from the PASTORAL COUNCIL

Our Pastoral Council met on Wednesday, May 16. We continued to discuss our plans to create something we call: Vision 20/20. It will be a comprehensive document based on our original Vision Statement that would cover the whole scope of parish life describing in detail how we envision the parish functioning by the year 2020. Hence, the name Vision 20\20.

As part of our own preparation, the council has been discussing Pierre Hegy’s book, Lazarus, Wake Up! which describes the present state of the Church in the United States. It lists several reasons for the decline of the Church and makes some suggestions for the future. The council’s initial discussion was very lively and enlightening.

The council decided to bring two important topics to all of our parish leadership in our annual June Directions meeting. Besides reviewing all that we have accomplished over the past year, we also want to discuss our financial future with these leaders. In the third part of Directions we will ask these leaders why they continue to practice their faith as Catholics and how our parish helps them to live their faith.

This fair includes all the different task oriented groups in the parish. These groups have only a few meetings to plan events and activities, but most of their time will spent doing whatever needs to be done. We also discussed ways we could use this Fall Ministry Fair to encourage people to become involved with activities that are beyond our parish: Love, INC, Big Brothers\Big Sisters, etc. We also talked about ways to recruit new members for our council.

PASTORAL COUNCIL COMMENDATIONS

The Council would like to commend the First Eucharist catechists who did a wonderful job in preparing the children to receive this Sacrament. These great catechists are Dorothy Koprowicz, Megan Zapalski. Joel Sie-man, Kelly Korch, John Korch, Cheryl Comeau, Beth Thompson, Katie Bidinger, Barb Dolkowski & Michelle Nied. Stephanie Darrish is the lead catechist who has brought focus and creativity to the program. Thanks Stephanie!

RELIGIOUS FORMATION  from Mary Mahar

Our Formation Program takes many hearts and voices to bring the Word of God to our youth and children of St. Mary Magdalen. We have been blessed by the many catechetical ministers, women, men and teens who have come, week after week, prepared to share lessons with your children. Even on the week off of classes, many of them met with other team members to plan ahead. We work as teams to meet the needs of each child and family, and to make sure we are getting the Church’s teachings across at each grade level. Many even made time to take Formation classes for certification. We have several women who break open the Word every Sunday morning in the Chapel with the children who leave Mass for Children’s Liturgy of the Word as well. We are grateful to all of you who worked so hard to help our families see Christ at work in them! Thanks and Blessings on all our Catechetical Minis-ters:

KNIGHT’S KORNER from Don Powell, Grand Knight St. Mary Magdalen Council 12295

For several weeks now, your K of C council members have been selling raffle tickets for a whole house generator. The end date for this raffle, June 9, is drawing near and we have a few of our 500 tickets left. Every year our council supports various charitable causes through fundraising activities. In addition to the pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners we have chosen this year to hold a raffle to support Pregnancy Helpline here in Brighton. Our goal is to raise $6,000 of the $40,000 needed

to purchase an ultrasound machine for Pregnancy Helpline. We are almost there but we need your support. Pregnancy Helpline assists expectant mothers to carry her child with dignity while making well-thought-out decisions. It also assists the birth father to understand his feelings, rights, and responsibilities to his child, and the child's mother. Pregnancy Helpline also offers a variety of services including clothing, formula, and diapers, tests, nursing consults and counseling on life skills, relationship issues and parenting skills. They also offer education on child abuse prevention, pregnancy issues, finance and budgeting. Pregnancy Helpline has already purchased the ultrasound machine with a loan. After only 3 weeks, four lives have been saved. We need your help. We will be in the gathering area after each Mass until June 9. The drawing will be held on that date at the Parish Golf Outing at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Pinckney. (You need not be present to win). Memories Restaurant will be hosting our final fundraiser for the Israel Retana family. It will be June 10, from 3 to 8 pm. The Schifko family has agreed to donate a percentage of the proceeds and there will also be a si-lent auction! Israel had a brain tumor removed that left him blind and in need of a wheelchair. Thanks to your gen-erosity at the K of C pancake breakfast fundraiser, the family was able to move from a cramped apartment into a handicapped accessible house which they are now renting.

Both of these fundraisers are worthy causes and if you are able, please offer your support. We thank you for always being so supportive of the Knights of Columbus. We succeed because of you! Thank you and God bless you all.

The DEACONʹS BENCH   from Dave Scharf

Are you content to just go to Church on Sunday? Are you content to just let Father, or Sister, or Deacon do it? Are you just content to contribute the minimum time, money and effort? Then please read on. This comes from the latest book I am reading and if it sparks your interest I will give you its name and author (if you ask for it).

“A church that doesn't provoke any crises, a Gospel that doesn't unsettle, a Word of God that doesn't get un-der anyone's skin, a Word of God that doesn't touch the real sin of the society in which it is being proclaimed - what Gospel is that? Very nice, pious considerations that don't bother anyone, that's the way many would like preaching to be. Those preachers who avoid every thorny matter so as not to be harassed, so as not to have conflicts and diffi-culties, do not light up the world they live in. They don't have Peter's courage, who told that crowd where the bloodstained hands still were that had killed Christ: "You killed him!" Even though the charge could cost him his life as well, he made it. The gospel is courageous; it's the good news of him who came to take away the world's sins.”

Granted this passage refers to preachers BUT WE are told in the Book of Acts to “Preach the Good News and be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8) and again in Mark 16:15 “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News to the whole creation”. Therefore, we are the preachers, you and I. But the question then becomes “Do we have the courage and conviction of Peter?”

THE OTHER BENCH  from Jim Chevalier What situation are you dealing with right now? Whatever it is, rest assured that God’s hand is upon you. There is no place on earth, not any emotional depth to which you can sink where you will not find Him. He is always there. He has carried the sorrows of all his children on the cross, and even now, he wants to take yours. All you need to do is come to him. Be sincere and ask for help. So give control of your situation to him, and the “peace of God that surpasses all understanding” will be yours. (The Eucharistic Chapel at the back of our church is open for prayer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!)

SERVANT TO MANY from Gary Prise

I recently had my performance appraisal interview/meeting with the boss, Father Dave, not God, and I was reflecting back to when I joined the parish.

We were invited to become involved, as every new member is, in some phase of the parish. It was a stretch, not really knowing anyone, not knowing what to expect. It was very comfortable coming to weekend Mass and sup-porting the parish financially. Both are important! I think the first thing my wife and I became involved in was Com-munity Life, the group that plans a variety of fun events for the parish. It was a great way to interact with other pa-rishioners. Yes there was work to be done, but I really had a good time. As time went on I became more and more involved in a variety of activities. Yes, there was a focus with each activity and some work, but it was about the fel-lowship that occurred each time.

There are a thousand reasons not to step up to the plate (work, kids and their activities, taking care of a par-ent, etc.) The reality is if each adult parishioner (and that includes the teens) got involved in just one thing, we would grow as a community of believers beyond our wildest dreams. We have those formal sign-ups, but for many activi-ties you can become involved now by contacting the office and they will direct you to the person responsible for a particular activity. I was very comfortable in the role of an advisor, what should or should not happen in our parish and in the larger Church. This parish is yours, the Church is yours too; it is easy to sit back and talk about what is wrong, however, it is rewarding making this place the living and breathing body of Christ.

YOUTH NEWS from Margaret Callaghan

Congratulations to the class of 2012! We pray for your future success. May you learn and grow from the experiences ahead in your future whether you are going away or staying home. The world awaits you! We are looking forward to celebrating with you on Sunday June 3 starting with the 9 am Liturgy. Afterwards there will be a breakfast for you and your family. Current junior students are en-couraged to help and donate food as next year it will be you we honor.

We are winding down our Youth Group Sunday meetings this month. Our last meeting is June 10. The Wagners have generously offered to open their home and pool for us from 6-9 pm. We will provide the meat and all necessary paper products. If you plan to attend also plan to bring a dish to pass. Please let me know in advance if you plan to participate and what you will bring. Be sure to mark your calendar time slot from 6-9 pm. Contact me at the above email for an address and directions.

Congratulations to Christiana Eisenhut and Carolyn Kehn who will be participating in the week long Dioce-san Youth Leadership Camp (DYLC) this summer. They will learn leadership skills and grow in their relationship with Christ. The camp is lead by past campers. They will leave June 17 and be gone all week. I personally am ex-cited for them and I know what camp has done for so many high school students in the past and around the dio-cese.

Our annual trip to Cedar Point this year is Wednesday June 27. We again will travel by bus with St. John’s in Hartland. Details and the permission slip is available online as well as a link to the Facebook event page to rsvp.

Every year at our annual Parish Picnic, the youth sponsor a Tin Can Raffle. It has become a part of all the fun with cool and useful things to look at and purchase tickets for. The tables open right after the Liturgy. Each ticket costs $1. You place the tickets in the tin can of a particular item you would like to win. Bring labels with your name and phone number on it to make the process faster. I am now accepting items or services you would like to donate and any empty coffee tins for the raffle in my office. Should you have questions, please contact me at [email protected].

MAGDALEN’S LITTLE PEOPLE    from Kathie Anderer

Our school year has come to a close. We had a great time this year and we will all have many memories to cherish in the years to come. We wish our students that are moving on the very best of every thing. We hope that it won’t be the last time we share a smile. We wish our re-turning students a great summer!

This last month was packed full of activities. We had our Mother’s Day Tea, our Daddy Donut Day, a visit from the fire department & the State Police, and our last day field trip to the Potter Park Zoo. So much fun… so little time to fit it all in.

Sign up for next year is going on now. We have a few openings available if you or someone you know is looking for a quality, Christian preschool for their young child. Let us know if we can be of service to you or some-one you know. Please call the preschool line for more information, (810) 229-0010. Leave a message with your phone number and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Have a great summer! We’ll be back before you know it.

“THAT’S A BIG TIME COMMITMENT”

This is probably one of two comments we heard quite a bit when beginning our Marriage Course, 8 Great Dates, last December/January. And yet, when springtime comes around, and golf leagues are forming, the commitment factor doesn’t appear to be an issue!

If your marriage relationship is important, please consider treating each other to our 8 Great Dates, starting up again in January 2013!

ON THE JOURNEY OF CONVERSION from Diane Kubus [email protected]

What is R.C.I.A.? It stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It’s the process by which one becomes Catholic but is better defined as a “Journey of Faith”. Inquiry begins the journey and is the opportunity for people to explore Catholic beliefs and what the church offers. The second period is the Catechumenate during which catechu-mens (the unbaptized) and candidates (already baptized) are brought to maturity in the faith through a formal study of Church teaching, a deeper commitment to living the Christian life, prayer, and by witness of their faith in the world. The period of Purification and Enlightenment, which coincides with Lent, is a time of final preparation for initiation. The Sacraments of initiation are celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Catechumens are baptized and confirmed; candidates are confirmed. The new Catholics then complete their initiation by receiving the Eucharist. The final period of Christian initiation is called Mystagogy. During this time the new Catholics deepen their grasp of the paschal mystery, making it a part of their lives through reflecting on the Gospel and sharing in the Eucharist.

The journey is a sacramental process of conversion. It is not a change of religions or denominations. It’s more like a turning, an opening to God that allows God to change us. It is a change from within that informs and affects the many dimensions of our lives. This happens when we allow God to love us enough that He reforms us, refashions us into men and women who value each other and our relationships in self-sacrificing love. This journey doesn’t end at Easter or even at the end of Mystagogy. The journey is one that we are all on. It’s never ending and all of us on our faith journeys experience conversion. Our relationship with God changes as well as our relationships with one an-other. Our prayer life changes and it changes us. Conversion happens at different times in our lives, and our experi-ences of conversion are different.

As you continue this journey of faith may your heart be open to surprise.

With reverence, gratitude and acceptance may you behold your life each day.

On every step along the way may hidden goodness come to meet you.

In meditating on your memories may courage be your companion.

As your life‐stories rise up to greet you may you welcome them home with love.

On every step of your journey may you find new grace for living.

From unexpected places in your life may blessings rise up to anoint you.

As you walk the memory road may it become a path of transformation.

As you look upon your wounds may you know the joy of healing.

In claiming the beauty of your life may you

recognize the One in whose image you are created.

In moving beyond the wounds may you

be able to take up your life and go on with your living.

Blessings on your journey!

THE  ROSARY  The rosary emerged as a popular devotional prayer during the early Mid-dle Ages. It evolved from an ancient practice of praying 150 Our Fathers for each of the 150 Psalms which people could no longer read. Strings of beads were used to keep track of the prayers. Over time, this practice merged with the practice of praying 150 Hail Marys in groups of ten; each group began with the Our Father and ended with the Glory Be. In addition, medita-tions on the life of Christ and His mother Mary were included. Pope John Paul expanded these meditations from 15 to 20. Parishioners who are members of the Third Order of Carmelites lead the rosary at St. Mary Magdalen after Liturgy on Tuesday & Friday mornings at 9:30 am.
