6 | EXPERIENCE BETTER

THE ENTERPRISE REVOLUTIONWarwickshire College Group is committed to developing entrepreneurial skills and attributes in all its students. Employability is an important aspect of all higher education programmes, but at Warwickshire College Group we like to do more than help to get our graduates into a job. Today’s job market is dynamic and ever changing. We believe that to be successful throughout their working life, graduates need a range of skills and attributes – together called an entrepreneurial mindset.

These qualities enable graduates to move from job to job or progress up the career ladder, being adaptable to the changes and challenges they meet on the way. Some of the jobs could be in self-employment, and challenges may include knowing when to go it alone and when to work in partnership.

Most of our HE courses include a tailored module called Academic Study Skills and Entrepreneurial Thinking. This should start students on their journey of personal development and highlight the changes they want to make to achieve personal goals and aspirations.

Yes, we offer high quality degrees, excellent facilities and expert teaching, but we also offer real-world experience and great career focused opportunities.

Warwickshire College Group does things differently!EXPERIENCE BETTER

Essentially, we want our students to be

› Confident › Enterprise-aware › Innovative › Willing to ‘have a go’ › Resilient

Specialist lecturers use a variety of methods to supplement lectures so students get the support they need as well as providing opportunities for self-learning and discovery complimented by peer discussion and debate.

Whole college events support subject specific delivery; all first year students come together in our unique day-long Student Symposiums. In the environment of a professional conference, our students have the opportunity to learn and practise new skills in a fun and ‘safe’ environment – safe because if anyone performs below their own expectations it does not count towards marks but instead provides valuable experience. We actually find that our students excel and are amazed by their own talents and that of their peers.

For an amazing higher education experience – Warwickshire College Group is ready. Are you?

EXPERIENCE BETTER | 7

A BETTER DEGREE FOR YOUAll of our degrees are vocational and designed to be relevant to industry. In fact, they’re designed in partnership with employers so we know we’re up to date with the latest developments and you know you’re learning from the experts.

Most people agree that the best way to learn is to do something first hand and learn from your mistakes and successes, and we are no exception. At Warwickshire College Group we happily put the emphasis on hands-on learning. Plus you’ll have the full support of our specialist lecturers and industry experts, ensuring you develop great depth of knowledge and confidence in your ability.

WE’RE WELL CONNECTEDIt’s not always what you know - it’s also who you know. Luckily, Warwickshire College Group is well known for its strong links with industry, and this is clear when it comes to our degrees. We are often approached by businesses who put forward live briefs for our students to work on, and we have excellent input from industry on a whole range of lessons, master classes and placement opportunities.

Our specialist employer areas include engineering, IT, business, leadership and management, social care, early years, computing, horticulture and more.

Some of the companies we work with include: Alstom Power, Bizzy Tots Day Nursery, Cummins, Jaguar LandRover, Prodrive, Rolls Royce, Telent Communications, Volvo Group UK and Warwickshire County Council.

BIGGER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTERTake our smaller class sizes for example – they allow you to train and study in a more focused environment. You benefit from more one-to-one time with your lecturer or instructor and it's easier to get to know your classmates. So in this case, smaller is definitely better.

The smaller class sizes also allow us to tailor your course to suit you. We can pick up on your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes and work around a learning style that’ll suit you and help you get the best grades you can.

FLEXIBILITY IS KEYWhen it comes down to it we can all be a bit choosy, and when you’re making a decision as important as this, you need to have the right options available to you. That’s why we offer a diverse range of courses from BA (Hons) to Foundation degrees, HNCs and HNDs. We also offer the opportunity to study part-time and by distance learning, helping you earn as you learn, further your career and ultimately enhance your future prospects.

Warwickshire College Group has been awarded the highest score of ‘confidence’ by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for academic standards and learning opportunities.

Warwickshire College Group has become only the fourth college in the UK to be granted powers by the Privy Council to award its own Foundation degrees.

A Foundation degree is equivalent in size and status to the first two years of a traditional Honours degree but is deliberately vocationally-based, preparing students for higher technician and associate professional roles. Accordingly, the Foundation degree courses include either learning in the workplace or substantial work placements.

The new Foundation Degree Awarding Powers (FDAP) allow us to offer the qualifications without requiring a university partner. Before granting such powers the college was subject to a year-long scrutiny by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in order to demonstrate we are a “well-founded, cohesive and self-critical academic community that demonstrates firm guardianship of its standards”. All universities are subject to similar scrutiny before being granted the powers to award Honours degrees.

The award of FDAP acknowledges the significant role that Warwickshire College Group plays in delivering excellent higher education courses and is the culmination of over three years of hard work by the college. The award serves to demonstrate that the college’s higher education quality and standards are equal to any university in the country.

We can now begin to design our own Foundation degrees that uniquely meet the needs of local employer partners and give our students the chance to develop the high-level work-related knowledge and skills required. Many existing courses will not change as we have developed excellent collaborative links with partner universities that serve both students and employers well, but these powers give us the flexibility to be responsive to local and national needs.

Warwickshire College Group currently offers over 70 Foundation degrees and full Honours degrees validated by a number of university partners, with over 1000 students currently studying for higher education qualifications with the college. See pages 32-79 for a complete list of all our current Foundation degrees on offer.

16 | DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR ITFind out what leaders in their field, celebrities and VIPs think.

Tegla runs the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation to promote peace through sports. She says: “ Warwickshire College Group's Henley-in-Arden College has the potential and responsibility to develop and nurture human talent for the service of mankind.”

Tegla Loroupe, marathon champion and United Nations Ambassador

“ We all love our horses and are always striving to keep them healthy for as long as possible and this college is a fantastic place to be able to do that. Moreton Morrell students are hugely lucky to be able to work with these amazing facilities.”

Zara Phillips MBE, speaking at the opening of our new Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre

“ The facilities here are fantastic throughout. As the college has grown it means you can have conditions of this standard you can use throughout the year. The fact that you can have dressage, eventing, BHS, and the facilities are good enough for competition - it’s bringing high standards to the students. They get access to watch top equestrian competition as well. It’s inspiring for them to watch.”

Carl Hester MBE, Olympic Dressage Gold Medallist

“ I recently had the honour of speaking at Warwickshire College Group's Higher Education Graduation Ceremony. It is so important to recognise achievement and the college did a great job helping the students, along with their friends and family, celebrate such a big day. Their success was the result of the hard work and dedication the students put in to their studies, and it was a pleasure to be part of such an inspirational day.”

Ruth Amos, entrepreneur and founder of StairSteady

“ It is good to see a college giving people the key skills and training to help build a balanced, sustainable economy.”

“ The hands-on manufacturing experience of the Power Academy and the entrepreneurial skills learnt at the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy are providing important foundations for the West Midlands economy of the future.”

Vince Cable, Business Secretary

DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT | 17

“ I’m amazed at the diversity of work which they have produced. I am excited and heartened by their great designs. The students should be really proud of their work.”

Chris Beardshaw, TV presenter, speaking about Pershore College students' garden designs

“ The college represents a cluster of excellence and investment. The state-of-the-art facilities I have visited – such as the training restaurant and Power Industry Academy make a big difference.”

Ed Balls, Shadow Chancellor

“ Horticulture is pretty cutting-edge at Pershore College which is wonderful because it isn't always considered entrepreneurial, high aiming and science-led, but here it’s kind of right in the soul of it. The students here seem really clued up, more than I was at their age. I'm impressed with the college's plans for the future and the fact it’s looking at cutting edge areas - and there is a big focus here on entrepreneurism which is so important.”

James Wong, botanist and BBC science presenter

“ I went to Edinburgh University and Cardiff University and it’s great to see a local college competing with these national institutions really. If you’ve got the resources you can compete at whatever level you need to – it’s good to see.”

Andy studied a Level 3 qualification in Animal Management at Warwickshire College Group and loved it so much he decided to move on to a degree.

“ I love the way that you’re not just a number, the lecturers and staff know you and what you’re capable of and I received all the support I could have asked for.

“ I also joined the SU team – and a real highlight was being involved with student parliament and planning the social side of student life. It really has been amazing. I can now look back on it for the rest of my life and say that this was where it all started. The dream came true all because of my degree.”

Students up for top award...

A short film by students from Warwickshire College Group was nominated for a prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) Award.

The film – Aeternum Vale – described as a romance set in a dystopian future – was made by four students – Richard Davis, Miro Pavlovic, Dane Camille and Tom Osborn – on the college’s HND Digital Film Production course as their final major project.

The film took five months to complete, with the students working on every element - generating ideas, research, script-writing, auditions, casting, filming and editing.

Upon hearing the film had been shortlisted, Richard said,

“ Getting a nomination for something as prestigious as the RTS is a big deal, so I’m really excited for myself and the group to get the recognition for all the hard work we put in.”

Richard has also had success with some of his other work. He was nominated in the 2013 Newport International Film Festival with his film ‘BUCK’, and the Celluloid Screams Competition 2013 with his film ‘Happy Birthday’.

This two-year course introduces and guides students in the craft and technical expertise of filmmaking. With experienced lecturers and substantial support from professional industry workers, established practices in filmmaking are put into practice to produce short films, work for TV and videos.

The course invites individuals who want to tell stories about the world we live in to share their vision with us. The digital era has opened up many opportunities for this and this course harnesses this very idea.

If you have a passion for visual storytelling and want a career in the film or television industries then this is the course for you.

The course is 2/3 practical and 1/3 theoretical. This ratio works well to allow students to be adequately equipped with the skills to enter the industry, yet also allows for completing students to top-up to a BA Honours via an established progression route.

Typical modules include:

Nicole is now in the final year of her Foundation degree. Each week she works for three days in the salon and invests three days on her degree studies. She says:

“ In the first year of the course, it was hard work as I was getting back into learning and there was a lot of content and accompanying assignments. This year, it is still demanding but I have settled into a routine and can pace myself much better."

Sophie Sidaway’s unique business idea will see the production of the first commercial crop of Juneberries in the UK.

Sophie, a HNC student at Pershore College, put forward her proposal for growing the novel fruit crop to the college’s Enterprise Board. The Board gave full support with a grant to purchase and import the initial plant stock from Canada and by making land at Pershore available for establishing the initial crop.

Juneberries taste delicious, resembling dark cherry or raisin, with a hint of almond in the tiny, soft seed. They also have high nutritional qualities similar to established ‘superfoods’ such as blueberries with high levels of protein, calcium, iron, and antioxidants.

Sophie said, “it was great to benefit from the college’s Enterprise Grant designed to help business start-ups, and to be offered a half-acre plot for 5 years, as well as access to equipment and expertise was a dream come true!”

VETERINARY STUDIESOur veterinary nursing courses have been awarded direct accreditation by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). This means that students do not need to complete the RCVS external examinations to become registered veterinary nurses.

A qualified Veterinary Nurse with 15 years’ experience in both small animal and emergency practice environments, Victoria Bowes has been a lecturer in Veterinary Nursing at Warwickshire College Group for the past ten years and is currently course manager. As a practical examiner for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons she also has the pleasure of assessing the next generation of Veterinary Nurses.

Victoria says,

“ Keeping current in the industry is essential for me on both a personal and professional level so I continue to do locum work at an Out of Hours Emergency Veterinary practice, skills which I can use within lectures to enhance the student experience.

“ We have a fantastic reputation for the quality of our veterinary nursing courses at Warwickshire College Group, and as one of only a handful of RCVS Veterinary Nursing accredited centres, our students have the advantage of being fully qualified to practise when they graduate.”

“ It gives you confidence knowing the theory and it means you can demonstrate it at work.”

Speaking about the animal care department at Moreton Morrell College, she said:

80 | MATURE STUDENTS

Course: DipHE / BA (Hons) Fine Art

Did you enjoy your time here and do you feel you got the support you needed to help you through your course?

"I had four fantastic years. All the support mechanisms within the Fine Art department are exemplary. All the tutors get to know the students’ individual needs and this is evidenced by the work outcomes. Even through some very difficult personal circumstances, I

cannot begin to describe the help, friendship and support I received from staff and my peers. I am certain it was my art course that kept me sane during the whole process."

What were the highlights for you from your time at college?

"As a mature student returning to education after many years, it was an exciting learning opportunity. I found the challenges set and the high level of discussion and research exciting.

The major highlight was the opportunity to curate an exhibition in Birmingham of my own fellow students work."

Can you give a brief summary of your career so far since leaving the college?

"Having finished four years of the Diploma with a Distinction, I am having a gap year, before continuing my studies on a Masters degree course.

"I have recently acquired my own studio space near home and have started to think more commercially about my art, as well as to develop my practice further and delve more deeply into the academic research opportunities."

What advice would you give to someone who was interested in a similar career or was currently studying in your field?

"Go for it – whatever your age. It is fantastic to open your mind to new experiences and for me it was the beginning of a totally new life. Make sure you attend every workshop, visit, lecture – you may not feel you are interested at the moment, but you will undoubtedly find in years to come that you need those skills and historical context."

Can you sum up your time with Warwickshire College Group in one sentence?

"Thank you for a life changing experience."

Twelve thousand adults study with us each year. Being a mature student is a big decision. After all, mature students often have more responsibilities – jobs, children, a business – to name a few – and that can make it difficult to fit in studying too. 82 | MONEY MATTERS

INVEST IN YOUR FUTUREDid you know that people with a degree earn an average of £12,000 a year more than people without a degree?

Our course fees are competitive and you’ll notice they are much lower than the average university. Plus many students are eligible for financial support.

No matter what course you choose to study, when it comes to fees you can be sure of one thing - you are getting real value for money.

FULL-TIME COURSESIn 2015/16 most first year higher education students will be charged a fee of £7,210 or less depending on the subject they are studying.

You can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of your fees (see next page for more details).

PART-TIME COURSESFees for part-time study are usually based on the full-time fees for a similar course, less £500, divided pro rata.

For example, if it costs £5,960 for a full-time Foundation degree consisting of six modules per year, then a student taking three modules per year would then pay one half of £5,460 giving an annual fee of £2,730.

Part-time students can get tuition fee loans in the same way as full-time students but do not have access to grants for living costs.

For more information visit our website at www.warwickshire.ac.uk/moneymatters

UNIVERSITY OF WORCESTER HORTICULTURE COURSESSome of our horticulture courses at Pershore College have fees set by and paid to the University of Worcester. Contact us or see individual course details for the correct information for each course. If relevant, check for fees and bursaries at the University of Worcester which differ from those set by Warwickshire College Group.

PERSHORE COLLEGE DIPLOMASPershore College Diplomas have the lowest fees but do not attract fee loans. Contact the college for more information.
