The Fifth Sunday of Epiphany

WELCOME SONG OF PREPARATION Jesus, Cast a Look on Me

Jesus, cast a look on me, give me sweet simplicity, make me poor and keep me low, seeking only thee to know.

All that feeds my busy pride, cast it evermore aside. Bid my will to thine submit, lay me humbly at thy feet.

Make me like a little child, of my strength and wisdom spoiled, seeing only in thy light, walking only in thy might.

Leaning on thy loving breast, where a weary soul can rest, feeling well the peace of God, flowing from his precious blood.

In this posture let me live, and hosannas daily give. In this temper let me die, and hosannas ever cry! CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord, to him who rides across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens, who thunders with his mighty voice. Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the heavens. All: You, O God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God! PRAYER OF INVOCATION

SONGS OF PRAISE Crown Him with Many Crowns

Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; hark, how the heav'nly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul and sing of him, who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity.

Crown him the Lord of love, behold his hands and side; rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bends his wond’ring eye at mysteries so bright.

Crown him the Lord of peace, whose pow’r a scepter sways from pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise. His reign shall know no end and round his pierced feet fair flow’rs of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet.

Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time; Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For thou has died for me; thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity.

How Great is Our God

The splendor of the King, clothed in majesty; let all the earth rejoice, let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide; and trembles at his voice, trembles at his voice.

How great is our God. Sing with me how great is our God; and all will see how great, how great is our God.

And age to age he stands and time is in his hands; beginning and the end, beginning and the end. The Godhead, three in one - Father, Spirit, Son; the Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb.

You’re the name above all names, worthy of all praise. My heart will sing how great is our God.

COMMUNION The King of Love My Shepherd Is

The King of love my Shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight; thy strength’ning grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth.

And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house forever.

On Jordan’s Stormy Banks

On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye to Canaan’s fair and happy land, where my possessions lie.

All o’er those wide extended plains, shines one eternal day; there God the Son forever reigns, and scatters night away.

I am bound (I am bound),I am bound (I am bound), I am bound for the promised land.

No chilling winds nor poisonous breath can reach that healthful shore; sickness, sorrow, pain and death, are felt and feared no more.

When shall I reach that happy place and be forever blessed? When shall I see my Father’s face and in his bosom rest? BENEDICTION

CONFESSION OF SIN

Leader: The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. All: No creature is hidden from his sight. We are all fully visible, utterly exposed to the eyes of the One to whom we must give account.

Silent Confession of Sins

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Therefore, family, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, All: let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. SONG OF ASSURANCE Marvelous Grace

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt! Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, there where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within; grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin.

Sin and despair like the sea waves cold, threaten the soul with infinite loss; grace that is greater, yes, grace untold, points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide. What can avail to wash it away? Look! There is flowing a crimson tide, whiter than snow you may be today. 3 6

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 68:4-8, 17-18

4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is Yahweh; exult before him! 5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. 6 God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. 7 O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, Selah 8 the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. 17 The chariots of God are twice ten thousand, thousands upon thousands; the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary. 18 You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that Yah - God may dwell there.

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Ephesians 4:4-6, 7-13

4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8 Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”

9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Leader: Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths. All: Give us life, O LORD, according to your Word.
