The Wasson Way initiative will positively transform the neighborhoods that it connects and elevate the city’s overall livability. As with any major transportation project, the Wasson Way goals recognize that the impact of a path or roadway is much greater than just the movement of people. Substantial community benefit can be leveraged from the creative re-purposing of rail infrastructure for a public amenity as evidenced by the internationally significant Bloomingdale Trail project in Chicago and the High Line in New York City.
In order to achieve the greatest benefit to the community and sustain long-term use and stewardship, the Wasson Way project must provide the core infrastructure (pathway) paired with a thoughtful and strategic approach to knitting this infrastructure into surrounding neighborhoods. How does Wasson Way engage nearby shops, restaurants, parks, institutions, homes, businesses and the river system? How can it spur economic and community development? How will the character and image of the corridor change? And how can neighborhood life be revitalized with a vibrant new linear park?
