The Wanstead Village Directory proudly supports local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Our High Street is proof enough of the individuality that independent retailers can bring to a town. Help us help these businesses by mentioning the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts.

The Wanstead Village Directory is published monthly by Marquis IT LTD and distributed to homes in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook. Additional copies are available from local public service locations and shops on and around Wanstead High Street.

Founded in 2006 by Charlotte Thompson and Dean McGlinchey.

If you are a business that is based in Wanstead, or has a presence in the local community, then we can help you get your message across to our readers. The deadline for inclusion in the April 2015 edition is 19 March 2015.

Lee Marquis, Editor

Welcome...

Calling local residents...

A note to businesses...

Every now and then, I will discover something about the readers of this publication that will take me by surprise, or a certain story will come along that gives me cause to pause and contemplate it a little longer than most. You would be forgiven for thinking, for example, that all our readers share a postcode, or at least postcodes from the same London borough. And whilst I can reassure our advertisers that the vast majority of copies remain in the local vicinity, a handful, it would seem, refresh readers in destinations other local magazines can't reach (a personal welcome to Margaret Rowe in Higher Tolcarne, Cornwall, who requests a copy of the Wanstead Village Directory from her niece in Wanstead every month).

As well as my recent and flattering discovery of our regional readers, there have been a handful of stories in recent issues that have been equally inspirational. I refrain from identifying any such past articles here for fear of giving an unjust summary, but I will highlight the article in this edition that has prompted this month's welcome address. It is the obituary of Billie Figg (see page 20), a Wanstead resident who died recently. As an avid campaigner for the preservation of Wanstead's character, Billie was forthright in her views of the local area. Her husband, Jack, whose obituary we published last year, was equally passionate about local issues and together the couple were a force for developers and planners to reckon with.

I had several conversations with Billie over the years on various Wanstead-related issues. During our first meeting – at an art trail function several years ago – she was keen to discuss the Wanstead Village Directory. She commented on the 'light' typeface that was being used at the time and suggested a bolder font would be easier on the eye, especially her ageing eyes (to paraphrase). Her sincere interest struck a chord and to this day the words on these pages are 'heavier' as a direct result of Billie's input. Granted, it's no great tribute, just one of the many ways she will be remembered.

Proposals for the future of Wanstead Park were published last month by the City of London, who, along with various partners, have been working with LDA Design to develop a way forward for the historic site. Residents are now invited to review the plans for enhancing the park's features in a public consultation that runs until 8 March. Paul Thomson, Superintendent of Epping Forest, said: "With the support of our partners, a lot of work has gone in

to developing our understanding of Wanstead Park and the important challenges it faces. We are now

at a stage where we want to share our thoughts with the local community… and hope that as

many as possible use this chance to help us shape the future of Wanstead Park." Visit wavidi.com/parkplan

Wanstead's Local ForumThe first Redbridge Council Local Forum in Wanstead enjoyed a healthy turnout at the library last month. The Local Forums, which provide an opportunity for residents to raise issues with councillors, take place monthly at venues across the borough. Topics raised during the meeting included the lack of children's play facilities in Aldersbrook, a complaint about two-way traffic on Nightingale Lane, concerns over the number of local roads used by learner drivers and a discussion about landlords and housing.

A news-themed poetry event will take place at Aldersbrook Library this month. Poetry on the Brook aims to give people the chance to read both their own original poetry and some of their personal favourites by other poets, although those wishing to just listen are also welcome. "We hope at some point to publish an anthology of the original poems that are read out," said organiser Tracey Adebowale-Jones. Attendees are encouraged to bring refreshments to share at the free event, which takes place on 24 March from 8pm.

Wanstead RFC player David Yems is in the midst of a six marathon, six nations challenge, raising money for a children's charity. Having already completed the Lisbon and Dublin Marathons in the autumn, David's running schedule for the next three months includes Rome

on 22 March, Paris on 12 April, London on 26 April and Edinburgh on 31 May. David, who plays in the prop position at Wanstead, is hoping to raise £1,600 for Whizz-Kidz, who provide customised mobility equipment to disabled children. Visit wavidi.com/yems

The Thin White Duke comes to Aldersbrook

To help fund this year's Music in Wanstead Park, a music night featuring six-piece David Bowie tribute band The Thin White Duke will take place at St Gabriel's Church hall in Aldersbrook on 7 March (tickets £10). This year's festival in the park takes place on 18 July and members

of the community are invited to take part. "If you are a budding musician or member of a local band, please apply to be part of the programme," said Gill James of the Aldersbrook Families Association, which organises the annual event. Visit aldersbrook.info

Wanstead Playground Association's campaign to raise £13,000 to upgrade the playground on Wanstead High Street is enjoying a huge amount of local support, with a crowdfunding appeal that was launched last month raising over £5,000 from more than

75 supporters in the first week. Fundraising events planned for this month include a Frozen sing-a-long on 7 March at The Duke and a special Wanstead Comedy Club night on 27 March at Wanstead Golf Club, featuring Brett Goldstein. Visit wavidi.com/wpa

Wanstead collectors needed for Marie Curie appeal

The Wanstead Marie Curie fundraising group are looking for volunteers to help with local street collections for their annual Great Daffodil Appeal, which takes place this month. "Most people will do a two-hour shift, but any amount of time is appreciated," said

group co-ordinator Jill Playford. Collections are planned for 7 and 14 March outside the Co-op and along Wanstead High Street. Last year, the group – who meet monthly at Wanstead United Reformed Church – collected £1,000 on the High Street. Call 020 8989 2193

WWI pop-up library tourA storyteller who has developed heritage presentations for authorities across London will be creating an interactive show for Year 5 and 6 students in Redbridge as part of a First World War centenary pop-up library that will be touring the borough in May and June. John Kirk – who also runs drama workshops for young people – hopes to 'reflect the lives of previous residents and share some of the untold stories from the borough'. The project has received £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Call 020 8708 2409

Mayors and leaders from Barking and Dagenham, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest met last month to build the case for a devolution settlement for a region of London bigger than any UK city. The Local London: Driving Growth through Devolution conference, which took place at Stratford Old Town Hall, explored the growth opportunities and challenges facing the nine boroughs, which have a collective population of more than 2.5 million.

Devolution proposal

Eastside Community Heritage – a charity which aims to document the lives of 'ordinary' people from the local area – is seeking participants for a history project entitled 'Redbridge: London or Essex?' Culturally, there has been some dispute over whether

certain towns within Redbridge are in London or Essex and the project is keen to hear the views of those who live in the borough. The project is in acknowledgement of the 50th anniversary of the 1965 amalgamation of the boroughs. Call 020 8553 3116

Family history club to explore the 'Victorian way of death'

Photographers at local club aim for the stars

A highly-regarded astrophotographer gave a presentation on photographing the night sky to members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society (WWPS) last month. Nik Szymanek, who has written a book on astrophotography called Infinity Rising,

explained to the group how he obtains spectacular photographs of stars and galaxies, even in light-polluted London. The WWPS – which was founded in 1893 – meet on the first and third Monday of the month at Wanstead House. Visit wavidi.com/wwps

This month's meeting of the East of London Family History Society at Wanstead Library will look at the 'Victorian way of death' in a presentation by historian Tom Doig. The talk – which will take place on 25 March, from 7pm – will consider the

Victorian funeral and its origins: black-plumed horses, walking 'mutes', the passing-bell, sin-eaters, closed curtains, men removing their hats as the cortège passes by and other aspects that are less-frequently observed in modern times. Call 020 8508 2403

Kevin Murphy Wanstead Fish

I first took an interest in fish on holiday, at my dad's elbow in a fish market in Peterhead in Scotland. I was only eight, but was

fascinated by the hustle and bustle, men with boxes on their heads, shouting their wares so early in the morning. We bought mackerel and Dad seemed to know just what he wanted. He even let me gut it! After that, wherever we went on holiday round the UK, we went to fish markets, and to use a terrible pun, I was hooked!

Born in the very early sixties to parents who were both teachers, I can't profess to being a model child. Living in Worcester, I regularly got caught scrumping fruit, earning clips round the ear. I got the cane at school when I was caught smoking but the 'pleasure' of the smoking wasn't really worth the pain of the cane – we could only afford Players No. 10!

I headed off to uni in Liverpool, hair-dyed punkish orange or green when I went to Ramones and Undertones' gigs. I came out with a 2:2 in French, which took me to France and Italy for a few years to work as a travel rep, run a windsurfing school and play rugby for a village near Toulouse. I had started playing at 11 and I think running away from fruit farmers helped my speed – the French farmers on the opposing team wanted to batter me, if they could catch me, because of my nationality.

Back to the UK, and I'll gloss over the years spent in IT in the City, designing systems to calculate CGT, amongst other things. Deadly dull! Post-rugby days, my exercise of choice was cycling and swimming, and I cycle-commuted from Leytonstone, always wearing shorts, whatever the weather. I still loved a fish diet and frequented the old Billingsgate, where the vibe was amazing, especially at 4.30am. My dad's knowledge served me well. Then I met Jane and we set up home together in Wanstead, and it helped that she was, and still is, a pescatarian.

Then redundancy – joy – the world was my oyster. Jane and I had longed for a fishmongers

in the High Street, and in 2013, over Christmas dinner (turbot), the decision was made to take the plunge. I trained for months at Billingsgate and even did a course on smoking (not Players No.10, thankfully).

Since we opened last July, I've aimed to stick to sustainable principles. My main suppliers in Cornwall deal only in Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fish. It's so important we don't strip the seas bare, and I also sell 'discards', which would otherwise have been thrown back dead. In the early days, I couldn't have managed without Billy Sharp's assistance, wisdom and banter, and now we have Sharee Hunte, who is developing into a fantastic fishmonger.

I'm now really enjoying helping customers realise the benefits of undyed smoked haddock, sustainable practices, and healthy food. I've pitched my prices at Waitrose levels, but compared with some supermarkets, the fish hits my slabs much fresher, so tastes better.

Children are fascinated by seeing the whole fish, and older customers love a chat and a new recipe idea. The interaction with people and being part of the local community is so much more satisfying than looking at a computer screen all day. I'm happy, even when I'm asked to find abalone, croaker, garfish or groupers, if not at Billingsgate, then online!

Billie Figg died suddenly on Wednesday 28 January aged 92. Billie wasn't her real name, of course, it was really Cynthia,

but everyone knew her as Billie. Jack, her husband, who died in March 2014, had looked after Billie for some time as she was prone to vertigo attacks, as well as being diabetic.

After Jack's death, everyone was worried that Billie would not be able to look after herself, and so it was suggested that she engage a live-in carer. I had the good fortune to visit Billie on the Tuesday afternoon before she died and spent some two hours with her. I always went a day or so before the monthly Wanstead Society committee meeting to see if there were any points that Billie wished to raise. This was one such occasion.

She was bright as a button and up to the minute with her knowledge of the Wanstead social scene as usual. On this occasion, there was nothing she wished to raise, but we spent the time chatting about this and that anyway. So I was shocked to hear from her carer that she had collapsed the following day. I was on my way out to the committee meeting and so was able to report that she had collapsed. It wasn't until my return that I learnt she had not responded to the paramedic's attention and was pronounced dead at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Billie was passionate about Wanstead and an avid campaigner throughout her life – especially if the subject was the development of a site or building that had some historic significance. Her comments were usually directed through the Wanstead Society, which she and Jack had joined not long after it had been formed. However, as a former journalist, she was not averse to putting pen to paper and firing a warning shot across the bows of any hapless developer, or even to the relevant councillor.

Billie and Jack had many friends and acquaintances in and around Wanstead – built up during their long stay in the area. I believe they

moved to Wanstead some 50 years ago. With her many and varied interests, these friends grew and they cherished the open door approach that Billie and Jack encouraged. They had no children of their own, but everyone came to adopt them as pseudo lovable relatives. They both painted and exhibited their works frequently in local art displays and were always to be seen in and around the High Street.

Billie requested a Woodlands funeral with no attendees. Her ashes will be scattered beside those of Jack.

With the passing of Billie, it seems as though it is the end of an era. Life in Wanstead will certainly not be the same again.

She will be sorely missed.

Billie Figg, a much-loved Wanstead resident who was passionate about the local area, died at the end of January. Without Billie, life in Wanstead will not be the same again, says Geoff Horsnell

It's a cold, bright February morning, and I am in Gezi Park turkish restaurant on Wanstead High Street, opposite tarzy Wood. I am

sitting with Erdogan (aka Eddy), the owner, who immediately summons hot, sweet turkish tea with baklava so fresh it is still warm.

The first impression of Eddy is of a worried man, but it doesn't take long to work out why he is anxious: he wants to please, to make you feel welcome, to be hospitable. When he knows you are happy he beams and the worry disappears, as it does when I relish my pastry.

Having opened quietly in January 2014, Gezi Park is already a firm favourite in the pantheon of great restaurants in Wanstead. It has won early success having been awarded two Guardian national awards (Best International Restaurant and Readers' Choice) and is already in the top echelons of London restaurants on TripAdvisor. Eddy is justifiably proud of this and of his team. He introduces me to Julya, his manager, and she too is warmly keen to please.

I ask Eddy about the choice of restaurant name – it is unusual – and Eddy tells me that the reason he chose Wanstead is its green, villagey feel: "It's London but not London," he says, sweeping his hand to Tarzy Wood across the road, "Gezi Park by a park." He smiles, then becomes more serious and tells me of the 2013 anti-government demonstrations in Gezi Park, Istanbul.

According to Eddy, although initially triggered by the threatened demolition of trees (which triggers memories of George Green in the 1990s), the demonstrations, then riots, came to stand for fundamental freedoms in the face of "bad government". Eight people died and 8,500 were injured, and Eddy very clearly supported the protests. I use the phrase overbearing and heavy-handed politicians, and he agrees. But I am surprised by what comes next.

Eddy stands up and directs me to look at the War Memorial on Tarzy Wood. He describes by

contrast the Turkish 2013 Gezi Park memorial, which consists of names scribbled on pavements, painted stones, and carnations.

By this time, I have been invited to stay to lunch and the signature dish – lamb ribs – arrives. I pick them up to eat, as directed by the menu, and they are gob-smackingly good. I want to bang the table with appreciation, Meg Ryan style.

I ask Eddy about the flavours, the herb mix, and he shakes his head, talking of long-held family secrets before crediting his meat supplier on the taste and texture. I dig into a jewel-coloured pomegranate salad, which is so fresh it bites back. Julya asks if I like my Turkish red wine, and tells me she chooses wines in collaboration with customers, on whom she tries new labels before committing to an order.

As I go to leave, Eddy says he has something to show me, and we cross the road to the War Memorial. He points to a name on the eastern side that reads "P. G. Turk". I'm intrigued and so is he: "I would love to know more about this name, this family, the connection with Turkey," he says, and I'm touched by how important this seems to him. We say our goodbyes, and as Eddy crosses the road back to his restaurant, he says: "This is my Gezi Park now."

When World War I broke out in 1914, Edith Cavell was a 49-year-old hospital matron working in Brussels.

As the Germans rampaged through Belgium and on towards Paris to what they thought would be a quick victory, they left behind them British and French soldiers struggling to reach their own comrades. Left behind the lines was a hospital, of which Edith was in charge, that became a red Cross hospital caring for German and Belgian casualties. the staff were given the chance of safe-passage to return to their home countries. Cavell declined to do so and carried on working there: a decision that was to cost humanitarian Edith her life.

Born in Sewardeston, Norfolk, she had strong religious beliefs, being the daughter of the vicar and part of a loving family. Fluent in French, Edith took a job as a governess in Brussels between 1890 and 1895, but soon after decided to become a nurse, training at the London Hospital, 1896-1901 (only £10 a year), under famous matron, Miss Eva Luckes. In 1897, Edith was seconded to Maidstone to help combat a typhoid fever epidemic. Of 1,700 who were infected, only 32 died. The nurses received the Maidstone Medal – her only award. Edith took various jobs around the country and in 1907 became the matron of the new Berkandael Hospital, Brussels. It was a job she thrived in until 1914.

After the retreat from Mons, word spread among soldiers seeking help that Edith wouldn't turn escapers away. Many were hidden by resistance families as escape lines were established by the Prince and Princess of Croy (the password was 'Yorc' – Croy backwards). Phillipe Baucq organised guides. Soldiers had their wounds dressed, were given money, hot meals, identity papers and clean clothes. Some 200 were able to avoid capture and life as a POW, but her work came to the notice of the German authorities and spies approached Edith seeking help. The penalties for harbouring allied soldiers was extreme: execution by firing squad.

In August 1915, Edith was arrested and put into solitary confinement. Her trial on 11 October lasted barely a day and she, Phillipe and Louise Thuliez were sentenced to death and only due to a last minute reprieve was Louise saved. Edith and Phillipe were shot one after the other on 12 October at the Tyr rifle range, Brussels and buried there. The British government did little to save her – except making her martyrdom part of a strong recruitment campaign.

The night before her execution she wrote her last letter in which she stated her religious beliefs: "Standing as I do in view of GOD and eternity I realize that patriotism is not enough. I must have no HATRED or Bitterness towards anyone." This inscription is on her statue in St Martin's Place in London. After the war, her body was exhumed and brought back for a state funeral and burial at Norwich Cathedral.

One of the first questions I am always asked when instructed on any type of transaction is: "How long will it take?"

there is never a simple answer to this, but what are the main factors to take into account when giving a time estimate?

A straightforward residential conveyance would involve either the sale or purchase of registered land with no other linked transactions, no chain involved, with a cash buyer who does not require a survey, and with solicitors acting for the other side who are equally keen to move matters quickly. Sadly, this combination of factors is rare. What is more likely is that you will have a related sale or purchase and that there will be other people in the chain. Assuming that it all goes smoothly, and particularly that none of the parties in the chain changes their mind and pulls out, a reasonable time frame would be eight to 12 weeks. But who or what are the main culprits for delay in a conveyancing transaction?

Mortgage lenders, who have become increasingly risk-averse since the recession in 2008, are one such culprit. Prior to the financial crisis, mortgages were issued by the more efficient banks and building societies within a couple of weeks. The process is now much slower, and we have seen examples of lenders changing or even withdrawing offers just as we are about to exchange contracts. Our advice is never to exchange without a written mortgage offer.

Chains, which are part and parcel of the house buying and selling process in England and Wales, are another culprit. Because potential buyers are able to make offers on property without any binding legal obligations (or what has in the past been called "subject to contract"), they are not committing to buy the property until all their arrangements, including their survey and mortgage advance, are in place. Buyers and sellers are able to withdraw from the transaction at any point up to exchange – an adverse survey, their inability to obtain a suitable mortgage, or purely on a whim – the list of reasons is endless. Some even threaten to withdraw solely with

the intention of trying to agree an 11th-hour reduction in price.

Mortgage panels are the final culprits worth considering. Where you are getting a mortgage to help you purchase your house or flat, your lender will appoint a firm of solicitors who are on their panel of law firms to act for them. In this way, the lender ensures that their interests are fully protected before releasing the mortgage funds. In the majority of cases, the law firm appointed will be the same firm that you have also instructed for your conveyancing. Where two different firms are acting this will cause delay. Look for a solicitor who is a member of the Law Society Conveyancing Quality Scheme, since it is a scheme recognised by most mortgage lenders.

We all know how stressful moving house can be, not least because of the built-in uncertainties. Buyers and sellers can try to reduce their stress levels by not harbouring unrealistic expectations about how long the process will last. Take a realistic view of an eight- to 12-week period and then you will be delighted if it takes less time.

David Wershof, senior partner at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, takes a look at the common causes of delay when buying or selling a house and advises those involved not to have unrealistic expectations

One of the things I most look forward to each year is the arrival of the first migrant bird of spring. Partly it's the

thought that the newcomer is nearing the end of a journey of thousands of kilometres and I feel privileged to witness that achievement. But it is also exciting because it marks the onset of birdsong, butterflies on the wing, flowering plants, bats appearing at dusk and newts appearing in garden ponds. And there's one more thing: it's hard to predict what the first migrant will be. In the past six years, three different species have claimed the crown: wheatear, blackcap and sand martin, but it's usually the first of this trio.

Many of the new arrivals announce their presence vocally before anyone claps eyes on them. One morning in the last week of March, as if from nowhere because no-one sees their nocturnal arrival, two warblers suddenly sound as if they are everywhere. Blackcaps issue their beautiful fluty song in leafy back gardens and parks and, equally assertive – although musically very different – the repetitive chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff of the bird with the same name can be heard in Wanstead Park and in copses on Wanstead Flats.

Wheatear is usually a good bet for the first long-distance migrant. Typically, the first one will arrive on Wanstead Flats between 15 and 20 March, fresh in from sub-Saharan Africa, but with its journey far from complete. The birds that drop in for a few hours or a day certainly don't breed close to Wanstead and may still have to fly to Scotland or Scandinavia. Nor will they be singing; it is the brilliant white rump of the bird as it flies away that first draws attention to the species. We are lucky to have Wanstead Flats on our doorstep because these little chaps love the place. One day a couple of springs ago, local birders counted 27 of them on the Flats at the same time. And who knows how many went unnoticed?

The other real 'early birds' are sand martins, which last year beat the wheatears in the

race north. Often, the first you know of their presence is some quiet chirruping over one of our lakes, often Alexandra Lake on Aldersbrook Road. Migrating birds materialise out of thin air, catch flying insects for a few minutes, and then disappear as unobtrusively as they arrived. And what of their better-known cousins, the swallows? They usually start to pass through our area a few days or even a fortnight after the sand martins. Last year, the first sand martin was seen on 15 March, but the earliest swallow wasn't sighted until 6 April. From then on, the avian floodgates open, with maybe a few ring ouzels, warblers such as whitethroats, lesser whitethroats and willow warblers, yellow wagtails, house martins, whinchats and more returning to our open spaces. Some stay to breed and others just drop by to feed and rest – and off they go again.

One bird I haven't mentioned is the cuckoo. In years gone by, its familiar song would surely have been heard every spring, but this later spring arrival has not been heard at all locally in two springs out of the last four – not surprising with a 65% fall in its UK population since the 1980s.

Sign of the timesIn the first of a series of articles exploring local biodiversity, Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group takes a look at the avian visitors we can expect to see this month, signalling the start of spring

It was difficult to get Elliot talking when I was interviewing him for this piece. When he did finally open up and start telling me

some of the things he has done in the last few years, it didn't take me long to realise that he has done a tremendous amount for the local community, that he doesn't consider what he has done to be at all special and that there is no way a few hundred words can do it all justice.

I first met Elliot through Creative Bloc. Although technically in Leytonstone, this organisation is more about artists getting together regularly than it is about the area. In it I've met people based in Wanstead, Walthamstow, Newham and as far away as Norfolk. Elliot explains: "Creative Bloc started because when you are freelance you can spend all your time at home. A couple of us had this idea to help us get up early. I'd meet Carne Griffiths at Spoons (Leytonstone) for breakfast. It was a place we had to be up early to get to, and a marker on our daily plans. Sometimes we'd only be there for five minutes, but it set us up. Then we kind of moved it to Costa (Leytonstone) and would see other people using laptops while sitting there, so I started talking to them and it kind of grew. You could walk in, see someone you knew and would be able to leave your stuff when you needed to move. Then I met Sadie Jane Medhurst, who is a poet and said she needed a stimulus or reason to work. From this came the idea to create the group officially, as a way to network, meet like-minded people and set each other realistic targets. Carne suggested we call it Creative Block, Sadie changed the spelling to Bloc and we set it up." Nowadays, there are about 47 members. Anyone rolling up on a Monday morning is likely to meet between four and 12 of the Creative Bloc members, and Creative Bloc members curate and collaborate on exhibitions and all manner of other projects.

However, by far the biggest of Elliot's achievements I know of (there are bound to be more) is what he has done with Star Wars. An enthusiast and collector for many years, while producing a glass engraving of Yoda for Leytonstone Arts Trail, Elliot discovered that Stewart Freeborn (the make-up legend famous for creating Yoda and Chewbacca of Star Wars, as well as working in a host of other epoch-making films) had been born in Leytonstone. This stimulated the creation of six Star Wars shows over a year. Part of one of these was a competition open to all, for which prizes included two genuine pieces of Ewok fur and

display in an exhibition. He also managed to attract a number of Storm Troopers, including three of only six in the world who have the concept designs. These exhibitions attracted a huge number of people (Elliot says there was quite a crush when the Storm Troopers were first seen and coinciding with the Car Free day made it such a successful event that he was awarded a prize for his work). Elliot plans another Star Wars exhibition this year (he says the last ones only delivered 80% of what he wanted), so keep an eye on the Facebook page if you're interested.

Hilary Douse (May 2014's Angel in Wanstead) says: "Elliott is quietly amazing. He puts such a lot into things that make the area a better place to be – not just for the artists but for the community as a whole. The group – Creative Bloc – that he set up with Sadie Medhurst has helped nurture the artistic community and make it thrive. His work on Star Wars brings people into the area that would never normally come and has inspired so many to create and do by just being there and getting things happening!"

That, I think, sums him up.

On the cold afternoon of 7 november 1831 the Metropolitan Police were called to King's College in the Strand

by the college's professor of anatomy. One of London's body snatching gangs had just delivered to him a corpse that was so fresh it left him in no doubt that this was a case of suspicious death, not disinterment. the three-man body snatching gang – John Bishop, thomas Williams and James May – were taken into custody, and the process of mounting a prosecution for murder began.

Since the discovery of Burke and Hare's 16 murders for dissection in Edinburgh just three years earlier, there had been huge fear that a copycat case might emerge, and with the King's College corpse, it became clear that 'burking' had indeed arrived in London.

The corpse of the adolescent boy was rumoured very early on in the police investigation to be that of an Italian child beggar who had gone missing from the London street corners where he could usually be found. These rumours very quickly began to be reported as fact, and the entire inquiry went on to be hindered by a series of half-truths and myths. Just like the Burke and Hare scandal, the Italian Boy case highlights the lives of the victims: the destitute and the homeless, whom no one was likely to miss.

As for the culprits, John Bishop was a 33-year-old villain, who had had a comparatively good start in life when he inherited his father's small business. Powerfully built, he was sarcastic and morose. Greedy for the cash that body snatching could earn, Bishop descended into the trade that most Londoners considered the most villainous and despicable; it was claimed that in his 12-year career he had lifted as many as 1,000 bodies from London burial grounds. When graveyard security tightened in the late 1820s, and opportunities became scarcer, he turned to murder.

Thomas Williams was a young petty thief who had moved in next door to Bishop in Bethnal

Green in the summer of 1831, following his release from Millbank Penitentiary. He quickly took to Bishop's horrible trade.

James May, 30, was a good-looking ladies' man. Like Bishop, he too had a good start in life, privately educated and employed as a clerk. May turned to body snatching and even went so far as to take lodgings overlooking the overcrowded Clement's Lane graveyard off the Strand.

The police investigation was a rather primitive-looking one to our eyes. But detection was at a very early stage in 1831 and the Metropolitan Police had only been in existence for two years.

Two months after the discovery of the boy's corpse, parliament passed the Anatomy Act, which legalised the use of unclaimed pauper bodies in hospitals and workhouses for use by the anatomists, putting an end to the need for body snatchers. In this way, the Italian Boy case changed the course of British history.

The Italian BoyAt this month's Wanstead Historical Society meeting, historian Sarah Wise will be examining the details of the Italian Boy case, a story of murder and grave-robbery in 1830s London

The outcome of the case is revealed in Sarah's book The Italian Boy published by Pimlico (£7.99). Sarah's presentation will take place at Wanstead Library on 19 March from 8pm. Visitors are welcome (£3). For more information, call 07949 026 212

Don't we all spend too much time looking down at our phones or hurrying along surveying the pavement beneath our

feet? As an artist, I figure it is my job to do precisely the opposite.

When in the summer of 2012, London hosted the (best ever) Olympic Games in our backyard, I was busy walking the city streets, looking up at the sky and taking Polaroids. Since then, I've been making hundreds of tiny oil paintings of city skies, reimagined over my instant snaps. Far from copying what I saw, I take my snapshots as inspiration. To be clear, I make paintings, not painted-over photographs.

I had never done anything like it before, but welcomed the chance to exhibit my work during Art Trail Wanstead 2014, and found it a very positive experience. As a mum of a young toddler, I struggled to make any of the evening meetings for artists connected with the trail, but instead I did lots of social media publicity via Twitter and online arts channels. I was also very pleased to have a page on my work appear in the Wanstead Village Directory.

I showed 10 artworks that had never been seen outside my studio in The Orange Tree and was delighted to sell a framed set of eight images to a collector in Wanstead. As I packed the artwork to be taken home, the buyer told me that she had been looking for some time for "a London picture, but one that didn't shout London."

That got my work entirely right: I don't focus on landmarks but prefer the backstreets and the anonymous buildings where people live or work; sometimes districts that are being extensively rebuilt, with shiny towers displacing warehouses. I'm not sentimental about it; the skyline is continually changing.

Last year, we invited a number of artists taking part in Art Trail Wanstead to talk about their work and inspiration. This year, we are revisiting the work of some of those artists to see where the trail has taken them. Things are looking up for professional artist Sarah Kudirka, who asks: "When did you last look up at the sky, squeezed in between the city buildings?"

Still on theTrail

I'm not sentimental about it; the skyline is continually changing.

I love cities. My 'day job' leading creativity courses and design culture initiatives within a global engineering firm has taken me to some amazing places, but home is East London and I am not alone in finding it one of the most exciting places in the world in which to make art.

What's next? This April, my City.Skies.London paintings will be seen by thousands of people passing daily through Canary Wharf. I will be exhibiting a large installation in a window gallery in Canada Place. I am also seeking more opportunities to show and to work to commission in the future. Extending the series to Berlin is my next plan and I would also like

to explore the potential for large-scale prints of my work. I hope to participate in the next Art Trail Wanstead too, as it goes from strength to strength.

Simply walking in a city and looking up at the sky doesn't sound that profound perhaps, but it remains a compelling project for me and a rich seam for making more paintings. I'd be happy to inspire one person to look up at the sky today.

Most of you received a letter and pre-paid postcard from the Save Our Suburbs (SOS) campaign, organised

by the local Conservatives, before Christmas. We couldn't get to everyone before the consultation deadline and apologise if you did not receive our communication.

What is this about? Well, the Council is preparing a Redbridge Local Plan for 2015-2030 to deal with anticipated population growth from 279,000 in 2011 to an estimated 355,000 by 2030. This is a statutory requirement under the New National Planning Policy Framework to provide new homes and community facilities. While a number of sites have been identified across the borough, provision for 800 new homes is still required.

To do nothing is not an option. The Council are required to meet objectively assessed housing needs in its Local Plan. Failure to do so carries the risk that when the Redbridge Local Plan is examined by HM Planning Inspectorate, it will be rejected as unsound. Developers may then exploit the situation by advancing housing proposals on unsuitable sites across the borough. This could lead to 'planning by appeal', in which the Council's refusal of such applications are overturned because of the lack of a credible housing policy. To put it bluntly, if Redbridge does not have an up to date Local Plan, we lose the ability to make local planning decisions.

To deal with this, four options went out to consultation. They were:

1. To deliver 800 homes on the Oakfield site in Fairlop. This was the original proposal and would include the relocation of the Old Parkonians Sports Club.

2. Provide 800 homes in a garden suburb surrounding Goodmayes and King George Hospitals.

3. Develop the Woodford, South Woodford, Wanstead corridor. Transport links here are

good, but as there are no suitable large sites, this would result in increased building heights and density (high-rise flats).

4. Develop green belt land, including that around Five Oaks Lane in Hainault. However, this risks leaving Redbridge open to inappropriate development if its green belt policy is compromised.

While none of the options are ideal, we are particularly concerned about option three and fear this could open the door to inappropriate development in Wanstead and Woodford that could destroy the character of the area we love and cherish. For that reason, the SOS campaign organised a petition that obtained 2,518 signatures, and was presented to the Council on 25 January. In addition, a similar number of postcards were sent to the Council's Planning Department.

Following a decision by the Council, a full draft Local Plan, setting out detailed policies with the preferred option, will go out for consultation prior to examination by HM Planning Inspectorate. The plan should be formally adopted in late 2015.

{Save_Our_Suburbs}Last year, the Wanstead and Woodford Conservatives launched a campaign to object to 'option three' of Redbridge Council's housing plan. Councillor Chris Cummins recaps the issues

the best way to approach security is to start from the outside and work your way in. Every home is different, but the

principals of security are the same. You should also work with your neighbours, as a 'weak link' on your street could affect your security.

z We recommend that you have a low front boundary. If people can't see in, it also means criminals can't be seen, and gives them the time they need to break in.

z Curtains, nets and blinds are all good ways of stopping burglars seeing into your home.

z Make rear boundaries high by putting trellis on top, and plant spiky plants.

z Secure your side gates – make sure they are flush with the front of your house (you are allowed to use safe plastic anti-climb topping).

z Gravel driveways and paths make a noise as people approach.

z Make sure that double glazing has been put in correctly; it has been known for whole units to be cut out to gain entry.

z Sheds and garages are extensions to your homes and need to be secured too. Lock up your ladders and tools as these could be used to gain entry to your home.

z Use a floor-mounted T-bar lock for garage doors – this is even more important if your garage also has an internal door.

z Clear away any rubble that could be used to break a window (criminals are good at doing this discreetly).

z Alarms are without question one of the best deterrents. Make sure you have a box on the front and back of your property.

z Property marking kits devalue your items to a criminal.

z Dogs are a great deterrent, but remember they are a pet first.

z CCTV is becoming more affordable and is also a very good deterrent. Learn how to use your system and download footage. It is important to keep the date and time correct.

z Leaving a light or radio on is simple and effective. Burglars would rather you were not in and are less likely to take the risk if they are unsure.

z Porches give you a second line of defence at the front of your home. Make sure to lock both doors.

Remember, your house is your home and you want to keep it safe, but it has to work for you. Don't give burglars an easy time, but don't change the way you live to suit them. When reviewing your security, you should also review your fire strategy as well. Get the whole family involved; make it a game and get the kids to draw plans and practice it.

Safe as housesPCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team offers some tips to help you keep your home secure and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary

The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. For more information, call 020 8345 2832

It is a specific exercise technique and is not to be confused with trekking, hillwalking or rambling.Nordic Walking poles add two major benefits to going for a walk, they use the upper body muscles and they propel you along, making it feel easier to work quite hard!In order to gain maximum benefit from Nordic Walking it is essential to learn the correct technique from a qualified instructor who is accredited by Nordic Walking UK - see www.nordicwalking.co.uk
