Hello Mustangs!
I hope 2019 is off to a good start for you! As a reminder, second quarter is about to end. There will be no school on
February 1 and February 4 so that teachers have time to complete their grades and plan for next semester. We will see
everyone again on February 5, the first day of third quarter.
Next week, on February 8, we will begin our annual PALS fund raiser. Please support our school by helping your child
sell their cookie dough. All orders and money are due on February 25, and the students who sell 20 items or more will
win a free limo ride and pizza party!
The next thing I want to make sure that you are aware of is that OAKS state testing begins in April and will extend
through the end of May. These tests are designed to measure the school’s effectiveness in helping our students master
grade level standards in reading and math. They also help us know when students are in need of more intensive
interventions. During testing weeks, it is extremely important that your child gets enough rest and eats healthy meals,
especially at breakfast. It is also important that your child not be absent during their assigned testing weeks. Please
communicate directly with your child’s Language Arts and Math teachers if you have questions about the testing
schedule. Oregon state law requires all districts to inform parents that a form is available from the Oregon Department of Education
that provides the opportunity to opt your child out of the OAKS/Smarter Balanced assessments. The form must be filed
annually and is available in 8 languages. Should you choose to opt your child out of the exam, then please fill out the form
found on this website http://www.reynolds.k12.or.us/district/2016-17-parent-exemption-guidelines and submit it to the
District Testing Coordinator. The form must be turned in prior to your student beginning the test. If the form is received
after your student begins testing, they will not be required to finish the exam. However, the state still requires that
all incomplete tests be counted and scored. Finally, the most important thing you will need to know is that spring conferences are quickly approaching. They will take
place during the second week of March. Just as they were in the fall, the spring conferences at Walt Morey will be
student-led. This means that your student will be the one explaining his/her academic growth to you. Your student will
lead the conference in an area where his/her homeroom teacher will be present. Because teachers are not the ones doing
all the explaining, there will be more than one conference running at a time. Once you complete the student led portion of
the conference, you are encouraged to meet with all of your student’s teachers to talk about any questions or concerns you
may have. Maps with teacher room assignments will be provided to you when you arrive for your conference. Your student’s homeroom teacher will be sending home conference invitations on February 19. It is important that you
return the form as soon as possible to secure your preferred date and time. See you all at conferences! Sincerely, Tanya Pruett Principal

Hola Mustangs!
Sinceramente,
Tanya Pruett- Directora
