T oo much? Too little? There are many opinions about this important topic. We are working to find that perfect balance.

Sending a “phoneblast” is the most efficient way to reach the most people with emerging informa-tion about safety issues. We also would like to

convey more news about all the positive things that are happening at Samohi, but do not want to interrupt your family dinner every night with a recorded phone call. So, I am going to start sending emails about the good stuff.

Excellence!Samohi has so much to be proud of. One recent

fun-filled pep rally featured a segment from our student musical “South Pacific,” a collaboration among performing arts groups. Multiple students won regional awards and are now going on to represent Samohi at the statewide DECA market-ing competition. Congratulations also go to our academic team that took Second Place in the Science Bowl competition! Our highly competi-tive athletes continue to make the CIF playoffs and our dedicated, hard-working teachers and administrative team are keeping learning at the center of everything we do.

New College and Career Center

T hanks to amazing and collaborative work among Samohi, the District and your PTSA, a new College and Career Center

has opened in the Business Building, next door to the ROP office. This larger, more technologi-cally advanced location will be a place where all Samohi students can focus seriously on their future, regardless of their post-graduation choice.

The vision came from Principal Fretz, parents, and college counselors. The college counselors visited several other college centers at high schools and colleges to help fashion a state-of-the-art approach to counseling. There is now space for college admis-sions counselors to meet with students and for students to use new technology for research-ing colleges. This new center will modernize Samohi’s approach to the process of applying to college and make it easier for students and families to get the support they need.

This new center could not have been created without your PTSA Annual Giving Fund, which has donated $16,000 in funding. Parents and community members are asked to donate to this fund at registration and throughout the year to help with Samohi tutoring, classroom supplies and technology needs. Participation by all our parents in Annual Giving, at whatever levels they can give, truly makes a huge difference for our students. Construction and Traffic at Samohi

S amohi is ushering in its second century on Prospect Hill with construction of a new building and athletic fields! On

January 27, 2012, the baseball team took to the new Sealy Field for the first time, as Phase One has been completed! The field was laser leveled and repaired, sod installed, sprinkler system replaced, warning and driving tracks laid, discus cage moved and rebuilt, and trees trimmed. In Phase Two, restroom unit and bike racks will be installed.

Sundt Construction has mobilized via Measure BB and is on site to work on the New Science Technology Building. Sound walls and curtains have been installed. Great progress is being made on the first big jobs of demolition of the softball field and relocating the water main to the Technology Building. Evacuation assembly sites have been re-designated to shift as the areas under construction go down and get reopened.

Samohi is focused on safety during construc-tion. This construction project gives us the opportunity to revisit the impact that traffic patterns and entrances have on student and staff safety. Pico Boulevard is a major city thorough-fare where cars, buses, trucks, and bicycles are going downhill rapidly. Unsafe drop-off practices on Pico Boulevard have led to countless acci-dents and dangerous situations.

Working together with the City, changes in traffic patterns, entrances, and parking have begun. During construction, the City of Santa Monica has agreed to let visitors to the school park on Seventh Street. Samohi’s Main Entrance has moved to Michigan Avenue at Seventh Street, which is adjacent to this new visitor parking. Closing the Sixth and Pico entrance has allowed us to increase student safety by freeing up a security officer from monitoring the gate and

allows that person to roam the campus. We appreciate the partnership with the City and the Santa Monica Community. These safety and logistical changes will be challenging, but the opportunities for an increase in safety and money-saving measures will make the minor inconvenience worth our efforts!

State funding for our schools – a continual game of catch-up

C alifornia public schools have been cut by more than $20 billion in the last four years. Over the two year period of 2008

to 2010, the change in State funding (general purpose school funding) to SMMUSD was: -$7,833,913 or -$570/student. In January 2012, Governor Brown released his proposed budget for the 2012-13 school year, which would further reduce funding to SMMUSD by a minimum of $3 million!

However, lets not give up! We may have an opportunity to vote on providing new revenues to our schools. In late spring of this year, we will know if the November 2012 statewide ballot will include one or more tax measures aimed at providing additional revenues for schools. The measures are currently in the signature-gather-ing mode. The California State PTA is supporting the “Our Children, Our Future” Initiative which would restore education programs (and provide funding for preschools), by instituting a gradu-ated income tax. “Our Children, Our Future” would provide approximately $1,000/student in new revenue. Buy local: Support our schools!

E very time you shop in Santa Monica, you are directly helping our schools, including Samohi. When the voters of Santa Monica

passed Propositions Y and YY in late 2010, an innovative solution to revenue shortfalls became reality. This half cent “Transaction and Use Tax” went into effect last April, and in its first year, Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom projects that it will generate $14 million, $7 million of which will go to SMMUSD’s general fund. Without this additional revenue, SMMUSD would be facing devastating reductions to programs and teach-ers in our schools. The funding is being used to maintain class sizes at their current levels and preserve key components of the District’s music program. Even with this local resource shoring up SMMUSD’s budget, the recent state budget proposed by the Governor, if passed by

the Legislature, could further erode education funding statewide, resulting in $4 million in cuts for SMMUSD. So, please, for all of your shop-ping, BUY LOCAL! For every dollar of a taxable purchase, ¼ cent goes to our local schools.

Safe access to school

S amohi now has a Crossing Guard on 7th and Michigan! Thanks to requests by Samohi, the District and PTSA. In addition,

a “Safe Routes Task Force” has been formed to continue developing ideas for safe access to our school during construction.

Fire!We have amazing employees. They seriously

ran into a burning building to make sure all students were out safely. Thank you teachers, security, and administrators for keeping our kids safe!

ED FOUNDATION UPDATE

Every student. Every school. Every opportunity.

O ur community cares about making sure that every child has access to outstand-ing teachers in every discipline at every

school. The School Board has extended the role of SMMEF to partner with every school, family and business to raise the funds needed for personnel and professional development at every school in our district. While this new plan won’t be implemented until sometime between July 2013 and July 2014, we’re partici-pating in public meetings to help shape our expanded role. Looking ahead, our annual fund, “The Dollar a Day Campaign,” supports Academic, Arts, and Athletic programs in our schools. This Campaign asks for a contribution of $365 per child per year. With this donation, we can raise over $4 million to support every student with the excellent programs they deserve, so please give generously.

Concert is scheduled for April 21. Students from our SMMUSD choirs and orchestras will be performing with professional musi-cal guests (TBA), for another unforgettable evening of music to benefit arts education in our schools. Stay tuned for details!

Rising to the playoff challenge

S anta Monica High Vikings continue a fantastic sports year, with all teams advancing to CIF Playoffs, or sending

athletics/Boys Basketball: Coach Hecht’s Ocean

League Champions, led by Trey Thomson, Jordan Mathews, and Trevis Jackson. Samohi competes in the highest division (Division 1AA), and has a lofty #6 ranking.

Coach Verdugo took our Girls Basketball team to the playoffs. Lady Vikings are led by Aneise Palmore, Paige Onoyue, and Cristina Rimicci.

The Boys Soccer team and Coach Rodriguez completed their season with an Ocean League title (1st in League) and enters CIF Playoffs as the #6 ranked team in Division IV. Leading the team is defender Marco Tejada, midfield-ers Manny Serrano and Jesus Martinez, and goalkeeper Aziz Yehia. Don’t expect much scor-ing from the opposition; Samohi’s defense is fantastic!

Coach Chapman took our Lady Kickers in as the 3rd place representative from the Ocean League. Players Kristen Vasquez and Lidia Battaglia have proven to be key to our success this season.

In Girls Water Polo, Coach Flanders’ team took its #2 Ocean League standing to CIF playoffs led by goalie Marina Kraus and co-captains Felle Baumgarten and Aleya Spielman. Go Lady Greenies!

Our Boys Wrestling team sent 6 (+3 alternates) to Individuals. Coach Black was on double duty with one Girl Wrestler! Jessica Walker qualified for State by matching last year’s regional success with a dramatic last minute victory, finishing #2 in the state! Go Viking grap-plers!

Sarah Krenik and Blossom Sato both received All CIF Team Honors for their efforts in leading our Girls Volleyball team to a league title and playoff run!

EYES & EARS: THE ARTS AT SAMOHI

Ah, spring! Singing, symphony, semi-finals and South Pacific

TheatreFrom March 1–10, Barnum Hall saw seven stel-

lar showings of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific—a wonderful collaboration between our major performing arts groups. The Theatre, Choir, Orchestra, and Dance departments worked tire-lessly for months to recreate this powerful and delightful Broadway smash.

Coming up: another collaborative show, Public Domain Production. This student-run collage of performances will feature theatrical monologues, one-acts, poetry, music and great coffee! Come see it Friday, June 1, at 8pm and Saturday, June 2, at 5 pm and 8pm.

ChoirOur top choral ensembles combine forces with

Samohi instrumental students to present the annual Masterworks Concert. This year, the Madri-gal Ensemble, Chamber Singers and Chorale will team with students from our amazing orchestra and band programs plus professional soloists on the Barnum Stage to present Maurice Durufle’s Requiem. March 16 at 7 pm.

In May, Cathedral Classics offer an up-close-and-personal musical experience in the foyer of Barnum Hall with its wonderful, reverberant acoustics. The setting is very intimate and seating is limited; reserve your space early! May 1, at 6 pm and 8 pm..

BandSamohi trumpet player Eli Brown, a junior, is a

2012 Spotlight Awards Semi-Finalist in both the Jazz Instrumental Music and Classical Instrumen-tal Music categories. He has also been named Prin-cipal Trumpet in the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association’s (SCSBOA) Honor Orchestra and the California Orchestra Directors Association’s (CODA) All-State Honor Orchestra.

Kyle McCreight, a sophomore, has been chosen to play Lead Trombone in the California All State Jazz Band this year.

Congratulations to all of our Outstanding Band members who were included in the SCSBOA, CBDA or CODA honor groups this year — too many to list individually!! Bravo!

March and April are jam-packed with Band events with Stairway of the Stars on March 22 and 23, the SCSBOA Festival on March 28 and 29 at Barnum Hall and an All-Star Concert set for the evening of Wednesday, March 28. The Samohi Jazz Band will be off to Reno, Nevada, for the Western States Jazz Festival on April 27. On April 28, Samohi Bands will bring silent film star Harold Lloyd and the pipe organ together for a fun evening of Music and The Movies!

OrchestraThe Samohi Orchestras have several notable

events coming up, beginning with the Spring Concert, on March 13, 7pm at Barnum Hall.

The Samohi Symphony Orchestra will be tour-ing in Washington D.C. over Spring Break, April 9–15, including a performance on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, and workshops with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Peabody School of Music

When they return, join us for the crowd-pleas-ing Pops Concert on May 22, 7pm at Barnum Hall.

On April 1, the Samohi Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras are hosting an Exchange Concert day with orchestras from Saratoga High School (No. Calif.) and the Carmel High School (Indiana).

Five students—Luke Bencivengo (Percussion), Yekun Ding (Bass), Jonathan Forsander (Tuba), Mayu Isom (Oboe), and Justin Sardo (Bassoon) —were chosen to participate in the American String Teachers Association’s National High School Orchestra, another ten were selected for the California All-State Orchestra, and 24 Samohi musicians participated in the California Orchestra Directors Association Honor Orchestra,

W e encourage all incoming 10th, 11th and 12th grade students to consider ROP classes (Regional Occupational

Program)! Students often experience the impor-tant “Aha!” as they apply core academic content to real life applications through ROP. In addition to several of the courses being approved by UC/CSU to meet the A-G admission requirements, ROP courses provide student leadership oppor-tunities, internships, and hands-on business planning, Students have opportunities to “test”

T he new year and the second semester provides new opportunities to do better in all aspects of our lives. This is the perfect

time to make positive changes and it all begins with your attitude. This is your semester to work harder, put in a little more time to prepar-ing for your exams. Everything you do makes a difference. The key is never quitting. Teach-ers, advisors, administrators and friends have techniques and strategies that might help. No one is successful on their own. If you need help, just ask!

Teachers are refining the Focused Learning Targets (FLT’s) for their students, giving them precisely what they need to know, and be able to do, to gain mastery of the material, as well as practicing improved questioning techniques to engage more students at a higher cognitive level.

You can help by looking for opportunities to engage in a dialogue about the skills and concepts being taught in your student’s units of study. All people feel more pride in their accom-plishments when others show interest.

H opefully, you and your student(s) have been communicating with regards to grades throughout the first six weeks

and there are no surprises. Our goal is to do everything in our power to support our students’ learning. As we move into the last 12 weeks of this semester, I encourage all parents to talk with their students about individual classes; students still have time to raise those low grades. Please do not hesitate to call or email a specific teacher if you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s progress.

The second annual M House Senior Farewell Dinner will be held on Friday, June 1 at 6pm. All M House seniors and their parents will be invited to this event. A separate letter and invitation was mailed home last week. A special part of the evening will be the viewing of each student’s baby and senior picture. Pictures will be returned immediately following the dinner. While our M House seniors do not need to pay for their dinners, we are requesting a volun-tary donation of $10 for each additional family member that attends. Please feel free to donate more if possible to help defray the cost of the event.

T he new semester has started and June will be here before we know it. This is a perfect time to focus on the future as seniors look

to graduation and students in other grades look forward to being one year older. Please keep up with grades on Illuminate and communicate with teachers as necessary to help your child attain success. The four year planning meetings have been scheduled and are in progress for our 9th and 10th grade students. Please contact your child’s advisor if you did not receive an appoint-ment postcard. Juniors will begin their schedul-ing in early to mid March.

A s we get more familiar with the Illuminate system, we’re having great conversa-tions about student achievement. Those

conversations can’t happen, unless we all check grades online and contact teachers for help. This is the “meaty” time of the semester. Teachers are expecting more and doing power teaching before we go into Spring Break and testing. This isn’t the time to let up!

As you make plans for spring break, have you considered doing a family community service project? I typically suggest that you read together (and I still suggest that!), but working together to make life better for someone else can sometimes help students recognize the benefits they have, including their educational opportunities!

The House Advisory is busy planning our Spring Fling for March after a very successful Holiday luncheon that kicked off our Holiday Break. Thank you for all your help, support, and participation. A group of seniors are helping to plan the first annual I House Senior dinner for the end of the year.. T he Nurse’s Office has been seeing the flu-like illnesses, with fevers and body aches, as well as coughs and colds. Please help

keep the school healthy. If your teen has a cold, but no fever, they are okay to be in school. If they have any fever of over 100 degrees, they should not come to school, regardless of the demands of their classes. A fever is a sign of an illness that is likely contagious. They will not learn as well while ill and they may pass along the illness to others. They should be fever-free without the use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen for 24 hours before returning to school. If your teen has a major illness or injury out of school, it is always good if our office is aware. We are an integral part of the team that makes sure your teen has a smooth transition back to school. Students who sustain concussions should be cleared by a doctor before returning to PE or athletics. Our athletic trainer follows student athletes closely after concussions but we also need to be aware of students in regular PE. C ongratulations to Samohi students Alison Guh (Junior, O House) and Hanna Biabani (Freshman, I House) for their terrific

Reflections entries, which have advanced to the state level of competition. Alison’s paint-ing, “Together as One”, and Hanna’s poem, “We are the Sun” will be representing not only the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District but the entire 33rd PTSA District (most of Los Angeles County). Samohi’s 18 Reflections entries were exhibited in the main hallway outside the Roberts Art Gallery in February. Well done!

Nuevo Centro de Universidad y Carrera

G racias al increíble y colaborativo trabajo entre Samohi, el Distrito y su PTSA, se abrió un nuevo Centro de Universidad y Carrera en

el Edificio de Negocios, al lado de la oficina de ROP. Es más grande, y sitio con más avance tecnológico será un sitio donde todos los estudiantes de Samohi puedan enfocarse seriamente en su futuro, sin importar lo que han escogido hacer después de graduación.

La visión vino de la Directora Fretz, padres, y consejeros de la univer-sidad. Los consejeros de la universidad visitaron otros centros en preparatorias y universida-des para ayudar a diseñar una consejería en la vanguardia. Hay espacio para que los consejeros de admisión a la universidad se puedan reunir con los estudiantes y para que los estudiantes puedan usar la nueva tecnología para hacer encuesta sobre la universidad. Este nuevo centro modernizará cómo Samohi hace el proceso de solicitar a la universidad y lo será más fácil para los estudiantes y sus familias de recibir el apoyo que necesitan

Este nuevo centro no se hubiera hecho sin los Fondos de Donación anual de la PTSA, la cual contri-buyó $16,000 en fondos. Fondos del Estado para Nuestras Escuelas – un juego continuo de ponerse al día

L as escuelas públicas de California han recibido cortes de más de $20 billones en los últimos cuatro años. En el periodo de dos años del

2008 al 2010, el cambio en los fondos del estado (fundos de la escuela de propósito general) a SMMUSD fue: -$7,833,913 o -$570/estudiante. En enero 2012, el Gobernador Brown publicó su propuesto presupuesto para el año escolar 2012-13, el cual reducirá aun más los fondos de SMMUSD por lo menos $3 millones!

¡Pero no nos demos por vencidos! Tenemos la oportunidad de proveer nuevos ingresos a nuestras escuelas. Al final de la primavera de este año, sabremos si las elecciones de noviem-bre 2012 de todo el estado incluirán una o más medidas de impuestos con el propósito de proveer ingresos adicionales a las escuelas. Las medidas actualmente están en la etapa de colec-ción de firmas. La PTA del Estado de California apoya la iniciativa “Nuestros Niños, Nuestro Futuro” la cual restaurará programas educacio-nales (y proveerá fondos para las preescolares), instituyendo un impuesto a los ingresos gradual. “Nuestros Niños, Nuestro Futuro” proveerá aproximadamente $1,000/estudiante en ingresos. Construcción y Tráfico en Samohi

S amohi se está preparando para su segundo siglo en Prospect Hill con la construcción de un nuevo edificio y campo de deporte! El 27

de enero, 2012, el equipo de béisbol usó el campo Dealy por primera vez, ya que la Fase I se ha completado. El campo deportivo fue razado con laser y reparado, se instaló nuevo césped y sistema de regadero, se construyeron pistas de advertencia y para conducir, las jaulas fueron trasladadas y reparadas, y se podaron los arboles. En la Fase II, se instalará baños y estándares de bicicletas.

La compañía de construcción Sundt ha movili-zado a través de la Medida BB y está en la escuela para trabajar en el nuevo Edificio de Ciencia y Tecnología. Paredes de sonido y cortinas han sido instaladas. Se ha hecho gran progreso en los primeros trabajo de demolición en el campo de softbol y el traslado del conducto de agua principal al Edificio de Tecnología. Se ha re-designado nueva área de asamblea para evacuación para cambiarla del sitio en construcción.

Samohi se enfoca en la seguridad durante la construcción. Este proyecto de construcción nos ofrece la oportunidad de revisitar el impacto que tiene el tráfico y las entradas en la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal. La avenida Pico es una de las vías principales de la ciudad donde los carros, autobuses, camiones y bicicletas van cuesta abajo rápidamente. Prácticas inseguras de recoger y dejar al estudiante han dado lugar a innumera-bles accidentes y situaciones peligrosas.

Trabajando seguros con la ciudad, cambios en los patrones de tráfico, entradas, y estacionamiento ya han comenzado. Durante la construcción, la ciudad de Santa Mónica se puso de acuerdo en dejar que los visitantes a la escuela se estacionen en la Calle Siete. La entrada principal de Samohi se ha trasladado a la Avenida Michigan y la Calle Siete, la cual está al lado del nuevo estacionamiento para visitantes. El cerrar la entrada de la Calle Seis y Pico nos ha permitido aumentar la seguridad de los estudiantes permitiendo que un oficial de segu-ridad, el cual supervisaba dicha entrada, supervise en toda la escuela. Nosotros apreciamos la asocia-ción con la ciudad y la comunidad de Santa Mónica.

Estos cambios de seguridad y de logística será un reto, pero las oportunidades para aumentar la seguridad y las medidas de ahorro de dinero hará que la pequeña inconveniencia valer la pena!

Cuando los votantes de Santa Mónica pasa-ron la Propuesta Y e YY al fin de 2010, se hizo realidad una innovadora solución a el déficit en los ingresos. Este “Impuesto de Transacción y Uso” por medio centavo se hizo efecto el pasado abril, y en el primer año, el Alcalde de Santa Mónica Richard Bloom proyecta que generará $14 millones, $7 millones va al fondo general de SMMUSD. Sin estos fondos adicionales, SMMUSD estaría enfrentando reducciones devastadoras a programas y maestros. Los fondos son usados para mantener el tamaño de clase al nivel actual y preservar partes claves del programa de música en el Distrito. Aun Así agregando estos

recursos locales al presupuesto de SMMUSD, el presupuesto propuesto por el Gobernador, si pasa por la legislatura, puede erradicar aun más los fondos estatales de educación, resultando en cortes de $4 millones en SMMUSD. Así que, por favor haga toda su compra aquí, ¡COMPRE LOCAL! Por cada dólar de compra con impuesto, un ¼ de centavo va nuestras escuelas locales.

N uestra comunidad se preocupa por garanti-zar que cada niño tenga acceso a los mejores maestros en cada disciplina en cada escuela.

La Junta Escolar ha ampliado el papel de SMMEF de colaborar con cada escuela, familia y negocio para recaudar los fondos necesarios para el personal y el desarrollo profesional en cada escuela en nuestro distrito. Aunque este nuevo plan no se llevará a cabo hasta algún tiempo entre julio 2013 y julio 2014, estamos participando en las reuniones públicas para ayudar a dar forma a nuestro Nuevo amplificado papel. Mirando al futuro, nuestro fondo anual, “La Campaña de un Dolar al Día”, apoyos académicos, artes, y los programas deportivos en nuestras escuelas. Entrenador Verdugo llevo a nuestro equipo de Baloncesto de las Hembras los desempates. Las Damas Vikings encabezada por Aneise Palmore, Paige Onoyue, y Cristina Rimicci.

El entrenador Rodriguez Fútbol (Soccer) de Barones completó la temporada con un titulo en la Liga Océano (1º en Liga) y entran los desempates con categoría #6 en la División IV. Encabezando el equipo está el defensor Marco Tejada, el centro-campista Manny Serrano y Jesús Martínez, y el portero Aziz Yehia. No espere que la oposición anote puntos; ¡Samohi tiene una defensa fantástica!

El entrenador Chapman llevó a Lady Kickers al 3er lugar de representante para la Liga Océano. Las jugadoras Kristen Vasquez y Lidia Battaglia proba-ron ser clave en el triunfo de la temporada.

En el Polo Acuático Hembras , El equipo del entrenador Flanders tomó el 2do lugar en Liga Océano para los desempates de CIF encabezado la portera Marina Kraus y co-capitanes Felle Baum-garten y Aleya Spielman. ¡Vivan las Lady Greenies!

Nuestro equipo de Lucha de Barones envió 6 (+3 alterantes) a Individuales. El entrenador Black tuvo doble responsabilidad con Lucha de Hembras-Jessica Walker calificó para el Estado alcanzando el triunfo regional del año pasado con una victoria dramática a último momento, terminando en 2º lugar en el estado. ¡Vivan los Viking!

Sarah Krenik y Blossom Sato ambos recibieron Honores de Todo el Equipo CIF por sus esfuerzos en llevar al equipo del Baloncesto de las Hembras a títulos de la liga y los juegos de desempates!

¡Ah, primavera! Cantando, sinfonía, semifinales y la obra South Pacific

TeatroDel 1-10 de marzo, Barnum Hall 7 obras este-

lares de Rodgers & Hammerstein South Pacific (Pacifico Sur)—una maravillosa colaboración entre los grupos principales de las artes escénicas. Los departamentos de teatro, coro, orquestra y danza trabajaron incansablemente por meses para recrear esta tremenda y agradable obra de Broad-way de éxito.

Pronto viene: otra obra de colaboración, Public Domain Production (Producción Dominio Público). Esta función por estudiantes es un encolado que presenta monólogos teatrales, obra de un acto, poemas, música, y ¡buen café! Venga el viernes, 1 de junio a las 8pm el sábado, 2 de junio, a las 5 pm y a las 8pm.

CoroNuestro mejor conjunto coral combina fuerzas

con los estudiantes de música instrumental de Samohi para presentar el concierto anual Masterworks Concert (Concierto de Obras Maes-tras). Este año, el Conjunto Madrigal, Cantante de Camera, y Coral se juntaran con estudiantes de nuestros increíbles programas de orquestra y además solistas profesionales en el escenario Barnum para presentar el Requiem de Maurice Durufle. El 16 de marzo a las 7 pm.

En mayo, Cathedral Classics ofrece una expe-riencia musical muy personal en el vestíbulo de la sala Barnum Hall con su maravillosa y reverberante acústica. Este ambiente es muy íntimo y los asien-tos están limitados; ¡reserve su espacio temprano! 1º de mayo a las 6 pm y 8 pm..

BandaEl trompetista Eli Brown de Samohi, a junior,

es un semifinalista del los premios Spotlight en el 2012 en ambas categoría, la Música Instrumental de Jazz y Música Instrumental Clásica. También fue nombrado Trompetista Principal en la Asociación de Bandas & Orquestra de Escuelas California (SCSBOA) Orquestra de Honor y la Asociación de Directores de Orquestra de California (CODA) Orquestra de Honor en Todo el Estado.

Kyle McCreight, estudiante en el 10º, fue esco-gido para tocar como Primer Trombón en la Banda de Jazz de Todo el Estado de California este año.

La Banda de Jazz de Samohi se va Reno, Nevada, para el Festival de los Estados del Oriente el 27 de abril. OrquestraLas Orquestra de Samohi tienen varios notables

La Orquestra Sinfónica tendrá su excursión en Washington D.C. durante las vacaciones de prima-vera, del 9–15 de abril, incluyendo una función en la Sala Milenio en el Centro Kennedy, y talleres con la Orquestra Sinfónica de Baltimore y la Escuela de Música Peabody.

Cuando regresen, vengan a oir el favorito del público Concierto Pops el 22 de mayo a las 7pm en Barnum Hall.

El 1 de abril, las Orquestras filarmónica y la Sinfónica serán anfitrionas del Día de Intercambio de Concierto con orquestra de la Preparatoria Saratoga High School (Norte de California) y la Preparatoria Carmel (Indiana).

Cinco estudiantes—Luke Bencivengo (Percu-sión), Yekun Ding (Bajo), Jonathan Forsander (Tuba), Mayu Isom (Oboe), y Justin Sardo (Bassoon) –fueron escogidos para participar en la Orquestra Nacional de Preparatorias de la Asocia-ción de Maestros de Cuerdas, otros diez fueron seleccionados para la Orquestra de Todo el Estado de California, y 24 músicos de Samohi participa-ron en la Orquestra de Honor de los Directores de Orquestra de California.

próxima boda o cena? Considere la Orquestra de Cámara de Samohi. Glenn Frey (famoso del grupo Eagles) recientemente los oyó tocar en un evento, y los empleó para una grabación y video de promoción. ROP les da a los estudiantes ese momento importante de “¡Aja!”

A nimamos a todos los estudiantes que entra-nal 10º, 11º y 12º grado a que consideren tomar una clase de ROP (Programa Regional

Ocupacional)! Los estudiantes frecuentemente tienen ese momento importante de “¡Aja!” cuando aplican el contenido académico a la vida real a través de ROP. Además de varias clases aprobadas por UC/CSU para reunir el requisito de admisión A-G, los cursos de ROP le dan a los estudiantes oportunidades de liderazgo, internados, y prácticas en la planificación de negocios. Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de probar carrera y espe-

cialidades para la universidad antes de hacer las decisiones importantes en el 12º grado. Clases de Danza Profesional, Película & Video, Tecnología de Auto, Mercadería & Negocios y Teatro Técnico solamente son algunos de los muchos que pueden escoger. NOTICIAS DE LA ENFERMERA

Por favor no venga a la escuela enfermo

L a Enfermería ha notado la gripe, con fiebre y dolores en el cuerpo, al igual que tos y refria-dos. Por favor mantenga la escuela saludable.

Si su adolescente está refriado, pero no tiene fiebre, pueden venir a la escuela. Si tienen fiebre de más de 100 grados, no deben de venir a la escuela, sin preocuparse de las demandas en sus clases. La fiebre indica enfermedad y pueden pasarla a los demás. Ellos deben de estar libre de fiebre sin la ayuda de medicamentos ibuprofeno o acetamino-phen por 24 horas antes de regresar a la escuela. Si su adolescente tiene una enfermedad grande o se ha lesionado fuera de la escuela, sería bueno que la oficina este consiente de eso. Nosotros somos parte del equipo que se asegura que su adolescente tenga una buena transición de regreso a la escuela. Los estudiantes que sufren una concusión deben de ver a un medico antes de regresar a educa-ción física o deportes. Nuestros entrenadores de deportes supervisan atentamente a los estudiantes que han sufrido una concusión pero también es importante que se les informe a la clase regular de educación física. M El año nuevo y el segundo semestre ofre-cen nuevas oportunidades para mejorar en todo aspecto de nuestras vidas. Este es

el perfecto tiempo para hacer cambios positivos y todo comienza con nuestra actitud. Este es su semestre para trabajar más duro y poner más tiempo en prepararse para los exámenes. Todo lo que haga hace una diferencia. La clave es no darse por vencido. Los maestros, consejeros, administra-dores y amigos tienen técnicas que pueden ayudar. Nadie triunfa solo. ¡Si necesita ayuda simplemente pídala!

Los maestros están perfeccionando las Metas de Aprendizaje Enfocado (FLT) para sus estudiantes, dándole precisamente lo que necesitan saber, y poderlo hacer, para obtener maestría del material, al igual que practicar mejores técnicas de interro-gar para interesar a más estudiante a un nivel más alto cognitivo.

Puede ayudar buscando por oportunidades para tener conversaciones sobre las destrezas y conceptos que el estudiante está estudiando. Todo el mundo se siente orgulloso de sus logros cuando otras personas suenan interesados.

Mien-tras que nuestros estudiantes de la Casa de M no tienen que pagar por sus comidas, le estamos pidiendo una donación voluntaria de $ 10 por cada miembro adicional de la familia que asiste. Por favor manténganse al día con las calificaciones en Illuminate y comuníquese con sus maestros como sea necesario para ayudar a su hijo a obtener éxito. Las reuniones del plan de cuatro años ya están en progreso para nues-tros estudiantes en el 9º y 10º grados. Por favor contacte al consejero de su niño si no ha recibido una tarjeta postal. Los estudiantes en el grado 11 comenzarán haciendo su horario del principio a mediado de marzo.

M ientras nos familiarizamos más con el sistema Illuminate, estamos teniendo buenas conversaciones sobre el rendi-

Mientras hace planes para las vacaciones de la primavera, ¿ha considerado hacer un proyecto de familia de servicio a la comunidad? Generalmente sugiero que lean juntos (y todavía lo sugiero), pero el trabajar juntos para hacer la vida mejor a alguien también a veces le ayuda al estudiante a reconocer los beneficios que tienen, incluyendo sus oportu-nidades educacionales. Grad Nite 2012 — “Jamaica Me Crazy!”

S amohi’s fabled Grad Nite will transform our tennis courts into a cruise ship to Jamaica. We need your help to make this happen!

Prizes: Over 700 prizes are needed for the prize booth! Anything a graduating senior might enjoy or need would be greatly appreciated!

Construction and Set Decorating: Saturday, May 26 from 9 to 4 we move sets across campus to the tennis courts — we need your help! Construction and refurbishing will begin on Sunday, May 27 and continue on the first two weekends in June. No artistic or construction experience necessary, volunteers will guide you through the work. See information online as we get closer to the event.

Event Night Volunteer: We have two-hour shifts beginning at 9:30 p.m on June 14, and ending at 5:30 a.m. Senior parents will receive instruc-tions at the end of March,. The online volunteer sign up will be available after we return from Spring Break (mid-April). We encourage parents of all students (not only seniors) to sign up. It is a fun event!
