Delhi has miserably failed to manage its waste load. Only 15 per cent of Rs.1,350 crore that the three corporations spend on waste management and sanitation is spent on actual disposal. The rest goes into collection and transportation.

Government Policies & Allocations

>> The government’s thrust on solid waste management through the public private partnership (PPP) mode. The municipalities have also preferred to take the PPP route for solid waste projects.

>> JnNURM was launched in Dec05 to develop urban areas which included proper SWM as one of its main objectives. Under JnNURM, GOI sponsored 42 SWM projects worth USD 500 million (INR 22.5 billion) in 7 years till 2012 in 65 cities in PPP Mode (20% being GOI share).

>> Union Budget 2014 announced a 10 fold increase in budgetary provision for for the Pooled Municipal Debt Obligation Facility from Rs.5000 Cr to Rs.50,000 Cr underlining its focus on good infrastructure, solid waste management, sewage treatment and drinking water in urban areas.
