Mathematics Pathways Packet

Introduction to Mathematics Pathways Packet

In 2013, the Direct Transfer Agreement [DTA] between the Community and Technical Colleges

[CTC] and the four-year colleges and universities was modified, allowing CTC mathematics faculty

the opportunity to address their students’ needs in their precollege math programs. Due to the

relative independence of colleges within the CTC system, math faculty had flexibility in designing

their college’s precollege math programs to offer opportunities for students beyond the single

pathway to all of the entry college-level math courses.

The Mathematics Pathways Packet describes the course offerings in each of the math programs at

the CTCs in Washington State. A common flowchart was developed in order to illustrate more

readily the various models that CTCs have utilized to help their students gain access to college-level

math courses that transfer to four-year institutions.

Examinations of the CTCs websites and course catalogs were conducted to gather initial

information about the CTCs math programs. Then, interviews with faculty and staff at the CTCs

were performed to clarify and confirm the flowcharts that were developed. This packet provides

flowcharts for the CTCs’ math programs in 2016-17.

Each of the flowcharts illustrates the pathways within all of the CTCs' precollege math programs.

The pathways are defined by the college level math courses that match up with the courses

required in the DTA: Liberal Arts, Statistics, Elementary Education, Business, and STEM. The

pathways within the precollege math program are color coded to match the college level math

courses. Thus, by identifying the college level course that is needed for a student, one can follow

the path from the precollege course where the student initially places to the desired college level

course.

Math placement information is provided for each of the CTCs in a chart with each CTC flowchart.

Six common methods have been identified for math placement of students: placement test, high

school transcript, reciprocity, prior math class, SAT/ACT, and Smarter Balance. The chart also gives

the length of time the placement is valid as determined by the college.

Lastly, within the flowcharts of the four-year colleges and universities, information about

equivalency of CTC courses and credits for AP and IB testing is provided. The number of CTCs that

have the corresponding course designated as equivalent to the four-year institution’s course is

included in the flowchart. Since credit for AP and IB testing is determined by the four-year

institutions for CTCs transfer students, a chart of the four-year institution’s credits for scores on the

AP and IB test is provided.

I would like to thank Edmonds Community College, the Dana Center, and SBCTC for their support in

making this packet.
