For me the decision brings mixed emotions. This is my 12 th year here at Warranwood and the 20 th year as a Principal. I love my job and am very proud of the great caring community we have all made Warranwood – so I feel it is the ide- al time to move on to other things. I will have a lot more to say before I go, so watch this space! THE ETERNAL WARRANWOOD PARKING DILEMMA We have a number of complaints from Maroondah Council, from crossing supervisors, from neighbours and from us! Many parents are ignoring parking restrictions. Many parents are walking with their children across roads near but not at the crossings – dangerous and appalling lack of good parenting and modelling. Some parents are parking across our neighboursdriveways, making it difficult or impossible to access their properties. Far too many parents are abusing the access to our staff carpark. We have a small number of parents with disabled stickers who are welcome to use that section of the carpark. We dont want to lock the gates to make life difficult for those people, however the dangerous (and dare I say lazy) attitudes of others have made our car park dangerous for students, staff and other parents alike. While the police and Council officers will hopefully visit and impose fines all we can do is ask parents to be re- spectful of our request that the staff carpark is just that. After watching the parking situation around our school it would seem we need to have a RUIn Program for parents. It all comes down to RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING and INTEGRITY! PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

RETIREMENT I informed our School Council on Tuesday night that I will be retiring at the end of

term 3. For me the decision brings mixed emotions. This is my 12th

year here at

Warranwood and the 20th

year as a Principal. I love my job and am very proud of

the great caring community we have all made Warranwood – so I feel it is the ide-

al time to move on to other things. I will have a lot more to say before I go, so

watch this space!

Some parents are parking across our neighbours’ driveways, making it difficult or impossible to access their properties.

Far too many parents are abusing the access to our staff carpark. We have a small number of parents with disabled stickers who are welcome to use that section of the carpark. We don’t want to lock the gates to make life difficult for those people, however the dangerous (and dare I say lazy) attitudes of others have made our car park dangerous for students, staff and other parents alike.

While the police and Council officers will hopefully visit and impose fines all we can do is ask parents to be re-spectful of our request that the staff carpark is just that. After watching the parking situation around our school it would seem we need to have a RUIn Program for parents. It all comes down to RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING and INTEGRITY! The kids know it, so… JAPANESE VISITORS Tanya and I met with our Kalinda counterparts last Thursday to begin organising the 10 days in August when our friends from Lily Vale Primary School in Japan will be visiting. It will be a busy time, but we are looking for-ward to it a great deal. Thank you to those parents who have offered to host the visiting students. Please let us know if you would like to be added to the list.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT CHANGES TO STUDENT REPORTING THIS YEAR

This year we will have a new reporting format to coincide with the New Victorian Curriculum. Over the com-ing weeks, I will present range of sample components of the new report to assist parents with being familiar and confident with the report when it is released at the end of term. The opportunity to develop a new report-ing structure has been an exciting and challenging one and the staff at Warranwood have been working hard in teams to moderate and define the types of comments and information that you as parents receive. The government has strict guidelines for reporting procedures for schools and we have taken these expec-tations into account whilst developing our new system. This year you will notice only maths (Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry and Statistics & Proba-bility strands) and English (Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening strands) are assessed on a yearly attainment level. This means in general students in each Year level for English and maths will be working towards a corresponding level of the Victorian Curriculum level to reach the standard expected, eg. Year 1 = Level 1 at end of year, Year 4 = Level 4 at end of year. In all other areas of the curriculum including The Arts, science, history, geography and economics the re-porting cycle is now a two year process so the content of the curriculum will be taught over a 2 year period and reported on accordingly each two years. It is important to note that Economics is introduced at the be-ginning of Year 5 for students to reach standard at Year 6 and Civics and Citizenship is introduced at Year 3 for students to reach standard at Year 4. An example of what this will look like is: an average Year 3 student will experience curriculum from the level 3/4 curriculum but only reach the standard when completing work of a Year 4 level or upon completing Year 4 and meeting the criteria set in the curriculum. Throughout Year 3 the average student will be working towards the Year 4 standard benchmark. At Warranwood we will of course have information and work samples through Portfolios and Learning Journals to complement the re-ports and our 3-way interviews (teacher, parent and student) will still play an integral part in our reporting process. The first major change to share with you is the new Learning Behaviours table compared to previous indica-tors of Effort and Behaviour. Every student will be assessed against the learning habits below as Rarely, Sometimes, Usually or Consistently meeting the expectations. The learning habits are:

Respects the learning environment

Uses class time effectively

Persists when tasks are challenging

Engages in learning by listening and participating

Accepts and responds to feedback

Works cooperatively in group situations

Manages own learning

Is resilient and is able to bounce back I am sure that these learning habits will form the basis of essential conversations about student progress at 3-way interviews, in the classroom and at home!

What a great community… If you have been around the school much this year you will have noticed Helen or Merilyn (pictured) or Maureen working in the school, doing gardening or in the classroom. Helen spent all last Saturday tidying up the front of the school including the carpark and planting. Maureen has been at each of our Grown-Up Garden Club Days and Merilyn has made a commitment to sweep up and keep the main part of the school tidy for our Open Day. This is ex-traordinary commitment to our school and their grandchildren and community. Just a wonderful development in our school life!

After the great success of our Fathering Project launch night our Warranwood Champion dads and key male figures will be hold-ing our first planning meeting on Wednesday 7June at 7.30pm at the Croydon Hotel. The aim of the meeting will be to create an organising team and plan our first Dad/KMF-Children event. Of

course, we will take the chance to have a meal and enjoy each other’s company at the same time! A personal note and details will be sent home early next week to encourage everyone who is interested in be-ing involved in getting our Warranwood Dads group up and running. Please remember if you were not able to make the first night you are more than welcome to come along and get involved. See you there! Some ideas already bandied about include bike rides, camping weekend, fishing day, trampolining, billy kart derby challenge and more! IT TAKES A VILLAGE ... Over the last week it has really hit home to me how important it is to have other’s support with my boys and the role other important people play in supporting them both emotionally, socially and with daily needs. As life be-comes more complex and busy every family must have a key network of trusted and important relationships to ensure our young people grow in a connected community. The temptation can be as things get more stressful in life to retreat into your inner circle and not find time for the little things. We can become islands with very lim-ited and guarded networks. Do you remember as a youngster the key people who you considered uncles and aunties even though they weren’t? Do you remember having street parties at Christmas or nicking in next door to get some sugar/milk/flour for your parents? I’d like to throw a challenge out to everyone over the coming weeks try to build stronger connections with or reconnect with your neighbours. Our school community and the children who are at the very centre of it will benefit from healthy and supportive relationships being modelled and enjoyed. Remember kids mimic adults and now is the perfect time to reach out and make a positive connection. Shane

CANBERRA CAMP

When our Senior School students visited Canberra recently we were provided financial assistance from PACER, which allowed us to reduce the cost of camp by $30.00 each. Thank you PACER! The Parliament and Civic Education Rebate (PACER) is an initiative of the Australian Government which provides some financial assistance for student in Year 4-12 across Australia to travel to Canberra, the nation’s capital. Under PACER, students who learn about civics and citizenship in the classroom see their knowledge brought to life when they experience Canberra first hand. Students must visit Parliament House, Old Par-liament House (The Museum of Australian Democra-cy and/or The National Electoral Education Centre) and the Australian War Memorial. They also have the opportunity to visit a number of other sites of cultural and historical interest while in Canberra.” (http://www.pacer.org.au/)

Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017

The Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open and we are excited about participating again this year. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition, but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the challenge. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. You can register your child by completing the form in this newsletter and returning it to school. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc I hope that we have many enthusiastic Warranwood students participat-ing this year!
