Students with more knowledge on the subject have suggested that the costs are outweighed by the benefits Another civil engineering student junior Gene Kum corroborated Mr Gehman rsquos state-ment adding that the ldquobanks have been unstable and the trees are nonnative and a pestrdquo Mr Kum also said that ldquotheyrsquore doing it for a reasonhellip it might actually help the creekrdquo
The main issue for those upset is the lack of information available to students about the work being done With a weekrsquos notice and a short email about the closing of the road behind the Hul-man Memorial Student Union students were caught off guard when they saw
entire rows of trees being cut down Students are eager for answers about how this program is going to affect the campus whether or not administrators will respond is the question that needs to be answered

removal of trees has caused confusion and upset among students unaware of the improvements

SWERY is one strange
Japanese man Developer of
the cult classic ldquoDeadly
Premonitionrdquo SWERY has
been picked up by Microsoft
Studios to release his latest
work ldquoD4 Dark Dreams
Donrsquot Dierdquo on Xbox One
The player takes control
of David Young a private
detective who was once a
cop He left the force after
the death of his wife a case
that he is still trying to solve
Suffering from amnesia of
the day of her death David
only remembers her last
words ldquoLook for Drdquo This
being the only hint David
must look for ldquoDrdquo and solve
who killed his wife In the
process he is proving that
he is not D (his name is Da-
vid after all)
ldquoD4rdquo takes elements
from classic adventure
games newer classics from
TellTale Games and a buck-
et full of Japanese craziness
to craft something entirely
unique The game was de-
signed for Kinect though I
opted for playing with the
controller Pointing is the
main gameplay mechanic I
can see how that would work
great with Kinect and by all
accounts the game seems to
be one of the better Kinect
experiences available on
Xbox One You explore the
environment looking for
clues and talk-
ing to suspects
There are a lot
of different in-
teractions with
characters and
dialogue trees
similar to Tell-
Tale rsquos ldquoThe
Walking Deadrdquo
But the key to
this game is how
SWERY has
translated the mechanics to
be distinctly Japanese For
example rather than just
talking to people you have
the option to push them
eliciting different types of
conversations
ldquoD4rdquo has an intriguing
story The world is odd
which played a part in hav-
ing me on the edge of my
seat the entire time Charac-
ters are incredibly original
and interesting They donrsquot
follow typical archetypes
that tend to be played out
For example one character
is a cat lady but not the kind
of cat lady you think she
literally thinks she is a cat
She wears a bow and has a
collar She even chases mice
and meows Incredibly weird
characters like this made
every interaction in the
game interesting and fun I
kept moving through the
plot and talking to everyone
just to see what they would
say or do next
The game takes place in
Boston but it is clear that
the designer of the game
SWERY has absolutely no
idea what Boston is actually
like or how people in Boston
actually talk They have long
conversations about Boston
foods such as clam chowder
It shows that SWERY knows
that they are known for it
but itrsquos so blunt and lasts so
long that it just comes off
that SWERY clearly has no
idea And why should he
He is a Japanese game de-
signer who visits the
United States a few
times a year at most
He may not have even
been to Boston All of
this sounds like I am
ragging on the game
but in reality all of the
oddities that SWERY
brings to the world
really makes the game
If this was a straight-
forward mystery game
set in Boston it would be
super boring Seeing how
SWERY tries to translate
what he knows about the
United States into a story
and misses the point so of-
ten is a highlight because it
is so hilarious You never get
mad about the misunder-
standings It just so appeal-
ing in an odd way that you
want to learn about the crazy
alternate Boston this mad-
man has crafted
My only real complaint
about ldquoD4rdquo is that the game
has a pointless energy sys-
tem You have to keep eating
or else David will pass out
from exhaustion But the
simplest things drain a ton
of energy Every time you
talk it takes off one percent
off the meter and something
as simple as moving a table
takes around 15 percent
This leads to tons of food
being available in the envi-
ronment even if it makes
absolutely no sense For ex-
ample part of the game
takes place on a plane I was
running low on energy and
found an entire hamburger
and fries dinner along with a
drink in the overhead bin
That is insane Though one
could say this adds to the
charm of the game I found
it to be more frustrating
ldquoD4rdquo is a solid game for
Xbox One Itrsquos definitely not
a typical experience and has
quite a few quirks but at its
core the game is just a fun
time and is totally worth
checking out

Like most PC users I love Steam
sales There is always the temptation
to grab a game for a ridiculous bar-
gain and sometimes itrsquos just too
good to pass up Such was the case
with the recent 2K anniversary sale
last weekend Included in that was
ldquoSid Meierrsquos Civilization Beyond
Earthrdquo and ldquoSid Meierrsquos Starshipsrdquo
ldquoBeyond Earthrdquo is the next in-
stallment in the extremely popular
and extraordinarily addictive Civili-
zation series which tasks players
with raising a civilization one city at
a time The big change with this new
game is that as the title suggests
you are not on
earth anymore
and are instead
colonizing an
a l ien wo rld
Gone are the fa-
mous historical
figures like Attila
the Hun Alexan-
der the Great
and the nuclear
warmonger Ma-
hatma Gandhi
The basis for this
colonization is
grounded in the
ldquoGreat Mistakerdquo
some kind of
global cataclysm
that made the
entire Earth un-
livable In the
chaos that fol-
lowed new pow-
ers began to
emerge some
fusions of exist-
ing countries we
know today
some radically
different Notable examples include
the American Reclamation Corpora-
tion a corporation that literally
bought America from the US gov-
ernment Polystralia consisting of
Australia and the pacific islands and
the Slavic Federation the USSR
reborn
The basics of the gameplay have-
nrsquot changed too drastically in the
jump to the far reaches of the uni-
verse but there are some notable
new features that may excite (or con-
fuse) veteran Civilization players
Most of the Civilization staples are
still present some with more tweaks
than others The barbarians have
been replaced with the native life
forms of the new world and the
technology tree is no longer linear
but rather a large nonlinear web for
researching new technology
The biggest addition is the Affin-
ity system Almost every action you
take in game from researching to
exploration adds to one of three Af-
finity levels Purity Harmony and
Supremacy Each of these can
change the game in new and exciting
ways
Purity stems from the age-old
belief that humanity is better than
any species it could come across in
this case that would be the native
ldquoalienrdquo(since you are technically the
alien on this world) life Purity soci-
eties attempt to stay as ldquoEarth-likerdquo
as possible using mech-suits and
domes to keep themselves isolated
from the new world
Supremacy strives to improve
humanity in any way possible most
often through advanced robotics and
cybernetics They replace everything
with sleek robotic designs and even-
tually rely on combat robots and un-
manned vehicles to fight their bat-
tles
A Harmony society accepts the
new surroundings and attempts to
coexist with the native life It strives
to be at one with the new ecosystem
even genetically modifies itself to
adapt to the ecosystem and eventu-
ally can create its own versions of the
native life
The game plays exactly like any
other Civilization game before it
although this game succeeds in cre-
ating an atmosphere of wonder and
overwhelming naiveteacute as you venture
out into the unknown Most of that
stems from the minimal tutorials
and the large scope of the lands It
takes much longer to explore this
new frontier the native lifeforms are
more numerous than barbarians ever
were and they can quickly over-
whelm you without much notice
The new tech trees are generally con-
fusing and itrsquos hard to understand
why interstellar travelers have to
research Physics again I am looking
forward to playing this game a lot
then seeing what crazy mods the
community will come up with

If you have gained the confidence to ask
your crush out congratulations for having
the courage to do so in the first place If they
said yes itrsquos time to start planning the big
first date Most of you have your ideal date
scenario in mind but just in case yoursquore a bit
lost I have several tips that can help you
Before you go out do some research on
what your crush is interested in Are they
into movies sports nature or other hob-
bies If you both have something in common
or some common activity the two of you want
to try go for it
Do not take that person to something that
you like and they will hate You want the
date to be enjoyable for the both
of you not just the one
The conversations held on a
date are one of the most im-
portant parts Make it the goal of
the date to get to know the other
person better If the conversation
focuses on you too much try to
shift it over to the other person
Listen closely when your crush
is talking and be ready to respond
with a follow-up question One
word responses are the gateway
to awkward pauses which should
be avoided
Always maintain confidence
Do not ask questions like ldquohow do
you think the date is goingrdquo or
ldquoare we a good matchrdquo These
questions make you appear insecure in your
date planning skills as well and can ruin the
date quickly Just remember that you asked
the person out and they said yes

Last week it felt like spring was starting
to come around This week however the
weather has been nothing but the ghost of
winters past Who knows when the weath-
er will start to stabilize Until then
here is a list of things to keep
you occupied during this tumul-
tuous purgatory between spring
and winter
The one task that is somewhat easier to
complete during this limbo season is
homework The only things that can dis-
tract you are inside activities When you
finish watching your favorite
show or playing a game you can
try to start homework When
spring comes around the temp-
tation to procrastinate will be
even stronger as you will have
distractions both inside and out
Try to take advantage of these
rainy brisk days to train yourself
to power through the homework
because the temptation to blow it
off during the warm months will
be twice as high
While the weather is still cold
take advantage of the main com-
modities of fall and winter
sweaters and warm drinks This
is the last time to experience this
sweater weather so to speak As
soon as spring rolls around the
sweaters go away
Additionally your craving for
warm beverages midday general-
ly will subside when those 80-
degree days roll around Start
thinking of a cold midday caf-
feinated drink substitute for
spring and summer months be-
cause the weather could change
in the blink of an eye
Another thing to take care of
during spring is your car Now is
a great time if you havenrsquot al-
ready to get your car washed and
clean it out for those spring
drives Before you take a day trip
to Indianapolis or another big
city be sure to get your tires
filled with air Though itrsquos a
chore your wallet will thank you
when you save on gas
I for one am very impatient and
cannot wait for spring to get started

Ah pasta a food that most of
us have become experts of in col-
lege A particular favorite is
macaroni and cheese For the
limited amount of time we get
for cooking here are two recipes
for quick and on-the-go mac and
cheese
These recipes can get you out
of the kitchen quickly and back
to doing what you need to do to
survive Rose-Hulman
If you need to grab food on the
go these mac and cheese muf-
fins go where you go
2 cups cooked warm elbow mac-
aroni pasta
1 tablespoon butter
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
1 frac12 cups shredded sharp ched-
dar cheese
1 frac12 cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
frac12 cup seasoned dry bread
crumbs
2 teaspoons olive oil
frac12 teaspoons olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 de-
grees Grease a muffin pan and
mix together the bread crumbs
olive oil and salt in a bowl
In another bowl stir in the
butter and egg until the pasta is
evenly coated Stir in one cup of
cheddar cheese Add the milk
mozzarella and cheese into the
pasta and transfer the mixture to
the muffin tin Top the
muffins with the cheddar
cheese and breadcrumb
mixture
Bake the muffins for
30 minutes in the oven or
until the toppings are
nicely browned Once
done allow the muffins to
cool in the pan before re-
moving them
By allowing them to
cool in the pan the
cheese has time set and
the muffins will hold
their shape
If you do not have the time
to make muffin-sized pasta
and are lacking those instant
macaroni cups this quick
macaroni recipe will get you
fed and back to work
13 cup pasta
frac12 cup water
frac14 1 milk
frac12 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Add the pasta and water in a large
mug or bowl Microwave the pasta
and water for two minutes and
stir several times
Place the cup or bowl in the
microwave for another two to
four minutes stirring at each
two-minute interval The pasta
should cook through but if it
doesnrsquot add another teaspoon of
water and microwave for another
minute
Remove the mixture from the
microwave and stir in the milk
and cheese Microwave for an-
other minute and stir The pasta
is ready to eat

As residents of the Apartments
East Residence Hall my roommates
and I enjoy the relaxation of cooking
our own dinner most nights Because
of this our kitchen is a very im-
portant part of our experience here
at Rose and so far it has served its
purpose reasonably well
There are minor issues like the
stove hood not actually venting any-
where except back in your face but
the stove hasnrsquot broken the oven
hasnrsquot broken the fridge has broken
and the sink hasnrsquot broken yet With
that said taking a closer look at each
part of the kitchen reveals more
The kitchen island is a fairly
standard layout with a sink in
the middle and bar seating on
the opposite side
This is where your main
counter space is probably going
to end up if yoursquore anything like
my roommates and have a micro-
wave a coffee maker or any oth-
er appliance normally kept on
the counter
To this end the island countertop
space is big enough to fit the largest cut-
ting boards I have ever seen which makes
it really plenty reasonable especially if you
move the bar chairs to use that space as
well This also leaves an equivalently sized
countertop area on the other end of the
island by the wall which is less accessible
but includes an outlet
Really the most serious problem
with the island is that there isnrsquot an outlet
on the non-wall side of the island making
using appliances an issue sometimes
On the other side of the kitchen
we have the main counter with the
fridge and oven stovetop combo On
this side of the kitchen we find a lot
more outlets for plugging in things
like your microwave or toaster oven
The stove itself is just as good as any
other electric stove though the dial
placement does leave something to
be desired when yoursquore making pasta
and trying to turn off the burner us-
ing the dial directly behind the pot
The oven on the other hand
definitely leaves you wanting The
ovens in the Apartments do not in-
clude either an internal light or a
viewing window both of which are
features on my old homersquos 40-year-
old oven
Quite frankly I donrsquot understand
those design choices since in order
to check on whateverrsquos baking I have
to open the oven get out my cell-
phone turn on my cellphone light
and then look at my food This is
wasteful of both heat and effort
when in any other oven you could
just press a button to turn on the
light and glance through the window
Above all of
this we have
the cabinets
and stove
hood As
p r e v i o u s l y
m e n t i o n e d
the stove
hood doesnrsquot
actually do anything to help be-
sides blow greasy air in your face
if you actually turn it on It does
however come with a sometimes
useful light
The cabinets are fairly stand-
ard affairs and donrsquot have any
particular problems
The kitchen layout as a whole
is fairly reasonable with lack of
built in storage space being the
only problem That is easily
solved by purchasing your own
shelving unit though
There is space for three or
four people to stand in the kitch-
en without undue bumping of
elbows and therersquos plenty of
room for your old bottles to sit
up on top of the cabinets
Overall the kitchen is a fair-
ly good kitchen with no particu-
larly serious issues even if the
oven design makes no sense
A rare occurrence of our kitchen being clean

I do not mind sitting indoors while trying to get some
work done but the spring weather that has been coming
back lately has made it harder and harder to focus It is a
little better where there are no windows such as a Crapo
classrooms but then there is a feeling of sitting in a prison
cell and being isolated from the weather outside In Olin
the large spans of glass between the outside and the class-
room can be too distracting or too eerie
The one place on campus where a nice balance
seems to have been struck is in the Logan Library
In the back corner of the first floor is the large
conference room and the size of the windows in
that room is just right Goldilocks herself would
approve of the middle ground these openings
strike
The first accolade for these windows is the appropri-
ate level of exposure I have heard the complaints that
those windows are more like archerrsquos slits in a castle wall
but I think this is too hasty of an assessment They do not
let in a lot of sunlight but that also means they keep in a
lot of focus on the meeting topics on hand Besides who
doesnrsquot want to feel like he is sitting inside the walls of a
castle
It is a lot easier to keep the mind from wandering
without the imagery of classmates frolicking in the Quad
during the spurts of nicer weather It is also a lot easier to
keep from feeling dreary during the spurts of gray weath-
er that come back to haunt us during the fickle springtime
in Indiana There is just enough isolation offered to allow
a view of the outdoors when sought and to prevent acci-
dentally daydreaming otherwise
An added benefit that comes from the narrow size of
these windows is the privacy Sometimes I just do not
want to look up and see someone staring into my class-
room at what is being done or by whom on his way past
In this meeting room I do
not have to worry about
that Those windows are so
narrow that only a truly
dedicated observer who is
willing to hoist himself
right up to the slit and peer
into it would be able to
watch me and my team-
mates at work I like to
think someone else on
campus would knock him
right off his step stool or
ladder and tell him to stop
being such a creepy person
Finally it provides me
with the opportunity to
observe passersby unno-
ticed Sure I do not want
anyone else peering into
the windows at me but I
do not see the harm in peo-
ple watching if no one is
upset by noticing From the
end of the table farthest from that delightfully propor-
tioned slit in the wall it is possible to cast an eye out onto
the sidewalk I can take note of what the latest clothing
styles are how much the wind is going to later perturb my
hairstyle and which individuals have the bad habit of
spitting onto the sidewalks The best part is that no one
else in the meeting will suspect my wandering attention
since it does not often occur to them that anything inter-
esting could be observed through such a small opening in
the wall
With all of these benefits to the ldquoarcherrsquos slitsrdquo
I can only conclude that they are the best of all
windows on our campus Not too big Not too non-
existent Just right rdquo

be the only one of the
game with Rose falling 1-0 In the

again and smacked 13 hits with the
help of three hits and three RBIs
from both Klima and second
baseman junior Caleb Kissel The
Engineers put up three runs in
the second inning one in the

The Lost Creek after the trees along the bank of the creek were removed pictured above The
removal of trees has caused confusion and upset among students unaware of the improvements

SWERY is one strange
Japanese man Developer of
the cult classic ldquoDeadly
Premonitionrdquo SWERY has
been picked up by Microsoft
Studios to release his latest
work ldquoD4 Dark Dreams
Donrsquot Dierdquo on Xbox One
The player takes control
of David Young a private
detective who was once a
cop He left the force after
the death of his wife a case
that he is still trying to solve
Suffering from amnesia of
the day of her death David
only remembers her last
words ldquoLook for Drdquo This
being the only hint David
must look for ldquoDrdquo and solve
who killed his wife In the
process he is proving that
he is not D (his name is Da-
vid after all)
ldquoD4rdquo takes elements
from classic adventure
games newer classics from
TellTale Games and a buck-
et full of Japanese craziness
to craft something entirely
unique The game was de-
signed for Kinect though I
opted for playing with the
controller Pointing is the
main gameplay mechanic I
can see how that would work
great with Kinect and by all
accounts the game seems to
be one of the better Kinect
experiences available on
Xbox One You explore the
environment looking for
clues and talk-
ing to suspects
There are a lot
of different in-
teractions with
characters and
dialogue trees
similar to Tell-
Tale rsquos ldquoThe
Walking Deadrdquo
But the key to
this game is how
SWERY has
translated the mechanics to
be distinctly Japanese For
example rather than just
talking to people you have
the option to push them
eliciting different types of
conversations
ldquoD4rdquo has an intriguing
story The world is odd
which played a part in hav-
ing me on the edge of my
seat the entire time Charac-
ters are incredibly original
and interesting They donrsquot
follow typical archetypes
that tend to be played out
For example one character
is a cat lady but not the kind
of cat lady you think she
literally thinks she is a cat
She wears a bow and has a
collar She even chases mice
and meows Incredibly weird
characters like this made
every interaction in the
game interesting and fun I
kept moving through the
plot and talking to everyone
just to see what they would
say or do next
The game takes place in
Boston but it is clear that
the designer of the game
SWERY has absolutely no
idea what Boston is actually
like or how people in Boston
actually talk They have long
conversations about Boston
foods such as clam chowder
It shows that SWERY knows
that they are known for it
but itrsquos so blunt and lasts so
long that it just comes off
that SWERY clearly has no
idea And why should he
He is a Japanese game de-
signer who visits the
United States a few
times a year at most
He may not have even
been to Boston All of
this sounds like I am
ragging on the game
but in reality all of the
oddities that SWERY
brings to the world
really makes the game
If this was a straight-
forward mystery game
set in Boston it would be
super boring Seeing how
SWERY tries to translate
what he knows about the
United States into a story
and misses the point so of-
ten is a highlight because it
is so hilarious You never get
mad about the misunder-
standings It just so appeal-
ing in an odd way that you
want to learn about the crazy
alternate Boston this mad-
man has crafted
My only real complaint
about ldquoD4rdquo is that the game
has a pointless energy sys-
tem You have to keep eating
or else David will pass out
from exhaustion But the
simplest things drain a ton
of energy Every time you
talk it takes off one percent
off the meter and something
as simple as moving a table
takes around 15 percent
This leads to tons of food
being available in the envi-
ronment even if it makes
absolutely no sense For ex-
ample part of the game
takes place on a plane I was
running low on energy and
found an entire hamburger
and fries dinner along with a
drink in the overhead bin
That is insane Though one
could say this adds to the
charm of the game I found
it to be more frustrating
ldquoD4rdquo is a solid game for
Xbox One Itrsquos definitely not
a typical experience and has
quite a few quirks but at its
core the game is just a fun
time and is totally worth
checking out

Like most PC users I love Steam
sales There is always the temptation
to grab a game for a ridiculous bar-
gain and sometimes itrsquos just too
good to pass up Such was the case
with the recent 2K anniversary sale
last weekend Included in that was
ldquoSid Meierrsquos Civilization Beyond
Earthrdquo and ldquoSid Meierrsquos Starshipsrdquo
ldquoBeyond Earthrdquo is the next in-
stallment in the extremely popular
and extraordinarily addictive Civili-
zation series which tasks players
with raising a civilization one city at
a time The big change with this new
game is that as the title suggests
you are not on
earth anymore
and are instead
colonizing an
a l ien wo rld
Gone are the fa-
mous historical
figures like Attila
the Hun Alexan-
der the Great
and the nuclear
warmonger Ma-
hatma Gandhi
The basis for this
colonization is
grounded in the
ldquoGreat Mistakerdquo
some kind of
global cataclysm
that made the
entire Earth un-
livable In the
chaos that fol-
lowed new pow-
ers began to
emerge some
fusions of exist-
ing countries we
know today
some radically
different Notable examples include
the American Reclamation Corpora-
tion a corporation that literally
bought America from the US gov-
ernment Polystralia consisting of
Australia and the pacific islands and
the Slavic Federation the USSR
reborn
The basics of the gameplay have-
nrsquot changed too drastically in the
jump to the far reaches of the uni-
verse but there are some notable
new features that may excite (or con-
fuse) veteran Civilization players
Most of the Civilization staples are
still present some with more tweaks
than others The barbarians have
been replaced with the native life
forms of the new world and the
technology tree is no longer linear
but rather a large nonlinear web for
researching new technology
The biggest addition is the Affin-
ity system Almost every action you
take in game from researching to
exploration adds to one of three Af-
finity levels Purity Harmony and
Supremacy Each of these can
change the game in new and exciting
ways
Purity stems from the age-old
belief that humanity is better than
any species it could come across in
this case that would be the native
ldquoalienrdquo(since you are technically the
alien on this world) life Purity soci-
eties attempt to stay as ldquoEarth-likerdquo
as possible using mech-suits and
domes to keep themselves isolated
from the new world
Supremacy strives to improve
humanity in any way possible most
often through advanced robotics and
cybernetics They replace everything
with sleek robotic designs and even-
tually rely on combat robots and un-
manned vehicles to fight their bat-
tles
A Harmony society accepts the
new surroundings and attempts to
coexist with the native life It strives
to be at one with the new ecosystem
even genetically modifies itself to
adapt to the ecosystem and eventu-
ally can create its own versions of the
native life
The game plays exactly like any
other Civilization game before it
although this game succeeds in cre-
ating an atmosphere of wonder and
overwhelming naiveteacute as you venture
out into the unknown Most of that
stems from the minimal tutorials
and the large scope of the lands It
takes much longer to explore this
new frontier the native lifeforms are
more numerous than barbarians ever
were and they can quickly over-
whelm you without much notice
The new tech trees are generally con-
fusing and itrsquos hard to understand
why interstellar travelers have to
research Physics again I am looking
forward to playing this game a lot
then seeing what crazy mods the
community will come up with

If you have gained the confidence to ask
your crush out congratulations for having
the courage to do so in the first place If they
said yes itrsquos time to start planning the big
first date Most of you have your ideal date
scenario in mind but just in case yoursquore a bit
lost I have several tips that can help you
Before you go out do some research on
what your crush is interested in Are they
into movies sports nature or other hob-
bies If you both have something in common
or some common activity the two of you want
to try go for it
Do not take that person to something that
you like and they will hate You want the
date to be enjoyable for the both
of you not just the one
The conversations held on a
date are one of the most im-
portant parts Make it the goal of
the date to get to know the other
person better If the conversation
focuses on you too much try to
shift it over to the other person
Listen closely when your crush
is talking and be ready to respond
with a follow-up question One
word responses are the gateway
to awkward pauses which should
be avoided
Always maintain confidence
Do not ask questions like ldquohow do
you think the date is goingrdquo or
ldquoare we a good matchrdquo These
questions make you appear insecure in your
date planning skills as well and can ruin the
date quickly Just remember that you asked
the person out and they said yes

Last week it felt like spring was starting
to come around This week however the
weather has been nothing but the ghost of
winters past Who knows when the weath-
er will start to stabilize Until then
here is a list of things to keep
you occupied during this tumul-
tuous purgatory between spring
and winter
The one task that is somewhat easier to
complete during this limbo season is
homework The only things that can dis-
tract you are inside activities When you
finish watching your favorite
show or playing a game you can
try to start homework When
spring comes around the temp-
tation to procrastinate will be
even stronger as you will have
distractions both inside and out
Try to take advantage of these
rainy brisk days to train yourself
to power through the homework
because the temptation to blow it
off during the warm months will
be twice as high
While the weather is still cold
take advantage of the main com-
modities of fall and winter
sweaters and warm drinks This
is the last time to experience this
sweater weather so to speak As
soon as spring rolls around the
sweaters go away
Additionally your craving for
warm beverages midday general-
ly will subside when those 80-
degree days roll around Start
thinking of a cold midday caf-
feinated drink substitute for
spring and summer months be-
cause the weather could change
in the blink of an eye
Another thing to take care of
during spring is your car Now is
a great time if you havenrsquot al-
ready to get your car washed and
clean it out for those spring
drives Before you take a day trip
to Indianapolis or another big
city be sure to get your tires
filled with air Though itrsquos a
chore your wallet will thank you
when you save on gas
I for one am very impatient and
cannot wait for spring to get started
However though the weather is
still gloomy there are plenty of
things to enjoy and do during
this unusual time

Ah pasta a food that most of
us have become experts of in col-
lege A particular favorite is
macaroni and cheese For the
limited amount of time we get
for cooking here are two recipes
for quick and on-the-go mac and
cheese
These recipes can get you out
of the kitchen quickly and back
to doing what you need to do to
survive Rose-Hulman
If you need to grab food on the
go these mac and cheese muf-
fins go where you go
2 cups cooked warm elbow mac-
aroni pasta
1 tablespoon butter
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
1 frac12 cups shredded sharp ched-
dar cheese
1 frac12 cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
frac12 cup seasoned dry bread
crumbs
2 teaspoons olive oil
frac12 teaspoons olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 de-
grees Grease a muffin pan and
mix together the bread crumbs
olive oil and salt in a bowl
In another bowl stir in the
butter and egg until the pasta is
evenly coated Stir in one cup of
cheddar cheese Add the milk
mozzarella and cheese into the
pasta and transfer the mixture to
the muffin tin Top the
muffins with the cheddar
cheese and breadcrumb
mixture
Bake the muffins for
30 minutes in the oven or
until the toppings are
nicely browned Once
done allow the muffins to
cool in the pan before re-
moving them
By allowing them to
cool in the pan the
cheese has time set and
the muffins will hold
their shape
If you do not have the time
to make muffin-sized pasta
and are lacking those instant
macaroni cups this quick
macaroni recipe will get you
fed and back to work
13 cup pasta
frac12 cup water
frac14 1 milk
frac12 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Add the pasta and water in a large
mug or bowl Microwave the pasta
and water for two minutes and
stir several times
Place the cup or bowl in the
microwave for another two to
four minutes stirring at each
two-minute interval The pasta
should cook through but if it
doesnrsquot add another teaspoon of
water and microwave for another
minute
Remove the mixture from the
microwave and stir in the milk
and cheese Microwave for an-
other minute and stir The pasta
is ready to eat

As residents of the Apartments
East Residence Hall my roommates
and I enjoy the relaxation of cooking
our own dinner most nights Because
of this our kitchen is a very im-
portant part of our experience here
at Rose and so far it has served its
purpose reasonably well
There are minor issues like the
stove hood not actually venting any-
where except back in your face but
the stove hasnrsquot broken the oven
hasnrsquot broken the fridge has broken
and the sink hasnrsquot broken yet With
that said taking a closer look at each
part of the kitchen reveals more
The kitchen island is a fairly
standard layout with a sink in
the middle and bar seating on
the opposite side
This is where your main
counter space is probably going
to end up if yoursquore anything like
my roommates and have a micro-
wave a coffee maker or any oth-
er appliance normally kept on
the counter
To this end the island countertop
space is big enough to fit the largest cut-
ting boards I have ever seen which makes
it really plenty reasonable especially if you
move the bar chairs to use that space as
well This also leaves an equivalently sized
countertop area on the other end of the
island by the wall which is less accessible
but includes an outlet
Really the most serious problem
with the island is that there isnrsquot an outlet
on the non-wall side of the island making
using appliances an issue sometimes
On the other side of the kitchen
we have the main counter with the
fridge and oven stovetop combo On
this side of the kitchen we find a lot
more outlets for plugging in things
like your microwave or toaster oven
The stove itself is just as good as any
other electric stove though the dial
placement does leave something to
be desired when yoursquore making pasta
and trying to turn off the burner us-
ing the dial directly behind the pot
The oven on the other hand
definitely leaves you wanting The
ovens in the Apartments do not in-
clude either an internal light or a
viewing window both of which are
features on my old homersquos 40-year-
old oven
Quite frankly I donrsquot understand
those design choices since in order
to check on whateverrsquos baking I have
to open the oven get out my cell-
phone turn on my cellphone light
and then look at my food This is
wasteful of both heat and effort
when in any other oven you could
just press a button to turn on the
light and glance through the window
Above all of
this we have
the cabinets
and stove
hood As
p r e v i o u s l y
m e n t i o n e d
the stove
hood doesnrsquot
actually do anything to help be-
sides blow greasy air in your face
if you actually turn it on It does
however come with a sometimes
useful light
The cabinets are fairly stand-
ard affairs and donrsquot have any
particular problems
The kitchen layout as a whole
is fairly reasonable with lack of
built in storage space being the
only problem That is easily
solved by purchasing your own
shelving unit though
There is space for three or
four people to stand in the kitch-
en without undue bumping of
elbows and therersquos plenty of
room for your old bottles to sit
up on top of the cabinets
Overall the kitchen is a fair-
ly good kitchen with no particu-
larly serious issues even if the
oven design makes no sense
A rare occurrence of our kitchen being clean

I do not mind sitting indoors while trying to get some
work done but the spring weather that has been coming
back lately has made it harder and harder to focus It is a
little better where there are no windows such as a Crapo
classrooms but then there is a feeling of sitting in a prison
cell and being isolated from the weather outside In Olin
the large spans of glass between the outside and the class-
room can be too distracting or too eerie
The one place on campus where a nice balance
seems to have been struck is in the Logan Library
In the back corner of the first floor is the large
conference room and the size of the windows in
that room is just right Goldilocks herself would
approve of the middle ground these openings
strike
The first accolade for these windows is the appropri-
ate level of exposure I have heard the complaints that
those windows are more like archerrsquos slits in a castle wall
but I think this is too hasty of an assessment They do not
let in a lot of sunlight but that also means they keep in a
lot of focus on the meeting topics on hand Besides who
doesnrsquot want to feel like he is sitting inside the walls of a
castle
It is a lot easier to keep the mind from wandering
without the imagery of classmates frolicking in the Quad
during the spurts of nicer weather It is also a lot easier to
keep from feeling dreary during the spurts of gray weath-
er that come back to haunt us during the fickle springtime
in Indiana There is just enough isolation offered to allow
a view of the outdoors when sought and to prevent acci-
dentally daydreaming otherwise
An added benefit that comes from the narrow size of
these windows is the privacy Sometimes I just do not
want to look up and see someone staring into my class-
room at what is being done or by whom on his way past
In this meeting room I do
not have to worry about
that Those windows are so
narrow that only a truly
dedicated observer who is
willing to hoist himself
right up to the slit and peer
into it would be able to
watch me and my team-
mates at work I like to
think someone else on
campus would knock him
right off his step stool or
ladder and tell him to stop
being such a creepy person
Finally it provides me
with the opportunity to
observe passersby unno-
ticed Sure I do not want
anyone else peering into
the windows at me but I
do not see the harm in peo-
ple watching if no one is
upset by noticing From the
end of the table farthest from that delightfully propor-
tioned slit in the wall it is possible to cast an eye out onto
the sidewalk I can take note of what the latest clothing
styles are how much the wind is going to later perturb my
hairstyle and which individuals have the bad habit of
spitting onto the sidewalks The best part is that no one
else in the meeting will suspect my wandering attention
since it does not often occur to them that anything inter-
esting could be observed through such a small opening in
the wall
With all of these benefits to the ldquoarcherrsquos slitsrdquo
I can only conclude that they are the best of all
windows on our campus Not too big Not too non-
existent Just right rdquo

pitched a complete shutout
on Saturday as the Engi-
neers topped Defiance 4-0

Singaporersquos First Premier Lee Kuan Dies at 91
Lee Kuan Yew the first prime minister and important political figurehead of Singapore since the countryrsquos inde-pendence in 1965 died Monday at the age of 91
ldquoMr Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore Gen-eral Hospitalrdquo the announcement from the Prime Ministerrsquos Office said ldquoArrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral proceedings will be announced laterrdquo
Mr Lee led Singaporersquos transition from British colonial rule to democracy in 1965 after first joining Malaysia in 1963
As the leader of the Peoplersquos Action Party which was responsible for guiding the transition he won election as the first prime minister of the fledgling democracy Mr Lee remained prime minister for 25 years before handing over leadership in 1990 after which he moved into the advisory role of senior minister
Mr Leersquos style of government was often criticized for its authoritarian characteristics including suppressing free-dom of speech and limiting public assembly but was also a rare example of pragmatic and incorrupt government in the region
Singapore has since become an economic powerhouse and a vital center for international finance and business Mr Lee often described Singapore as a ldquoFirst World oasis in a Third World regionrdquo
Germanwings Co-Pilot Responsible for Plane
Crash in France
A Germanwings co-pilot deliberately crashed his plane into the French Alps Tuesday according to French officials The plane was en route to Duumlsseldorf Germany from Barce-lona Spain was carrying 150 people who all died in the crash
Investigators initially thought that the crash was an ac-cident before recovering the planersquos voice recorders The cockpitrsquos voice recorders captured the last minutes of the flight during which the captain could be heard pleading for the co-pilot to open the door
Andreas Lubitz the co-pilot identified by French inves-tigators reportedly locked the captain out of the cockpit before taking control of the plane Mr Lubitz was initially talkative but became ldquolaconicrdquo in the words of French in-vestigators during the middle of the flight
In the final moments before the crash the captainrsquos pleas to return to the cockpit became more frantic and shouting could be heard coming from the passenger section The voice recorder revealed normal breathing in the cock-pit indicating that Mr Lubitz was aware of his actions
The investigation is likely now to turn from the crash itself to focus on Mr Lubitz and his mental state before the crash A similar incident happened in 1999 when an EgyptAir flight crashed in the Atlantic Ocean after it was determined that the co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane
Situation in Yemen Worsens as Saudi Arabia
Starts Air Strikes
Saudi Arabia and a coalition of other nations started military operations in Yemen Wednesday to halt the ad-vance of Houthi rebels who have taken control of large swaths of the country
Saudi Arabia joins nine other countries in launching air and ground operations in the country The operations are largely seen to secure the long border the nation shares with Yemen Reports from previous weeks said that Saudi Arabia had been amassing troops along the border
The situation in Yemen has continued to deteriorate after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels pushed into the south-ern half of the country forcing President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee the capitol The presidentrsquos wherea-bouts are still unknown
Yemen is also in the midst of dealing with an active campaign by an offshoot of al Qaeda called al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula The region has become the focus of American counterterrorism operations including drone

Students have expressed concern and confusion over work that began this week on improvements being made to Lost Creek the stream that runs along the Student Recreation Center (SRC)
The Indiana Department of Trans-portation (INDOT) are making the im-provements as part of the local IN641 by
-pass project focusing on mitigating the effects of the by-pass on the local water-shed Particular changes include reno-vating the embankments stream path and the flow of the stream with particu-lar attention paid to reducing erosion
Jacob Campbell Director of Envi-ronmental Health and Safety informed students faculty and staff of the project and the disruption to campus as INDOT works on the improvements This was the first time that students were notified of the changes that were to be made to campus
What students were not informed of are the substantial changes being made to the campus Work began by cutting down many of the trees that line the stream including trees between the Apartment Residence Halls and the SRC parking lot Trees along the stream be-hind Cook Stadium have also been marked for removal
Concerned students have questioned why the project has required so many trees to be removed for making improve-ments to the stream
ldquoWhen I first saw all the tree stumps I was a little shockedrdquo freshman Jane Sahabu a member of the Home for Envi-ronmentally Responsible Engineers (HERE) program said ldquoIt seemed to me counterintuitive to remove trees that help stop soil erosionrdquo
Students were also upset at the cost
of chopping down trees that are a part of the scenery on campus
ldquoI am not excited about the changes being made to campusrdquo freshman me-chanical engineer Dan Engstrom said ldquoI think wersquore going to lose a lot of the beauty of the campus and future stu-dents are going to lose out as a result of itrdquo
Although some students were con-fused as to why the improvements were being made civil engineering students are acutely aware of the case for making the improvements ldquoAlthough I hate to see them cut down the trees the im-provements are necessary to improve the water quality of the watershedrdquo jun-ior civil engineer Isaac Gehman ldquoThe project is really about meeting state re-quirements for maintaining the water-shed and improvements to Lost Creek should do sordquo
Students with more knowledge on the subject have suggested that the costs are outweighed by the benefits Another civil engineering student junior Gene Kum corroborated Mr Gehman rsquos state-ment adding that the ldquobanks have been unstable and the trees are nonnative and a pestrdquo Mr Kum also said that ldquotheyrsquore doing it for a reasonhellip it might actually help the creekrdquo
The main issue for those upset is the lack of information available to students about the work being done With a weekrsquos notice and a short email about the closing of the road behind the Hul-man Memorial Student Union students were caught off guard when they saw
entire rows of trees being cut down Students are eager for answers about how this program is going to affect the campus whether or not administrators will respond is the question that needs to be answered

removal of trees has caused confusion and upset among students unaware of the improvements

SWERY is one strange
Japanese man Developer of
the cult classic ldquoDeadly
Premonitionrdquo SWERY has
been picked up by Microsoft
Studios to release his latest
work ldquoD4 Dark Dreams
Donrsquot Dierdquo on Xbox One
The player takes control
of David Young a private
detective who was once a
cop He left the force after
the death of his wife a case
that he is still trying to solve
Suffering from amnesia of
the day of her death David
only remembers her last
words ldquoLook for Drdquo This
being the only hint David
must look for ldquoDrdquo and solve
who killed his wife In the
process he is proving that
he is not D (his name is Da-
vid after all)
ldquoD4rdquo takes elements
from classic adventure
games newer classics from
TellTale Games and a buck-
et full of Japanese craziness
to craft something entirely
unique The game was de-
signed for Kinect though I
opted for playing with the
controller Pointing is the
main gameplay mechanic I
can see how that would work
great with Kinect and by all
accounts the game seems to
be one of the better Kinect
experiences available on
Xbox One You explore the
environment looking for
clues and talk-
ing to suspects
There are a lot
of different in-
teractions with
characters and
dialogue trees
similar to Tell-
Tale rsquos ldquoThe
Walking Deadrdquo
But the key to
this game is how
SWERY has
translated the mechanics to
be distinctly Japanese For
example rather than just
talking to people you have
the option to push them
eliciting different types of
conversations
ldquoD4rdquo has an intriguing
story The world is odd
which played a part in hav-
ing me on the edge of my
seat the entire time Charac-
ters are incredibly original
and interesting They donrsquot
follow typical archetypes
that tend to be played out
For example one character
is a cat lady but not the kind
of cat lady you think she
literally thinks she is a cat
She wears a bow and has a
collar She even chases mice
and meows Incredibly weird
characters like this made
every interaction in the
game interesting and fun I
kept moving through the
plot and talking to everyone
just to see what they would
say or do next
The game takes place in
Boston but it is clear that
the designer of the game
SWERY has absolutely no
idea what Boston is actually
like or how people in Boston
actually talk They have long
conversations about Boston
foods such as clam chowder
It shows that SWERY knows
that they are known for it
but itrsquos so blunt and lasts so
long that it just comes off
that SWERY clearly has no
idea And why should he
He is a Japanese game de-
signer who visits the
United States a few
times a year at most
He may not have even
been to Boston All of
this sounds like I am
ragging on the game
but in reality all of the
oddities that SWERY
brings to the world
really makes the game
If this was a straight-
forward mystery game
set in Boston it would be
super boring Seeing how
SWERY tries to translate
what he knows about the
United States into a story
and misses the point so of-
ten is a highlight because it
is so hilarious You never get
mad about the misunder-
standings It just so appeal-
ing in an odd way that you
want to learn about the crazy
alternate Boston this mad-
man has crafted
My only real complaint
about ldquoD4rdquo is that the game
has a pointless energy sys-
tem You have to keep eating
or else David will pass out
from exhaustion But the
simplest things drain a ton
of energy Every time you
talk it takes off one percent
off the meter and something
as simple as moving a table
takes around 15 percent
This leads to tons of food
being available in the envi-
ronment even if it makes
absolutely no sense For ex-
ample part of the game
takes place on a plane I was
running low on energy and
found an entire hamburger
and fries dinner along with a
drink in the overhead bin
That is insane Though one
could say this adds to the
charm of the game I found
it to be more frustrating
ldquoD4rdquo is a solid game for
Xbox One Itrsquos definitely not
a typical experience and has
quite a few quirks but at its
core the game is just a fun
time and is totally worth
checking out

Like most PC users I love Steam
sales There is always the temptation
to grab a game for a ridiculous bar-
gain and sometimes itrsquos just too
good to pass up Such was the case
with the recent 2K anniversary sale
last weekend Included in that was
ldquoSid Meierrsquos Civilization Beyond
Earthrdquo and ldquoSid Meierrsquos Starshipsrdquo
ldquoBeyond Earthrdquo is the next in-
stallment in the extremely popular
and extraordinarily addictive Civili-
zation series which tasks players
with raising a civilization one city at
a time The big change with this new
game is that as the title suggests
you are not on
earth anymore
and are instead
colonizing an
a l ien wo rld
Gone are the fa-
mous historical
figures like Attila
the Hun Alexan-
der the Great
and the nuclear
warmonger Ma-
hatma Gandhi
The basis for this
colonization is
grounded in the
ldquoGreat Mistakerdquo
some kind of
global cataclysm
that made the
entire Earth un-
livable In the
chaos that fol-
lowed new pow-
ers began to
emerge some
fusions of exist-
ing countries we
know today
some radically
different Notable examples include
the American Reclamation Corpora-
tion a corporation that literally
bought America from the US gov-
ernment Polystralia consisting of
Australia and the pacific islands and
the Slavic Federation the USSR
reborn
The basics of the gameplay have-
nrsquot changed too drastically in the
jump to the far reaches of the uni-
verse but there are some notable
new features that may excite (or con-
fuse) veteran Civilization players
Most of the Civilization staples are
still present some with more tweaks
than others The barbarians have
been replaced with the native life
forms of the new world and the
technology tree is no longer linear
but rather a large nonlinear web for
researching new technology
The biggest addition is the Affin-
ity system Almost every action you
take in game from researching to
exploration adds to one of three Af-
finity levels Purity Harmony and
Supremacy Each of these can
change the game in new and exciting
ways
Purity stems from the age-old
belief that humanity is better than
any species it could come across in
this case that would be the native
ldquoalienrdquo(since you are technically the
alien on this world) life Purity soci-
eties attempt to stay as ldquoEarth-likerdquo
as possible using mech-suits and
domes to keep themselves isolated
from the new world
Supremacy strives to improve
humanity in any way possible most
often through advanced robotics and
cybernetics They replace everything
with sleek robotic designs and even-
tually rely on combat robots and un-
manned vehicles to fight their bat-
tles
A Harmony society accepts the
new surroundings and attempts to
coexist with the native life It strives
to be at one with the new ecosystem
even genetically modifies itself to
adapt to the ecosystem and eventu-
ally can create its own versions of the
native life
The game plays exactly like any
other Civilization game before it
although this game succeeds in cre-
ating an atmosphere of wonder and
overwhelming naiveteacute as you venture
out into the unknown Most of that
stems from the minimal tutorials
and the large scope of the lands It
takes much longer to explore this
new frontier the native lifeforms are
more numerous than barbarians ever
were and they can quickly over-
whelm you without much notice
The new tech trees are generally con-
fusing and itrsquos hard to understand
why interstellar travelers have to
research Physics again I am looking
forward to playing this game a lot
then seeing what crazy mods the
community will come up with

If you have gained the confidence to ask
your crush out congratulations for having
the courage to do so in the first place If they
said yes itrsquos time to start planning the big
first date Most of you have your ideal date
scenario in mind but just in case yoursquore a bit
lost I have several tips that can help you
Before you go out do some research on
what your crush is interested in Are they
into movies sports nature or other hob-
bies If you both have something in common
or some common activity the two of you want
to try go for it
Do not take that person to something that
you like and they will hate You want the
date to be enjoyable for the both
of you not just the one
The conversations held on a
date are one of the most im-
portant parts Make it the goal of
the date to get to know the other
person better If the conversation
focuses on you too much try to
shift it over to the other person
Listen closely when your crush
is talking and be ready to respond
with a follow-up question One
word responses are the gateway
to awkward pauses which should
be avoided
Always maintain confidence
Do not ask questions like ldquohow do
you think the date is goingrdquo or
ldquoare we a good matchrdquo These
questions make you appear insecure in your
date planning skills as well and can ruin the
date quickly Just remember that you asked
the person out and they said yes

Last week it felt like spring was starting
to come around This week however the
weather has been nothing but the ghost of
winters past Who knows when the weath-
er will start to stabilize Until then
here is a list of things to keep
you occupied during this tumul-
tuous purgatory between spring
and winter
The one task that is somewhat easier to
complete during this limbo season is
homework The only things that can dis-
tract you are inside activities When you
finish watching your favorite
show or playing a game you can
try to start homework When
spring comes around the temp-
tation to procrastinate will be
even stronger as you will have
distractions both inside and out
Try to take advantage of these
rainy brisk days to train yourself
to power through the homework
because the temptation to blow it
off during the warm months will
be twice as high
While the weather is still cold
take advantage of the main com-
modities of fall and winter
sweaters and warm drinks This
is the last time to experience this
sweater weather so to speak As
soon as spring rolls around the
sweaters go away
Additionally your craving for
warm beverages midday general-
ly will subside when those 80-
degree days roll around Start
thinking of a cold midday caf-
feinated drink substitute for
spring and summer months be-
cause the weather could change
in the blink of an eye
Another thing to take care of
during spring is your car Now is
a great time if you havenrsquot al-
ready to get your car washed and
clean it out for those spring
drives Before you take a day trip
to Indianapolis or another big
city be sure to get your tires
filled with air Though itrsquos a
chore your wallet will thank you
when you save on gas
I for one am very impatient and
cannot wait for spring to get started
However though the weather is
still gloomy there are plenty of
things to enjoy and do during
this unusual time

Ah pasta a food that most of
us have become experts of in col-
lege A particular favorite is
macaroni and cheese For the
limited amount of time we get
for cooking here are two recipes
for quick and on-the-go mac and
cheese
These recipes can get you out
of the kitchen quickly and back
to doing what you need to do to
survive Rose-Hulman
If you need to grab food on the
go these mac and cheese muf-
fins go where you go
2 cups cooked warm elbow mac-
aroni pasta
1 tablespoon butter
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
1 frac12 cups shredded sharp ched-
dar cheese
1 frac12 cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
frac12 cup seasoned dry bread
crumbs
2 teaspoons olive oil
frac12 teaspoons olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 de-
grees Grease a muffin pan and
mix together the bread crumbs
olive oil and salt in a bowl
In another bowl stir in the
butter and egg until the pasta is
evenly coated Stir in one cup of
cheddar cheese Add the milk
mozzarella and cheese into the
pasta and transfer the mixture to
the muffin tin Top the
muffins with the cheddar
cheese and breadcrumb
mixture
Bake the muffins for
30 minutes in the oven or
until the toppings are
nicely browned Once
done allow the muffins to
cool in the pan before re-
moving them
By allowing them to
cool in the pan the
cheese has time set and
the muffins will hold
their shape
If you do not have the time
to make muffin-sized pasta
and are lacking those instant
macaroni cups this quick
macaroni recipe will get you
fed and back to work
13 cup pasta
frac12 cup water
frac14 1 milk
frac12 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Add the pasta and water in a large
mug or bowl Microwave the pasta
and water for two minutes and
stir several times
Place the cup or bowl in the
microwave for another two to
four minutes stirring at each
two-minute interval The pasta
should cook through but if it
doesnrsquot add another teaspoon of
water and microwave for another
minute
Remove the mixture from the
microwave and stir in the milk
and cheese Microwave for an-
other minute and stir The pasta
is ready to eat

As residents of the Apartments
East Residence Hall my roommates
and I enjoy the relaxation of cooking
our own dinner most nights Because
of this our kitchen is a very im-
portant part of our experience here
at Rose and so far it has served its
purpose reasonably well
There are minor issues like the
stove hood not actually venting any-
where except back in your face but
the stove hasnrsquot broken the oven
hasnrsquot broken the fridge has broken
and the sink hasnrsquot broken yet With
that said taking a closer look at each
part of the kitchen reveals more
The kitchen island is a fairly
standard layout with a sink in
the middle and bar seating on
the opposite side
This is where your main
counter space is probably going
to end up if yoursquore anything like
my roommates and have a micro-
wave a coffee maker or any oth-
er appliance normally kept on
the counter
To this end the island countertop
space is big enough to fit the largest cut-
ting boards I have ever seen which makes
it really plenty reasonable especially if you
move the bar chairs to use that space as
well This also leaves an equivalently sized
countertop area on the other end of the
island by the wall which is less accessible
but includes an outlet
Really the most serious problem
with the island is that there isnrsquot an outlet
on the non-wall side of the island making
using appliances an issue sometimes
On the other side of the kitchen
we have the main counter with the
fridge and oven stovetop combo On
this side of the kitchen we find a lot
more outlets for plugging in things
like your microwave or toaster oven
The stove itself is just as good as any
other electric stove though the dial
placement does leave something to
be desired when yoursquore making pasta
and trying to turn off the burner us-
ing the dial directly behind the pot
The oven on the other hand
definitely leaves you wanting The
ovens in the Apartments do not in-
clude either an internal light or a
viewing window both of which are
features on my old homersquos 40-year-
old oven
Quite frankly I donrsquot understand
those design choices since in order
to check on whateverrsquos baking I have
to open the oven get out my cell-
phone turn on my cellphone light
and then look at my food This is
wasteful of both heat and effort
when in any other oven you could
just press a button to turn on the
light and glance through the window
Above all of
this we have
the cabinets
and stove
hood As
p r e v i o u s l y
m e n t i o n e d
the stove
hood doesnrsquot
actually do anything to help be-
sides blow greasy air in your face
if you actually turn it on It does
however come with a sometimes
useful light
The cabinets are fairly stand-
ard affairs and donrsquot have any
particular problems
The kitchen layout as a whole
is fairly reasonable with lack of
built in storage space being the
only problem That is easily
solved by purchasing your own
shelving unit though
There is space for three or
four people to stand in the kitch-
en without undue bumping of
elbows and therersquos plenty of
room for your old bottles to sit
up on top of the cabinets
Overall the kitchen is a fair-
ly good kitchen with no particu-
larly serious issues even if the
oven design makes no sense
A rare occurrence of our kitchen being clean

I do not mind sitting indoors while trying to get some
work done but the spring weather that has been coming
back lately has made it harder and harder to focus It is a
little better where there are no windows such as a Crapo
classrooms but then there is a feeling of sitting in a prison
cell and being isolated from the weather outside In Olin
the large spans of glass between the outside and the class-
room can be too distracting or too eerie
The one place on campus where a nice balance
seems to have been struck is in the Logan Library
In the back corner of the first floor is the large
conference room and the size of the windows in
that room is just right Goldilocks herself would
approve of the middle ground these openings
strike
The first accolade for these windows is the appropri-
ate level of exposure I have heard the complaints that
those windows are more like archerrsquos slits in a castle wall
but I think this is too hasty of an assessment They do not
let in a lot of sunlight but that also means they keep in a
lot of focus on the meeting topics on hand Besides who
doesnrsquot want to feel like he is sitting inside the walls of a
castle
It is a lot easier to keep the mind from wandering
without the imagery of classmates frolicking in the Quad
during the spurts of nicer weather It is also a lot easier to
keep from feeling dreary during the spurts of gray weath-
er that come back to haunt us during the fickle springtime
in Indiana There is just enough isolation offered to allow
a view of the outdoors when sought and to prevent acci-
dentally daydreaming otherwise
An added benefit that comes from the narrow size of
these windows is the privacy Sometimes I just do not
want to look up and see someone staring into my class-
room at what is being done or by whom on his way past
In this meeting room I do
not have to worry about
that Those windows are so
narrow that only a truly
dedicated observer who is
willing to hoist himself
right up to the slit and peer
into it would be able to
watch me and my team-
mates at work I like to
think someone else on
campus would knock him
right off his step stool or
ladder and tell him to stop
being such a creepy person
Finally it provides me
with the opportunity to
observe passersby unno-
ticed Sure I do not want
anyone else peering into
the windows at me but I
do not see the harm in peo-
ple watching if no one is
upset by noticing From the
end of the table farthest from that delightfully propor-
tioned slit in the wall it is possible to cast an eye out onto
the sidewalk I can take note of what the latest clothing
styles are how much the wind is going to later perturb my
hairstyle and which individuals have the bad habit of
spitting onto the sidewalks The best part is that no one
else in the meeting will suspect my wandering attention
since it does not often occur to them that anything inter-
esting could be observed through such a small opening in
the wall
With all of these benefits to the ldquoarcherrsquos slitsrdquo
I can only conclude that they are the best of all
windows on our campus Not too big Not too non-
existent Just right rdquo

In the second game Rose didnrsquot hesitate to
get the bats swinging and scored six runs in
the first inning RBIs from Miller Heibel Lake
(2) Bender and Markison put Rose up 6-0

SWERY is one strange
Japanese man Developer of
the cult classic ldquoDeadly
Premonitionrdquo SWERY has
been picked up by Microsoft
Studios to release his latest
work ldquoD4 Dark Dreams
Donrsquot Dierdquo on Xbox One
The player takes control
of David Young a private
detective who was once a
cop He left the force after
the death of his wife a case
that he is still trying to solve
Suffering from amnesia of
the day of her death David
only remembers her last
words ldquoLook for Drdquo This
being the only hint David
must look for ldquoDrdquo and solve
who killed his wife In the
process he is proving that
he is not D (his name is Da-
vid after all)
ldquoD4rdquo takes elements
from classic adventure
games newer classics from
TellTale Games and a buck-
et full of Japanese craziness
to craft something entirely
unique The game was de-
signed for Kinect though I
opted for playing with the
controller Pointing is the
main gameplay mechanic I
can see how that would work
great with Kinect and by all
accounts the game seems to
be one of the better Kinect
experiences available on
Xbox One You explore the
environment looking for
clues and talk-
ing to suspects
There are a lot
of different in-
teractions with
characters and
dialogue trees
similar to Tell-
Tale rsquos ldquoThe
Walking Deadrdquo
But the key to
this game is how
SWERY has
translated the mechanics to
be distinctly Japanese For
example rather than just
talking to people you have
the option to push them
eliciting different types of
conversations
ldquoD4rdquo has an intriguing
story The world is odd
which played a part in hav-
ing me on the edge of my
seat the entire time Charac-
ters are incredibly original
and interesting They donrsquot
follow typical archetypes
that tend to be played out
For example one character
is a cat lady but not the kind
of cat lady you think she
literally thinks she is a cat
She wears a bow and has a
collar She even chases mice
and meows Incredibly weird
characters like this made
every interaction in the
game interesting and fun I
kept moving through the
plot and talking to everyone
just to see what they would
say or do next
The game takes place in
Boston but it is clear that
the designer of the game
SWERY has absolutely no
idea what Boston is actually
like or how people in Boston
actually talk They have long
conversations about Boston
foods such as clam chowder
It shows that SWERY knows
that they are known for it
but itrsquos so blunt and lasts so
long that it just comes off
that SWERY clearly has no
idea And why should he
He is a Japanese game de-
signer who visits the
United States a few
times a year at most
He may not have even
been to Boston All of
this sounds like I am
ragging on the game
but in reality all of the
oddities that SWERY
brings to the world
really makes the game
If this was a straight-
forward mystery game
set in Boston it would be
super boring Seeing how
SWERY tries to translate
what he knows about the
United States into a story
and misses the point so of-
ten is a highlight because it
is so hilarious You never get
mad about the misunder-
standings It just so appeal-
ing in an odd way that you
want to learn about the crazy
alternate Boston this mad-
man has crafted
My only real complaint
about ldquoD4rdquo is that the game
has a pointless energy sys-
tem You have to keep eating
or else David will pass out
from exhaustion But the
simplest things drain a ton
of energy Every time you
talk it takes off one percent
off the meter and something
as simple as moving a table
takes around 15 percent
This leads to tons of food
being available in the envi-
ronment even if it makes
absolutely no sense For ex-
ample part of the game
takes place on a plane I was
running low on energy and
found an entire hamburger
and fries dinner along with a
drink in the overhead bin
That is insane Though one
could say this adds to the
charm of the game I found
it to be more frustrating
ldquoD4rdquo is a solid game for
Xbox One Itrsquos definitely not
a typical experience and has
quite a few quirks but at its
core the game is just a fun
time and is totally worth
checking out

Like most PC users I love Steam
sales There is always the temptation
to grab a game for a ridiculous bar-
gain and sometimes itrsquos just too
good to pass up Such was the case
with the recent 2K anniversary sale
last weekend Included in that was
ldquoSid Meierrsquos Civilization Beyond
Earthrdquo and ldquoSid Meierrsquos Starshipsrdquo
ldquoBeyond Earthrdquo is the next in-
stallment in the extremely popular
and extraordinarily addictive Civili-
zation series which tasks players
with raising a civilization one city at
a time The big change with this new
game is that as the title suggests
you are not on
earth anymore
and are instead
colonizing an
a l ien wo rld
Gone are the fa-
mous historical
figures like Attila
the Hun Alexan-
der the Great
and the nuclear
warmonger Ma-
hatma Gandhi
The basis for this
colonization is
grounded in the
ldquoGreat Mistakerdquo
some kind of
global cataclysm
that made the
entire Earth un-
livable In the
chaos that fol-
lowed new pow-
ers began to
emerge some
fusions of exist-
ing countries we
know today
some radically
different Notable examples include
the American Reclamation Corpora-
tion a corporation that literally
bought America from the US gov-
ernment Polystralia consisting of
Australia and the pacific islands and
the Slavic Federation the USSR
reborn
The basics of the gameplay have-
nrsquot changed too drastically in the
jump to the far reaches of the uni-
verse but there are some notable
new features that may excite (or con-
fuse) veteran Civilization players
Most of the Civilization staples are
still present some with more tweaks
than others The barbarians have
been replaced with the native life
forms of the new world and the
technology tree is no longer linear
but rather a large nonlinear web for
researching new technology
The biggest addition is the Affin-
ity system Almost every action you
take in game from researching to
exploration adds to one of three Af-
finity levels Purity Harmony and
Supremacy Each of these can
change the game in new and exciting
ways
Purity stems from the age-old
belief that humanity is better than
any species it could come across in
this case that would be the native
ldquoalienrdquo(since you are technically the
alien on this world) life Purity soci-
eties attempt to stay as ldquoEarth-likerdquo
as possible using mech-suits and
domes to keep themselves isolated
from the new world
Supremacy strives to improve
humanity in any way possible most
often through advanced robotics and
cybernetics They replace everything
with sleek robotic designs and even-
tually rely on combat robots and un-
manned vehicles to fight their bat-
tles
A Harmony society accepts the
new surroundings and attempts to
coexist with the native life It strives
to be at one with the new ecosystem
even genetically modifies itself to
adapt to the ecosystem and eventu-
ally can create its own versions of the
native life
The game plays exactly like any
other Civilization game before it
although this game succeeds in cre-
ating an atmosphere of wonder and
overwhelming naiveteacute as you venture
out into the unknown Most of that
stems from the minimal tutorials
and the large scope of the lands It
takes much longer to explore this
new frontier the native lifeforms are
more numerous than barbarians ever
were and they can quickly over-
whelm you without much notice
The new tech trees are generally con-
fusing and itrsquos hard to understand
why interstellar travelers have to
research Physics again I am looking
forward to playing this game a lot
then seeing what crazy mods the
community will come up with

If you have gained the confidence to ask
your crush out congratulations for having
the courage to do so in the first place If they
said yes itrsquos time to start planning the big
first date Most of you have your ideal date
scenario in mind but just in case yoursquore a bit
lost I have several tips that can help you
Before you go out do some research on
what your crush is interested in Are they
into movies sports nature or other hob-
bies If you both have something in common
or some common activity the two of you want
to try go for it
Do not take that person to something that
you like and they will hate You want the
date to be enjoyable for the both
of you not just the one
The conversations held on a
date are one of the most im-
portant parts Make it the goal of
the date to get to know the other
person better If the conversation
focuses on you too much try to
shift it over to the other person
Listen closely when your crush
is talking and be ready to respond
with a follow-up question One
word responses are the gateway
to awkward pauses which should
be avoided
Always maintain confidence
Do not ask questions like ldquohow do
you think the date is goingrdquo or
ldquoare we a good matchrdquo These
questions make you appear insecure in your
date planning skills as well and can ruin the
date quickly Just remember that you asked
the person out and they said yes

Last week it felt like spring was starting
to come around This week however the
weather has been nothing but the ghost of
winters past Who knows when the weath-
er will start to stabilize Until then
here is a list of things to keep
you occupied during this tumul-
tuous purgatory between spring
and winter
The one task that is somewhat easier to
complete during this limbo season is
homework The only things that can dis-
tract you are inside activities When you
finish watching your favorite
show or playing a game you can
try to start homework When
spring comes around the temp-
tation to procrastinate will be
even stronger as you will have
distractions both inside and out
Try to take advantage of these
rainy brisk days to train yourself
to power through the homework
because the temptation to blow it
off during the warm months will
be twice as high
While the weather is still cold
take advantage of the main com-
modities of fall and winter
sweaters and warm drinks This
is the last time to experience this
sweater weather so to speak As
soon as spring rolls around the
sweaters go away
Additionally your craving for
warm beverages midday general-
ly will subside when those 80-
degree days roll around Start
thinking of a cold midday caf-
feinated drink substitute for
spring and summer months be-
cause the weather could change
in the blink of an eye
Another thing to take care of
during spring is your car Now is
a great time if you havenrsquot al-
ready to get your car washed and
clean it out for those spring
drives Before you take a day trip
to Indianapolis or another big
city be sure to get your tires
filled with air Though itrsquos a
chore your wallet will thank you
when you save on gas
I for one am very impatient and
cannot wait for spring to get started
However though the weather is
still gloomy there are plenty of
things to enjoy and do during
this unusual time

Ah pasta a food that most of
us have become experts of in col-
lege A particular favorite is
macaroni and cheese For the
limited amount of time we get
for cooking here are two recipes
for quick and on-the-go mac and
cheese
These recipes can get you out
of the kitchen quickly and back
to doing what you need to do to
survive Rose-Hulman
If you need to grab food on the
go these mac and cheese muf-
fins go where you go
2 cups cooked warm elbow mac-
aroni pasta
1 tablespoon butter
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
1 frac12 cups shredded sharp ched-
dar cheese
1 frac12 cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
frac12 cup seasoned dry bread
crumbs
2 teaspoons olive oil
frac12 teaspoons olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 de-
grees Grease a muffin pan and
mix together the bread crumbs
olive oil and salt in a bowl
In another bowl stir in the
butter and egg until the pasta is
evenly coated Stir in one cup of
cheddar cheese Add the milk
mozzarella and cheese into the
pasta and transfer the mixture to
the muffin tin Top the
muffins with the cheddar
cheese and breadcrumb
mixture
Bake the muffins for
30 minutes in the oven or
until the toppings are
nicely browned Once
done allow the muffins to
cool in the pan before re-
moving them
By allowing them to
cool in the pan the
cheese has time set and
the muffins will hold
their shape
If you do not have the time
to make muffin-sized pasta
and are lacking those instant
macaroni cups this quick
macaroni recipe will get you
fed and back to work
13 cup pasta
frac12 cup water
frac14 1 milk
frac12 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Add the pasta and water in a large
mug or bowl Microwave the pasta
and water for two minutes and
stir several times
Place the cup or bowl in the
microwave for another two to
four minutes stirring at each
two-minute interval The pasta
should cook through but if it
doesnrsquot add another teaspoon of
water and microwave for another
minute
Remove the mixture from the
microwave and stir in the milk
and cheese Microwave for an-
other minute and stir The pasta
is ready to eat

As residents of the Apartments
East Residence Hall my roommates
and I enjoy the relaxation of cooking
our own dinner most nights Because
of this our kitchen is a very im-
portant part of our experience here
at Rose and so far it has served its
purpose reasonably well
There are minor issues like the
stove hood not actually venting any-
where except back in your face but
the stove hasnrsquot broken the oven
hasnrsquot broken the fridge has broken
and the sink hasnrsquot broken yet With
that said taking a closer look at each
part of the kitchen reveals more
The kitchen island is a fairly
standard layout with a sink in
the middle and bar seating on
the opposite side
This is where your main
counter space is probably going
to end up if yoursquore anything like
my roommates and have a micro-
wave a coffee maker or any oth-
er appliance normally kept on
the counter
To this end the island countertop
space is big enough to fit the largest cut-
ting boards I have ever seen which makes
it really plenty reasonable especially if you
move the bar chairs to use that space as
well This also leaves an equivalently sized
countertop area on the other end of the
island by the wall which is less accessible
but includes an outlet
Really the most serious problem
with the island is that there isnrsquot an outlet
on the non-wall side of the island making
using appliances an issue sometimes
On the other side of the kitchen
we have the main counter with the
fridge and oven stovetop combo On
this side of the kitchen we find a lot
more outlets for plugging in things
like your microwave or toaster oven
The stove itself is just as good as any
other electric stove though the dial
placement does leave something to
be desired when yoursquore making pasta
and trying to turn off the burner us-
ing the dial directly behind the pot
The oven on the other hand
definitely leaves you wanting The
ovens in the Apartments do not in-
clude either an internal light or a
viewing window both of which are
features on my old homersquos 40-year-
old oven
Quite frankly I donrsquot understand
those design choices since in order
to check on whateverrsquos baking I have
to open the oven get out my cell-
phone turn on my cellphone light
and then look at my food This is
wasteful of both heat and effort
when in any other oven you could
just press a button to turn on the
light and glance through the window
Above all of
this we have
the cabinets
and stove
hood As
p r e v i o u s l y
m e n t i o n e d
the stove
hood doesnrsquot
actually do anything to help be-
sides blow greasy air in your face
if you actually turn it on It does
however come with a sometimes
useful light
The cabinets are fairly stand-
ard affairs and donrsquot have any
particular problems
The kitchen layout as a whole
is fairly reasonable with lack of
built in storage space being the
only problem That is easily
solved by purchasing your own
shelving unit though
There is space for three or
four people to stand in the kitch-
en without undue bumping of
elbows and therersquos plenty of
room for your old bottles to sit
up on top of the cabinets
Overall the kitchen is a fair-
ly good kitchen with no particu-
larly serious issues even if the
oven design makes no sense
A rare occurrence of our kitchen being clean

I do not mind sitting indoors while trying to get some
work done but the spring weather that has been coming
back lately has made it harder and harder to focus It is a
little better where there are no windows such as a Crapo
classrooms but then there is a feeling of sitting in a prison
cell and being isolated from the weather outside In Olin
the large spans of glass between the outside and the class-
room can be too distracting or too eerie
The one place on campus where a nice balance
seems to have been struck is in the Logan Library
In the back corner of the first floor is the large
conference room and the size of the windows in
that room is just right Goldilocks herself would
approve of the middle ground these openings
strike
The first accolade for these windows is the appropri-
ate level of exposure I have heard the complaints that
those windows are more like archerrsquos slits in a castle wall
but I think this is too hasty of an assessment They do not
let in a lot of sunlight but that also means they keep in a
lot of focus on the meeting topics on hand Besides who
doesnrsquot want to feel like he is sitting inside the walls of a
castle
It is a lot easier to keep the mind from wandering
without the imagery of classmates frolicking in the Quad
during the spurts of nicer weather It is also a lot easier to
keep from feeling dreary during the spurts of gray weath-
er that come back to haunt us during the fickle springtime
in Indiana There is just enough isolation offered to allow
a view of the outdoors when sought and to prevent acci-
dentally daydreaming otherwise
An added benefit that comes from the narrow size of
these windows is the privacy Sometimes I just do not
want to look up and see someone staring into my class-
room at what is being done or by whom on his way past
In this meeting room I do
not have to worry about
that Those windows are so
narrow that only a truly
dedicated observer who is
willing to hoist himself
right up to the slit and peer
into it would be able to
watch me and my team-
mates at work I like to
think someone else on
campus would knock him
right off his step stool or
ladder and tell him to stop
being such a creepy person
Finally it provides me
with the opportunity to
observe passersby unno-
ticed Sure I do not want
anyone else peering into
the windows at me but I
do not see the harm in peo-
ple watching if no one is
upset by noticing From the
end of the table farthest from that delightfully propor-
tioned slit in the wall it is possible to cast an eye out onto
the sidewalk I can take note of what the latest clothing
styles are how much the wind is going to later perturb my
hairstyle and which individuals have the bad habit of
spitting onto the sidewalks The best part is that no one
else in the meeting will suspect my wandering attention
since it does not often occur to them that anything inter-
esting could be observed through such a small opening in
the wall
With all of these benefits to the ldquoarcherrsquos slitsrdquo
I can only conclude that they are the best of all
windows on our campus Not too big Not too non-
existent Just right rdquo

Donesersquos run would
be the only one of the
game with Rose falling 1-0 In the
second game Rose found their bats
again and smacked 13 hits with the
help of three hits and three RBIs
from both Klima and second
baseman junior Caleb Kissel The
Engineers put up three runs in
the second inning one in the

In the second game Rose didnrsquot hesitate to
get the bats swinging and scored six runs in
the first inning RBIs from Miller Heibel Lake
(2) Bender and Markison put Rose up 6-0
after one inning of play The score would re-

off his nomination for Conference Player of
the Week won first singles 6-0 6-3 and then

If you have gained the confidence to ask
your crush out congratulations for having
the courage to do so in the first place If they
said yes itrsquos time to start planning the big
first date Most of you have your ideal date
scenario in mind but just in case yoursquore a bit
lost I have several tips that can help you
Before you go out do some research on
what your crush is interested in Are they
into movies sports nature or other hob-
bies If you both have something in common
or some common activity the two of you want
to try go for it
Do not take that person to something that
you like and they will hate You want the
date to be enjoyable for the both
of you not just the one
The conversations held on a
date are one of the most im-
portant parts Make it the goal of
the date to get to know the other
person better If the conversation
focuses on you too much try to
shift it over to the other person
Listen closely when your crush
is talking and be ready to respond
with a follow-up question One
word responses are the gateway
to awkward pauses which should
be avoided
Always maintain confidence
Do not ask questions like ldquohow do
you think the date is goingrdquo or
ldquoare we a good matchrdquo These
questions make you appear insecure in your
date planning skills as well and can ruin the
date quickly Just remember that you asked
the person out and they said yes

Last week it felt like spring was starting
to come around This week however the
weather has been nothing but the ghost of
winters past Who knows when the weath-
er will start to stabilize Until then
here is a list of things to keep
you occupied during this tumul-
tuous purgatory between spring
and winter
The one task that is somewhat easier to
complete during this limbo season is
homework The only things that can dis-
tract you are inside activities When you
finish watching your favorite
show or playing a game you can
try to start homework When
spring comes around the temp-
tation to procrastinate will be
even stronger as you will have
distractions both inside and out
Try to take advantage of these
rainy brisk days to train yourself
to power through the homework
because the temptation to blow it
off during the warm months will
be twice as high
While the weather is still cold
take advantage of the main com-
modities of fall and winter
sweaters and warm drinks This
is the last time to experience this
sweater weather so to speak As
soon as spring rolls around the
sweaters go away
Additionally your craving for
warm beverages midday general-
ly will subside when those 80-
degree days roll around Start
thinking of a cold midday caf-
feinated drink substitute for
spring and summer months be-
cause the weather could change
in the blink of an eye
Another thing to take care of
during spring is your car Now is
a great time if you havenrsquot al-
ready to get your car washed and
clean it out for those spring
drives Before you take a day trip
to Indianapolis or another big
city be sure to get your tires
filled with air Though itrsquos a
chore your wallet will thank you
when you save on gas
I for one am very impatient and
cannot wait for spring to get started
However though the weather is
still gloomy there are plenty of
things to enjoy and do during
this unusual time

Ah pasta a food that most of
us have become experts of in col-
lege A particular favorite is
macaroni and cheese For the
limited amount of time we get
for cooking here are two recipes
for quick and on-the-go mac and
cheese
These recipes can get you out
of the kitchen quickly and back
to doing what you need to do to
survive Rose-Hulman
If you need to grab food on the
go these mac and cheese muf-
fins go where you go
2 cups cooked warm elbow mac-
aroni pasta
1 tablespoon butter
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
1 frac12 cups shredded sharp ched-
dar cheese
1 frac12 cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
frac12 cup seasoned dry bread
crumbs
2 teaspoons olive oil
frac12 teaspoons olive oil
Preheat the oven to 350 de-
grees Grease a muffin pan and
mix together the bread crumbs
olive oil and salt in a bowl
In another bowl stir in the
butter and egg until the pasta is
evenly coated Stir in one cup of
cheddar cheese Add the milk
mozzarella and cheese into the
pasta and transfer the mixture to
the muffin tin Top the
muffins with the cheddar
cheese and breadcrumb
mixture
Bake the muffins for
30 minutes in the oven or
until the toppings are
nicely browned Once
done allow the muffins to
cool in the pan before re-
moving them
By allowing them to
cool in the pan the
cheese has time set and
the muffins will hold
their shape
If you do not have the time
to make muffin-sized pasta
and are lacking those instant
macaroni cups this quick
macaroni recipe will get you
fed and back to work
13 cup pasta
frac12 cup water
frac14 1 milk
frac12 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Add the pasta and water in a large
mug or bowl Microwave the pasta
and water for two minutes and
stir several times
Place the cup or bowl in the
microwave for another two to
four minutes stirring at each
two-minute interval The pasta
should cook through but if it
doesnrsquot add another teaspoon of
water and microwave for another
minute
Remove the mixture from the
microwave and stir in the milk
and cheese Microwave for an-
other minute and stir The pasta
is ready to eat
A first date can go well if you keep your cool forwallpapercom

I can only conclude that they are the best of all
windows on our campus Not too big Not too non-
existent Just right rdquo

took two of the three-game
series against Defiance
College in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Confer-
ence (HCAC) opener Jun-
ior pitcher Andrew Stull
pitched a complete shutout
on Saturday as the Engi-
neers topped Defiance 4-0
behind a third-inning tri-
ple by junior Patrick Klima
and a single from junior

game was largely
uneventful and saw
no runs scored un-
til Defiancersquos Chris
Donese scored on a
wild pitch in the top
of the eighth
Donesersquos run would
be the only one of the
game with Rose falling 1-0 In the
second game Rose found their bats
again and smacked 13 hits with the
help of three hits and three RBIs
from both Klima and second
baseman junior Caleb Kissel The
Engineers put up three runs in
the second inning one in the

Rose softball has had an excellent season so far
and entered this weekend at a 7-3 record On Satur-
day Rose swept the Milwaukee School of Engineer-
ing (MSOE) in two excellent displays of offense re-
cording at least seven runs in both victories and shut-
ting out MSOE both times

hits and no runs For the first five innings no team
scored but then freshman Gabbi Markison took
charge and smacked home two RBIs Freshman Jes-

Bender all notched hits as well
In the second game Rose didnrsquot hesitate to
get the bats swinging and scored six runs in
the first inning RBIs from Miller Heibel Lake
(2) Bender and Markison put Rose up 6-0
after one inning of play The score would re-
main unchanged until the bottom of
the third which saw Heibel hit her
15th career home run and drive

hairstyle and which individuals have the bad habit of
spitting onto the sidewalks The best part is that no one
else in the meeting will suspect my wandering attention
since it does not often occur to them that anything inter-
esting could be observed through such a small opening in
the wall
With all of these benefits to the ldquoarcherrsquos slitsrdquo
I can only conclude that they are the best of all
windows on our campus Not too big Not too non-
existent Just right rdquo
