President’s Message Oh, the Places You’ll Go? The title of this popular Dr. Seuss book is often used as the theme for graduation speeches. “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!” Since hearing this theme when I was in college, it has been a source of reflection and optimism. As we congratulate recent graduates Kelli Murphy, Macy McNeely, Nash Giesemann, and Victoria Gaughan, we can ponder what places their post graduation journeys will take them.

Look at the place’s life took Januarius Aloysius MacGahan. MacGahan was born June 12, 1844, near New Lexington, Ohio. His father was from Coun-ty Derry. When he graduated, he became a teacher and eventually a news-paper reporter. In 1868, he traveled to Europe to continue his studies. Dear Shamrock Club Members and friends,

‘Tis the wonderful month of May! Our long and frigid

winter is over, flowers and blossoms are everywhere,

people are getting their covid vaccinations, and a more

hopeful atmosphere is evident in our world today.

May begins end-of-the school-year activities: gradua-

tions, weddings, ordinations and warm weather activi-

ties! What a relief!

This May also begins Shamrock Club summer activities. Watch the web-

site for more information. With the recent CDC guidelines permitting us to

be free of masks in outdoor activities, we can begin to anticipate the even-

tual turning point in the pandemic. What a time this has been!

The month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, wife of Joseph and

mother of our Lord Jesus. Many people not of the catholic faith misunder-

other adventures from all over the world. Perhaps his most significant achievement was in 1876 when he reported on the atrocities being committed by the Turks against the Bulgarian people, during their April nationalist uprising (sound familiar). His reports caused the Russians to intervene on behalf of the Bulgar-ian people and turned the British from supporting the Turks. MacGahan died two years later, short of his 34th birthday, but he is remembered as one of the liberators of Bulgaria. He is buried in New Lexington, and Bulgaria has honored him with streets named for him and public statues. He is still remembered in New Lexington where, on June 5, the city will resume their annual festival in his honor. Oh, what places lie ahead? Logan Kinzel (Dempsey) recently celebrated four years of being cancer free. Logan is already quite a character, so where will his imagination take him? Michael McConahay (the younger, more handsome one, and son of Christina) is returning from a long tour at sea during his service with the US Navy. How many other members like Michael experienced the world while serving our coun-try in both war and peace? We will remember one of them, Bob Black, during our Flag Day ceremony on June 14. There are many stories among our members of the places they have been, and many more to be written as the world is opening back up. Next time you are in the pub, take some time to talk to someone new. Find out some of the places they have been. You might even find out that both our Vice-President Karen Komatsu and Morey Brady used to ride motorcycles. The book is now closed on some of our friends and their stories are written. I won’t try to retell Jim O’Connor’s story. He wouldn’t want the recognition either. His obituary said it best, teacher, coach, fa-ther, loving husband, and loyal friend. So, I’ll simply say “oh, the places he went”, and the things that he did. It was a life well lived. Film at 11:00, as he used to say. “So... be your name Murphy or Giesemann, or McNeely or Gaughan, You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So...get on your way!” Andy

stand the Church’s devotion to her. Some mis-

takenly believe that we worship Mary: nothing

could be farther from the truth. We give honor to

Mary for a number of reasons: because she was

the person chosen by God to be the mother of the

Messiah, she was the first Christian because she

was the first to say “yes” to Jesus, and she was

given to us by the crucified Jesus as our spiritual

mother. Because Mary was important to Joseph

and Jesus as well as the Apostles, disciples and

the early Church, she is important to us. We ask

Mary to intercede for us before the throne of God

so that we can obtain the graces we need to be-

come better disciples and followers of Jesus. As

our spiritual mother, she is concerned with our

growth as disciples of her Son, Jesus.

Traditional prayers such as the Rosary, the

Memorare, the Hail Mary and the traditional

Crowning of the Blessed Virgin’s image in May

are expressions of our love and devotion to her.

Our love for Mary in no way diminishes our love

and worship of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We can easily relate to Mary because she was a

real human being who understands our struggles

and difficulties because she faced them in her life

on earth.

May this glorious time of year lift our spirits and

strengthen our hope for better days to come! Cer-

tainly, Mary who faced challenges in her own day,

is sympathetic to us in our challenges each day.

May Mary, mother of Jesus, help all of us to ap-

preciate the new life that Christ has given us in

our baptism and our membership in His body, the

Church.

God bless always,

Msgr. John K. Cody, Chaplain

Celebration of Life

The Irish Community Bereavement Committee would like to invite all of you to celebrate our loved ones

that we have lost since March 15, 2020.

Saturday, August 28, 2021 Shamrock Club of Columbus

We are planning a Mass for 4:00

The Bereavement Committee will provide the main dishes as we always do, however since this is going to

be a big one, we are asking if you could please bring food to share with hundreds of your friends. Bring an-

ything you like and how much you want we take anything.

Bring chairs, tables whatever you need to make your area on the grounds comfortable.

We have a few things planned and will have more details in the future, but we wanted to make sure you had

the date.

Please make some collages, pictures in frames, anything you want to celebrate their life with all of us.

We have all suffered so much in the past year and have not truly been able to grieve our loss so come do

that with your Irish friends.

Everyone is invited because that’s what we do, support each other in our time of need.

If you have a name of someone that has passed please email it to me so that they can be recognized properly:

[email protected]. If you have any questions you can text me at 614-316-8278

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Mary Grady Strickland

Treasurer’s Report

We have finally reached the end of our fiscal year and although it is not what we normally are used to seeing

at least we are still showing a positive result for the year. As the financials have not been finalized for the

end of May, I am not able to give you a better picture as to the exact numbers.

With the health restrictions being lifted in June we should be able to get back to normal operations for the

rest of this year. A lot has been planned in the coming months to help us get back to normal.

Stay healthy, get vaccinated, enter the vaxamillion sweepstakes, and who knows, we may have a new mil-

lionaire in our midst by the end of June.

Respectfully submitted,

David Stearns, Treasurer

Club News

The Business Office:

Will be closed from Friday June 4th through Monday June 14th as Irene will be on Vacation. Emails

and Voicemail will be answered. Other Club/Pub activitiers are not effected by this.

Club Wi-Fi:

A new Mesh Wi-Fi System has been installed in the Club. Check with the bartenders or look for the new

guest password posted in the Pub Area. Coverage and connections have been vastly improved with wi-fi

coverage on the patio area as well. Coverage will be seamless as you move about the Club or the patio

area.

Health Mandates - UPDATE Last June, patience was a virtue, as we asked for everyone’s cooperation with new rules and restrictions. As health mandates are lifted, we ask that you show patience as we transition again. Masks and restrict-ed seating will no longer be required. If you have not been vaccinated, you may need to continue to wear a mask, social distance or take other measures to protect yourself. Members with other health con-cerns may also chose to take protective measures as well. There is no right or wrong answer. However, let us all respect each other’s choices and support one another. We can all still do the little things like washing your hands, cover your mouths when you cough or sneeze, and staying home if you aren’t feel-ing well. We want the Club to be some where everyone is comfortable to come and share Irish culture. Thank you to everyone for your patience over the last fifteen months, as things return to a sort of nor-mal, remember that the “best is still come.” Did You Know? Since 2010, the C-Note Club has generated $94,000 to support our Club. In return for a C-Note ($100), donors received tickets to our summer events. Donors could use these tickets to bring guests to the events, or they could resell them. This benefited both the donor and the Club as they recouped their do-nation, and the Club still made their money on the ticket. It also introduced new people to our events. Now is the time to consider a C-Note donation for 2021. We still have the Corn Roast and Halfway Day coming up, so why not pay forward and introduce some new people to the Club at the same time. While $100 may not seem like much, if everyone does a little, no one will have to do a lot.
