The great mountain chain which unites the Mediterranean and the Atlantic is in reality a collection of sierras, some of them with peaks over 3000 metres high.

Of very different geological composition, each sierra has it’s own appearance. A central axis exists, formed by great granite peaks modelled by ancient glaciers, escorted by a margin of limestone relief of small valleys cut off between cliff-faces.

Unlike the rest of the Pyrenees, in the Vall d’Aran the Garona rises, a river which reaches the Atlantic. This orientation meant for a long time, isolation during the long winter months of the Pyrenees, to the extent that this area speaks the aranès, a language of the Gascoigne group

Following this same distribution, the alpine parts covered in snow for the best part of the year, follow a path through the woods of conifers, beeches and birch as we descend and in the limestone parts, the oaks and holm oaks, these now influenced by the Mediterranean.

All these mountains still conserve ancient names, among which we highlight Basque and Celt, but in contrast the names of the villages scattered around are modern, well into the first millenium. Among the rooftops of these villages and hamlets, a Romanesque bell tower always stands out which speaks to us of a fundamental era for understanding the history of the so-called Old Catalonia.

This extensive history and the distance has made for an important cultural font and traditions, many of which are still maintained and which we can live in the fiestas and popular celebrations.

Walking through the Pyrenees allows us to enjoy the spectacle which can be seen from its peaks, but also allows us to relive our ancient history and live first hand some of these thousand-year old traditions.

Trekking around Aigüestortes National Park: Aran Valley, Boí Valley, Àneu Valleys, Estany de Sant Maurici

Go trekking without a backpack to fully enjoy The Pyrenees. We will walk along traditional paths that connected valleys, the ones that surround Aigüestortes National Park nowadays. Medieval villages, World Heritage Romanesque churches, forests, rivers, lakes and high mountain fauna. El Parc Natural del Cadí - Moixeró

The Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park is a mountain park. In the Cadí, heights vary between 800m at the bottom of the valleys and 2,648m at the highest point and the mountain sides form sharp cliffs with almost vertical walls, deep valleys and abrupt canals. The Moixeró sierra ends in the High Peaks of the Moixeró and extensive forest areas stand out with places like the Pi (Pine) Valley or the Font Llebrera. Among the fauna, the chamois, roe deer, deer, wood grouse, golden eagle or the bearded vulture stand out. In Spring, the flora (gentiana, alpenrose, autumn crocus etc) covers the fields and in the Autumn the river bank trees (alder, poplar, rowan etc) make a symphony of colours.

- Excursion to the Pi Valley, circular route from Cal Trisca to discover the sub-alpine dwellings formed from thick woods of red and black pine, as well as the Roca Foradada (rock with a hole in it), the emblem of the omnipresent limestone formation of the sierra.

- Ascend to the top of Comabona (2.547m), the most easterly peak of the sierra, from Prat d’Aguiló (Eagle Field) (2.037 m). We suggest going down following the Camí dels Segadors (Reapers’ path) which takes us to the village of Nas.

- Excursion to the valley of Llosa following the Camí dels Bons Homes (Cathar route).

- This valley allows us to enjoy a full frontal view of the whole sierra.

- Climb to the top of the Penyes Altes (2.276 m), the highest point of the Moixeró, with fantastic views of the Pyrenees.

New Catalonia, historically, is the land south of the river Llobregat which was for nearly 4 centuries under Arab domination, until well into the 13th century. The river Ebro, one of the main rivers of the Iberian peninsula, is a primordial element within this space, and crosses the group of coastal sierras of middling height which accompany the sea, along its whole length.

Southern Catalonia is so varied, with diverse and fascinating landscape in such a small territory, which make it unique and different to the north. Highly diverse nature reserves, stunning unknown spots, amazing cultural heritage, thousand-year old traditions, delicious locally grown and handcrafted products, warm and welcoming accommodations,...

The mountains of Prades, the Sierra of Montsant, the Sierra of Llabería, Cardó and els Ports, are also the name of the natural parks which testify to the good state of conservation and also the fragility of these areas.

They are many, the names and events which talk to us of the past and which we find among us. The main one, the Ebro, with reference to the Ibers, villages which came into contact with the Phoenician, Greek and then Roman voyages, but also we can find villages with names of Arab peoples and of Christians arrived from afar and who established themselves in the south of Catalonia.

During the 12th and 13th centuries the military orders like the Hospitallers and Templars defended this frontier. Later, deforestation of the interior of the Ebro valley in the 15th and 16th centuries favoured the formation of a Delta at the mouth of the Ebro and

which we find today. The wars of the Spanish succession revolutionised these mountains which argued between Carlist and liberal parties. Finally the Ebro became the backdrop for one of the most cruel battles of the Spanish

civil war, or as those who know say, the first battlefield of the Second World War.

To get close to the South of Catalonia a special sensitivity is needed, which will be recompensed in writing, once steeped in the history, the landscape and the gentility of the people we find while enjoying our excursions

gr175 - the cistercian route

The GR 175, the Cistercian Route, forms part of the large European network of signposted footpaths and it is the only trail linking the three most outstanding Cistercian Order monasteries in Catalonia. The monasteries of Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges are located in the inland regions of Alt Camp, Conca de Barberà and Urgell respectively.

The route is circular with a total of 105 km and 108 km for cyclists. There are 4 variants in the most difficult for transit riders. It is all well-signposted with the usual red and white GR blazes and waymarked posts showing additional information on each site and its height. The path is also well-conditioned with railings, handrails and steps where necessary to ensure a safe and comfortable hike.

The Cistercian Route is suitable for anyone who is used to hiking, since it does not entail anything harder than some moderate slopes

and the distance itself. You can do it in as many stages as you like, always taking into account how long you can spend on it, what you are aiming at and how fit you are.There are some striking experiences to be enjoyed along the way, such as evening prayers at Poblet accompanied by the monks’ canticles following a superb walk over the wooded hills of Prades - Paratge de Poblet; the idyllic approach to Vallbona de les Monges through the vineyards of La Conca and the fields of L’Urgell, which complements perfectly the nuns’ contemplative Vespers; or a hike along the rugged ridge of El Cogulló and the contrasting flatlands of L’Alt Camp to get to the impressive monastery of Santes Creus. There is still much to see, ably brought alive by a multi-lingual dramatic audiovisual installation, and English-speaking guides who will relate the medieval legends of the monastery. You are bound to enjoy all of these experiences, which you will only find along the Cistercian Route.The GR 175, the Cistercian Route, is more than just a footpath, it is the link between the three most outstanding monasteries of the Cistercian Order in Catalonia, a walk through the history of its towns, the close-up to some man-modelled lands and some pristine

Ideal for trekking and in some cases climbing which can be found all around the Priorat geography.The Consell Comarcal (regional council) of Priorat has created a network of paths made up of old livestock routes, rail tracks, paths and also carriage lanes and more recent agricultural trails. A network which permits us to discover the region from north to south,

from east to west, linking each and every one of our villages. Paths which in many cases had been abandoned and engulfed by vegetation and now recovering their original use. They say that the paths are the sons of memory, which keep the secrets of history. The paths of the wine of Priorat are the paths where the life, work and desires of this region travelled for centuries. They talk of a prosperous region, converted into a sea of vineyards, but also of the tragedy of the fil•loxera, of the hard and difficult years too.. They are paths which talk after a time, of the reemergence of the hand of quality, character and passion.

As well as reliving the past, the old paths invite us to live a more vital present, more immediate. This is about offering a taste, on foot, slowly, the air which the vines breathe from this so special land. The region gives as a present to everyone, its paths which grant the privilege of capturing the invisible, intangible essence. And those who have tried it assure us that after their return, they have re-found this essence in every glass of wine

Night walk - from earth to sky

Excursion from Lloar to Damunt Roca via the Coll de les Bassetes path. A walk through vineyards and lands of colour, changing textures and wide vistas. A path, long in existence and restored recently, which climbs and then descends, while the changing light of sunset and nighttime offers us far and near sights o fan impressive horizon. As the light fades we arrive at the Agnès de Cervera cellar where we can taste some of their wines while enjoying the clear night sky of the gentle nights of the Priorat. We will end the day with a cold supper in the courtyard of el Perxe, where we will sleep, until the next morning starts with a hearty breakfast.

The Green Way of the Val de Zafán

The ZAFÁN VALLEY GREENWAY, which is approximately 130 km long, joins Tortosa with Alcañiz or La Puebla de Hijar following the old route of the railway line. In order to provide the information, we have divided the Greenway into 4 imaginary sections that correspond to the territories they cross along the route. In reality, you will find a fantastic linear route perfect for cycling and exploring different places.With a changing landscape and a gentle profile suitable for all kinds of visitor, the Greenway also connects us to two of the most enigmatic Natural Parks in Catalonia; both spectacular but also very different from each other; the Els Ports Natural Park, a mountainous region with peaks reaching to 1,500 metres high and the Delta Natural Park, a vast expanse of land that has for thousands of years been reclaimed from the sea by the force of the Ebro River.You will see that there are a large number of tunnels to be found along the route and they form part of the adventure that the Zafàn Valley Greenway has to offer. We call Central Catalonia the land found separated from the coastline by the coastal sierras and also far from the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees. This zone includes in its interior gentle hills tapestried by a sea of woods among wide horizons broken only by the three massifs of Montseny, Sant Llorenç del Munt and the mountain of Montserrat.

The geological origin of the last two gives them a singular appearance, of blocks and rounded peaks as if overhanging the land. This is Montserrat, the heart of Catalonia and the chosen place of hermits to retire to, but also for the building of the sanctuary of Montserrat, centre of popular devotion, loved by all Catalonia.

These undulating extensions were the first frontier of the 10th century and have witnessed key events in the history of Catalonia like the battles against the

Napoleonic troops at the beginning of the 19th century and which led later to the three Carlist wars, guerilla wars which spread over the whole area called “the mountain”. Medieval villages at the edge of streams separated by great extensions of woodland and fields of cereal watched by hundred-year old ‘masias’ also created their own legends, like that of the witches and the bandits.

The proposals in this area combine always the feeling of welcome in the lowlands with the feeling of wide open space once the top of the mountains are reached. This serene and peaceful space, despite appearances, is a very short distance from the main city of Catalonia: Barcelona.

This province is a synthesis of the ‘sea and mountain’ dish which combines the produce of the sea and land.

Triangular in form, the Girona Pyrenees with some peaks which reach higher than 2500 metres , progressively declines in height approaching the Mediterranean and with surrounding green fields gives way to the busy and active valleys.

The numerous mountain passes, passable all year round, have been used from time immemorial as an entrance way to the peninsula by different cultures, armies and novelties, but also as a place of refuge or exchange.

The name of Costa Brava, is quite modern, from the beginning of the 20th century and denotes the hilly coast covered in pine where the little inlets occur between cliffs. In its’ most meridional extreme, there is the Massif

of the Cap de Creus, the place where the Pyrenees touch the Mediterranean. The lively touristic and fishing villages combine with hamlets of medieval origin.

In the centre of this triangle is Girona, the second city of Catalonia and with an interesting historical centre and strong commercial activity.

Three regions, one sole network of paths

The Garrotxa is considered to be the best example of volcanic landscape on the Iberian Peninsula, with a total of 40 volcanic cones, almost all covered in forest and created 11 million years ago. It is one of the most interesting volcanic areas in Europe with ancient craters, lava fl ows and spectacular basaltic lava. These geological formations allowed for the creation of their own ecosystems which are the origin of the different microclimates and the appearance of different types of deciduous forest.

The Ripollès, situated inland, is a key area for understanding the history of Catalonia, with important expressions of art and culture, where we fi nd diverse Romanesque churches and monasteries.

The Alt Empordà is the most northerly coast of Catalonia and is where we fi nd thress natural parks: Cap de Creus, Albera and Aiguamolls (Marshlands) of the Empordà. In addition, there is Figueres and Cadaques, two of the three pillars of the ‘Dalí Triangle’, areas of the Costa Brava which inspired the master of surrealism and where we can enjoy his works through museums and monuments.

refugis del torbRefugis del Torb is a 5-7 days long high mountain trek which joins the most emblematic places of this part of the Pyrenees range, such as its two main peaks: Puigmal (2.910 m high), in the Spanish side, and Canigó (2.784

Torb Altitude (108 km and 8.200 m of cumulative ascent): 7 days, 7 summits. The proposal includes all stages of Torb Standard, but extending them with ascents to several peaks (Bastiments, Puig de la Collada Verda, Serra Gallinera, Noucreus, Noufonts), with two additional stages to climb to the summit of Puigmal (2,910 m) and to Pica del Canigó ( 2,784 m), for a total of seven days. The two most emblematic peaks of the Eastern Pyrenees linked by a circular trek that allows the discovery of singular places of the mountaineering tradition of Vall de Nuria: Coma de Vaca, Ulldeter, Pla Guillem, Mentet or Carançà and watch them from the best peaks.

The Great Water Ways

The abundance of springs of mineral water, rivers, streams, thermal outlets and the presence of the Costa Brava makes water the key to interpreting the landscape and the history of the Selva.The Great Ways of the water are a network of tracks for walking and cyclo-tourism of more than 300km, which communicate all the municipalities of the Selva, to thoroughly enjoy the land.Marked and documented routes, classified by the degree of difficulty.
