I’m sure a lot of you have heard of the con- troversial euthanization of a young giraffe named Marius. The Denmark zoo made the argument that the euthanization was necessary to prevent in- breeding of the giraffe. Had there been no other options for this giraffe there may not have been as much anger and disgust felt towards the euthani- zation. Though the fact that there were other zoos willing to accept this giraffe makes this act even more upsetting. To add to the unnecessary death the young giraffe was dissected and disassembled in front of a crowd of 5th and 6th graders. Ohio’s very own Jack Hannah had words to say about this unneeded euthanization. Jack & the Columbus Zoo have now raised funds to rescue any animals put into the same situation as Marius. There was a rumor that another giraffe was to be euthanized because of possible inbreeding. In my opinion, the worst part of all this is that there were several zoos willing to adopt the giraffe. There were also other solutions to the issue of inbreeding. NUMS Wildcat Beat Digital Newspaper Editors: Madison P., Bethany S., Anna A. Supervisor: Mrs. Tenah McMahan Administrator: Mr. Ma Burggraf

Yes Mr. Bridges we have waited and waited for Spring!

(In honor of Natl. Poetry Month!)

While yet we wait for springby Robert Seymour Bridges

While yet we wait for spring, and from the dry And blackening east that so embitters March, Well-housed must watch grey fields and meadows parch, And driven dust and withering snowflake fly; Already in glimpses of the tarnish'd sky The sun is warm and beckons to the larch, And where the covert hazels interarch Their tassell'd twigs, fair beds of primrose lie. Beneath the crisp and wintry carpet hid A million buds but stay their blossoming; And trustful birds have built their nests amid The shuddering boughs, and only wait to sing Till one soft shower from the south shall bid, And hither tempt the pilgrim steps of spring.

Robert Seymour Bridges (1844 - 1930) was a British poet.

Irish-American Heritage Month

By: Dezrae M.

Irish-American Heritage month celebrates the achievements of all Irish immigrants and their descendants that have helped form our nation. Actually, Irish-American Heritage month is less known than Black History Month or National His-panic Heritage Month. Irish-American Heri-tage month is usually celebrated with St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day was original-ly a religious holiday, when St. Patrick intro-duced Christianity in Ireland, now everyone celebrates all things Irish. Every year on St. Patrick’s Day the Taoiseach (head of gov-ernment or prime minister in Ireland) visits the United States for a Shamrock Ceremo-ny. This takes place in the morning at the White House where a crystal bowl contain-ing a shamrock is given to the President in the Oval Office. This followed be a Friends of Ireland luncheon which is hosted by The House Speaker in the Capitol or Rayburn House Office Building.

Here are 2 statistics on Irish Heritage…• 34.1 million U.S residents claimed Irish ancestry in 2012. This was 7 more times the population of Ireland itself!• Ireland is the 2nd largest reported ancestry behind German.

Actually there a lot of celebrities we all love that come from Ireland or are Irish descent. Niall Horan, Louis Walsh, Glen Power, Colin Farrell, Danny O’ Donoghue, Oscar Wilde (deceased), Cillian Murphy, and Colin Murphy. See the live around us and we love them. Irish-Americans have played in an important role in our nation. We also love them like I love Niall Horan.

Vex Robotics By Jessica V.

As you know one of the vex teams have made it to California and here is some of the information about their trip:• They will leave monday April 21st • They will return Monday April 28th • A few things they are planing to do is to go to

Disneyland, Pacific Ocean, and go to the beach• At the pancake breakfast and the auction

they raised $1,500• To get to California and back they have to

raise $1,600 per person so they have to have $8,000

• Some of the fundraisers they have done and are going to do are the pancake breakfast, letting the teachers wear jeans, Roosters, and some of the businesses donated.

That was some of the information about the trip to California. We wish them a safe trip and the best of luck competing at the National Robotics Challenge!

Recipe: Sparkle StrawberriesBy: Madison P.

What you’ll need1 pint fresh strawberries1/4 cup colored sugar4 ounces softened cream cheese2 teaspoons confectioners sugar4 teaspoons milk1/2 teaspoon vanilla extractInstructionsWash the whole berries and pat them dry with a paper towel. Fill a shallow bowl with col-ored sugar (you can buy this at the grocery store or mix your own by stirring two drops of food coloring into 1/4 cup of sugar).

In a mixing bowl, blend the cream cheese, confectioners sugar, milk, and vanilla extract with a fork until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if needed to achieve the desired con-sistency.

Holding the berries by their stems, your kids can dip them into the cream cheese mix-ture, roll them in the sugar, and enjoy.

Thin Out the “Snow” in Your Computer

Written by Kayla K.

Snow just takes up space, doesn’t it? It’s fun and good for a while, but later it just takes up space and becomes annoying. (I am not a cold weather person, can’t you tell?) The same is for your old files on your computer and in your number. This March, maybe it is time to clean out those old files from 2012-2013. Honestly, do you really need those files from last year’s science? No. The best way to thin out the “snow” in your computer is to start by just looking at the files you have. Once you have an idea of what you have, you can delete what you don’t need. You can also filter what you see if all the files overwhelm you. (Go to “Computer” > “Your Number Folder” > Search Bar in the upper right hand corner > keyword or date) A safe place to start thinning would be things that are from past years. Almost done! You need to organize what is left in your folder. Separating different classes helps to make sure you can quickly and effec-tively find the designated file. To start, place all math in a folder, language arts in a folder, etc… Once you are done, you should be able to find everything quickly.

Mock Trial By: Kenzie L Our official trial was on April 1st, 2014. We faced other schools that we are unaware of who they were, and we didn’t know until the competition. And it paid off because both teams received a SUPERIOR rating (see certificate above that each team was honored to achieve!) The trial was based off of the Lois Lowry story The Giver. Individually each side of the trial (defense & plaintiff) have a best attorney or best witness selected. For NUMS our Mock Trial teams again excelled at the competition and did amazing. Playlist Live. By: Miranda R Recently, I was able to go to this conven-tion called Playlist Live. It’s a convention held on March 21st through March 23rd in Orlando, Florida for conferences about online creators and con-sumers, where some creators would perform and have meetups. So pretty much it’s where a bunch of well-known youtubers and fangirls go to meetup and have a blast. The convention, in general, was amazing! I got to see friends that I was finally able to meet for the first time, which was wonderful. I also got to see many people that have inspired me and just made me happy throughout the years, which was pretty awe-some, too. There were comedians (Wasabi Produc-tions), bands (King The Kid), and musical artists (Rebecca Black) performing on the mainstage, there were Q&A’s, signings, meet and greets, and it was just an absolutely amazing experi-ence. It did take awhile to get through lines for the meet and greets and a few other things, but other than that, there wasn’t much to complain about. If you’re interested in Playlist Live 2015, or Playlist Live Tristate 2014, you can check out their website at Playlist-Live.com. Some of the friends I mentioned earlier (That you should definitely follow on Twitter) are Ben J. Pierce (@BenJPierce), Jack Dodge (@Jack_Dodge_), Han-nah Gogan (@hannahgogan), Niki and Sammy Al-bon (@NikinSammy, @SammyAlbon, @NikiAlbon), Emma Blackery (@EmmaBlackery), and Aaron Williams (@AbracaAwesome).Next year is sure to be just as good, so hopeful-ly I’ll see some of you there! Vidcon is approach-ing quickly also, so check that out, too: Vidcon.com.

MARCH of Dimes By Lacie N.

Throughout the past three decades the number of premature births has risen dra-matically. Approximately half a million babies are born premature each year. The March of Dimes is a nonprofit institution improving the health of premature babies. The March of Dimes holds annual walks called The March for Babies. These walks have been going on since 1970 and raise awareness of the issues, as well as money for research and programs. Money goes into research of why a child is born earlier and how we can stop this from happening. Research of how premature birth affects the child’s organs and regular lives is also funded.

Treatments for defects and inadequate de-velopment are created with the money raised. Throughout the years The March of Dimes has raised 2.3 billion dollars to save and benefit the lives of millions of babies. Support your March of Dimes Organization.
