The much anticipated biennial seminar, catering for all sectors of the turf industry of Western Australia has returned once again to the Tompkins on Swan Function Centre on Wednesday 31st May 2017.

The “WA Turf Seminar 2017” has a great line up of professional speakers presenting on a range of topics. Dr Stewart Dallas is the Principal Consultant for Urban Water Management at Josh Byrne & Associates and he will lead off with a presentation on “What water where? Water options for Perth’s drying climate’. Stewart will showcase the various water and wastewater related projects that he has worked on during his 20 year career, including the most recent WGV Waterwise Development Exemplar and Wungong. His presentation will include strategies that demonstrate water conservation and efficiency measures, planning for large-scale recycled water options and water quality management.

Both regional and metropolitan delegates will benefit from a presentation by Don Woodcock, previously from the Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management group. Reliable water supply for parks and gardens, has long been an issue in regional areas, however with the assistance of grant funds, shire councils have been able to build infrastructures to harvest rainwater which is now used on recreational sites within the towns. Many of these towns have now finished a number of these construction projects such as dams, tanks, roadside curbing and the installation of solar pumps to capture and store rain water. These works have helped minimise the use of expensive scheme water piped from Mundaring Weir to water parks, ovals and town gardens. It’s a model that could certainly be replicated in Perth’s outer regions, and perhaps within new developments.

Erik Kinlon, General Manager, Business Development and Marketing at HG Sportsturf will provide a visual update on the 60,000 seat Perth Stadium. HG Sports Turf, in conjunction with Greenacres Turf Group was appointed to prepare the pitch, growing and installing more than 17,000 square metres of hybrid turf for the Perth Stadium playing surface.

A panel from the Green Space Alliance (GSA), headed by Warren Stephens from the City of Belmont, will be in attendance for an introduction and discussion forum to share information on where the alliance is directing its current energies. They are keen for delegate input. The GSA has achieved a discussion paper and position statement and have presented to Ministers, Director Generals, and government departments on the vital importance of securing and providing enough quality green space for all, for ever.

Dr Phillip Ford from PGG Wrightson Turf will be providing a guide tor successful and sustainable winter over sowing in turf. Dr Ford has over thirty years of involvement in turf as an educator and researcher.

Peter Ruscoe, Turf Consultant, Sports Turf Technology will provide an update on the project he commenced in 2015, being a long-term study of the sting nematode on turf in Western Australia, under the guidance of Dr Graham Stirling in Queensland.

Dr Pieter Poot from the University of Western Australia School of Plant Biology will present a summary on the “Application of Soil Amendments to Maintain Turf Quality on Sandy Soils under Reduced Irrigation”. Pieter joined the UWA Turf Industries Research Steering Committee in 2012 and has lead the turf soil amendment research project since then.

Peter Briscoe, Managing Director, Bioactive Soil Solutions, will be presenting on “Understanding the microbial relationship for growing high performance turf ”. Peter has been engaged in a diversity of turf improvement programs with many of Australia’s elite sporting venues, some of which include the MCG, Aurora Stadium, Barnbougle Golf Course and Moe Racecourse.

And to close out the speaking program, Mr John Forrest from South Metropolitan TAFE, will present to delegates an encouraging lecture about “How to conduct your own valid empirical research”. Experimentation and innovation are key elements to effective and resilient turf management in today’s modern industry and the Turf Lecturing team at South Metro TAFE are very supportive towards promoting a sustained and rewarding education for all within the turf community.

We’re confident that the day will be well worth your attendance.

Mr Peter Ruscoe – Senior Turf Consultant, Sports Turf Technology Peter completed a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Horticulture with honours at the University of Queensland, Gatton College in 1990. Peter has worked in the turf industry since then and joined Sports Turf Technology in 2002 before becoming part owner shortly after. He was past President of the Turf Grass Association of Australia (WA) 2004-2009.In 2015, Peter commenced a master’s research project of “Sting Nematode on Turf Grass in Western Australia”, under the guidance of Dr Graham Stirling through the University of Queensland. The research project will involve:

1. Undertake a survey of plant-parasitic nematodes on municipal playing fields in the Perth region. 2. Study the population dynamics and depth distribution of the sting nematode on kikuyu. 3. Conduct experiments to assess:

• The pathogenicity of the sting nematode on various turf species. • The damage threshold of the sting nematode on kikuyu. • The effect of compost soil amendment on the severity of damage by the sting nematode on kikuyu.

Peter will be presenting “Sting Nematode Management Research Update”

Dr Pieter Poot - Plant Scientist, School of Biological Sciences, University of Western Australia Dr Poot is a plant scientist from the Netherlands who has been researching how plants are adapted to their environment (e.g. drought, waterlogging, low nutrients etc.) for the last 20 years. Dr Poot completed his MSc (Plant Physiology and Ecology) in 1991 and his PhD (Plant Ecophysiology) in 1996 at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Pieter is currently employed as a Senior Lecturer in Plant Conservation Biology and Ecophysiology at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He is coordinator of the Conservation Biology major and has won several excellence in coursework teaching awards. Pieter arrived in WA in 1998 and has since then worked on a range of research topics including: the diversity of water-use patterns of different functional groups in a Banksia woodland (contributing to a multi-authored paper in the prestigious journal Nature), the ecophysiology of rare plant species restricted to shallow-soiled ironstone communities, and the role of drought in crown decline of common eucalypt species. He joined the UWA Turf Industries Research Steering Committee in 2012 and has lead the turf soil amendment research project.Pieter will be presenting “Application of soil amendments to maintain turf quality on sandy soils under reduced irrigation.”
