EURO IV

Volvo 8400 - The advanced alternative to personal

transport

The Volvo 8400 city bus combines the most advanced

technology, design, features and safety for efficient and eco-

friendly city road transportation. A robust and dependable

construction promotes high operating reliability, while the

low-entry helps swift passenger thorough-flow. The light

weight chassis also makes it possible to carry more

passengers. These properties make the Volvo

8400 low-entry a truly advanced alternative to

meet the needs of growing and congested

cities.

Robust and thoroughly tested

The Volvo 8400 is based on one of the best selling chassis

from Volvo Buses, the B7R. The sturdy dimensioned chassis

components provide high dependability and a long service life. The

new technology adopted from Volvo’s larger tourist coaches has

been introduced to make a highly regarded chassis even better.

The frame is a simple and sturdy construction with a flat

upper face for ease of body building. The chassis is delivered

in two-axle configuration with a 5940 mm wheelbase. The front

axle is dimensioned for 6.0 tonnes and the tough new rear axle

for 10.2 tonnes, which supports excellent weight distribution and

the possibility of exploiting the 16.2 tonne gross weight to the

maximum.



COMFORT, SAFETY AND

PERFORMANCEFor passengers and driver alike, the Volvo 8400 is both comfortable and safe.

The low-entry at the front and in the middle-just 350mm above the road, means

it is easy to get on and off, even for passengers with impaired mobility. The bus

is easy to drive and offers excellent road holding and like all Volvo buses it has

a high safety level, further boosted by powerful disc brakes on all wheels, roll

stabilizers and a redesigned suspension system. The rear suspension is entirely

new and contributes to a more comfortable ride and more secure road holding.

The maximum steering angle for the Volvo city bus is 53 degrees, which further

improves maneuverability.

Volvo 8400 also features a rigid front suspension. There is also considerable

freedom of choice in seat location at the higher rear part of the bus, where the

wheel housings encroach minimally into the passenger compartment.

Modern fuel-efficient engine

The engine in the Volvo 8400, the Volvo

D7E 290 , is a modern seven-litre six-

cylinder diesel engine with a turbocharger

and Intercooler. This engine is poweredwith 290 hp and conforms to the EURO

III environmental requirements. The tough,

durable and fuel-efficient engine was

originally developed for Volvo’s heavy

trucks, so there’s plenty of power in reserve

for the Volvo 8400’s gross weight of 16.2

tonnes.

The engine has a very wide torque

range and responds to the throttle instantly,

which benefits driveability. Electronic

Engine Management - EMS 2 with precise

fuel injection gives efficient combustion and

low emissions. It is now available in both

Euro III and Euro IV options, depending onthe city regulations.



A well-matched power train with

automatic transmission

The power train of Volvo 8400 is

dimensioned to get the greatest possible

power out of the engine. A 6-speed

automatic transmission with NBS feature

offers unmatched smooth progress and ride

comfort in city traffic. An integrated retarder

with a unique torque convertor enhances

braking power.Electronic fuel injection with precise

regulation of fuel quantity and injection

timing promotes low exhaust emissions and

good fuel economy.

Disc Brakes

The disc brakes in the front and rear are

of the same type as those found in Volvo’s

larger buses. The brakes feature EBS

providing fatigue-free braking power.

Tubeless Radials

Urban tyres ensures higher mileage, good

road grip and better braking.

Reliable and Durable Engine

The Volvo D7E 290 is a modern seven-litre

six-cylinder diesel engine. Power output

290 hp in Euro 3 configuration.

Electrical System

The 24-volt electrical system has 100 A

alternator (twin) with battery capacity of

165Ah.

On-Off Fan

Saves fuel. Shroud provided to improve

cooling efficiency.

Modern Electronic System

The Volvo 8400 has a modern multiplex

electronic system that offers the

possibility of detailed information about

vital vehicle data, which in turn permits

wider scope for vehicle diagnostics and

monitoring of the status and condition

of the bus. The system also carries out

automatic checks of basic functions such

as coolant level and oil, brake and turbopressure at start-up.



BUILT IN INDIA BY

VOLVOVolvo Buses in India are built at the state-of-the-art body building plant by Volvo

Buses at Hosakote, Bangalore with world-class body components, anti-corrosion

treatments, refined interiors and dust-free paint finishing process. Volvo Buses’

new plant is a unique facility that follows Volvo’s global body building practices and

quality standards. The staff at Volvo’s new plant in India has been trained in the

‘Volvo Bus Production Principles’ to achieve global quality standards.



Components

The component area is equipped with

thyristor based MIG/MAG welding

machines with fume extraction torches for

better weld control, quality of the weld and

safe and clean environment. The fixtures are

multi-variant and uni-modal for fabrication of

the structure with high dimensional control.

Anti-corrosion Process and Practices

To prevent corrosion, galvanized tubular

sections, aluminium sheets and stainless-

steel sheets are used as raw materials to

construct the bus body components. Water-

based acrylic anti-chip primer is used in the

luggage compartment to prevent chipping

during loading and unloading of baggage.

Chrome/heavy metal-free Poly Vinyl Butyral

based wash primer is used to provide

excellent adhesion to all types of substrates

(AL,SS and GI) for corrosion resistance.

Underbody of the bus is specially treated for

corrosion resistance.

Body Panel finishing

Body panels in stainless steel are flame

heated, stretched and bonded to ensure

better structural alignment and uniform

exterior finish to withstand all weather

conditions.

Interiors. Boiling water resistant

plywood of various grades and density are

used for higher floor strength and load

carrying capacity. The plywood is sealed

and fastened with Butyl tapes to reduce

noise, vibration and prevent dust from

entering the passenger area. Furnishing of

ceiling, indoor side panels, seats, carpets

and window-glass fixing is done with special

application tools to ensure excellent finish.

Paint finishing system

Polyurethane based high solids Top Coat

is provided for excellent UV, water and

humidity resistance which results in betterhardness, flexibility and extra-gloss. The

painting process is carried out in the Paint

Preparation Compartment, which is sealed

from other production areas to prevent dust

during painting. Extraction systems are in

place in the paint preparation area to ensure

environment protection.

Quality Checks and Procedures

All suppliers are certified as per Volvo’s

quality requirements for incoming materials.

Qualified quality inspectors ensure quality-

checks at all stages of body-building afterproduction process (PQA). All vehicles are

checked through the complete Green OK

process, which is developed by Volvo Bus

Corporation, Sweden. The process ensures

checks of all safety, functional and aesthetic

items, a test drive on the test track and a

30- minute shower test. All buses undergo

planned product audit checks to evaluate

against global standards. The plant follows

management systems designed to meet

ISO: 9001-2000 standards.

VOLVO ITS4Mobility -

Intelligent Transport System

In India the urban transport scenario is fast

changing with the Government launching

various initiatives at the Centre and State

levels. These initiatives help city authorities

to induct modern buses into its fleet and

improve urban mobility.

Shifting over to modern buses will

help city transport authorities combattraffic congestion and improve mobility,

with people being motivated to switch

from personal vehicles to public modes

of transport. Apart from modern buses,

information technology plays an important

role in smooth operation of the fleets.

ITS4Mobility is one such system, which

helps public transport with improved traffic

information to passengers and the traffic

planner. Intelligent Transport System gives

real-time information in the traffic network

facilitating smooth flow of traffic at all times.
