Colon cancer can begin as a small polyp, detectable through regular cancer screening. Colon cancer symptoms include a change in bowel habits or bleeding, but often there are no symptoms.

Mended Hearts members, from left, Alice Conkey and Pam Flanner, offered a variety of educational resources and reading materials about preventing and coping with heart disease at the Sunbonnet Sue Quilters Guild, Inc. “Quilts From the Heart” quilting bee on Valentine’s Day weekend. The bee drew more than 2,000 attendees to the Indian River County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the show went to the local Mended Hearts Chapter #235. statewide—or 1.7 million steps. Florida is ranked 37 out of 51 states impacted by obesity; and 26 percent of Floridians are affected by obesity.

Helping meet that goal were Elizabeth Clark, 8, and AnnaKate, 6, pictured here, who walked just under 5 miles last Sunday. They are the daughters of Lewis Clark Jr., vice president, Marketing, Corporate Communications and Digital Media.

On Feb. 22, Treasure Coast Bariatric at IRMC joined the Florida State Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the ASMBS Foundation to take a virtual walk across Florida to raise awareness of obesity and related diseases.

Of 6.2 million steps walked statewide, more than 460,000 were walked in Vero Beach. Vickie Boles, RN, BSN, Bariatric Program specialist, gave away more than 250 pedometers to employees and bariatric support group members so they could join the “The 2/22 Pedometer Challenge” virtual walk.

Tracie Thornton, RN, Emergency Department, walked 37,562 steps—more than anyone else from Vero Beach. Food and Nutrition Services headed up the departments with the most steps walked. Congratulations!

A total of 2,900 miles was walked statewide. The goal was to walk 820 miles
