Use it or
Lose it!
The History of Employee Volunteering
• Mostly focused on public relations
• More recently focused on corporate social responsibility
• Emerging trend towards employee development
• What a company does in their community is increasingly important
Summary of My Conclusions
• Never more than one of the training options
• Works best for soft skills
– Patience
– Communication Skills
– Confidence
• Can be good for team development
• Accept that it does not work for everyone
3 Way Relationship
• Each has their own objectives
• Important to ensure that each equally understands and appreciates the others
• Objectives do not need to be the same – but they do need to be in sync
• It is a business transaction – not an act of charity
Employee Involvement
• Volunteering is extremely personal
• Employees may already be volunteering
• Do you know what they do in their communities?
• Capitalise on existing activities
• Link clearly to personal development needs
• Treat like any other learning activity
• Celebrate successes
Employer Commitment
• It may cost less than a training course – but it does not happen as quickly
• Employees need support to integrate into host organisation
• Make sure that host organisation know what they want to achieve and that your employee can help them to achieve it
• Treat the host organisation like a training provider
Host Organisation
• Make sure that your employees – participate in activities that are linked to specific
SMART/MUST Objectives of the host organisation
– have a manager within the host organisation
– Rules about what they must not do – vulnerable children and adults
• Make sure that – You have regular contact with the host
organisation and hold regular reviews of progress
Using Agencies
• DIY – Low cost
• Very specialised matching process
• Introduction facilitators charge money
• Still cheaper than traditional training
The Future
• The use of volunteering by organisations will increase as we become a more caring and sharing society
• Charities are becoming providers of social services and more commercial
• It will not be long before charities start charging for the opportunity to use volunteering as an employee development tool
