Thomas Burns, Sr. was a potter who bought property near present Ironwood Point to set up a pottery. Thomas Burns, Jr. (his son) also worked at the pottery. When the son was found dead from a gunshot wound after the two Thomas’ ate lunch together, it launched an investigation that resembled a modern episode of CSI and culminated in a very high profile trial in Pike County. Histor ic Preser vat ion Easement Moni tor ing at Nemanie Vi l lage

In June, Wal lenpaupack His tor ica l Society ’s His tor ic Preservat ion Easement Commit tee conducted i t s annual moni tor ing of the h i s tor ic preservat ion easement at Nemanie Vi l lage in Paupack. Since November 2005, WHS has been respons ible for moni tor ing the 0 .40 acre parce l at Nemanie, ver i fy ing that the property remains undis turbed. The pur pose o f the easement i s to ensure that the h i s tor ic and archaeologica l features o f the property be preserved and protected in the ir current s tate, as the property possesses h i s tor ic and archaeologica l va lues inc luding the presence of prehis tor ic Nat ive American ar t i fact s, which according ly are o f g reat importance to the nat ion, s tate and township, and i t s people. Due to the quant i ty o f Nat ive American ar t i fact s found prev ious ly at that locat ion and reported to the Pennsy lvania His tor ica l and Museum Commiss ion (PHMC), an easement was required by PHMC in order for the owner to proceed wi th lo t subdiv i s ion surrounding the archaeologica l s i te. WHS was g ranted the easement in 2005 because the organizat ion i s a publ ic ly supported 501(c ) (3 ) , reg i s tered wi th the Bureau of Char i table Organizat ions o f the Pennsy lvania Department o f State, and has a pr imary pur pose in the preservat ion, protect ion and enhancement o f h i s tor ic ar t i fac t s, bui ld ings and lands. Photographed are Jon Tandy and Ann Wiedenman, members o f the His tor ic Preservat ion Easement Commit tee.
