The cruise was wonderful. We sailedon what was at the time, the largestcruise ship in the world; “RoyalCaribbean’s Harmony of the Seas.” Ithad everything you can imagine, and thegroup enjoyed it all. If that wasn'tenough, we had a honeymoon, a 50thbirthday and two engagements to cele-brate. Congratulations to the newly-weds,Cheryl and David Carlson. I won’ttell you about the 50th birthday butcongratulations to Bill Yungk & RondaSarner-Anderson and Gary Krimmel &Elizabeth Springfield on their engage-ments.A big thank you to all the cruisersfrom the Burlingame family.

Many Zuhrah Shriners, includingmyself, attended the 165th AnnualCommunication of the Grand Lodgeat the Minnesota Masonic HeritageCenter in April. We had a great timeand the membership committee dis-played our booth in tandem with theLegion of Honor promoting theirexcellent degree team.We had a greattime meeting with Masons fromacross the state of Minnesota andtelling them of the many activities andevents we have at Zuhrah. I want tocongratulate our new Grand Master,Most Worshipful Brother Ed Halpaus, and all of his officers for the comingyear, but most especially Ill. They now have Zuhrah’snewest club to join, "Cheers", thanksto Scott Hughes and Clif Bailey.Nobles, please stay active in Zuhrah. Hello! While trying to decide what to talk

about this month, I happened to get twoseparate phone calls about dues andtheir payment options.Topic decided.

Let’s start in the beginning. Duesnotices and reminders come from Tampanow, not from this office. My understand-ing is that the change took place in 2017but I could be mistaken with the timeline. What that means is that no one herecontrols when they go out,or how manyreminders people get. I had heard thatone time they sent email notices andsome people accidentally got five in a dayor two. Oops.Tampa also sends out thecards and stickers now. Once dues arepaid it triggers their system to queue thestickers to be sent. If you need a newcard or think that you should have got-ten your stickers already or they are lost,I am able to order you new ones.

To actually pay your dues, or anythingyou are paying to Zuhrah really, thereare several options. We happily acceptchecks or cash through the mail or inperson. We also are quite happy to takecredit cards. At the Zuhrah website, ifyou scroll to the bottom of the page, there is a link for Payments & Donations.Once you click on that is will take you toour payment system. I try to list anythingthat may be out there to pay for on thefront page. If I miss something or it is anodd item, you can always put it underZuhrah General Fund and make a note. The system will accept the major creditand debit cards and can also make trans-fers from checking and savings accounts. If people are using a credit card andwould rather not do it online, give me acall. I am always happy to take yourmoney.

If you have questions about yourdues, or really anything with your mem-bership, as always, don’t hesitate to callthe office, and I will do my best to help.

Thank you all!Jennifer

Cars are permitted in designated areas of the beach from sunrise to sunset, tidal conditions permitting.

SHRINERS HOSPITAL – TWIN CITIES

Bears That Carevisit children’s

hospitalsThe State Patrol’s charity Bears That Care visit-

ed two hospitals close to Easter this spring. We vis-ited the University of Minnesota MasonicChildren’s Hospital and the Shriners Hospital. Atthe University we passed out goodie bags contain-ing a coloring book, crayons, small toys, and a BeanieBaby. Some of the kids too old or too young toenjoy a goodie bag received a big stuffed bear.

One volunteer had talked to his mother aboutthe visits he went on and explained the items wepassed out to the children. So, she took it uponherself to sew a personal size Kleenex holder thatalso fit a chapstick and 2 oz.hand sanitizer. She theneven filled all the hand made holders with a pack-age of Kleenex, chapstick and a container of handsanitizer! This was a very nice addition to ourgoodie bag program. We passed these out to theolder kids at both the University Hospital and at

Shriners Hospital. A few might have even madetheir way into the hands of some pretty nurses.

At the Shriners Hospital we passed out somesuckers that she had included. We are guided byChild Family Life Specialists to the differentrooms and leave a goodie bag with the family,we chat a bit and move on to the next room.

Bears That Care has been visiting area hospi-tals since 1987. Uniformed Troopers arrive intheir squad cars and we bring with us SmokeyBear and McGruff the Crime Dog. New this yearwas the addition of Officer Judy Hopps from themovie Zootopia. Officer Hopps was a big hit! Allthe kids knew who she was and wanted a pho-tograph with her. Some of the parents even rec-ognized her and wanted a photograph, too.

I attended Grand Lodge and was ableto witness Most Worshipful BrotherEdward R.Halpaus being installed as ournew Grand Master for the 2018-2019year. Because of the inclement weather,he cut his speech short, but he didcover part of his theme for the ensuingyear. Now at home, I am looking at thepin that he presented to those Masonswishing to receive one, and it remindsme of his remarks. Part of his theme is“civility” and it is clearly identified onthe pin he has commissioned.

I thought I knew the meaning of“civility.” Most Worshipful Brother Edthinks deeply about Masonic topicsand teachings, so I thought someresearch would be in order.

Wikipedia identified the word bystating, “Civility comes from the wordcivilis, which in Latin means “citizen.”Civility is more than the individual’sactions as a citizen. When civility func-tions properly, usually there are manycitizens performing their civic duties bytaking part in the political process (vot-ing, governance), which is also known ascivic engagement.”

Looking at this quotation we are onceagain presented with the word “duty.”We as Masons should be very familiarwith the concept of “duty” and it onceagain presents itself. Yes, it also meanswhat I initially thought of workingtogether and exercising politeness. Thewriting goes on to also state, “Thenotion of positively constructive civilitysuggests robust, even passionate,engage-ment framed in respect of differingviews.” I think these are important con-cepts to keep in mind. It turns out theword “civility” truly is a word with deepmeaning and, as you think about thisword, it can lead you down many paths.

Prom Party for ShrinersHospital patients is a

highlight of spring

The Divan Ladies are developing a Ladies Mentoring program in tandem with the Zuhrah Strong MembershipCommittee. One feature of the program is direct communication to the Ladies about events happening at Zuhrah forthe Noble's Lady and family, Zuhrah Ladies Connect.Another aspect is personal contact with the new Noble Lady dur-ing the time the noble is going through the Ceremonial. In the near future The Zuhrah Ladies Guidebook will serve asan information resource tool, and will be available at www.zuhrah.org, LadiesInfo (tab in the upper right corner).

Do you have a question? Email it to [email protected] and you will receive a response from a member ofthe Ladies Mentoring team.

Do you know a Lady who would like to be added to the Ladies Connect communications? Email her name to [email protected].

The Prom Party at the Minnesota Masonic Home inBloomington was held on Saturday night, April 7th. Andthere were one hundred seventy people there, including thevolunteers and staff with about one hundred fifty kidsdancing their hearts away all evening long. As in previousprom events, kids were there from six states. A very dedi-cated staff to work with kept everything running smoothly. It all starts with the volunteers decorating with balloonsdonated by Anagram International. This whole event iscoordinated by Maureen Johnston of the Shriners Hospitaland her staff.

Such as Carol, who took all the beautiful pictures; thevideographer, Aaron, and his assistant, Megan. Then therewas the DJ, Jeff Atkinson, and of course the MinnesotaSchool of Cosmetology students who made all the girlslook beautiful. This year, we had five Guardians on hand tomake sure everything went smoothly and helped conductthe Grand March. Emcee for the Grand March was KenBarlow, the Channel Five weatherman. Ken’s wife,Theresa,

was also at the party as she also works at Shriners Hospital;she was working at the check-in station for the prom party.

The party is primarily funded by the Units and Clubs ofZuhrah and has been responsible for the last six years topay for the rented dance floor, the pizza and Subway sand-wiches for the party. The Guardians would like to say a bigThank You for the financial support from the followingUnits, Clubs and individuals. The amounts vary from $20 to$100: the Oriental Band, ZARC, Horsemen, Funsters, SteelBand, 101, Cycle Corps, Rod & Gun, Ceremonial, Patrol,Antique Cars, Band, Cobra Corps, Robbinsdale ASC, BirakSC, Bloomington ASC, Litchfield ASC, Minnesota Valley ASC,Owatonna ASC,Anoka,ASC,Torsk Club, Socialites, Ho HoSC, Phil Epstein, Curt Quast,Van Nelson, and, of course, theGuardians.

The Guardian Unit has reached out to the other templesthat send patients to the Minneapolis Shriners Hospital andexpect some of them will also contribute to this event nowand in the future.

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS

Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends,First, on behalf of the entire Steel

Drum Band, Happy Mother’s Day to allthe special ladies.

Hopefully Spring and Summer willkick Old Man Winter out of here sowe can get ready for parade season!

Our parade schedule is shaping upnicely this year. We have already beeninvited back to several of our ‘normal’parades. The Steel Drum Band and theMariners were included on the CelebrateNortheast Parade’s Save the Date flyer.

Our big concern this year is will wehave enough panners to perform at ourparades. Some members are having somehealth issues which will prevent themfrom making many of our parades. If youhave ever considered being in a paradeunit, I hope you would strongly considerjoining us in the Steel Drum Band. Wewelcome new players on our steeldrums as well as in our percussive sec-tion which includes the claves, maracas, tambourine, bongos or congas. We willteach you very quickly and painlessly.Wehave practice on Saturday mornings anda monthly business meeting the 1stTuesday of each month at 7 p.m. All ofthis takes place at the Plymouth MasonicLodge in Crystal. If you should need aride, I am sure we can arrange that aswell. My contact info is listed below.TheBand travels to and from the parades inan air conditioned van and performs ona beautiful float much to the delight ofadoring crowds. With the enthusiasticcrowds and the camaraderie of your fel-

low Nobles, there isn’t much more youcould ask for. Give us a try, you’ll like it.

A tip of the baton goes to ourQuartermaster Keith Braiedy and BrianBusch for getting the van and float out ofstorage and all prepped for the summer.

The Sunshine Committee alsoreports several members continue toundergo various treatments. We arekeeping the following in our thoughtsand prayers, Cookie Burlingame, JimBurlingame, Sr. PP, Grumpy Garton, Pegand Larry Horwedel, Bob Johnson, DeeJohnson, Tom Lind, Tom MacLeod,Marilyn Powers, Sunny Reiners andAdrian Skytland, PP.

Birthday wishes go out to LadiesLinda Burlingame (2nd), BettePeterson (10th), Sharon Hendrickson(17th) and to our Nobles AndrewHockert and his birthday buddy LarryHorwedel (both on the 29th).Anniversary congratulations go out toGloria and Brian Busch (1st).

To continue the series on the ques-tions the Band receives at parades:

Q: Why are you wearing that funnyshirt? (a Hawaiian shirt)

A: In my opinion, our uniforms maybe the most comfortable ones of all theZuhrah parade units as we wearHawaiian shirts, a bolo tie, Dockers, astraw hat and white ‘sneakers’.With thisuniform and riding on a covered float, even on the hottest days, we are com-fortable playing. Plus, after a parade wecould hit our favorite watering hole fora crushed ice cocktail and fit right in.

In honor of Mother’s Day, here is aquote from WB George Washingtonregarding his mother, MaryWashington: “My mother was the mostbeautiful woman I ever saw.All I am I oweto my mother. I attribute my success in lifeto the moral, intellectual and physical edu-cation I received from her.”

Greetings, Nobles,Given the weather, we had a great

Easter Egg Hunt this year as we had 60children and over 80 adults in atten-dance.As well as the normal Easter EggColoring Contests and the annual“Crawl for Coins”, we added some newgames. We also raffled off several Easterrabbits and bears as well as a boy’s and agirl’s bike.Oh, the smiles on the winners’faces were heart warming. The proceedsof the bike raffle allowed us to donate$250 to the Shriner’s Hospital Women’sAuxiliary. So thank you all who attend-ed and worked, especially to Wheel’s son(Thomas) who volunteered to wear theBunny suit. And an extra big Thank Youto the 101’s and the Guardian’s. It wouldbe very difficult to do the Hunt withoutyour assistance.

We voted to attend the Legion ofHonor Omelet Breakfast on April 22nd,with the Funsters picking up the tab foreach couple attending.

Just a reminder, on May 19th isHospital Day at our Minneapolis ShrineHospital. Let’s get a good group ofFunsters in attendance and give Zuhraha good showing.

Larry (Ziggy) has been working onour summer parade schedule. Soundslike it will definitely be a busy July!

Hello, Brother Nobles. It has been a few months since we

posted an article in the Arabian. It’s abouttime I get back to this.We have not dis-banded, nor do we intend to. Our grouphas been inactive as far as our originalpurpose was.The Zuhrah Amateur RadioCorps was founded in 1949 to provideradio communication at various pointsalong our Zuhrah Shriners parades.Carrying two way radios, we were ableto assist in keeping all units in a paradeequally spaced and paced. If some eventoccurred at the front, or anywhere elsein the line, stopping or slowing the pace,we could radio this info to our membersalong the parade line to stop or slowdown to prevent units bunching up orspreading out, creating jams or gaps inthe line.We once had members embed-ded inconspicuously in each unit of theparade. Every unit was perfectly spacedand paced. When the parade had to stopor slow down, it was so precise it lookedas though it was deliberately planned justso you could enjoy the unit in front ofyou for a few moments.

In many cases our parades were solong the police would have to stop theparade to allow traffic to flow through

cross streets. The police and our radiooperators would be able to worktogether to simultaneously stop everyunit of the entire parade, even the frontunits, again keeping every unit evenlyspaced while traffic control policedrained cross streets of waiting vehicles.

We began by using military surplustwo way radio sets called walkie-talkies. Beginning in 1942, these radiosets, produced by Galvin Mfg Co.,under the brand name Motorola, withthe military designation SCR 536,(Google it) were put into use duringWWII for short distance communica-tion on the battlefield. After the war, like other military equipment survivingthe war, these sets found their wayinto civilian use by police, constructionprojects and amateur radio operators. This led to the creation of the ZuhrahAmateur Radio Corps.

Today the members of ZARC at arecent meeting have decided we willcontinue our group and remain a sup-porting unit of Zuhrah. We have 15members with 3-6 attending ourmeetings. We invite your inquiries. Ourlunch meetings are open, and we wel-come your attendance. We love tohave visitors; it brings new conversa-tion into our lives. If you like shortmeetings, great food, interesting talk, and can break away for lunch, pleasejoin us.We meet at the VFW Post on67th and Lyndale Avenue South inRichfield, Minnesota, at 11:30 a.m., thesecond Thursday of each monthexcept June, July and August.

73, (hamspeak for Best Regards.)

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS

Greetings from the ZuhrahHorse Patrol: 62

Horseman Clyde Brink passed awayon January 13.He joined the Horse Patrolin 1993. He was a graduate of HamlineUniversity and went on to work for StateFarm Insurance. Dick Rindal was able toattend Clyde’s funeral and extend condo-lences for the Horse Patrol.

We had several visitors at ourMarch Stated Meeting.Neil Brodinof Brodin Studios, Inc. visited us.He gavea brief history of the company, whichdesigns and build statues to honor themilitary and fallen police officers. Neilhad previously visited the ranch and indoing so, this triggered his memory thatthey had previously made statuary ofShriners. Neil was able to track downthe last Shriner statue the company had(it’s about 10 inches tall) within theirstore rooms. He affirmed that BrodinStudios is a firm supporter of theShriners and our mission. He stated thatthey had made a cast of the Shriner stat-ue so they can being producing themagain. Lastly, Neil made a gift of the stat-ue to the Horsemen to honor all we do.We gratefully accepted his gift.

Also visiting us in March were repre-sentatives of the American Legion and theDepartment of Veterans Affairs (VA).Bonnie from the American Legion hadvisited us for a Camp Achieve day lastsummer and thought about whetherthere was not something similar we coulddo with veterans receiving care from theSt Cloud hospital. Brett from the VAspoke to us and conveyed there are manyveterans from many conflicts who strug-gle on a daily basis with their experiences. He asked that we consider how we couldhelp by potentially providing the opportu-nity for veterans to visit the ranch. We areeagerly investigating what we can do tosupport our veterans. Stay tuned!

Riding has been hit or miss thismonth. With the brief and tauntingglimpse of Spring in mid-March,ThreeRivers Parks closed the trails to hors-es until further notice. Little did any-one know what we would get 10-12more inches of snow in March andearly April. We have started practicingin the indoor arena recently. I’ve notheard what the results have been yet.

Spring (in other parts of the country, for sure) typically represents re-birthand return. In California, the ‘Return ofthe Swallows to the Mission SanJuan Capistrano’ serves as confirma-tion that the brutally cold California win-ter is truly over and that the Californianscan store their winter jackets and stock-ing caps until Jack Frost arrives next win-ter. (Honest to God, young vibrantCalifornians were wearing winter jacketsand hats in 60 degree weather. It had tobe seen to be believed.) San JuanCapistrano is nestled in the valleys ofSouthern California, about halfwaybetween Anaheim and San Diego (as theSwallow flies) and just in from the coast.

For the past 60 years, the communityaround San Juan Capistrano has cele-brated the return of the Swallows witha parade and fiesta. The area actually hasa long history of ranching and horse-

back riding which continues today. Tohonor that history and local culture, theparade itself is billed as the ‘largest, non-motorized parade in the United States’.Allowable modes of transportation arefoot, bicycle, unicycle and horse. Ourscout was at this year’s parade to seewhat it was all about; here is the report.

The parade is very large from theperspective number of units, length ofthe parade, and people attending.Basically, the whole town of San JuanCapistrano is shut down all day (thelocal Amtrak train kept running).Parkingwas available about a 15-20 minute walkfrom the route. The parade kicks-off at11 a.m. and runs 15-20 city blocks (fromwhat I could see. I never saw the startand I never saw the end). The parade is,in fact, so long that there are at leastthree announcer/ emcee booths todescribe each of the units as they go by.As far as attendance, the day is likeCowboy St Patrick’s Day: all the localscome out in various forms of Cowboyand Cowgirl regalia (both with andwithout ‘trail’ cred: older folks, Google‘street cred’. It’s a term used by kidsthese days). Along the parade route Iwalked, the people were 4-6 deep alongthe sides of the streets.

I would estimate that 60% of the unitsin the parade were either on horse orpulled by horses. Local dignitaries andfiesta royalty were either in 30-foot wag-ons or in very elegant carriages. Thehorses were every breed, color and sizeimaginable. The US Marine Corp waswell represented with their MountedColor Guard leading the parade followedby the Marine Corp band from nearbyCamp Pendleton. Law enforcement was

also well represented by the CaliforniaHighway Patrol and Orange CountyMounted Patrols both present. After 2.5hours and 90 or so units, I had to leave.I believe the parade was three-fourthsover when I left. There were rumors ofa Shrine unit being in the parade, but ithad not come along by the time of mydeparture.

This parade is truly a horse unit’s dream.Logistically, it’s probably not possible forZSHP to participate but man o’ man, wecan dream…

A few years back, who knows when itdoesn’t really matter, a jovial brotherwas recommended by another brothernicknamed “High Pockets”, to become amember of the Zuhrah Cycle Corps. After the usual process, this jovial broth-er was unanimously accepted as a mem-ber and we all welcomed Edwin Reiners.

At the time, we all had no idea theride (S’cuse the pun) we were in for.Brother Ed Reiners brought newideas, outspoken opinions, endlessenergy and talent to the Cycle Corps.

For me, the ride culminated in a tripto the Midwest in Rapid City where theCycle Corps was a robust pack of avidHarley riders doing their thing for thebetterment of the Shriners Hospital. One of the brothers who was wellacquainted with the area after his sev-eral trips to Sturgis, arranged for a ridefor all riders in attendance where wewould go through Custer State Park,Needles Highway, many small townsand gift shop stops, the town of Sturgisand finally a stop at a steak house for adinner. Fantastic! It was made betterbecause half way through the ridebrothers High Pockets and Ed Reinersdecided that it was so hot that theyneeded to ride without shirts. Now, ifyou can remember Ed’s stature of a few

years ago, that was a sight to behold.I digress.Time marches on when one

day I received a distressed phone callfrom Brother Ed’s daughter Alison, stat-ing that her “Daddy” had a diagnosisthat would take him from us in a shorttime frame. I can’t describe to you thegut wrenching feeling at the time but, Iknow we all have been there at sometime in our lives. Fast forward to theMidwest here in Bloomington where, when Ed and I met in the Oasis, helamented that this is his last one and heis enjoying it. I was speechless!

To Ed:It hurts so bad, to say goodbyes.....Pain is felt, with tear-filled eyes.......The news we dread want not and

fear.....Suddenly, reality becomes crystal

clear.......Knowing the risk, and chances we

take.....We start up our motors, the trip we

do take.....With freedom, and passion, the wind

in your hair...........You may not have made it, but I'll meet

you there...........I'm not sure when, but I'll see you. my

friend............Making sure that your journey, never

will end........Riding beside you, our spirits let

free......All of us Shriners, together we’ll be!!

Ride on, my brother, till we meetagain........... Old Guy!

Greetings from the membership ofBirak. We hope your Spring has gotten akick-start now that the snow has finallyquit. As I write this, however, there arepredictions of a huge snowstorm to hitthe southern half of the state. Ice on thelakes in central Minnesota was meas-ured about at least two feet recently, and it was solid! We need some sun.

Twenty members trekked to Ten MileLake Steakhouse for the Circus Kick-Off dinner and meeting April 2. Due tosnow, slippery roads and near blizzardconditions in the metro area, sevenwere unable to make the meeting, including the four Divan members fromthe Twin Cities. It was a delicious mealof chicken and ribs and nearly everyoneasked for a take-home box.

As I have mentioned before, the BirakClub is taking on a major project Saturday,August 25,to benefit the Shriners Hospitalfor Children – Twin Cities. At theMinnesota Masonic Heritage Center, weare attempting the Guinness Book WorldRecord Largest Bean Bag Tournament. It isEXTREMELY important that you help usget the word out NOW on this event bytalking with your friends and neighbors, contacting bars and organizations thathave held tournaments in the past to getthese teams signed up. Our March meeting was attended byour Divan members Jon Pavola andJean and Loran Goff and Judy alongwith Past Potentate from 2007 DonWurden and Carole. Our specialguests for the evening were invited byJohn and Carolyn Loutzenhizer.Sean and Tracy Gardiner are withthe Osman Shriners. Even with their busy sched-ule, we hope that they will visit us again.

Once again with good food andgood fellowship everyone experiencedan enjoyable evening.

Our ladies had an outstanding BakeSale with a 36% increase from their pre-vious record sales from last fall. At thisBake Sale, the ladies sold $1263 of theirhomemade baked goods. They donateall of this money to the wheelchair fundat our Shriners Hospital. Thank youto all of our MVSC ladies for theirgreat support of our Club and ourHospital.

This is a great opportunity for ournewer Shriners to get acquainted withour hospital. By attending, our “not-so-new” Shriners will be re-inspired bythe great work the hospital staff doeson a daily basis for our KIDS. You willleave standing a little taller and feelingthe pride of wearing your red fez.Hope to see you.

On April 6, the Prom for our hospitalpatients was held at the Masonic HeritageCenter. Teenage patients— past andpresent—from several states attended. There was a picture in the Star Tribunenewspaper of hairdressers volunteeringtheir time to fix the girls’ hair, and therewas news coverage on at least two localTV channels showing the 90 teenagersat the Prom. MVSC donated moneytowards the Prom and some of our ladiesdonated their previously used dresses forthe girls. It made you feel proud to seethe present and past hospital patientshaving a good time at their Prom.

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – CLUBS

HELLO! from the Ho Ho AreaShrine Club and Classic Cars Corps –

Our April monthly meeting was heldat Toody’s Sweet Treats in Henderson,Minnesota. If you relish the old-fashionedsoda fountain,Toody’s Sweet Treats is theplace to go as you discover the hiddengems in the various communities ofsouth central Minnesota. We had a greatturnout of 31 nobles and ladies. A deli-cious meal of pork loin, mashed pota-toes, carrots, and cornbread was served, followed by an ice cream dessert. A bigthanks to Noble Vic and Lady Shelby andNoble Ned and Lady Mary for pulling usback into Henderson.

Joining us for our meal, our guestspeaker, Becky Pollack. Becky is theExecutive Director of the Ney NatureCenter located just outside ofHenderson. After dinner, Becky gavean update of what exciting things are

Greetings, Nobles and Ladies,Today is April 15th, 2018 – a day that

my BASC brethren and I should be serv-ing hundreds of hungry people who havecome to feast on our delicious pancakesand sausages for years. Instead, I sit herelooking out my family room window atmore than a foot of snow in my yard, anda driveway that is begging for much need-ed attention from my snowblower. Thislatest spring storm started on Friday,the13th of April, so some people think it’sjust bad luck. I have a different opinion—since it’s not the first snowfall we’ve hadthis April, I think this is just Mother Natureplaying an extended April Fool’s Joke on allof us. Whichever it is—bad luck or ajoke— it’s pretty obvious that everyone inthe Twin Cities (except for the owners ofBuck Hill) are sick and tired of snow, andready for spring to arrive.

Bloomington

This is the 52nd year of BASC hostingpancake breakfasts, and according toTreasurer (and BASC historian)Phil Bemis, this is the first time in that52 year history that we have had toreschedule a breakfast. Knowing thatsomeone in our club always has to beblamed for whatever goes wrong, twoculprits have been identified. The first isme, of course. As President, whatevergoes wrong is my fault—no questionsasked. Even when my gavel was stolen atthe January installation dinner byMarshalls Wyatt and Dillon, it ulti-mately was my fault, because the officialreport submitted by Marshall Dillon isthat the gavel was “lost”. More on thatlater. The second culprit is our newestBASC member, Mac MacFarlane. Macwas officially sworn is as a member at ourApril 10th Stated Meeting—welcome toBASC, Mac! Unfortunately, the theory isthat since all past breakfasts have beenheld on time, Mac must be some sort of“bad luck” charm. I guess it makes sensesince in less than a week of membershiphe pulls something off that hasn’t hap-pened in more than a half century. I feelsorry for Mac, so I’m not going to let himcarry this burden alone—I’m sure thatthrough some extended therapy sessionsat a nearby oasis, we will be able to stillcarry our heads high. And just for therecord, this dark time in the history of theBASC will be officially known as “TheDouble Mac Attack.” Finally, the 2018BASC Spring Pancake and SausageBreakfast will be held on Sunday, April22nd at the Bloomington Event Center.

The April BASC Stated Meeting wasvery well attended, and was highlightedby the return of said “stolen/lost” gavel, which showed up at the meeting in thehands of Marshall Dillon. After pay-ment of another $5 fine, an apology andsome tears shed by yours truly, my gavelwas finally returned to its rightful ownerafter three months in captivity. Rumorhas it that the gavel (which now has thename “Waldo”) may have even accom-panied Marshall Dillon and his lovelywife Judy on a Caribbean Cruise inMarch. Just for the record, the investiga-tion into possible collusion by theMarshalls and other BASC members willcontinue throughout my term.

By the time you are reading this article,BASC will be putting the finishing touch-es on the Zuhrah Derby Party, whichwill be held at the Shrine Center onSaturday, May 5th. Registration infor-mation can be found in this Arabian andonline. We hope many of you will be ableto join us and many other nobles, familymembers and friends at this fun event.

Another big event that will be happen-ing in early May will be the delivery ofmore than 250 Flower Kits from WagnerGreenhouses. I want to personally thankeveryone who has supported the SpringFlower Fundraiser this year, and a spe-cial shout out to the Horsemen (80kits),Minnesota Valley (63 kits) and theGuardians (29 kits) for their efforts.Weknow that you are all anxiously awaitingthe delivery of these flowers, and we aresure that you will get lots of enjoymentout of them all summer long.

The next BASC Board Meeting willbe held at the home of Dave Alstrupon Tuesday, May 1st, at 7 p.m., followedby the May BASC Stated Meeting at theBloomington Event Center on Tuesday,May 8th, also at 7 p.m.All BASC mem-bers are encouraged to attend both ofthese meetings.
