WALKSIDE BY

ROVS PROJECT SCOUTS OF THE WORLD AWARD VOLUNTARY

SERVICE

1.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND

The team consists of Rover Scouts from various rover crews

throughout Malaysia. Based on our diverse backgrounds, we believe

the project initiated by our effort will give a long-term impact on our

targeted community. The project namely as „WalkSide by Rovs

Project‟ is a voluntary service project to improve several

environmental conditions that have been polluted by human nature.

In conjunction with Rovers Centenary 100 Years, we are trying to

provide our service and contribute to a cleaner environment through

supporting the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as well as Love Earth

Plastic Bottle Cap project.

2.0 PROJECT MECHANISM

The system that combines the bottle caps collected and affixed in

concrete to be used as a pedestrian path for consumer convenience

and ensures that the concrete is solid for a long time.

3.0 OBJECTIVES

Minimization of waste generation and promotion of the 3R

(reduce, re-use and recycle) concept

To improve the quality of life, starting from native citizens.

Raise community awareness and standards of health through

health education and promotion.

4.0 THE PROJECT SITE

JALAN MESRA, DATUK KERAMAT OFF JALAN AMPANG, KUALA LUMPUR

(Behind Embassy of Somalia & Embassy of Cuba)

FIGURE 1 : BEFORE FIGURE 2 : AFTER

The selection of this project site is based on the frequency of residents using idle routes and can be

dangerous to the locals. We received complaints from the public about the pedestrian paths used by

schoolchildren from SMK Seri Ampang and SMK Puteri Ampang to cross the Gombak River to LRT

Datuk Keramat. The route is the only walkway to cross the Gombak River from Ampang or Datuk

Keramat. So we feel the selection of this location is very appropriate for us to implement community

development projects.

To get permission to create this route project. We seek cooperation from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall

namely Director of Infrastructure Department Encik Sulaiman bin Mohamad and also the

authorization from the Kuala Lumpur Land and Mine Office.

To complete this route, we have been working with an engineer specializing in construction, Ms. Noor

Hidayah Che Ismail and she helped us from the beginning until the completion of this project.

Page 13: Walkside by rovs project

This project is entering a cleaning site process before we start the main project. A lot

of trash and a lot wild grass found here, so we need to clean up first. We trimmed a

wild grass, removed the big rocks and collected the trash around the site. This is

another proof that a lot of pedestrians used this trail.

Page 14: Walkside by rovs project

We calculated and sorted the bottle caps according the colours caps because it

easier to us to design the layout of the sidewalk. This bottle caps that we

calculated is not included yet the numbers of group members from EastCoast of

Peninsular Malaysia (Amsyar and Atikah) had collected. The total number that we

achieved to collect is about almost 90,000 thousands bottle caps.

We went to hardware shop for shopping the materials for the project such as 13 cements

bags, 6 1/2 tons sands, wood, etc. We bought those materials at the Yusoff Mohamed

Hardware Store in Kg. Pandan and we thank you to Mr. Yusoff because advised us on

what the needs on preparing the project. We also went to Mr. DIY at Bandar Puteri,

Bangi, Selangor to bought some tools for our main project use such as, scope, boots,

nails, etc.

Page 16: Walkside by rovs project

We have started our main project (build sidewalk using bottle caps). The

process of the built a sidewalk, first of all, we mixing the cement with sand. And

then, we put the mixed cement on the sidewalk. After that, we attach the bottle

caps on cement and press/tap a bottle caps into the cement. Finally, let the

cement dry. Thank you to Mr. Shahrul Nizam and Mrs. Noor Hidayah because

they teach/guide us on how to prepare the mixed cement and the process to

build a sidewalk.

15

Page 17: Walkside by rovs project

We continue our sidewalk project that we dismissed on 26th August 2018. We

started earlier than before (7 am) because that day is Friday. We improved the

quality of the mixture of the cement, we make it smoother because before this

we face a problem the cement dry rapidly. And our improvement works! We able

to arranged the bottle caps closely (before this we handled the problem by

arrange the bottle caps with a big space among them). Happy Independence’s

Day !

Page 18: Walkside by rovs project

We had continue and completed a part of the sidewalk which is the forked road

shown in the picture. We are going to build a small bridge so that people don’t

have to cross the dangerous ditch. We try to do as much as we can do in 7 hours.

Because of the rainy weather, we only completed the fork road. The rest will

continue on 29th September. On weekdays, the road can be seen to be used and

it has been convenient for many students and office workers to walk to LRT Dato

Keramat. Our efforts are not wasted!

7.0 ACHIEVEMENTS

We successfully completed our WalkSide by Rovs Project at Jalan Mesra, Datuk

Keramat Off Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

As project completed, the requirement for the Scout of The World Award which

was SWA Voluntary Service was completed.

We successfully initiated sustainable project which proved to be an alternative

sidewalk for local communities to used it every single day.

We successfully spread out awareness to every school and university that we

campaigned.

The students and local communities were able to learn the new things about

how to be creative on recycling waste.

We gained more knowledge on construction and planning when dealing,

managing and handling the project, we were given advises from various people

on how to to do the construction and on making sidewalk.

The success of our project made the local communities realized that the project

was so good and need to expand more especially on rural areas. Then, we also

received invitation from Pramuka Scout in Kuala Lumpur to join us along on our

last final touch up day and not to forgetting our scout friends from Mauritius

and Maldives which also help us to spread out the awareness campaign.

9.0 CONCLUSION

The project objectives were successfully achieved. Our sustainable project will

become the landmark and provide the long-lasting benefits to the local communities.

We believed it also will become the platform for the volunteers to serve the

community in creative and innovative ways.

10.0 FUTURE IMPROVEMENT

Our project successfully introduce an alternative way to recycling and reused waste

which is plastic bottle caps. However, there are many pedestrians that we can be

done using the bottle caps. It is all depend on creativity and out of box thinking. In

fact, there a lot more of potential creative ideas to be implement just we need to

discover and keep a high motivation to do it. Last but not least, and experience will

become a good leader will find a good system from the improvement of failure trial.
