Tim is celebrating finishingcollecting data on 663trees along 33 streets.

Can you tell your ash from your maple? If you answered yes, then you're in theminority. It turns out most peoplecannot identify an ash tree and, therefore, have no idea what sort ofimpact an invasive exotic insect such asthe Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) will haveuntil it's too late. This event will focuson the trees to show Vermonters howprominate ash trees are in the state fromstreet trees to woodlands.Experience shows that the morepeople that understand the impact, the

more engaged they will become.  VTUCF and partners will sponsor a week‐long statewide Ash TreeAwareness Week during the week leading up to Arbor Day (April 27‐May 3) in order to:

Celebrate and recognize the valuable contributions of ashtrees.Continue to raise awareness about the impacts of EAB.

Meet A Tree StewardColchester Tree Champion, Tim Moran Upon completion of the SOUL Tree Steward course, Tim Moranchose to fulfill his 20‐hour volunteercommitment by conducting a shade treeinventory for the Town of Colchester inconjunction with VTUCF. Although thetown had developed a Street Tree MasterPlan in 2001, that plan primarily addressedspecifications for tree plantings in newdevelopments as well as recommendationsto replace trees or improve plantings alongexisting roadways. However, as no treeinventory had been conducted previously, there was no solid basis for recommendingcertain tree varieties nor had anyonestudied the overall picture to determine predominant species inspecific neighborhoods and whether different species of treeswould be better suited, depending on planting location, susceptibility to diseases and insect pests and other factors. Lack ofan inventory also meant that few ordinances have been put intoplace (other than state statutes) to protect or manage the town'strees, especially along residential streets, or to restore areas wheretrees were cleared to make way for development.Read More  Become a SOUL Tree Steward.
