Teacher and Principal Employment Negotiations Paid Union Meetings
The situation between the Ministry of Education and Teacher union remains
unresolved. There will be a nationwide round of paid union meetings next week
and our staff will meet on Thursday 9 May. Whilst these meetings will take
place during school time we will be able to manage the students at the school so
there will be no need for the students to leave school.
The intention of these meetings are to get a report back on the outcomes of
any negotiations, and if they remain unsatisfactory talk together about how we
collectively shift this position. This may mean a vote on strike action if that is
necessary.
CHEESE ROLLS CHEESE ROLLS An order form has been sent home with the
eldest child of each family.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL FOR TERM 2 2019
OUR BIG TOPIC THIS TERM IS CHANGE
Attached to this newsletter are the dates of significance for the term.
Jane Culhane is on sabbatical leave this term and we wish her well for
her study and refreshment leave.
In her absence Nikola Vincent will be the Acting Principal and is happy
to be contacted by email or by making an appointment at the office.
ELECTIONS FOR NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES
This term there are elections for a new Board of Trustees for our school. Parents and
caregivers are asked to do two things; consider carefully if this is a role you would like to
undertake for our school and if so put your name forward, and secondly to make sure you
take the opportunity to have your say in the election to be held later in the term.
School boards play a critically important role in New Zealand’s schools and by extension, the
wider community. This year we are encouraging people to step forward for their children,
grandchildren and community to make a difference. To find out more, ask a current board
member;
Julie Pratt, Fiona Cameron, Jason Hampton, Quentin Cavanagh, Claire Carren and Jess
Howard to learn more about the role of a school trustee. Kōrari is a programme designed for
parents who have never been on a school board and would like to learn about the role of a
trustee.

What I enjoy most about being a trustee at Waimataitai School is working alongside the other
Trustees and school management. We meet about 3 times a term to discuss and decide on
issues and direction to keep the big machine of Waimataitai School running smoothly. We
look at anything from supporting student achievement to keeping a healthy happy school
environment. It's a great team to be a part of and a real honour to be able to give back to the
school community that has supported my children. Julie Pratt, Board Chair

OCEANS GRIEF AND LOSS PROGRAMME Oceans is a peer support programme for children, youth, and adults who have
experienced loss in their life. The losses covered may come from the death of a
significant person, or your experience of separation/divorce. The focus of this
programme is providing a safe environment for participants to talk about their
loss/es and the change/s that have occurred by meeting once a week (eight-week
children's programme and six-week adult's programme). We have seen many people
go through the programme and have numerous success stories of how it has helped
(Almost 400 since Oceans started in 2006).
