Brethren, the weather is warming, the grass is growing and we are seeing a little more of that yellow globe in the sky. I want to start this message with a huge thanks to MWB Ridge Gilmour, Past Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Mason of Utah and current member of WA#4, who opened and closed our February Special on the Master Mason Degree. Well done MWB Ridge you did a great job. To that end, we opened on the Third Degree to confer two MM degrees, so let us welcome our newest Master Masons Bother Pat Edwards and Brother James Franklin. Brothers when you get the chance be sure to welcome these brothers to the sublime degree of a Master Mason and the newest signatures in the membership roll. But that is not the end of it, as our numbers continue to grow so do the number of degrees we are putting on, at our March Stated Communication you can look forward to one of our Entered Apprentices telling a us a story. Speaking of our Special in March, it is currently slated for MWB Mike Sanders to do the Opening and Closing, his schedule permitting. MWB Ridge has thrown down the gauntlet and set the Bar high.

Also on our Special in February I had the privilege of presenting WB Dean Roettger his Life Time Membership in WA#4 as is tradition for our Immediate Past Master, about time too.

Brethren there are a number of events taking place in March, fi rst March 13-15 is our annual expedition to our sister lodge in Canada, Capilano Lodge 164 for their Installation of Offi cers. Please reach out and let me know if you are interested in attending there are a number of brothers that would like to organize some carpooling. That same weekend the Grand Master has scheduled his annual district 19 visit in Washougal at North Bank Lodge. Please check with the DDGM or our Secretary for times and Itinerary if it is not listed elsewhere in this trestle board.

On the 21st of March the District 19 retreat will be happening again in Washougal at North Bank Lodge. Please check with the DDGM or our Secretary for times and Itinerary if it is not listed elsewhere in this trestle board.

Finally Brethren, for our Stated Communication we will be continuing to address a few outstanding issues, namely the completion of the Annual Audit and the Budget for this year.

Look forward to seeing you at our Stated Communication until then safe travels brothers.

Leigh Cahill,

What a great month february has been, and a big Congratulations to our 2 new Master Masons raised 2/20/20, So happy you brothers.

Our dinner menu for March:Baked Teriyaki Salmon over Jasmine Rice, steamed mixed veggie for the stated meeting.

BBQ Country Ribs, Mac & Cheese, Coleslaw and Caesar salad for our special.

I’m very excited to see what this month has in store for us. The growth and brotherly love that we have is amazing! Watching new brothers advancing is the best!.

We still have work to do, I can’t wait for us to get some traction and start moving things in the best direction. Out of love comes the best creations and ideas in history, and out of our love for our Lodge and brothers, I’m sure we will create the best possible Lodge building that will bring honor to the craft for decades to come.

I leave you with a quote I found today:

“Masonic labor is purley a labor of love. He who seeks to draw Masonic wages in gold and silver will be disappointed. The wages of a mason are in the dealings with one another; sympathy begets sympathy, kindness begets kindness, helpfulness begets helpfulness, and these are the wages of a Mason.”

Guarding the West Gate

I have yet to meet a man who joined Freemasonry who isn’t in the Fraternity, in part, because of the fellowship involved. Said plainly, we like to “hang out with the guys.” However, Freemasonry is so much more. Being around good men certainly has a most positive effect and enable us to better ourselves but learning the lessons of Freemasonry.

One of the many lessons we receive as Masons can be found in the Entered Apprentice degree lecture. It’s about as simple and straight forward as possible; that we should never recommend a man to be made a Mason unless we strongly believe that he will reflect honor to our craft with the same fidelity we embrace. The purpose of Freemasonry was never to admit every man into the fraternity! The purpose is to take men who are already upstanding, good men, and through the principles of the fraternity make them better men. It was never intended to take every man and reform them into adequate men. This is part of the concept of “guarding the west gate” and is something all of us must be not only cognizant of but also practice all of the time.

On occasion, as secretary, I am approached by a Brother with remarks like: “Hey, send this guy a petition” or “Can you send this man a petition?” or “Where can I get a petition?”. Well, from what I can gather, petitions are available for all Masons of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons on the Grand View site …. as long as you’re registered. Once registered, clicking on “MyPortal” and then “Resources” and then under “Master Mason”, click on “Petition for the Degrees”. In a little box on the right, you’ll see the image of an eye. Click on it and VOILA, you’ll see the petition. You can also click on the image next to the eye to download this – you’ll need Adiobe Acrobat Reader to view or print it. And to make things easy, it’s “fillable”. In a colloquial sense – TA-DA!

Now that it is known how any Washington Lodge # 4 Brother can secure a petition, I don’t see a need to carry copies of it with me. Moreover, I’m reluctant anymore to do so as I want to strongly protect the west gate. Handing out petitions like may be done with the Eagles, or the Moose or the Elks or the Rotary is IMHO not adequately protecting our west gate. And I’m not casting aspersions upon those groups as they seek

I was thinking about the Great Architect and I realized that we are like cells in the body of the Great Architect. A healthy body has cells that work together for the good of the body.

Cancer cells are example of body cells that disregard the welfare of the rest of the body for their own benefi t. They take and take but they give nothing good back. They only grow in number until their waste kills the host. They don’t

clean up their waste. They leave that job to the other cells. It is the Ann Rand philosophy acting out on a cellular level.

The scientists have found chemicals that attack the cancer cells with things that are poison to them, but not as dangerous to the rest of the body. Though generally, the poisons hurt the body as they try to kill the cancer. The scientists are making new poisons that are safer to the rest of the body.

We humans have manufactured things like distilled alcohol, refi ned tobacco, refi ned sucrose and high fructose corn syrup. These things act as extreme poisons to certain individuals and as mere poisons to the rest of the body populace.

We are cells in the body of the Great Architect. He cares about us in ways that we don’t understand fully. We can trust it. Because like you and your own body, He wants the cells to prosper.

Hush. Be Still and Listen to the small voice of the Great Architect. It will be all right. Peace.

The Rough and Perfect Ashlarby Senior Midnight Freemason Contributor

WB Gregory J. Knott

At our last meeting of Homer Lodge No. 199, fellow Midnight Freemason Darin Lahners led a fantastic discussion on the topic of the rough and perfect ashlar. That night the attendees ranged in age from 20 to 80. As I listened to my fellow lodge brothers talk about this topic, I was very impressed with the insight that each of them brought to the discussion.

As Freemasons we venture onward toward a goal of perfection that is not achievable. Yet as one of the refl ection questions from the

Page 7: Washington Lodge 4washingtonlodge4.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/... · down the gauntlet and set the Bar high. ... will create the best possible Lodge building that will bring honor

page

discussion asked, if we cannot obtain perfection, then why would we strive for it?

The discussion regarding this question focused around the need for continued individual growth, working towards constant self-improvement or one risks becoming stagnant in life. Several brothers spoke about the spiritual growth that is important along life’s journey. Self-improvement as a goal provides the motivation for continued learning, challenging oneself to try new experiences and looking inward to a deeper understanding of one’s self.

Metaphorically the rough ashlar represents the imperfect individual, it represents you the Freemason. But as a Freemason you have been given the tools towards chipping away at the rough ashlar in pursuit of the perfect ashlar. In order to do your work as the Freemason you must use these tools, or you risk not improving your ashlar.

So, I challenge you to pick up your working tools and begin chipping away towards your perfect ashlar. Your journey in life will be so much more rewarding!

From an article published by The Grand Lodge of Washington on July 20, 2016 by Danny Done titled— “33 Historical Films Every Freemason Should See.” Done’s article provided small critiques of various films that were both fictional and historical (with artistic embellishments included in the historical accounts) that had some semblance either directly or indirectly to operative masonry as well as fraternal Freemasonry. This month I am seeking the correlation between the movie Kingdom of Heaven and Freemasonry.

Kingdom of Heaven was among the movies in Done’s article that I had already seen, perhaps approximately 10 times. However, I was recently stunned when speaking with a Brother Mason about many of the movies we’ve both watched, when he said— “I’ve never seen Kingdom of Heaven.” I guess it is never ok to presume that every Brother has watched every movie such as this one. That said— Kingdom of Heaven is indeed

a movie every Brother should see if not only for the history (embellishments included), the Knights Templar, and Salahuddin’s pyrrhic victory taking Jerusalem in 1187, but for its profound demonstrations of the unconditional fellowship shared between Brothers united by an oath or obligation.

Speaking of oaths and obligations, the oath taken in this movie rings with familiar tone— “Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong… that is your oath [FACE SLAP!!!], and that’s so you’ll remember it!

Lost in the action of the movies remains another quote that carries well meaning and correlates well to Freemasonry— “What is a man that does not make the world better”, [so mote it be].

Thus, if you are reading this corner of the this month’s trestle board, there should absolutely never be an excuse like-- — ”I’ve never seen Kingdom of Heaven”, to pass your lips, God wills it! I really enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven, and I think Brothers everywhere may agree, this is worthy of the MUST SEE category of movies for all Freemasons.

(At the start of this article I had only watched this movie approximately 10 times. It is now 11 as I am watching it again as I write this.)

A man is walking through the recreation ground of his local park when he notices a huge fight going on in full fury on the football field he is passing.

"What's going on?", he asks a spectator, watching from the side-lines.

The other replies "It's a match between the Masons and the Knights of Columbus." "What's the score?" asks the first man.

"I don't know. It's a secret."
