AASA looked at the research from leading educational institutions and

research organizations to develop a new multi-metric, research-based definition of

College and Career Ready.

● Course attendance is 8 times more predictive of success in freshman year than eighth grade test scores.

● Students who successfully complete Algebra II are twice as likely to complete a 4-year degree.

● Students who have a 2.8 GPA graduating high school have a 71% likelihood of reaching the American middle class.

● Students engaged in co-curricular activities are more likely to pursue higher education.

● Completing community service to fulfill class requirements enhances the average odds of college graduation by 22 percentage points.

● Those who took an AP or International Baccalaureate (IB) course were found to be 17 percent more likely to persist in four-year colleges and 30 percent more likely to persist in two-year colleges. There were similar findings for dual enrollment students.

For Your Consideration ……. ● The indicators are research based.● The “frameworks” that leverage

them are not yet research based.● What is important to your district,

your region, our state?

Milwaukee Convening (Key Messages)● There is a collective will to advance objectives, inform narrative, and

support data informed RTI/MLSS.● We need to be agile, find common ground, learn from one another,

and approach the project in phases.● There is a lot of great work already underway across the state● We need to avoid the pitfall of focusing on the state report card and

keep our focus on the goals we set for students. ● We need local/regional work groups to define and test “use cases”

that inform our collective efforts● We need to confirm research for ‘Life Ready’ indicators, elementary

indicators, state specific indicators, technological literacy, etc.

Green Bay Convening (Action Planning)● Advance a “template” of AASA RR! indicators.● Provide support to better understand the research and metadata

behind each of the indicators.● Develop a FAQ to help onboard members at each phase of

implementation.● Develop a shared resource to see how individual districts across the

state have leveraged the indicators but personalized their communication plans with their communities.

● Start a Google+ community to share information. ● Support district/regional efforts through the CESA Network.● Maintain an open line of communication with DPI OEA. ● Prioritize areas of further study for Phase 2.

• The work you’re undertaking may (likely) require some

redesigning of local data collection systems.

• If you think you need a custom change to your student

information system (SIS), try to work from the Common

Education Data Standards (CEDS).

• ACT 59 requirements are for reporting only – not necessarily

including the data in calculation of report card scores.

Have your data team check out the information provided at the

2018 WISEdash Conference.

35

● Consider asking them to draft a municipal and/or legislative resolution in support of expanding the scope of accountability for schools.

● Help them consider the similarities and differences between what matters to them vs. what the Redefining Ready! indicators serve to measure (and what research supports).

○ Site selection for specific industries vs. readiness to transition to a wide variety of post-secondary experiences.

● Determine the viability of being able to consistently capture the data elements desired. Develop an action plan with clear expectations of who is responsible for what data collection.

● Consider how they can help support shared objectives and celebrate the progress of the Redefining Ready! movement in your area.
