Welcome to the start of a new and exciting year for the Volkswagen Club of Victoria. The first meeting for the year will be more relaxed with a BBQ and general social night at Shed 4 to get the year off to a good start. One piece of business that needs to be dealt with is to decide on the venue/plan for the 2009 Bug-in so that it can be presented at this year’s bug-in. If you would like to be involved please come and see me at the meeting. For those going to the Bug-in this year please contact Andrew Ermel.

Kennett River is on again with the always planned but yet to be run surf and fishing competitions so bring your gear and remember Kennett River is self-catering, however the shop will be open where you can get a decent coffee and burger.

Well that’s it, only a short one this month, hope to see you at the general meeting.

Once a shed

The Kombi’s life does not always have to end this way, the potential for a second life is always possible.

They turn up in the most unusual of places and you will find them being used in an equally unusual way, the call to save a potential Kombi will most likely come when you least expect it and you will have to move fast.

For Stuart the call came from a family friend “Stu I’ve got you a kombi”.

Stuart’s 1967 MicrobusDay of the Volkswagen 2007 Car of the Show Winner (Standard category)

Seven hours later Stuart found himself in southern N.S.W in a small town called Balranald looking at what was to be the beginning of a lot of work, his 1967 Microbus.

The bus was far from loved and was currently being used as a tool shed. History has it that the kombi was brought by a local in the eighties and used as a camper, the engine died and was left on a farm nearby where over time the running gear was removed and the rust settled in.

In 2001 when Stuart purchased his bus, splitties had not reached their desirable heights of today, so what would you expect to pay for a neglected

bus being used as a shed? That’s right, a new shed. Stuart offered to remove the old shed and replace it with a new shed. The offer was accepted, both parties were more than happy and the bus was lifted on the back of a truck with a forklift ready for the seven hour trip home.

Upon arrival home a closer look at the bus revealed the rear engine vents were placed below the beltline and were pressed inwards, indicating German manufacture.

The homemade camper kit was removed and surprisingly found factory headlining and trim indicating this was not a Kombi, it was a Microbus.

The bus had the usual rust spots in the sills and the front nose but the rest of the bus was in good shape. Underneath the many coats of house paint were the factory colours, two tone Sea Blue and Nimbus White. The fact that the bus was in such good shape and the find of the factory colours paved the way to restore the bus to it’s original splendor, factory specs. So began the many years spent on obtaining the correct parts and completing a full restoration.

The transformation from shed to a Day of the Volkswagen Car of the Show Winner is often a long but potentially rewarding process.

2007 was definitely the year for second life possibilities with both Standard and Modified categories at the 2007 Day of the Volkswagen won by early Kombi’s.

“Kombinationskraftwagen” “Combined-Use Vehicle” is the official German language for the Volkswagen Transporter/Kombi but as they reach their winter years their use has become somewhat diverse. Tool shed being a popular retirement for some.

The annual and ever popularKennett River camp-outis on again in 2008.

By the end of the 1960s Volkswagen was in serious trouble. The Type 3 and Type 4 models had been comparative flops, and the NSU-based K70 also failed to woo buyers. The company knew that Beetle production had to end one day, but the conundrum of replacing it had been a never ending nightmare. The key to the problem was the 1964 acquisition of Audi/Auto-Union. The Ingolstadt-based firm had the necessary expertise in front wheel drive and water-cooled engines that Volkswagen so desperately needed to produce a credible Beetle successor. Audi influences paved the way for this new generation of Volkswagens, known as the Polo, Golf and Passat.

Production of the Beetle at the Wolfsburg factory switched to the VW Golf in 1974, marketed in the United States as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the 1970s and as the Golf in the 1980s. This was a car unlike its predecessor in most significant ways, both mechanically as well as visually.

The Angular styling was designed by the Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro and followed trends for small family cars set by the 1959 Mini and 1972 Renault 5—the Golf had a transversely mounted, water-cooled engine in the front, driving the front wheels, and had a hatchback, a format that has dominated the market segment ever since.

Beetle production continued in smaller numbers at other German factories until 1978, but mainstream production shifted to Brazil and Mexico.

While Volkswagen’s range of cars soon became similar to that of other large European car-makers, the Golf has been the mainstay of the Volkswagen line-up since its introduction, and the mechanical basis for several other cars of the company. There have been five generations of the Volkswagen Golf, the first of which was produced from the summer of 1974 until the end of 1983. Its chassis also spawned the Scirocco coupe and Jetta sedan.

The second generation Golf hatchback/Jetta sedan ran from late 1983 to late 1991. In 1991, Volkswagen launched the third-generation Golf and it was third time lucky when the Volkswagen Golf was voted European Car of the Year for 1992. The previous two versions had lost out to the Citroën CX in 1975 and the Fiat Uno in 1984.

This time the sedan version of the Golf was badged Vento in Europe (but Jetta in the USA). The fourth incarnation of the Golf arrived in late 1997, its chassis spawned a host of other cars within the Volkswagen group—the Volkswagen Bora (the sedan, still called Jetta in the USA), Volkswagen New Beetle, Seat Toledo, Seat Leon, Audi A3, Audi TT and Skoda Octavia.

However, it was beaten into third place for the 1998 European Car of the Year award by the winning Alfa Romeo 156 and runner-up Audi A6. The current Volkswagen Golf was launched in late 2003, came runner-up to the Fiat Panda in the 2004 European Car of the Year, and has so far spawned the new generation Seat Toledo, Skoda Octavia and Audi A3 hatchback ranges as well as a new mini-MPV and the Seat Altea.

The fifth-generation golf is now available and the GTI boasts a 2.0 L Turbo charged direct injection engine. The fifth generation Jetta is currently together with the GLI with the same 2.0 L turbo charged motor of the European GTI.

The other main models have been the Polo, a smaller car than the Golf, and the larger Passat for the segment above the Golf. As of 2005, there have been four incarnations of the Polo: Mk 1 (1976), Mk 2 (1981, facelifted 1990), Mk 3 (1994, facelifted 1999) and the current Mk 4 (2002).

Volkswagen currently offers a number of its vehicles with an advanced, light duty diesel engine known as the TDI. While extremely popular in the European market, light duty diesels do not yet enjoy the same wide acceptance in the American marketplace, despite increased fuel economy and performance comparable to gasoline engines due to turbo charging.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 4 of the 10 most fuel efficient vehicles available for sale in the U.S. in 2004 were powered by Volkswagen diesel engines. Sales of light duty diesel engine technology are increasing as gasoline prices rise. Products such as the Toyota Prius might have highlighted the economy of non-gasoline engines, but in reality, a Volkswagen TDI engine is often found to be more efficient than the Prius on the highway (although not so when driving in the city).

The ForgottenKDF Hanomag Volkswagen Prototype by Gary Colis

So what is a KDF Hanomag?

The first 3 prototype Volkswagens (series 3) were built by Porsche in a garage attached to his house (the official registered address of Volkswagen at this time) over a 28 month period. Hitler was a man on a mission. He did not want to wait around, and in February 1937, ordered that the next series of 30 prototypes be built by his favourite auto company Mercedes Benz, much to their distain. They were never too keen on the whole project from the start, trying to convince Hitler that real market was stately cars for the rich. Hitler handed the “Volkswagen” project over to Robert Ley, who was a big organizer and in charge of propaganda. His chief tool to convince Germans that they should be happy compliant workers was the

“Strength Through Joy” organization, or in German, “Kraft Durch Freude”. These 30 cars (series 30) were made in 4 months. After testing, Robert Ley’s personal assistant, Dr. Bodo Lafferentz, simultaneously:

1. Ordered another 30 (series 60) were made by Mercedes for further testing. All these proto-types looked pretty much the same.

2. Put a team together to come up with the final design.

3. Put a team together to design a production facility, the scale of which the world had never seen.

4. Organized sneak previews and publicity and advertising of the new car.

5. Organized how the cars were to be financed by the public.

6. Set up dealer and training networks.

7. Looked at what other variations and uses the car could be put to.

All this happened at break-neck speed. The final design was quite different to the prototypes and was pretty much settled on by early 1938. A promotional tin plate children’s toy issued in 1937 showed pretty much the final design but with a split front windscreen and suicide doors. We know that the doors were switched to front hinged doors at the last moment following new trends emerging in the US.

What we do not know too much about what other uses was Dr. Bodo working on at this period. We do know he organized a convertible version to be built (as apposed to cabriolet version which only was in effect a large sunroof). He clearly organized a military version to be designed in secret. But what else did we come up with? It would seem from this Hanomag prototype, that he had in mind a coach built version along the traditional lines of, for example, Rolls Royce. They would supply

a complete running chassis with front cowl and windscreen to, say Mullinger, Vanden-Plas, or in Australia, Martin & King. These coach builders would build the rest of the body in their own style.

I suggest that this is exactly what the Hanomag version is. I also know there was also an Adler version as well, which was badly damaged in action during the war. Where as Mercedes and Opal did their best to sink or ignore the Volkswagen project, smaller companies would have clamored to get a piece of the action.

The Hanomag Prototype (designated Type 13H) frontal design is taken straight from the other prototypes. I suggest that this is the only version they could rely on as stable. The split windscreen is quite likely a design feature considered for the final production form of the Volkswagen if the budget stretched far enough. From the door back, the design is very Hanomag. Very consistent with

the design of cars they were building at the time. There is a rear internal window which allows view through the engine compartment to a split rear window. This is also similar to the other prototypes, except they had air slits to look through rather than the outer glass. It is also similar to the Tatra car of the Czech Republic. A car which also had a 4 cylinder horizontally apposed engine in the rear and torsion bar suspension and swing axles etc. So similar in fact that Tatra was about to sue Porsche for numerous beeches of copywrite and patents. Hitler told him not to worry and 2 months later invaded the small republic.

But back to the Hanomag. The roof line extends higher, further back, this gives the car a lot more head space in the rear. Compared to other prototypes, this is a luxury car. By moving the rear seat back to the firewall (there is no luggage area behind the seat) and widening the sides out to the guard line, the car is given a great feeling of space. The doors are also noticeably longer which gives easier rear access. Extra touches such as the unique art deco steering wheel, sill plates, storage compartments and other fine touches make this more of a middle class luxury car.

In May 1938, The foundation stone of the “Volkswagen” factory was to be laid. Prior, Dr. Bodo & Robert Ley convinced Hitler that the car should be sold as a “Kraft Durch Freude Wagen”.

And so, much to everyones surprise the car was renamed so on that day at the ceremony. Hence forth the company was known as KDF Werke. As a result the unique car became a KDF-Hanomag. All beetles built during the war years (and there were not many) were called KDFs. Building of the factory was halted in 1941 with stage one not yet completed.

The KDF Hanomag was completed in 1939 before war broke out and was delivered for field testing by my sister-in-law’s grand father. He delivered a few such interesting vehicles for testing. They were all top secret.

The cars at that stage had all standard KDF chassis and mechanicals. When war was declared, this car became an officer’s “commandwagen”. Could this have been the very first VW Commandwagen? The Kubelwagen military derivative of the KDF was soon in production. This version had higher ground clearance, gearing more suited for off road use and the limited slip differential was designed by ZF specifically for this vehicle to give more grip. These attributes made the Kubelwagen a very useful vehicle. As the Kubel’s chassis was identical in fit to body as the KDF, I imagine it was soon realized that the fitment of such a chassis would be of great benefit to the KDF Hanomag in its use as a commandwagen, especially with its long swooping tail.

In 1943, records show that a Kubel chassis of the number now fitted to the Hanomag was built and set aside at the Wolfsburg plant. It sat for 6 months and then was delivered to Porsche. It would seem to me that the most plausible explanation is that this was prearranged by the officer in charge of the Hanomag, and who also had some influence.

As soon as there was an opportune time, the car was withdrawn from service for Porsche himself to refit the car with the Kubel chassis and make other improvements, such as better heating. The low hung heater pipes could not have been fitted to a standard chassis and left to drag across driveways etc. Was this the first sedan ever to be fitted with a limited slip diff? A model for future Beetle bodied Commandwagens?

So this is basically a vehicle which survived the war. It was discovered in East Germany soon after the Berlin wall was opened for all to cross. A little battered, but still basically in reasonable shape.

Is this the only pre war prototype KDF sedan to have survived? It would seem so.

Somewhere the original engine went AWOL.

A suitable replacement has now been found and will soon be fitted. The car definitely is authentic.

It is what it is. It is rare, unique and very historical.

From the Archivesby Tony Albers, VWCV Editor

If only as a child I had not played with my Micro Model and kept it in the box that it came, locked it away in my cupboard for a time later in my life that I never thought would come.

All children think like that, NOT! The first thing on your mind as a child was to rip the toy from the box that it came send it sideways into your mothers freshly painted skirting boards. It is not until much later in life, usually during mid life, that we come to appreciate the finer aesthetics of our childhood possessions, especially when you come across the toy you owned as a child at a swap meet priced at one hundred and fifty times its original value.

For some of us it was the toy Micro Model of a Volkswagen Kombi Bus made in diecast zinc with a two-piece riveted construction, finished in red enamel with silver detailing. These robust Micro Models as we know them were made by Goodwood (Australia) Productions Pty Ltd, Australia.

Micro Before the Second World War most toys in Australia and New Zealand were imported. War resulted in a cessation of supplies, but equally provided new skills in manufacturing for the war effort. As a result after the war a number of ex-servicemen formed Goodwood Australia Pty Ltd and in 1952 launched a new series of toys called Micro Models.

Between February 1952 and June 1961 Goodwood (Australia) Productions made a range of zinc diecast scale model toy cars. These Micro Models effectively documented the Australian and imported car manufacturing industry featuring cars, trucks and specialist vehicles.

Selling for between 55 cents and $1.25 they offered children an opportunity to play with vehicles they saw on the street every day. The Micro Models proved to be more desirable than other lines as they represented familiar outlines to Australian children. The articulated Peters Ice Cream truck was of particular interest as these were a common sight transporting milk throughout the Aussie suburbs.

Production date for the Micro Model Volkswagen Beetle (Type 1) and Kombi (Type 2) was between 1952 and 1961, they were 45mm high, 40mm wide and lasted a life time.

VALLA 2008 Volkswagen Spectacular

For 5 days between Thursday 31 July and Monday 4 August 2008 the Volkswagen Spectacular will once again be held at Nambucca Heads on the north coast of New South Wales. The more common name for this bi-annual extravaganza, known far and wide by VW fanatics, is Valla. This name is an abbreviation of the Valla Beach Resort which is located 4 km north of Nambucca Heads.

Many members of the VWCV have religiously attended Valla for years and continue to rave about the event, the hundreds and hundreds of fantastic VWs, the VW parade that literally brings the main street town of Nambucca Heads to a standstill, the Saturday night charity auction where bargains abound and the heaps of swap meet goodies that are there to be had for all.

The Valla Beach Resort is the epicentre of VW activity for the duration of the event offering cabins, powered and non powered sites for tin tents and standard tents. The Volkswagen Club of Victoria has 10 powered sites reserved at the Valla Beach Resort $10 deposit required by March 1st.

Accommodation at the Valla Beach Resort is taken up very quickly so if you intend to make the trip this year, and you are interested in a powered site, please contact John Stevens 9890 2548 AH or see John at the February club meeting.

Any group travelling arrangements or convoy up to the event can be settled closer to the event.

bigger and there for considerably heavier, the vehicle certainly performed exceptionally well.

There is not much that the EOS doesn’t come with and if you look at the features you will see that 17” alloy wheels are standard and 18” are optional. Among some of the other options are Bi Xenon headlights, satellite navigation, leather upholstery and walnut wood grain inserts in dashboard and doors.

Once again thankyou to Michael Cardwell and the staff from South Yarra Volkswagen for their hospitality at our October club meeting and for allowing Tony and I to test drive the new VW cars.

I wonder how many club members got a new VW from Santa this Christmas. We are looking forward to our next club meeting to see who will be the first to have a new EOS.

Andrew Ermel VWCV Assistant Editor.

At the clubs October meeting we were all privileged to have the new EOS demonstrated to us by the staff at South Yarra Volkswagen. Thanks to the patient staff who let us all have a go at pressing the roof activation buttons again and again. It was a real buzz to see the roof tuck itself away so neatly into the boot area.

In the last issue of the Wagensville Deluxe Tony and I reported on our test drive of the TSI Golf. This edition we are pleased to give our report on the test drive of the new turbo EOS.

The EOS is no ordinary convertible. Volkswagen calls its new roof system in the EOS the Sliding Roof Coupe or “CSC”. For those that are wondering, EOS comes from Greek mythology meaning “The Goddess of the dawn”.

Our test drive took us around the streets of South Yarra and along the Yarra Boulevard to Abbotsford. We drove through some of the older areas of Melbourne, through back streets of Abbotsford, were we had chance to give the EOS a work out.

The noise from turbo charged 2.0 litre engines was very quiet regardless of whether the roof was up or down. Road noise was minimal considering we drove the EOS for most of the test drive with the roof down. The suspension was smooth and surprisingly for an open top car the body was quite stiff which made for a sporty feel and responsive handling.

It not surprising since the EOS comes standard with Brake Assist and Electronic Stabilisation Program and the EOS we drove was fitted with the six speed transmission. For most of the test drive I had my video camera on the dash and at no time did it move or rattle around. In fact the video images are quite clear and I will have footage at the February meeting to show to the members.

For a diesel it was very smooth and responsive although lacked some of the instant power that you would experience in the Golf or Beetle Turbo. Considering that this is a true luxury car, much

wagensville Deluxe February 2008

The Volkswagen Club of Victoria has been invited to participate in the Shannons Walk 2008 that is a essentially a large display of classic cars from the major Victorian car clubs that supports the 3 days of the Phillip Island Classic motor races over the 7th, 8th & 9th of March. There were over 39 car clubs and 17 manufacturers stands in attendance last year. We have secured a site that will comfortably display 10 Volkswagens and room to set up our club merchandise stand.

SHANNONS WALK 2008

What is your earliest memory of a Volkswagen?1967. My Cousin Lynette came up from Melbourne in their ’64 Beetle, and my family went for a day trip to Lake Burrumbeet from a swim. I got a ride back to Ballart in the backseat. I was 5 years old.

What first got you interested in Volkswagens? My brother Kerry was building Buggies to race off-road primarily at Sealake and Hattah. He used Volkswagen components for the buggies.

What do you like most about Volkswagens?German engineering, reliability, value for money particulary when I brought my first car – a ’64 Beetle. They’re tough and you can have a lot of fun with them.

How and why did you become involved with the Volkswagen club of Victoria?Over the years my focus has changed from motorsport to restoration and I wanted to meet like minded people who would be able to help me with the restoration of initially a ’54 oval Beetle and most recently my ’57 single cab ute. I’m looking for sharing experiences of restoration and locating those hard to find bits.

What is your favourite Volkswagen Type you have owned? In 1981 I was involved in off road racing and I built from scratch a modified ’56 Beetle into a “Baja”. It was my favorite because I enjoyed both the building and the racing of it. Incidentally it was registered and it was my daily driver.

If you could have any Volkswagen what would it be?If it was to be an early version I would love to own a barn door kombi or if it was to be a late model version I would like a GTI Golf. Barndoors are unique and the GTI Golf, they speak for themselves!

What has been your most enjoyable experience in a Volkswagen? In 30 years of experiences with Vollkswagens it is hard to pinpoint any one experience above the others. My early days are the most memorable because of the company of others, camping out, making do without lots of money and making our own fun.

Is your unique Volkswagen enthusiasm recognised and supported by family, friends and community?Of course, coming from a Volkswagen family – four of my siblings have owned VW”s in the early days. My wife is very understanding, she only knew beetles as bugs, pests to be swept out of the house, put under the mat, but now it’s got too much for her and we’ve cleaned them all out, built a shed and put everything up there.

Is your family car a Volkswagen?Well no? Our current car is a 2001 C 200 Kompressor Mercedes Benz. I appreciate German engineering and I have stuck with this European influence.

What is your profession and do your Volkswagen interests and profession cross paths?I am a qualified auto electrician by trade but now I work for my brother Kerry who contracts to Powercor and specialises in under road boring. The only crossing of paths that I can recall was we use to have a VW compressor to run a jack hammer.

If you could go back in time what Volkswagen experience would you change?Racing in Boundary Bend in 1982 in my Baja with my navigator Greg Ryan. We had won the prologue which meant we got to start first in that class. However 3/4 of the way through the first lap we flipped the car over and ended up out of the race. So came home with lots of stories but no trophy.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how much of Volkswagen nut are you?I’m about a “7” I appreciate most other makes of cars to some degree.

For Peter his passion has not always been Volkswagens but for some reason he keeps coming back to them.

We would like to have 10 of the best classic Volkswagen (in keeping with the theme of the weekend) on display on either a permanent or a rotating basis throughout the weekend. Ideally we would like to display an early Beetle, Split and/or Oval window, Beetle from the 60’s, Split Screen Kombi, Bay window Kombi/Camper, Early Type 3, early Karmann Ghia, Country Buggy, and other early Volkswagens of interest.

Members providing vehicles for display will receive a free pass into the event for the day/s that they have their Volkswagens on display. We will have a total of x 10 3 day passes on rotation to cover all vehicles.

If you are interested in displaying your VW at the 2008 Shannons Walk please contact Dean Holden 0412 500 588 with a contact phone number and details of the Volkswagen you would like to include in the display.
