Project Update The Green Line to the Airport project team continues progress with the technical analysis for the Draft Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Impact Study (EIR/EIS). These studies will continue through 2016 and 2017. Beginning next week on Monday, August 15, the project team will be conducting noise and vibration testing at 25 locations along the proposed route for about one week. These measurements will be used to compare existing noise and vibration conditions along the corridor against levels during construction and operation of the new light rail line. The noise and vibration testing will occur at various locations along the proposed route and near the proposed maintenance facility on Academy Way. The equipment will be installed at each location for no more than 24 hours collecting important noise and vibration data. The equipment will not impact traffic or public access along the corridor. You may see monitoring equipment near trees, fences, and utility structures or may receive a knock on the door notifying you of upcoming testing near your property. The testing equipment will be labeled with a Green Line Project tag and contact information if you have any questions.

What’s Next? Over the next few months, the project team will:

Continue to meet with state and federal agencies regarding sensitive biological resources, the American River crossing, flood hazards, and cultural resources

Prepare ridership forecasts, including estimates of the passengers that may be riding the Green Line to exciting new venues along the corridor such as the Golden 1 Center, the Major League Soccer Stadium, and the Kaiser regional medical facility

Develop visual simulations to illustrate how the future Green Line will look

More Information For more information about the Green Line to the Airport project, visit the project website at www.greenline2airport.com.

Exhibitions, Events, and Programs at the Crocker Art Museum

C O N T I N U I N G E X H I B I T I O N S “Little Dreams in Glass and Metal: Enameling in America, 1920 to the Present” June 19 through September 11, 2016 Enameling — the art of fusing glass to metal through a high-temperature firing process — gained widespread popularity in the United States in the last half of the 20th century. In the first decades of the 21st, artists throughout the country continue to explore enamel in a variety of forms, finding new meaning and rich expressive potential in the vibrant color and layered depth of this time-honored medium. Organized by the Los Angeles-based Enamel Arts Foundation, “Little Dreams in Glass and Metal” includes 121 works by 90 artists from the foundation’s collection of modern and contemporary enamels. Objects range from jewelry to large enamel-on-steel wall panels. Documented in a fully illustrated publication distributed by the University of North Carolina Press, this is the first nationally traveling exhibition to survey this dynamic field in more than 50 years. “Ourselves Through the Lens: Photography from the Ramer Collection” June 19 through October 23, 2016 By training the camera on individual personalities and circumstances, photographers from James Van Der Zee to Graciela Iturbide and Luis Gonzàlez Palma have sought to capture the emotional lives of others. This exhibition examines our very human impulse to look, and the ways photography directs such visual encounters. Sometimes documentary, sometimes metaphorical, the 44 images selected for this exhibition include gifts to the Crocker’s permanent collection. Among the many photographic approaches documented in this exhibition are prints by Arnold Genthe, Leonard Freed, Edward Steichen, Flor Garduño, Raúl Cañibano, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Shelby Lee Adams, Sebastião Selgado and Jennifer Karady. All are provocative and questioning of whether truth or artifice lies behind the portrayal. “Glass for the New Millennium: Masterworks from the Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection” July 10 through October 2, 2016 Inspired by its unique ability to absorb, transmit and reflect light, artists are using glass as a medium to express concept and content as never before. “Glass for the New Millennium: Masterworks from the Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection,” showcases and celebrates the international artists reimagining the expressive potential of glass. The exhibition examines the medium’s emergence from the 20th-century studio movement into the 21st-century mainstream, showcasing 80 objects and more than 70 of the most dynamic artists in the field today. Among these are the field’s premier visionaries Richard Marquis, Dale Chihuly, Klaus Moje, the late Marvin Lipofsky and others who transformed glass into a vehicle for ideas.

“The Luster of Ages: Ancient Glass from the Marcy Friedman Collection” July 17 through October 16, 2016 Created from fire and sand, glass is one of the earliest man-made substances on earth. “The Luster of Ages: Ancient Glass from the Marcy Friedman Collection” explores the beauty of ageless glass from the 6th century BCE to the 8th century CE. The collection’s 50 pieces, which include brightly colored miniature amphorae and lustrous perfume bottles, reflect the forms and influences of Greek, Roman and Phoenician cultures in the Holy Land.

S T U D E N T & C O M M U N I T Y E X H I B I T I O N S “Expression of Ink and Water” June 9 through September 4, 2016 This exhibition will showcase Chinese brush painting from the students at the Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center. Since 1978, the Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center has served immigrants, refugees, and other underserved individuals in the greater Sacramento area by providing educational, vocational, and health programs. Taught by teaching artist Lillian Seto, the community art class of different ages and skill levels learns the discipline and technique of the “xieyi” painting style. “2016 High School Clean Air Contest” June 9 through September 4, 2016 Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails, in partnership with the Crocker Art Museum, Verge Center for the Arts, and the Sacramento Air Quality Management District presents artwork from its 9th Annual High School Clean Air Contest. Dedicated to healthy air and preventing lung and other air-pollution related diseases, Breathe California partners with youth, advocates for public policy, supports research, and educates the public on clean air. This contest is coordinated with Breathe California’s annual Clean Air Awards Luncheon. “Still We Rise: Women’s Wisdom Art’s 25th Anniversary” September 9 through December 4, 2016 Women’s Wisdom Art, since 1991, has provided a support system and nurturing environment to empower women through artistic exploration. Women, in all stages of life, work closely with talented volunteers and professional artists to create healing works of art in diverse media, including paintings, ceramics, and jewelry. This exhibition is comprised of a selection of group and individually created works of art. Reception: Thursday, October 6, 7 – 9 p.m.

C O N C E R T S , F I L M S , & S P E C I A L E V E N T S Film Series: Adult Summer CAMP! Thursday, September 1, 7 p.m. “Flash Gordon” (1980, 111 minutes, PG) This summer, we cool off in the Setzer Foundation Auditorium and celebrate the art of camp, with campy films that are exuberant, playful, dramatized, and hilarious (though not always intentionally). Each presentation will begin with an introduction by local film lover and historian Jacob Greenberg and a campy short film showcasing some of the best (and weirdest) of underground cinema. The featured film for September is “Flash Gordon.” Earth is under attack, and foot-ball star Flash Gordon may be our only hope! Based on a comic book of the same name, “Flash Gordon” features an original soundtrack by Queen, and lots of colorful, campy fun. $6 Museum members, $10 student/youth, $12 nonmembers. Tickets may be purchased at crockerartmuseum.org or at the Museum admission desk.
