Needs, response and gaps HEALTH • Dispensaries and health centres are closed in 15 locations in Wajir. In Mandera, a number of health facilities are also reported to have closed. • Children are suffering fever and diarrhoea. • Stock out / shortage of drugs reported in a number of health facilities including those which have been closed. Response • The Kenya Red Cross Society deployed medical teams in both counties, each with Basic and Supplementary Inter-Agency Emergency Health Kits. Interventions required • Continued medical outreach for the displaced and affected house- holds. • Scale-up of disease surveillance, control measures. SHELTER AND NFIS • In Wajir over 50 houses burned, 100 houses looted. • More than 12,500 families displaced in the two counties. • In Mandera, host families are facing severe burden with some households hosting up to five families. Response • KRCS has distributed 500 standard NFIs kits to displaced house- holds in Mandera. 218 standard NFI kits have been distributed in Wajir County. • UNICEF has donated a further 250 kits. Interventions required • Additional support in shelter and NFI required. WASH • Water scarcity is in most affected areas, as surface points failed to recharge as a result of failed rains. • Major sanitation problems reported in affected areas. Interventions required • Up-scaling of hygiene and sanitation promotion services. • Construction of emergency latrines in affected areas. • Water trucking to water stressed areas and provision of potable water to affected households. EDUCATION • Primary and secondary schools closed in affected areas. Over 50 per cent of primary school children in Tarbaj district in Wajir are out of school. 35 schools closed due to clashes in Mandera. An additional six schools relocated. • Constrained facilities in host schools. Response • Absorption of affected students to existing host schools. Interventions required • Materials to set up temporary learning spaces. County Governments of Wajir and Mandera are working with Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) and other humanitarian partners to deliver assistance to those displaced and affected by the clashes. FOOD SECURITY • Pre-existing food insecurity is high in the affected areas, mainly due to failure of the 2013 Short Rains (Oct-Dec) and the poor performance of the 2014 Long Rains (March - May). The conflict has further exacerbated food insecurity for the affected families. Response • 295,000 people already targeted under the WFP PRRO are receiving assistance in Wajir and Mandera Counties. • Additional food assistance has been provided by the County Governments of Wajir and Mandera to the affected families but more is needed.
