For many, the annual visit to our physi-cian’s office for a physical can be both posi-tive and negative. Most physicians have our records on a computer and can quickly refer-ence the results of last year’s physical and remind us of what we were told in case we forgot.

With the arrival of February 19th, we will once again get the opportunity to re-examine ourselves and do what needs to be done dur-ing Great and Holy Lenten period. The Church prescribes a diet that can benefit our spirituality: a period of fasting; extra services for our participation, and Epistle and Gospel readings which will remind us of the road of humility of which we must all travel.

Rev. Alexander Schmemann, of Blessed Memory, in his classic book “Great Lent: Jour-ney to Pascha” made it easy to grasp a better understanding of not only Great and Holy Lent, but the Sundays leading up to Clean

Monday. The book is a must read for all Or-thodox Christians. We cannot walk the walk of the Lenten period without fully understand-ing what each step means and how we are to cross the finishing line on Holy Pascha.

Our Parish of Saints Constantine and Hel-en will offer the following Lenten services which will give us all the opportunity to partic-ipate in the readings of the services. telides on the recent death of Tom's mother Evroulla Pantelides whose funeral took place at the Annunciation Cathedral in Norfolk on January 23rd.

ILL AND NEEDING OUR PRAYERS: We wish a speedy and complete recovery

to our friends and fellow parishioners who have been ill and/or hospitalized recently: Libby Grepiotis, Angie Karatsikis, Stacy Koumbas, Jeannete Orlino Agnes Samos an John Thomas. PERASTIKA SAS!!!!!!

THANK YOU: Anna Mageras would like to thank parish-

ioners for their prayers, phone calls and cards while she was ill.

PARISH ASSEMBLY: Our next Parish General Assembly is sched-

uled for Sunday, February 25 following a luncheon after Service.

CHURCH YARD SALE: SAVE THE DATE - REMINDER that

the CHURCH YARD SALE will be held on Feb-ruary 10th, 2018 between 8 am and 4 pm in Sacalis Hall - proceeds to benefit ongoing maintenance projects. Donations may be dropped off at the church beginning on Mon-day, February 5th.

    2018 PARISH COUNCIL:

The 2018 Parish Council took the oath of office on January 7, 2018. Frank Peri was elected Parish Council President. The entire Council is shown in the first column of page 1 of the Cross+Roads. Thank you for your ser-vice to our Parish.

CALL FOR ALTAR BOYS: Young Men Needed to Serve As Altar Boys We are always looking for reliable and faith-

ful young men, between the ages of 8 and 18, to join our dedicated team of acolytes and serve their Church as Altar Boys.

Our community is fortunate to have a dedi-cated group of young men currently serving as Altar Boys. Our acolytes are organized into three teams who serve once every three weeks (around 17 times throughout the year). A separate schedule is published for Holy Week and most Altar Boys serve during two services that week. When serving during a particular week, we ask that the boys ar-rive promptly a few minutes before the start of the Liturgy (roughly 9:50 to 10:00). If your son is nervous about serving, no worries, there are plenty of skilled and seasoned members of the team who will introduce him to the responsibilities and help bring him along.

The schedule and team assignments for this Ecclesiastical Year started this past Sep-tember, but it is not too late to join. I would like to add your son as a new Altar Boy start-ing shortly after the first of the year. If your son is interested, I’d like to invite you to at-tend an information session on February 18th, immediately following Sunday School, in one of the upstairs classrooms. Or you can talk to me at church, send me an email at [email protected], or call 757.218.2053.

In closing, service as an Altar Boy in the liturgical celebrations of our Church remains one of prominence and distinction. It is con-sidered the foundation and development of a young man’s stewardship to the Church; a service that is offered to God as a regular offering of talent and ability, and is an experi-ence which every young man will cherish for the rest of his life. I pray your son will join our team.

C, C C N PHILOPTOCHOS We thank all our members

who worked so diligently to pre-pare and serve our Vasilopita Luncheon of January 14. The meal was delicious as always. Our heartfelt thanks go to our great chefs for once again giving us an excellent meal. Of course, our sincere thanks also to our patrons for their continued sup-port and patronage, without whose continued support we would be unable to pursue the funding of our various charitable efforts. Those we help thank you as well.

Ladies of the Philoptochos and all members of our Commu-nity, we continue to work with our AOK Project. If you are interested in being part of the very worth-while project either by participat-ing physically or helping financial-ly or otherwise, please contact

Ellie Costulis, H833-8181, C303-3080, and let her know that you want to help.

Also, be sure to bring us your "box tops for education" and de-posit them in the appropriate receptacle in the Narthex. Our Literacy Committee continues to help area schools through these "box tops for education" to pur-chase needed classroom items that are not otherwise funded by school appropriations.

Don't forget also to inform Kathy Dermanis of any military members of our Community that you might know who are

deployed overseas. Kathy and her committee will make sure that such person or persons receive a package of goodies from home.

Our February obligations to the National are: A contribution to the Autism Assistance Fund which heightens awareness of autism with assistance and sup-port; also, a contribution to Saint Photios Shrine which provides assistance to preserve the Saint Photios National Shrine.

Sisters, Chapter dues are $38.00 and are payable now. Please, remit your dues to

Maria Vidakis, corr. secretary, who will issue you a receipt be-fore turning the money over to the treasurer.

Our Fall Bake Sale was very successful, and we thank all our friends from within and outside the Orthodox community for their support each year. Our core

members also deserve a lot of credit for always answering the call to action and working dili-gently to assure the success of every project we undertake. The proceeds from the bake sale helped us to pay off the remain-ing balance for the 400 banquet chairs we had purchased for the Hellenic Center. Kudos to all of us for undertaking such a big project and for bringing it to frui-tion in less than three years. Again, we express our love and gratitude to our anonymous member for loaning us the mon-ey to complete the last payment of our project.

Our Christmas get-together on December 10th was a fulfilling and spiritually moving event. Our members donated many items for the Menchville House and the angelic voices of the Hamp-ton Roads Academy’s choral ensemble left us spiritually moved. We express our appreci-ation to this wonderful group and to their outstanding director, Mrs. Robin Steinberger. We also thank our wonderful hostesses Anna and Zena Mageras, Stepha-nie Kailos, Leah Hionis, and Athe-na Savvas for the delicious brunch and Frances Polizos for the beautiful decorations.

We extend our love and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mrs. Jeanette Orlino and Mrs. Angie Karatsikis who are ill and undergoing rehabilitation at the

Riverside Rehabilitation Facili-ty on Buxton Avenue in Newport News. May the Lord be with you both and protect you always.

We thank all those parish-ioners who served as hosts in December and January. The hosts for February are:

Barry Hendricks, Bob Demson, Nick Matthews, Zena Mageras, Peter Johns, Greg Bicouvaris, Joanna Val-las, Tom Grepiotis, Dr. Stavroula Gailey

    Absent: Howard Mandeville, Elias Doulgerakis

Guest: Barbara France, Kent Paumier, Frank Peri, John Dermanis, Dr. Bobby Garofalis, Anastasia The-odorogiannis

The meeting convened at 18:35 with an opening prayer by Father George. The following items were discussed:

II: Minutes: Peter Johns made motion to ap-

prove the meeting minutes of the October 2017 meeting; seconded by Greg Bicouvaris, passed unanimous-ly.

III: Correspondence: Letter dated October 17, 2017

from His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey on the finan-cial crisis with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Letter dated October 30, 2017 from His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey following up on his Oct 17 letter in regards to the financial situation of the Greek Ortho-dox Archdiocese. Also included is the financial report presented at the Archdiocesan Council Meetings by Mr. Michael Psaros, treasurer of the Archdiocesan Council.

Letter dated October 31, 2017 from Peter Arbes, Chairman of the Metropolis Finance Committee in-forming us of our 2018 To-tal Commitment to the Archdiocese. Passed to Zena Mageras, Treasurer, for input in 2018 Budget.

Letter dated October 31, 2017 from the Benefits Committee of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Amer-ica outlining the Clergy Compensation Plan guidelines for 2018. Passed to

Zena Mageras, Treasurer, for input in 2018 Budget.

IV: Treasurer’s Report: Zena Mageras presented the

    Balance Sheet and Budget/Actuals (attached)

V: Visitor’s Comments: Barbara France reported on the

rentals. No additional rentals until mid-Feb. After mid-Feb, rentals are booked through June 2018.

Barbara discussed the status of our industrial mixer. Our current mixer had been repaired by Jack Georgalas’ team at TriCities and was working a few weeks leading up to the fall festival. It was returned to TriCities last week for further repair and unit’s age and unavailability of parts we don’t know when it will be returned or if it can even be re-paired. Immediate problem facing us is that the Ladies Philoptochos will be preparing and baking Vasilopita in the next two weeks and need a mixer to mix the dough. Barbara has checked various rental vendors and they don’t have industrial mixers for rent. She has also checked with Costa Theodorogiannis and he has a lead on one we might be able to borrow, problem is it is in Winston Salem. Barbara is checking with Restaurant Depot to see if they have any leads on mixers. A new 60 qt. industrial mixer runs between $12K to $16K. Barbara agreed to work all sources, to include some leads Dick Moylan has. Nick Matthews will investigate leads with some contacts he has.. With the Thanksgiving Holi-day this week, time is of the essence and we will need to make a decision soon.

VI: Committee Reports: Youth Ministry Barry announced that Ben Franks

tendered his resignation as Director of Youth Ministries and his last day is November 21, 2018. Parish Council will immediately begin the search for a new Youth Ministry Director to include activating the job announce-

VIII: Unfinished Business: Library repairs to be updated at

the next meeting. VIII: New Business: Support to Regional Youth Minis-

try Events. We received a request from the Orthodox Christian Clergy Brotherhood of Hampton Roads for support to regional youth ministry events:

    A. Request for $1,000 payable to the "Virginia District Fund". This fund, centered at the Cathedral in Rich-mond, serves as a resource pool for regional youth events among the Greek Orthodox parishes. From this account, ground work is laid for the annual Spring GOYA Lenten Retreat and Camp Good Shepherd - Virginia. All the Greek Orthodox churches in the area are contributing to this fund, with each church contributing to its ability. This fund was established by the clergy and youth ministry direc-tors so no community is burdened with seed money to organize these events.

    B. Request for $250 payable to the "Orthodox Christian Clergy Broth-erhood of Hampton Roads". Each parish is asked to provide seed mon-ey to support the Orthodox Christian

Fellowship (OCF) Retreat held annual-ly at the College of William and Mary.

Howard Mandeville is seeking preliminary proposals for replacing the Church’s HVAC system, to in-clude the four units and air han-dlers. In addition, he is getting esti-mates for both heat pump units and natural gas units. Regarding the natural gas option, Virginia Power has surveyed our site and will run the gas lines at no charge. To move forward with the natural gas option, Virginia Natural Gas, VNG, would require an irrevocable letter of credit from our bank in the amount of $1,800 at contract signing. Suspect the premium/origination on this would by approximately 2%. Barry asked that it be clarified that we are not looking at making an immediate decision and that a new parish coun-

cil will need to decide how to pro-ceed. We are simply taking prudent measures and getting estimates to help expedite the process next year.
