5 THINGS  I LOVE ABOUT WARE!Lizzy Detrempe, c/o 2018

5. Community Your RAs, hall mates, roommates, and friends will be there for youwhen you are everything from homesick to hungry. Our motto,“Integrity Without End” describes the students and staff that make upWare. Working, studying, and celebrating with each other, Ware willquickly become your home away from home.

4. FIRs (Faculty in Residences)If you don’t already know, Ware Commons has the BEST, mostoutgoing FIRs on campus. Dr. Tunks and his wife, Jeanne, plan thebest Sunday salons! They feature homemade food, entertainment, and special guests (Coach Morris and President Turner, just to name acouple). They also love to help students discover the unique andadventurous features of Dallas. Yay for fun FIRs!

3. RAs (Residence Assistants)RAs are the people you turn to for support, advice, and so muchmore. They are not there to be intimidating or to get you in trouble, they‘re there to help you get through the year as easily as possible.Ware’s RAs are all-around great people who get to know youindividually and will always have your back.

2. LocationLocated on the Southeast part of campus, Ware may seem like a farwalk to your 8am class in Dallas Hall but trust me, the walk is worth it.Surrounding Ware are all the things you really need to survive theschool year. There’s Arnold Dining Hall when you’re hungry, LaMadeline, Rolly Polly, and Pokie O’s when you need anything otherthan the dining hall, CVS for late night snack runs, Starbucks for yourcoffee needs, the bookstore for all your textbooks and SMU gear,Dedman for working out, and Ford Stadium, Moody Coliseum, thetennis complex and the soccer field for cheering on the Mustangs! Allof this is in Ware’s back (and front) yard!

1. FriendshipsThe friendships you make in college will last a lifetime and thesefriendships begin in Ware. You’ll experience everything together, including the first boulevard of the football season, Ware Commonsbanquets, early morning fire drills, and so much more. The first fewweeks can be hectic getting to know everyone, but once you do, thememories, laughter, and late night talks will become endless!

Our TraditionsThere are a number of things that are unique to the Ware community. Our traditions are a major component of what ties all Ware residentsto a common experience. The greatest part about our traditions is thatthey are still being created! Since last year was the first year of theResidential Commons model, Ware is still figuring itself out. We hadan amazing time last year, and hope to continue to define its identity inthe upcoming year.

With that being said, we encourage you to take an active part increating our legacy. Have a great idea? Share it! That one idea couldturn into an amazing experience, which could then turn into somethingthat gets passed down from class to class. Who knows, you mighteven come back 50 years from now to Ware students still participatingin the tradition YOU created!

Below you will find a few traditions to look forward to!

A Message from the PresidentDear SMU Class of 2019,

We are so excited you have decided to be a Mustang! I wanted to take a minuteto welcome you to Southern Methodist University and Ware Commons.I came to SMU from Michigan. When I left my comfortable hometown and thepeople I had been surrounded by since I was five years old and headed to Dallas,I was terrified. I wasn’t sure what I had gotten myself into. The move was fartherand more expansive than any I had ever imagined myself having to do. Ware, however, gave me an opportunity to meet great people from all around the worldand become involved outside of the classroom. It created a space for me to findmy best friends. Being an active member of the community and taking aleadership role within Ware is integral in creating your ideal college experience.

Ware Commons will be your home away from home for the next two years, and aplace you will look back on fondly after your time living here is over. It is a placewhere you will create friendships, stay up late to study for midterms, laugh withyour friends, escape from the heat, do your own laundry, participate in WareCares, and learn to share a bathroom with complete strangers who may becomeyour best friends. It will be a place where every aspect of your life as a collegestudent comes together. It is also a place where it is okay if everything aboutfreshman year is not perfect all the time. We are here to help you make the mostof your experience at SMU. Freshman year is such an exciting time, and we hopethat you are as excited to be a Mustang and a member of Ware Commons, as weare.

Please join our Facebook page “Ware Commons 2015-2016”, follow us onInstagram @Warecommons and on twitter @ware_commons, so that you canget in the loop with the latest happenings in Ware!
