But hold onto your trimmers — NOT QUITE YET. Trimming your Oaks is best done in the hottest and coldest times of the year. That means late July and August for the heat, January and February for the cold.

Oak Wilt has continued to spread in Westcreek, and we need to be cognizant on how to save our trees, which is part of why our neighborhood

is so desirable (see related Letter from a concerned resident on Oak Wilt spreading in Westcreek).

On the left, there is a photo of leaves with “Veinal necrosis” (Oak Wilt). This article is about the PREVENTION of Oak Wilt, and really how easy that

can be. Don’t trim quite yet, and when you do in late July or August (or in the Winter months) make sure whatever tree

trimming company you hire is using preventative steps against Oak Wilt.

Here are some tips on trimming to prevent Oak Wilt:1) DO NOT TRIM OAK TREES DURING “Leaf Exchange” (when

they drop their leaves—in the springtime). Trim in late December or the month of January and late July and the month of August.

2) Make sure that the tree trimmers you hire are THOROUGHLY disinfecting their cutting tools between EACH & EVERY tree that they trim. Do not let them go from one tree to the next without disinfecting tools completely.

3) Make sure that they are IMMEDIATELY SEALING EACH CUT AS THEY CUT IT on the oak tree they are trimming, including sucker cuts.

4) Watch for color changes if you have Red Oaks. If they look like they are “turning” (like Fall leaves) during the summer, you might have a problem. Call a Certified Arborist immediately.

5) Hire a reputable tree trimming company.6) WATCH the trimmers as they are doing the work.

I.am.writing.this.letter.to.keep.Westcreek.residents.updated.about.the.Oak.Wilt.that.has.been.spreading.down.Morning.Dew.Drive...

In.the.spring.of.2007,.while.walking.my.daughter.to.school,.I.noticed.that.an.Oak.on.the.6200.block.of.Morning.Dew.was.not.looking.well..In.the.spring.of.2008,.it.was.obvious.that.the.tree.had.been.infected.with.Oak.Wilt.and.was.dead..

At.that.time.some.of.us.on.Morning.Dew.decided.to.treat.our.Oaks..Three.different.homes.on.the.6300.block.of.Morning.Dew.treated.their.trees.for.Oak.Wilt..One.chose.not.to.treat.the.tree.in.their.backyard,.and.it.is.now.dead..All.of.the.treated.trees.were.done.in.the.Spring.2008.within.a.day.or.two.of.each.other..Of.the.total.of.22.trees.treated,.12.are.dead..Nine.of.them.are.surviving.but.will.never.be.quite.the.same..Only.one.is.doing.well,.and.we.will.not.know.until.this.fall.or.next.spring.for.sure.how.that.one.will.fare..Obviously,.we.want.all.of.our.neighbors.who.live.on.Summerset.and.Sun.Vista.to.be.on.the.lookout.for.any.signs.of.Oak.Wilt.on.their.Oaks..

The.Oak.Wilt.affects.three.types.of.Oaks:.Live.Oak,.White.Oak.and.Red.Oak..Trim.your.trees.only.in.July./.August.(during.the.hottest.days.of.summer).or.in.Dec./.Jan..(during.the.coldest.days.of.winter)..Be.sure.to.seal.the.wounds.after.trimming.and.always.keep.equipment.clean...Even.if.all.trimming.precautions.are.taken,.be.aware.that.the.older.trees.are.commonly.grafted.together.at.the.roots.and.the.disease.spreads.just.as.easily.thru.the.root.systems.(regardless.if.trimmed.or.not).

Update On Hill forest Zoning

Chris.Schexnayder.and.Gary.Bunevick.met.with.Council.Staff.(5/13).the. day. before. Council. meeting. on. 4/14. to. discuss. the.Council’s.resolution.to.return.Hill.Forest.back.to.low.density.on.the.Flum..Council.aids.for.Martinez,.Shade.and.Cole.attended..Chris.and.Gary.discussed.the.WNA’s.willingness.to.bargain.in.good.faith.for.a.reasonable.development,.but.not.at.the.expense.of.the.quality.of.life.in.Westcreek..Low.density.SF-3.still.leaves.all.options.on.the.table.(unfortunately).and.the.WNA.is.for.the.council’s.resolution.and.amendment.for.that.

Chris.followed.up.with.an.e-mail.to.Staff.and.Council.members.re-stating.our.position.of.support.for.low.density.

At.the.Council.meeting,.Mickey.Bentley.asked.for.a.postponement.due.to.medical.reasons,.and.the.hearing.was.rescheduled.for.July.23.

The.WNA.is.petitioning.council.and.staff.to.put.it.on.the.June.agenda.instead.of.the.July.date.
