Pope's wheels for sale on eBay > Reuters - 5/2005
ROME - A second hand car once said to be registered in the name of Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger -the new Pope Benedict - is up for sale on eBay and the sky seems to be the limit when it comes tobidding.
The vehicle, a metallic grey 1999 Volkswagen Golf, went up for auction on the German site(www.ebay.de) at a minimum price of 9900 euros ($18,000) on Wednesday and, just over 24hours and more than 300 bids later, the price had hit one million euros ($1.8 million).
German website n-tv.de identified the seller as Benjamin Halbe, 21, from the town of Olpe inGermany's Sauerland region, who said he bought the car from a local dealer in January.
"It drives like heaven," the site quoted Halbe as saying. The website of the German newspaper Bild quoted an eBay spokeswoman in Germany as
saying the online auctioneer had checked with the vehicle licensing office which had confirmedthe name of the original owner was genuine.
Ratzinger, who is from Bavaria in southern Germany, has been at the Vatican for more thantwo decades and is not known to drive. The Vatican was not available for comment on theauction, which closes on May 5 at 7.30pm (5.30am NZT).
The auction site describes the vehicle as a two litre petrol-powered manual, with 75,000km onthe clock since it was first registered in March 1999.
"Does black smoke or white smoke come out of the exhaust pipe?" one posting on the siteasked - a reference to the signal used at the Vatican to show whether a new pope has been elect-ed by the secret conclave of cardinals.
"Very funny," was the reply.

It’s that time again! Pull out the polish ragsand dust off the spiders. This year we’reheading off to RAAF Base at Point Cook forthe VWCV’s annual concourse.
I’m hoping to see as many - if not morecars as we had at Scienceworks last year. There are indeed some beautiful cars in thisclub and it’s good to see them come out ofthe woodwork for our concourses.
This year should provide some beautifulbackdrops with the old aeroplane hangersand museum that we will be visiting on theday.
This year we have set 12 categories forthe show as follows -
Beetle – pre 1957Beetle – 1958 to 1967Beetle – 1968 to 2004New Beetle – 2000 – 2005Kombi – T1, T2Kombi – T3, T4, T5Type 3 – All years Karmann Ghia – All yearsGolf – Mk1, Mk2, Mk3Golf – Mk4, Mk5 Watercooled – all years (Passats, Polos, Audis, etc.)Concourse car of show (Highest scoring car of day).
Being a concourse show cars will bejudged on originality. This means the closerthe car is to it’s original state of manufac-ture, the more points it obtains in judging.Any modifications that aren’t made by VWor designed for that year model will bringyour score down. There are acceptions,(retractable seat belts for example), but thejudge will decide these on the day.
Entry for the show is $10 per vehicle forclub members only and judging begins at11am - so make sure your car’s parked andcleaned up by then. I again willbe head judge for the day, so Ihope to see all of you down atRAAF Base on the 29th of May. Ifyou have any questions pleasecall me on 0418 527 862. •

HippieDays Ahead
> From drive.com.au - 3/2005
Threatening to make legions of oldhippies and ageing surfers goweak at the knees, VolkswagenAustralia is poised to introduce themodern version of the old Kombicampervan of the flower-powerera.
It has everything, including thekitchen sink.
With unmistakable design linksto the early icon Kombis, whichdate back half a century, the latestversion the California comes withthe latest mod cons and cleverpackaging. It also benefits frommany new-millennium safetyfeatures and creature comforts.
With the new model, VWAustralia is casting its net wayfurther than the Woodstock generation anda few sun-bleached contemporaries of '60sworld surfing champ Midget Farrelly. Thefive-seat luxury motorhome, based on VW'sT5 van model launched here last year, willbe aimed squarely at the booming recre-ational market.
A new Kombi is very big news becauseof the enduring charm of the tough, go-anyplace older models which characterisedfreedom and romance and remind us of aless intense time.
Among a broad age group anddemographic, Kombis of the 1960s and 70sare considered very funky transport.
Some people can overdo their passion.Stephen Muller of Kombi Rescue in Sydney,a firm specialising in finding and restoringold models, owns 36 of them.
Launched in Germany last year, the newluxurious California Comfortline Kombi with4Motion all-wheel-drive system will be
introduced here in the last quarter of2005/first quarter of 2006, priced from about$90,000.
With 128kW five-cylinder turbo dieseland six-speed manual and Tiptronic trans-mission choices, the luxury camper sleepsfour. The versatile commuter/camper isbeing touted as a 365 days-a-year vehiclecapable of carrying five people to workthrough the week, and then converting tomultiple uses during the owner's leisuretime. Today's Kombi quickly converts to anovernight camper with gas cooking facili-ties, and an integrated powered fridge.
It also converts, if needed, to an office.Unlike bigger motorhomes, its compact
nature facilitates parking in cities and inunderground car parks.
The layout inside the Kombi is Teutonic, efficient and functional, with kitchen and itsrow of furniture on the left side, and twinbench seat on the right (this doubles as a
25
bed), as well as an electro-hydraulic light-weight aluminium pop-up roof to allowoccupants to stand up straight.
The upper bed measures 2 x 1.2 metresand there's even a swan-necked lamp forbedtime reading.
Like a good motorhome should, the VWprovides seats, a table (with foldout legs forindoor or outdoor use), outdoor chairs andcurtains for privacy and shade.
The furniture is aluminium with a corru-gated core to save weight. The multi-purpose table is stored in the interiorcladding of the sliding door and the twofolding seats hide in the rear door.
Roller blinds ensure privacy in the newCalifornia.
The fully-lined interior features a railsystem for the attachment of different softfurnishings and pockets. Net pouchesprovide flexible storage and the clever floor-mounted rails allow flexible seating/storagearrangements.
Mosquito nets in fold-up containersguarantee good flow-through ventilation. A cover closes off the sink and cooktop
when not required. The wardrobe and laundry cupboard in
the rear are conveniently accessible, openedand closed by a combination of hinged doorand Venetian blind.
Fresh and waste water tanks each havea capacity of 30 litres. An additional on-board 75Ah battery satisfies the increasedpower demand.
Along with the adhesion of 4Motion all-wheel drive, the California Kombi ownergets four-channel anti-lock brakes, anti-skidcontrol system and stability control.
Also awaiting the production go-aheadis a cheaper (about $55,000) Kombi Beachversion, with a retro fitout.
The entry model camper, to be poweredby a 96kW turbo diesel four-cylin-der engine, sleeps two. It has achoice of six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic auto and buyerswill be able to opt for the 4Motionsystem or two-wheel-drive. •

Adventure tothe Red Centre
The club is planning an epic three weekVolkswagen adventure that will commencearound fourteen months from now on 17 June2006 and conclude on 7 July 2006.
This will be a major event in theVolkswagen Club of Victoria’s calendar for2006 and comprises a 5,400 km four wheel VWodyssey (all on well made roads) fromMelbourne to Alice Springs in the NorthernTerritory and return. We will travel throughsuch interesting and famous places asAdelaide, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, CooberPedy, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, Yulara,Uluru, Woomera, Hawker and the FlindersRanges.
Accommodation throughout the threeweeks will be a mixture of on-site cabins, motel units and camping and there is amplescope for participants to vary the accommoda-tion mix according to personal taste. We planto cover as many of the famous main CentralAustralian tourist highlights as we can in thetime that is available. There will be the oppor-tunity over the three weeks to see many of thereal Australian outback/Red Centre icons andreally soak up the incredible and uniqueatmosphere that exists in this part of our greatcountry.
There are, of course, many significantchallenges that will be encountered bothorganising and participating in a trip of thismagnitude. These include travelling in convoy, sometimes for up to 10 hours a day, over 5,400kms, and the challenge of maintaining effec-tive communication and mutual support overextensive travelling distances and the remote-

ness and isolation of much of the country northof Port Augusta. Bearing this in mind we havedecided to restrict the number of cars on thetrip to a maximum of 12 to try to minimise ourexposure to major problems and difficulties. This will be a real “hands on” four wheel VWadventure where those participating will needto undertake extensive forward planning andpreparation of their cars, equipment andtravelling kit over the next fourteen months.
A very detailed 15 page trip brochure hasbeen prepared and this covers such diversematters as the proposed daily itinery, background information, travelling arrange-ments, car preparation, approximate costs andbooking arrangements. If you wanta copy of the brochure, that includesthe trip application form, please letme know and I can email one to you.Alternatively I can post a copy toyou if you do not have email facili-ties. Further information will beavailable at the April VWCV meetingat the RACV Club.

The VW Club of Victoria isauthorised by VicRoads toissue Classic and Historicplates to financial clubmembers with VWs over 25years old. The main objectiveof the CH permit system is toenable club members aminimal registration feebecause of the vehicles limitedusage.
The club requires all CHvehicles to undertake a safetycheck every two years. Safetychecks are similar to roadwor-thy checks. A roadworthycertificate can be accepted inlieu of a safety check. Theappointed club technicalofficers conduct safety checksat Tech Days and by appoint-ment.
A safety check ensures thatthe CH plate vehicle is safe todrive on club gazetted eventsand approved limited usage. Italso encourages the mainte-nance, restoration and preser-vation of all types of VWs.
