The vSphere Agent performs centralized virtualmachine backups without installing any softwarein the VMs running on a Host Server. The agentuses Changed Block Tracking (CBT), enabling afull and incremental backup regime. With CBT, anorganization can schedule frequent incrementalbackups (ex. every 15 minutes) so that withpoint-in-time recoveries, any virtual server data losswould be minimized to minutes rather than hoursor days.

C H A N G E D B L O C K T R A C K I N GCBT keeps track of the blocks of a virtual disk that have changed since a set point-in-time. The vSphere Agent uses this feature to perform an incrementalbackup of all the changed blocks of a virtual disk since the last backup. After each backup, CBT is reset to accurately track the next period of time’schanged blocks to be included in the next incremental backup. Using CBT technology, the vSphere Agent allows frequently scheduled VM backups(ex. every 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes). Setting up frequent incremental backups not only minimizes data loss, but also saves space with just changed blocksbeing backed up. Restoring from a point-in-time is a snap by simply selecting the incremental backup to begin the restore process – the vSphere Agentautomatically does all the work. For organizations that use VMware with CBT turned off, the vSphere Agent performs full VM backups.

N O N - W I N D O W S V M P R O T E C T I O NThe vSphere Agent can be used to back up any non-Windows VM (e.g. any flavor of Linux, etc.). Non-Windows VMs require a complete restore.

v M O T I O NBackups are not affected by vMotion, which can move VMs betwen host machines for load balancing during the backup process.

R E L I A B I L I T YThe vSphere Agent uses VMware’s vStorage APIs (VADP) as the base for its data protection solution. Guest VMs are backed up and restored in theirnative format. Native backups are more efficient, and recoveries faster, by eliminating the need for any conversions.

F A S T R E C O V E R YNo other framework is necessary. Native integration with UltraBac provides users with the ability to back up virtual machines without additional steps orsoftware. Full and incremental image backups and restores of VM’s hard disks are done directly to and from the datastore. Only one backup is required forimage and file-level recovery. In just a few minutes an entire VM can be restored, or an individual file can be recovered from any virtualized application.
