SPRING CONFERENCE APRIL 6-8, 2017 GRAND HYATT WASHINGTON HOTEL

OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE FOR OUR FIRMS AND OUR CLIENTS:

WORLD CLASS LEADERSHIP

WASHINGTON, DC

Welcome to the 2016 Fall Conference in the Emerald City, Seattle, Washington!

On behalf of the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA) Board of Directors and GBA’s Conference Committee, we are very glad you are here. I hope this conference is valuable and that you have fun!

GBA is in a time of growth and renewed engagement. We hear time after time that the most significant engagement opportunity is attending a GBA conference: learning from subject matter experts and colleagues; connecting with old friends and making new. We hope you will make the most of every opportunity this week to learn and network during our general sessions, breakouts, socials and sponsor breaks. We also hope that you look for opportunities to engage more fully with GBA by

participating in committees and councils and by attending (or presenting at!) future conferences.

The Conference is full of dynamic presentations on a variety of important business topics. Our agenda includes our always-popular business roundtables, sharing best practices with peers on common issues. We have also scheduled many social activities; networking is one of the most valuable benefits of our conferences.

I want to thank the Conference Committee and GBA Staff, especially our Chair Kim Morrison (Morrison Geotechnical Solutions, Inc.) and Vice-Chairs Charlie Head (Sanborn Head & Associates) and Art Hoffmann (Gannett Fleming) for the countless volunteer hours they have invested. I also want to thank our sponsors and our member-firms that bring you our local color activities.

As usual the conference will be recorded and made available to all member firms on our newly renovated GBA website! In a few weeks, check out your favorite session recordings at www.geoprofessional.org and share with others in your firm.

Thank you for spending your valuable time with us. Have a wonderful time in Seattle!

Welcome to the 2017 Spring Conference in Washington D.C.!

On behalf of the Geoprofessional Business Association Board of Directors, Conference Committee and staff, I welcome you to the Nation’s Capital. Our conference focus is on World Class Leadership to optimize performance for our firms and for our clients.

GBA Member-Firms are among the best in the world!

While convening in Washington D.C., we will do what world class leaders do - learn, engage, experience, honor, celebrate, explore, and share.

Learn from subject matter experts on a wide variety of topics.

Engage by actively attending the general sessions, participating in breakouts, meeting with our sponsors, and connecting with friends and colleagues during our social events.

Experience the services offered by our valuable conference sponsors during breaks and networking sessions.

Honor those who will be recognized during Friday’s banquet dinner as we reflect on the efforts that helped GBA grow and prosper during the last year.

Celebrate geoprofessionals together. We are part of an honorable profession that improves the health, safety, and quality of life for those communities where we work. Mayor Muriel Bowser has proclaimed this as Geoprofessionals Week in Washington D.C. Let’s celebrate together!

Explore the Nation’s Capital with your colleagues or on your own. Enjoy the inspiring monument and memorials, cultural treasures, and the many historical and educational institutions that the city has to offer.

Share your experiences with each other during the conference. GBA was built on collaboration. Also, share the information you collect during the conference with the employees in your firm. The conference is being recorded so you can pass your experience forward.

I want to thank the Conference Committee and the GBA Staff for the countless hours they have invested in this conference. I would like to highlight the efforts of the Past Conference Committee Chair, Kim Morrison, P.E., R.G. (Morrison Geotechnical Solutions, Inc.) and the Conference Committee Vice-Chair Charlie Head, P.E., P.G. (Sanborn-Head & Associates, Inc.). I also want to thank our sponsors, alliance organizations, and local Member-Firms for their support.

Thank you for your continued support of GBA and for spending your valuable time with us. Have a wonderful experience in Washington D.C.

Arthur G. “Art” Hoffmann, P.E., D.GE GBA Conference Committee Chair Gannett Fleming, Inc.

Restraint of Trade IssuesMeetings of organizations that comprise competitors,as GBA does, provide a venue where collusive action potentially could occur. Such action would violate antitrust laws, the Sherman Act and FederalTrade Commission Act, in particular. These two lawsprohibit contracts, combinations, and conspiraciesthat unreasonably restrain trade. In order to ensure that GBA unquestionably makes a best effort to comply with the law, please review the following list of issues you may not at this meeting discuss (unlessthey are public knowledge). Please abide by them:

• current or future prices, • fair or unfair profit levels,• price adjustments, • cash discounts, • credit terms, • allocating markets, • wage rates, or • refusing to deal with a certain organization.

The Federal Government can impose severe civil and criminal penalties for antitrust-law violations; individuals and organizations that allege harm can also file suit. GBA’s experience has been that it is relatively easy to comply with the laws in full. Use common sense; when in doubt, ask questions.

Professional Development Hours (PDHs)Full Conference Attendees will receive 1.0 PDH for each 50 minutes of session attendance - up to 11.8 PDHs. Friday only attendees will receive 7.1 PDHs. Proof of attendance will be e-mailed after the conference with the post-conference survey.

Get the AppKeep up to date with GBA by downloading the GBA Conference meeting app. Useful for meeting attendees as well as those unable to attend, the GBA Conference app provides the

latest information about the meeting’s schedule, activity locations, attendees, speakers, and topics. It also provides links to speaker presentations and handouts.

Download Instructions:1. Access the App Store on iOS devices and the Play Store on Android devices. (If you’re using a Blackberry or Windows phone, skip these steps. You will need to use the web version of the app.)2. Search for GBA or GBA Spring Conference.3. Once you find the app, tap Download or Install.4. After installing, a new icon will appear on your homescreen.

GBA would like to thank Agile Frameworks for sponsoring the GBA Meeting App.

During the transition, Gary engaged with an executive coach and credits that decision with challenging his thinking and providing him with candid performance feedback.

10:00AM - 10:30AMMinimizing the Impact of Organizational Silos - Tear Down the Silos! Nigel Miller, P.E. (Stantec Consulting)

Do you see the impact of silos in your organization? Are silos impacting client delivery or reducing the value of your firm? Unlike

silos farmers use to separate different types of grain, organizational silos that separate different types of employees often hinder performance. A tight-knit department that works well together can be a plus for any business. However, organizational silos can be like fortresses within a company and eventually cause serious problems that might not be noticed until the damage is done.

Silos can negatively impact the efficiency, dependability, and overall value of your firm. While silos are present in almost all organizations, they often result in unintended and negative consequences. This session will identify how silos develop and how to prevent them from having detrimental effects on your people. The structure of your organization alone won’t solve these problems - the solution requires leadership to develop a healthy environment and incentives to minimize the damaging impacts of silos. SATURDAY, APRIL 8

4:30PM - 8:00PMLocal Color Night:International Spy Museum ($40.00 per person)

The International Spy Museum is world-renowned for its entertaining and informative introduction of visitors to the world of spies. Their motto is “Assume Nothing” and we will learn why during our visit.

We begin with a 40-minute overview of the museum plus Q&A with the Spy Museum curator, Dr. Vince Houghton. He will discuss various artifacts on display in the museum as well as the impact of science and technology on intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination capabilities; the use and implementation of military intelligence; and

the histories of organizations like the CIA and the OSS. Of course, current events will also be part of his discussion.

After the session with Dr. Houghton we will have approximately 2 hours to explore the more than 200 spy gadgets, weapons, bugs, cameras and technologies on display. We will also have the opportunity to learn the stories behind the spycraft and test our skills of observation, analysis, surveillance and disguise at interactive stations.

Individuals signed up for this event will receive specific details and admission tickets from GBA staff.
