Waikerie Lutheran Primary School

Newsletter

Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christian community, equipping each student for life.

Message from the Principal Giving our children what they want after they’ve sufficiently whine and complained to us for an hour is like feeding a monster a steak and then wondering why he repeatedly ends up on our doorstep to torment us. When our kids are in a discontented mood, the last thing we must do for them is to give in to their demands—unless of course, they’re holding us hostage.

We must go after discontentment in our children with the same resolve we seek to uproot pride because both are rooted in a sinful, selfish mind-set and these are not the kinds of things we want growing in our kids.

It’s important to note that shedding tears because of a broken heart or a hope deferred is much different than a stomping fit. Both we and our children will endure times of heartache and weariness. Each of us at different times will wake up to days of grey skies and postponed breakthroughs. We’ll be sick and tired of being sick and tired, and we’ll long for the things for which we’ve been praying.

On such days, God doesn’t breathe a heavy sigh and wave us off with a dismissing hand. On the contrary, He aches for us when we ache in this way. He has made provision for us in those waiting seasons. He is near to the broken-hearted. He wraps His arms around us when we’re vulnerable and in need of some fresh courage. And He wants us to do the same for our weary kids.

But for the entitled, demanding, foot-stomping child, the only proper response is one of discipline and intervention.

Be prepared to leave the shop, the restaurant or the park. Cancel plans, interrupt conversations, and do what you have to do to take care of the outburst on the spot. Doing so sends the message to your child (and to the world): your character means so much to me that I’m willing to inconvenience myself any day of the week to deal with your wrong behaviours and misguided perspectives!

Once you’ve re-established your authority in the situation and your child is on the other side of his or her tantrum (and the emotions have died down), that’s the perfect time to come alongside them, love on them, and unapologetically teach them perspective in an age appropriate manner. And if his or her demanding outbursts continue, it’s time to take a few of your child’s luxuries and give them away to someone in need. Be relentless with this issue. It’ll be worth it in the years to come.

We can learn to be content with much or with little when we live with open hands and a heart that trusts in God. He gives. He takes away. He’s always watching out for us. And He loves u s beyond words. Besides, as the old song reminds us, this world is not our home. We’re just passing through.

Indonesian Shadow Puppet Performance

Yesterday, our students were joined by Cadell Primary School and Blanchetown Primary School students to watch an Indonesian Shadow Puppet performance by puppeteer Sumardi. Sumardi comes from Central Java and is travelling around Australia performing at various schools. During the performance, the children were able to see the play as well as behind the scenes (including how the puppeteer creates the movement and music of the puppet). Here are two student reflections:

“I really enjoyed the Indonesian Shadow Puppet play. It was really good and clever, also funny. I liked looking at the shadow puppets from different sides, also watching how Sumardi did it.” Nicola.

“I enjoyed the show that Sumardi did because we got to see how the show ran on both sides. I learnt that 1 puppet takes 1 year to make and that some performers stay up for 9 hour a night. Sumardi came from Indonesia and he had a helper named Thomas.“ Mishael

Corner of Peace

Before coming to school I read a scripture which led me to consider both the power of ‘words’ and the power of ‘trust’ - both thoughts inextricably knit together in the same paragraph.

I was reading about when the Roman Centurion, himself a man commanding power, was requesting healing for his orderly. He said to Jesus “Rather if you will only give the command my orderly will recover….” He did not feel that he was worthy of an actual visit to his home. Jesus commended him with high praise saying “I tell you I have not found any-one in Israel with such trust” His trust was rewarded and his orderly was made immediately – no visit needed.

It is often we as parents, grandparents or caregivers can learn a praiseworthy trust from the children entrusted to our care. We need only to speak the words - it may be in the form of a promise, or an assurance or a word of comfort and promise of support for example – and the child trusts that this is exactly how it will be. The little child may only have been with us a few short years, but he or she does not hesitate to trust that the spoken word is already as good as fulfilled. Other people, however, who may have known us for many years or have been given experience of our reliability, may often require further assurance or proof that the words will really be accomplished in their full intent. On the positive side of things we find comfort in the fact that there are however people in our lives who do display that trust in us.

May you be blessed with many such precious people in your life.

God bless,

Moira

Students of the Week Teaching children about our Learner Profiles; Inquirer, Caring, Balanced, Knowledgeable, Risk - Taker, Communicator, Reflective, Open – Minded, Thinker and Principled provides them with the tool kit for successfully relating with others. As a way of celebrating the demonstration of these principles by students, staff have elected these students this week.

6/7 Class

Inquirer - Ashley Ebert. Ashley is a keen inquirer, eager to learn about his surroundings and the world.

Reflective - Darrian Wilson. Darrian has reflected on the past term and set some good goals for the next few

weeks.

4/5 Class

Principled - Will Kroehn. Will has shown he is a principled learner by beginning tasks quickly last week and

achieving an awesome whole page of writing in his narrative story!

Principled - Caitlyn Watkins. Caitlyn showed she is a principled learner last week by using her class time wisely

and freely continuing her narrative story in her own playtime. Excellent work Cailtyn!

2/3 Class

Risk-Taker - Felicity Arnold. Felicity was a Risk - Taker when she volunteered to speak in front of the school

during Chapel.

Principled - Lilli Hull. Lilli is always honest and gives her best effort in all that she does.

R/1 Class

Inquirer — Charlotte Werner. Charlotte was an Inquirer when she was able to construct appropriate questions

about a family member and their growing up. Well done Charlotte!

Risk Taker — Courtney Wood. Courtney demonstrated being a Risk - Taker when performing in front of everyone

at “Music is Fun”. Great to see Courtney!

Reception Class

Inquirer - Abbigail Neal. Abbigail was inquiring about kangaroos when we were thinking about questions and

how to use them.

Thinker – Christian Mitolo. Christian was a good thinker when he thought of his own questions to ask. Well done

Christian. Good thinking!

Prayers Ask God to be with the Do family

as they settle into life with their new family member, Alexander.

Ask God to be with the Choir students as they travel to Berri tomorrow for their next combined cluster rehearsal.
