Dedication

Whether we wish to admit it or not, we are the future of our ancestors, as our

descendants are our future. We owe our descendants our dreams and bequeath to them the

legacy of our collective accomplishments – nothing more and nothing less. To our

descendants, we charge you with the honoring of your heritage. Your ancestors were hardy

folk, god-fearing and plain spoken, and who recognized that nothing was due them except

that which they themselves earned. They were not ashamed to profess their belief in God,

their country and the American ideal. Of course, there were a few rapscallions in our

collective history, but neither more nor less than in any other family.

We too easily forget what it took to forge a life in a new world, one rife with peril and

with little at hand but a steadfast determination to not only survive but to thrive. Our

ancestors bequeathed us with their genes, aspirations and talents. It is therefore fitting that

the Blandford Series of Yarbrough Family Records be dedicated to them for making it

possible for us to be who we are.

To paraphrase Robert Kincaid1, “The dreams they had were good ones. They didn’t

all come true, but they were worth having, all the same.”

Acknowledgement

The Yarbrough Association is greatly indebted to the vision and efforts of Cathy Y.

Walker and William A. (Bill) Yarbrough, the late president and vice-president of the

YNGHA, respectively, for beginning the project to digitize the 150+ volumes of records

accumulated over the life of the Association. Fulfilment of the project was through the

efforts of a number of officers and members, including Bill’s son Mark, Rachel and Don

Yarbrough, Hal Yarbrough, Jan and Jim Yarbrough, Ann and Al Bush, Elaine and Lyle

Wolf, Joan Y. Singlaub, and Joanne and Bill Augspurger.

It was my privilege to be a part of this dedicated team.

Preface

These records are the legacy of our Yarbrough family researchers, to whom much is owed. The

known family researchers include Jean Baker, Ann Y. Broadbent, Mary Y. Daniel, Frances (Rea)

Donohue, Betty Humrighouse, Pauline Gray, Evelyn Goble, Nelle Morris Jenkins, Ophelia Kessler,

Frances Lockwood, Karen Mazock Renee Smelley, Dorothy Svec, Jeanette Wilson, Cleveland “Cy”

Yarborough, Edna Yarbrough, George A. Yarbrough, and Robert Price Yarbrough.

The originals of these volumes are being kept for the benefit of future generations by the

Williamson County Library, Franklin, Tennessee.

No claims of accuracy or authentication of the material herein are made or may be assumed.

Many of these records have been superseded by subsequent research. Hence, there are records

which are erroneous and unreliable; it would have been a Herculean task to attempt to correct all

of them. Fortunately, there are only a few critical genealogical facts that are involved, and which

are correctly stated here:

Richard (the Immigrant) Yarborough was never married to Frances Proctor;

Ambrose Yarbrough did not immigrant from Yorkshire; he is now believed to be a

descendant of Richard the Immigrant;

There are so far only two proven sons of Old Richard – John and Richard II;

There is so far no evidence proving Joshua Yarborough I to be a descendant of Old

Richard.

The “Old Country” referred to in old documents and letters is the Colony of Virginia,

not England or the Old World.

There were not seven brothers who immigrated from “the old country”; in fact, it now

appears there were three brothers and four sons of the brothers. Which were the

fathers and which were the sons are so far unknown.

In spite of these inaccuracies, these records comprise much of our history and some of our

accomplishments. There are pages whose print quality is so poor that word recognition was not

possible. In spite of that, at least partial capability for searching these volumes is provided, as well

as an index to each volume. Nonetheless, the viewer is cautioned to perform his/her own due

diligence in connection with any use of this material.

The various spellings of the Yarbrough surname have never been applied consistently, even

within a given family. To the extent possible, the names in the index reflect the names used on the

source pages; where it wasn’t clear as to which might be the proper spelling, the spelling used is

“Yarbrough”.

The material contained herein is subject to the copyright laws of the United States. Material may

be freely used by Yarbrough family researchers so long as proper attribution to the Yarbrough

National Genealogical & Historical Association, Inc. is given. This material, in whole or in part,

may not be used for any other purposes without the express written permission of the Yarbrough

National Genealogical & Historical Association.

We welcome the submission of any Yarbrough family information that can be added to our

growing data base. More information about the extended Yarbrough families can be found at our

website, http://www.yarbroughfamiy.org. If you are a Yarbrough or a member of one of our allied

families, we invite you to join our family association.

Between 1750 and 1780 there was a wave of migration tow2..rd the Carolina. 1'1any reasons :for this have been sighted by other genealogists, such as, the land no longer produced the tobacco crops or other crops as abundantly as in the pc,st. History shows there was an epidemic o:f smallpox whicl1 wiped out some i'amilies. Fear o:f this urged the people to seek the virgin soil and unpopulated areas o:f that pa~ .. t o:f North Carolina which the E,ederal Government opened, Indiru1 lands, to the white settlers. North Carolina did not becomE~ a state until 1789.

Just who and how many o:f the Yarboroughs le.:ft Virginia for the Carolinas is not certain, put the story of ot' one sueh group was told to Yarbrough kin o:f Le'xington, N. c. in 1898. The story was retold by George Yarborough, who was a descendant of Mancha and Littleton Yarbro~gh; .

the story was printed in the Lexington, N. c. Dispatch, January 5, 189C3. As the story related to men who came to North Carolina more than one hundred years before the article was :printed, we must view it as legend. The article states: "Between the years of 1729 and 1775( seven brothers of Yarbroughs went (from .Amelia Co. , Va. ; over to Louisburg, Fr~lklin Co., North·Carolina. Their names were Zachariah, Al."chi bald, Iv:Ia.'Yl.oha, Alexander, Thomas, Henry and John. 11

While some of the above named do appear on the State Census 17E4-1779, Dept. of .Archives, Raleigh, N. c., it is doubtful that the Yarboroughs mentioned in the article were sons of the same Father. Perhaps, 11 brothers of Yarbroughs" meant they left brothers in Amelia Co. or elsewhere, but came as a group of Yarbrough kin.

In a reeord such as this, it would be 5..mpossible to trace each .. man of the generation mentioned in th~ above article. By the 1790 Census, most of the Yarbrough -Yarborough. famllies were gone to another locality. There are many records to be found in North Carolina which per-tain to th.ose Yarboroughs mentioned in the following Censuses.

LOWE

The Court Houee of Ora.ngebu:regh Countv, South Carolina, was burned during the Civil War which makes genealogieal resea~eh almost 1mpossible unless the reeords needed are or such nature that thev would have been denos1 ted in the South Carolina Archives or in' the National Arehiv-es in Washington, D. C.

The only reeorde found that tend to identify our earlv Lowe familv are the census records of Orangeburgh County, a State land Grant and a St~tte Indent issued in oayment for suoulies to the military during the Revolutionary War.

Thomas Lowe was issued a land grant along the Edisto River in Orangeburgh District in 1768.

On Deeember 19th, 1783, there begqn a series of claims and indents for one John Lowe of Orangeburgh Countv, South C9rolina, that continued through January 14th, 1788 when this letter from John Lowe seems t~ have elosed the file on his claims -

The 14th January 1788 Dear Sir~

Will vou be so obliging as to call at the Treasurer's office for an indent aa I supplied our troops with three head of cattle and some other provisions in the time or the War. Don't fail and I will amply satisfy you for any trouble vou mav be at because I am in want of indent to pay tax.

I am as ever, vour sineere friend, JOHN LOWE

On February 2nd, 1788- John Lo~ Aect ..... Rec'd 2 February 1788 from the State a full satisfaction for the within aecount in an indent #3318 X.

JOHN COOK Photost~ts or these papers were obtained from the Archives of

South Carolina. There appearB in the 1790 Census of Orange burgh County, one

John Lowe as heA.d of a household; no Lowes anoear after this date in the census re<~ords for Or~ngeburgh County.

However, in the 1800 Newberrv County Census, John Lowe aonears -a~ to 45 1 Female to 45 1 Male 10-16 1 Male 16-26 ~ Female 10-16

In the 1810 Newberry County Census, John Lowe appears -age to 45 1 Female to 45 1 Male 45 nlus

In the 1820 Newberry County Census, John Lowe a'Sain A.ooears -age to 45 1 Female to 45 1 Male 45 plus

In Newberrv County was one Samuel Cannon who died there in 1791 and in whose will are named his wife, Lvdia, daughter of Isaac Pennington~ and hie chlldren- one or whom was Lvdia. (unmqrried). Could this Lydia Cannon be the same Lydia Cannon who married John Lowe?

There is a "W'ill in Orange Countv, North C~rolin~, nrobated S~ptember 1768, for Isaae Greason, Teste who identifies Margaret G~eason as the wife of ........ Lowe.

Family tradition has it that Lvdia Cannon Lowe ~q~~ ~~~ose the mountR.ins w.1th her family who considered her s. woman of courage. Since no mention that any one could recall was ever made to her husband, it was presumed that she was a widow when she came into Tennessee.

No publie or family reeord substantiates this tradition unless at some future iate, a reAeareher will identify the Lvdia Lowe who reeeived the land Grant in Hickman County as being the same Lvd.ia Lowe who was buried under a tree in the orchard or her son, Gabriel Lowe, in Williamson County.

The grave was unmarked but a granddaughter remembers nlay~~~ around the grave and feeling sorrv for the little old lady lvin~ below.

District, South Carolina, died 7 March 1882 in Williamson County, Tennessee, where his obituary reads as follows -11 A well known ei ti zen or Willi!:l,mson County, Tennesse, was born Ma.rch 8, 18~J8 in South Carolina. From there he moved to Whit~ Oak Springs in East Tennessee, and from there to Bedford County and later to Williamson Countv. After a long life or energv, industry~ sobriety and fair dealings, he died. He was buried last Tu e s da :·r in his own Ceme te rv among the member-s or his family who had nreeeded him. In 1842, he nr6reased ~eligion and joined the church; he was a MethodiAt and lived a consistent member a1wa vs, :r-eac·iv for every good wot'k and wor-d. The Rev. W. R. Peebles on this sad occasion delivered a. ve'!'y aeceotable sermon and aeeounted. the manv virtures and excellencies of this good man's life and char~cter. Thus, one by one, the nioneer fathers are being iorn from us by the l"ude hand or ~ea.th. The men of this stamn are getting too scarce in our County and State. In the busy field or Official Life he never entered, he was satisfied to remain in ihe quiet vale or life and diseharge to the full all the duties exaeted or him in amassing prooertv and rearing a large and rt~fined family of children. His examnle is a bright one to be f<,llowed by the ore sent generation of voung man. To
