Part 2: ADORATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

The cross is unveiled in the sanctuary in three stages. At each stage the holy cross is raised high and the invitation is sung. Each time the cross is raised and the invitation is sung, we sing the response to the invitation, we kneel, and we give honor to the cross in silent prayer. STAND Deacon/Priest:

KNEEL Adoration of the Holy Cross We come forward in spirit to give honor to the wood of the Cross. You may do this virtually as you view the Cross on screen, or you may venerate the wood of a Cross in your home, in union with the whole parish and universal Church. Antiphon and Reproaches Cantor sings verses. Cantor, then ALL: We adore your Cross, O Lord, we praise and glorify your holy Resurrection, for behold, because of the wood of a tree joy has come to the whole world. ALL: Antiphon 1:

Part 3: HOLY COMMUNION The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

An Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Ligouri My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayer after Communion Priest: Almighty ever-living God, who have restored us to life by the blessed Death and Resurrection

of your Christ, preserve in us the work of your mercy, that, by partaking of this mystery we may have life unceasingly devoted to you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer over the People:

May abundant blessing, O Lord, we pray, descend upon your people, who have honored the Death of your Son in the hope of their resurrection: may pardon come, comfort be given, holy faith increase, and everlasting redemption be made secure. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Because the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion is part of the three-day-long liturgy of the Paschal Triduum, there is no final dismissal.

INTRODUCTION AND MEDITATIONS FROM THE DIARY Reader (1): Saint Faustina Kowalska was a Polish nun and mystic in the early 1900s. Throughout her life,

she had many visions of and conversations with Jesus. In 1935, she received a vision of an angel sent by God to chastise a particular city. She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly, she saw the Holy Trinity and felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the same time, she found herself pleading with God for mercy with the following words which she heard interiorly:

(Reader 2:) “Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Your

dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” (476)

Reader (1): As she continued saying this inspired prayer, the angel became helpless and could not carry

out the deserved punishment on the city. The next day, as she was entering the chapel, she again heard this interior voice, instructing

her how to recite the prayer that our Lord later called “the Chaplet.” From then on, she recited this form of prayer almost constantly, offering it especially for the dying.

In subsequent revelations, the Lord made it clear that the Chaplet was not just for her, but for

the whole world. He also attached extraordinary promises to its recitation. God told Saint Faustina:

(Reader 2:) Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given to you… Whoever will

recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death… When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. When this chaplet is said by the bedside of a dying person, Divine Wrath is appeased, unfathomable mercy envelopes the soul, and the very depths of My tender mercy will be moved for the sake of the sorrowful Passion of My Son. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those who trust in my mercy. Through the chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will.”

Reader (1): The Divine Mercy Chaplet is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist,

so it is especially appropriate to use it after having received Holy Communion. It may be said at any time, but our Lord specifically told Saint Faustina to recite it as a novena prayer. On Good Friday, 1937, Jesus requested that Saint Faustina make a special novena before the Feast of Divine Mercy, from Good Friday through the following Saturday. He, Himself, dictated the intentions for each day. By means of a specific prayer she was to bring to His Heart a different group of souls each day and thus immerse them in the ocean of His mercy, begging the Father – on the strength of Jesus’ Passion – for graces for them.

Since Saint Faustina was commanded to write down the novena, Our Lord must have

intended the novena to be used by others, too. Once published, it immediately became very

Page 12: WA April 9 GOOD FRIDAY 2020 · that, leading our life in tranquility and quiet, we may glorify God the Father almighty. Let us kneel. (silent prayer) Let us stand. Priest: Almighty

12

popular, and people prayed the novena, not only in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday, but at other times as well. The wide range of intentions, which do not include personal needs, makes the great popularity of this novena all the more effective. In this novena, we truly make the Lord’s intentions our own – a beautiful expression of the Church’s privilege and duty, as Bride of the Lord, to be the intercessor at Christ’s side on the throne of mercy.

Our Lord said to Saint Faustina, (Reader 2:) “By this Novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls.”

SILENT REFLECTION MUSICAL REFLECTION: Crux Fidelis (Faithful Cross)

Faithful Cross, O tree all beauteous: Tree all peerless and divine. Not a grove on earth can show us Such a flow’r and leaf as thine.

Sweet the nails and sweet the wood, laden with so sweet a load.

1. Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory; Tell his triumph far and wide; Tell aloud the famous story of his body crucified; How upon the Cross a Victim, Vanquishing in death, he died. Faithful Cross… 2. Eating of the tree forbidden, Man had sunk in Satan’s snare, When our pitying Creator Did this second Tree prepare; Destined, many ages later, That first evil to repair. Sweet the nails… 3. Such the order God appointed When for sin he would atone; To the serpent thus opposing Schemes yet deeper than his own; Thence, the remedy procuring, Whence the fatal wound had come. Faithful Cross… 4. So when now at length the fullness Of the sacred time drew nigh, Then the Son, the world’s Creator, Left his Father’s throne on high; From a Virgin’s womb appearing, Clothed in our mortality. Sweet the nails… 5. All within a lowly manger, Lo, a tender babe he lies! See his gentle Virgin Mother Lull to sleep his infant cries. While the limbs of God incarnate Round with swathing bands she ties. Faithful Cross… 6. Thus did Christ to perfect manhood In our mortal flesh attain: Then of his free choice he goeth To a death of bitter pain; As a lamb, upon the altar Of the Cross, for us is slain. Sweet the nails…

Page 13: WA April 9 GOOD FRIDAY 2020 · that, leading our life in tranquility and quiet, we may glorify God the Father almighty. Let us kneel. (silent prayer) Let us stand. Priest: Almighty

13

7. Lo, with gall his thirst he quenches. See the thorns upon his brow. Nails his tender flesh are rending. See, his side is opened now. Whence, to cleanse the whole creation, Streams of blood and water flow. Faithful Cross… 8. Lofty Tree, bend down thy branches, To embrace thy sacred load; Oh, relax the native tension Of that all to rigid wood; Gently, gently bear the members Of they dying King and God. Sweet the nails… 9. Tree of all alone found worthy Our great Victim to sustain, Harbor from the raging tempest, Ark that saved the world again. Tree, with sacred Blood anointed Of the Lamb for sinners slain. Faithful Cross… 10. Glory be to God, and honor In the highest, as is meet, To the Son and to the Father, And th’Eternal Paraclete, Whose is boundless praise and power Thru the ages infinite. Sweet the nails…

SILENT REFLECTION SCRIPTURE READING Cantor, then All:

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. John 19:31-37

Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for the Sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and that they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may come to believe. For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled: Not a bone of it will be broken. And again another passage says: They will look upon him whom they have pierced. The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ. The presider gives a reflection on the scripture passage.

The Novena to Divine Mercy

Presider: Please kneel. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

“Today bring to Me all mankind, especially all sinners, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy.”

All: Most Merciful Jesus, whose very nature it is to have compassion on us and to forgive us, do not look upon our sins, but upon our trust which we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us all into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart,

and never let us escape from it. We beg this of You by Your love which unites You to the Father and the Holy Spirit. Eternal Father, turn your merciful gaze upon all mankind and especially poor sinners, all enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, show us Your mercy, that we may praise the omnipotence of Your mercy for ever and ever. Amen.

Presider: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls,

and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the world and empty Yourself out upon us.

All: O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a font of mercy for us, I trust in You! (three times) Presider: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come;

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. All: Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Presider: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. All: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Presider: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead. All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Cantor: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, (or presider) Soul and divinity, of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins,

and the sins of the whole world. Cantor, then All:

All: (verses 1-8, verse 10)

All: (verse 9 only)

Cantor, then All: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (three times) Presider: Please stand. Let us pray. All: Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless, and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair, nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy Itself. Amen.

Presider: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen.

This concludes the Divine Mercy Novena and the Tre Ore service. We encourage you at home to continue praying the Divine Mercy Novena each day at the 3:00 hour,
