➤➤➤ Wastewater Screening

Screens for any application

Coarse Screen

Fine Screen

Mesh Screen

Screening is indispensable as the first stepof municipal and industrial waste watertreatment. Debris must be removed in order to protectsubsequent treatment pro cesses fromclogging and/or damage. Floating, settlingand suspended solids are retained, depend-ing on the bar spacing or perforation dia-meter, removed and finally discharged. Based on the same ROTAMAT® principle“screening – washing – conveying –dewatering in a single unit” a family ofROTAMAT® screens has been developed andsuccessfully introduced in the global marketof wastewater treatment. In recent yearsthe STEP SCREEN® and later the MAX® andLIQUID families have been added. We offerthe perfect HUBER screen for:➤ any installation condition➤ any flow rate➤ any spacing or perforation size➤ any application

➤➤➤ Wastewater Screening

Ultra-fine screens for new applicationsOur development of extremely fine screensfor the separation of very fine particlespermits new wastewater treatment applica-tions for screens. Reliable separation of hair and fibrousmaterial is necessary for efficient perform-ance of membrane bioreactors.

Another application for ultra-fine screens isriver and sea outfalls. Frequently, rawwastewater is only treated mechanicallyprior to being discharged to rivers or seas.Reduction of the COD/BOD loads from suchoutfalls is required for the protection of thereceiving water bodies if their self-cleaningcapacity is insufficient. These ultra-fine screens are able to removeundegradable and degradable, inorganicand organic material at the same time.Improved environmental protection isachieved by application of this new tech-nology at reasonable costs. Chemical coagulation can temporarily beadded to maintain the screening efficiencyand high effluent quality even during peakloads. For many regions with insufficientwastewater treatment, if any at all, ultra-fine screening is a quick and affordable firststep in the right direction.

➤➤➤ Filtration and Micro-Screening

Due to increased requirements on theeffluent quality of wastewater treatmentplants – both for direct and indirectdischarge – the operators of municipal andindustrial plants are forced to implementadditional treatment steps to ensure therequired effluent standards are met. TheHUBER Sandfilter CONTIFLOW® and HUBERDisc Filter RoDisc® are cost-effectivesolutions to meeting effluent standards invarious applications.

SandfiltrationThe HUBER Sandfilter CONTIFLOW® is adeep-bed type upflow filter that providescontinuous filter bed cleaning without theneed to backwash and interrupt thefiltration process for cleaning. TheCONTIFLOW® is available in a stainless steeltank or optionally in a concrete tank. Itsmodular design ensures the optimaltreatment of any throughput.

The Sandfilter is also used as a reactor fornutrient reduction:

Chemical phosphorus eliminationthrough precipitationPrecipitants, such as iron or aluminiumsalts, can be dosed directly into the filterinflow and transform the phosphoruscompounds contained therein into undis-solved phosphates. These are retained in the sand bed and discharged along with the wash water.

Biological nitrogen reduction throughdenitrificationUpgrading of sewage treatment plants is amajor field of application of post-denitri-fication in the Sandfilter. Due to the growthof biomass on the surfaces of the sandgrains the nitrates contained within theinflow are converted into gaseous nitrogen.

Disc FilterThe HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® is a gravity-flow filtration system and consists of up to35 vertical discs which are connected by ahorizontal shaft. Up to 65% of the discsurface is submerged in the filtrate. Thewastewater to be treated flows through thefilter discs from inside to outside. TheHUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® is frequentlyutilised for the separation of fine suspendedmaterial from biologically treated waste-water within municipal and industrialapplications, especially if secondaryclarifiers work insufficiently because theyare too small or the settling behaviour of the activated sludge is poor for example.

Typical fields of application of RoDisc® units:➤ Retention of filterable solids from the

secondary clarifier effluent➤ Reduction of micropollutants in

combination with powdered activecarbon (PAC)

➤ Preliminary filtration in drinking waterrecovery from surface waters and in UV disinfection applications

➤➤➤ Screenings Treatment

Unwashed screenings

Washed screenings

The first step in wastewater treatment isnormally the removal of solids from thewastewater flow by means of screens. The removed screenings contain householdwaste, faecal matter, toilet paper andmineral solids. The screenings volumedepends, not only on the separation size ofthe screen, but also on the type of sewersystem. The solids content of municipal screeningsvaries between 18 % and 25 %, dependingon the type of screen. Approximately 90 %of the solids are volatile (organic). Due to their very high water content, theirheterogenous composition and unaestheticappearance screenings must be treatedbefore they can be disposed of. The best method of screenings treat ment iswashing and compaction with a wash press.Fecal matter and other organic materialsare removed and returned into the waste-water flow.As a result, a good wash press in creases theBOD5 load to the biological treatment pro-cess by about 6 %. After washing, the screenings are com -pacted to reduce the water content andincrease the solids concentration. Dewatering is improved by the removal oforganic materials during washing. A goodwashpress can achieve a weight andvolume reduction of up to 80 %.

A wash press reduces the mass and volumeof the screenings and con sequently thedisposal costs.

➤➤➤ Grit Separation

For reasons of operating reliability of waste-water treatment plants it is necessary toseparate the grit trans ported with thewastewater and other mineral materialsfrom the digestable organic material. Incombined sewer systems, approxi mately 60 l of grit can be removed from 1000 m3

of wastewater.Separation of grit, gravel and other mineralmatter is required to increase the reliabilityof wastewater treatment plant operation.Good grit separation prevents operationalproblems, such as grit sedimentation inaeration tanks and digestors, reduces wearof equip ment, such as pumps or sludgedewa tering centrifuges, and avoids cloggingof sludge hoppers and sludge lines. While as much as possible of the mineralmatter should be removed, as much organicmatter as possible should remain in thewastewater. Testing of the grit capture rateis usually done with a grit particle size of 0.2 mm. The most common grit separating systemsin use are grit channels, circular grit trapsand vortex grit traps. Grit is either separated by gravity sedimen-tation (grit channels) or centrifugal force(circular and vortex grit traps). Scrapers orscrew con veyors are frequently used in gritchannels for grit collection. Pumps, inclinedscrew conveyors or integrated grit classify-ing screws are used for grit removal. Grit channels are normally provided withaeration to prevent sedimentation ofvolatile solids and reduce the organiccontent in the grit. In addition, aerationhelps to float part of the fat, oil and grease.According to Kalbskopf, detention time is animportant factor in the design of aeratedgrit channels. However, even the best

aerated grit channel cannot prevent highorganic contents in the removed grit slurry.Only a good grit washer can guaranteealmost complete separation of organicmaterial from grit and produce clean grit.

26

➤➤➤ Grit Treatment

Grit from grit traps of wastewater treatmentplants and grit from sewer and road clean-ing are heavily contaminated with organicmatter and debris. The high content oforganic material, the wide volatile solidsratio of 10 to 80 %, is the reason why suchgrit slurries do not dewater well. The solidsconcen tration remains somewhere between. The common performance criteria for thequality of grit removal are: The capture rateof 0.2 mm diameter grit particles; and thevolatile solids concentration of the removedgrit. The end product of excellent grittreatment is a reusable product with avolatile solids ratio of less than 3 % and awater content of below 10 %. Such grittreatment not only reduces the volume andmass of the removed grit, but also thedisposal costs. If the clean grit product isreused, e.g. for road bedding, costs for gritdisposal could be avoided.

Treatment of grit from wastewatertreatment plantsFor the treatment of grit from grit traps onwastewater treatment plants, HUBERCoanda grit washers have proven to be theunrivalled best option. HUBER grit washersachieve an outstanding grit product con -taining below 3 % volatile solids. It is so clean that cost-effective disposal and beneficial use iseasily possible, e.g. in civil engineeringworks. Regulations requiring certain grit qualitycriteria, depending on the kind of itsdisposal and/or reuse, are coming into effectin more and more countries. So far, HUBERCoanda grit washers have easily met allsuch requirements and will most likely do soin the future, because they have defined theindustry stan dards.

➤➤➤ Storm Water Treatment

An important part of our efforts to protectthe environment in general, and our waterresources in particular, is treatment ofstorm water and of overflows from com-bined sewer systems. The quality of manyrivers, lakes and seas has significantlyimproved following the upgrading of old andconstruction of new waste water treatmentplants. However, despite all these effortsand invest ment, there is still considerablepollu tion of our water bodies caused bycombined and sanitary sewer over flows(CSOs and SSOs) during storm events. For the purpose of specific environmentalprotection appropriate measures will haveto be taken in future to minimize theseproblems.

Screens for sewer overflowsHUBER screens are used to retain debrisand other coarse solids within the sewersystems and to prevent them fromoverflowing into receiving water bodiesduring storm events. We have a variety ofscreens suitable for application at seweroverflows. For such applications bar screensand perforated plate screens can beselected. We offer screens that are installedupstream of, on top, or down stream ofoverflow weirs. The optimal ly suited screenis selected depending on the required ordesired capture rate, flow requirement andstructural conditions. Our global presenceand experience allows our experts to pro -pose the best solution to any problem.

Storm water retention in sewer systemsAnother HUBER focus are intelligent andefficient systems for controlled storm waterretention in sewer systems. In order to saveinvestment and operating costs, it isessential to utilize the existing sewervolumes more effectively for storm waterretention by controlling the water levelswithin the system. In many cases, with suchan intelligent approach, construction ofadditional retention tanks can be avoided.Pollution by unavoidable storm wateroverflows can be minimized by installationof storm screens.

Discharged flow volume measurementMonitoring the utilisation of storm waterretention tanks and of overflows becomesever more important to allow optimising theuse of retention volumes and minimizingoverflow occurance and flows. It is essentialto be able to measure discharged stormwater flows and volumes. In the past thishas not been possible where a storm screenwas installed. This is now possible with ourequipment.

➤➤➤ Heating and Cooling with Wastewater

Energy recovery from wastewaterRight below the ground, in sewers, is ahidden and seldom used source of energy:our wastewater. Generally the temperatureof sewage is in the range of 12 to 20 °C.Even during winter the wastewatertemperature never drops below 10 °C, oronly for a few days. This makes wastewateran excellent heat source for the operation ofheat pumps.

Utilisation of wastewater as a heat source isespecially suitable to be applied in largebuildings, such as nursing homes, hospitals, schools or swimming baths. It is alsopossible to recover heat from the effluent ofsewage treatment plants and use it e.g. forsludge drying.

As a link between the wastewater and heatpump, a heat exchanger is required to ex-tract the heat energy contained within thewastewater. The heat exchanger transfersthe thermal energy from the wastewater tothe heat pump. The innovative HUBERThermWin® system which has beendeveloped especially for such applicationsuses the HUBER RoWin Heat Exchanger. The specific feature of this system is thatactual heat extraction from the wastewatertakes place above ground and not in thesewer. All system components are easilyaccessible and easy to maintain. For theexchange of heat directly in the sewer wehave developed the HUBER TubeWin HeatExchanger so that we can offer a suitableheat exchanger for any application.

Functional principle of the HUBER ThermWin®:A partial flow of the wastewater streamingthrough the sewer is passed through ascreen to remove the coarse material fromthe wastewater flow. Preceding screening ofthe wastewater is necessary to preventblocking of the heat exchanger. The pre-screened wastewater is lifted and flows bygravity through the above ground installedheat exchanger, the cooled wastewaterflows back to the sewer taking along theseparated screenings. Heating of thesecondary circuit, which is coupled with the heat pump, takes place inside the heatexchanger. The heat pump lifts the tem-perature to the requested level. For applications with contaminated mediathe HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin can beused. This type of heat exchanger has beendeveloped especially for such applicationsand excels with its superior heat transfercapacity and automatic preventive cleaningof the heat exchanger surfaces. Up to 80 %of the useful heat can be recovered from thewastewater and utilized economically.

➤➤➤ Sludge Treatment

Sewage sludge is continuously generatedon municipal and industrial wastewatertreatment plants during the process oforganic pollutant degradation. In the pastyears, the annual volume of municipalsewage exceeded 10 million tons drysubstance in Europe alone, and the trendcontinues upward. Due to the very differentrates of connection in the individualcountries, with e.g. a rate of virtually 100 %in the EU member states, and thereforeregionally very different sewage sludgevolumes it is only understandable that thereare controversial approaches as regardssludge disposal ways.

In some countries, due to new legislationand eco-political consideration, somedisposal methods have been prohibited orat least restricted, such as landfilling ofsewage sludge. For many states therecovery of materials contained withinsewage sludge still plays an important role. This applies to both landscaping and sludgespreading on agricultural land.

The fertilization effect of sewage sludge and especially its phosphorus content isnormally sufficient to cover the nutrientsdemand of typical agricultural land. On the other hand, there are a lot of countrieswhere the agricultural application of sewagesludge is met with much scepticism due toits potential heavy metal pollution andcontent of organic pollutants, such as PFT. In these countries there has been a cleartrend towards concepts for thermal sewagesludge treatment for some years already, partly combined with the approach torecover the phosphorus contained withinsewage sludge. Against this political and

economic background it is understandablethat the sewage sludge disposal issue canbe discussed quite controversially. Even ifthere is no generally accepted concept forfuture sewage sludge disposal existingpresently, adequate sludge pre-treatment isrequired with all concepts described above.

A major pre-treatment step is to reduce thewater content of the sludge. Sewage sludgegenerated on wastewater treatment plantstypically shows a DS between 1 and 5%depending on where exactly it is generated. The average DS content of digested sludgeis 45 %. This means that one cubic metre ofdigested sewage sludge contains 950 l,which would permanently have to betransported without prior dewatering. The major benefits of dewatering and dryingare weight and volume reduction and theincreased thermal value.

Consequently, the process chain that allowsfor later thermal utilisation of dried sewagesludge comprises the steps of prior screen-ing, thickening and drying.

➤➤➤ Mechanical Sludge Treatment

Mechanical sludge treatment primarilycomprises the processes of sludgescreening, thickening and dewatering.

Sludge screeningSludge screening is a mechanical treatmentstage that primarily achieves homogenisa-tion and separation of foreign matter andensures therefore undisturbed furthertreatment of the sludge, irrespective of thesubsequent treatment methods applied.Operating problems, such as clogging ofpipelines, pumps, heat exchangers ordownstream filtration units, tressing onstirrers and aeration plants, scum in settlingand sludge tanks as well as damage indownstream drying units, can reliably beprevented by using HUBER sludge screens.

The STRAINPRESS® is a horizontal, pipe-shaped coarse material separator. Thecoarse material is separated continuouslyunder pressure and periodical cleaning ofthe screening zone by backwashing isthereby not required.

Sludge thickeningWith regard to economical further treatmentand disposal of sewage sludge, it isnecessary to reduce the sludge volumesproduced in the course of the wastewatertreatment process. The volume reduction isachieved by separation of parts of thesludge liquor at different points in thesludge treatment process chain. The mainfield of application of thickening systems isvolume reduction of primary and excesssludge prior to stabilisation. In addition tocommon sludge thickening systems, e.g.belt and drum thickeners, HUBER offers also

its optimized own developments, such asscrew and disc thickeners. The selection ofthe most suitable technology for individualapplications depends on project-specificparameters, such as throughput capacity oroperating and investment costs, but also onother criteria, such as operating reliability, flexibility and process complexity.

Sludge dewateringSludge produced in municipal and industrialwastewater treatment plants requiresdewatering prior to further treatment orutilisation. In view of increasing sludgedisposal costs it has become necessary toconcentrate the sludge to a high solidscontent. HUBER offers for this purposecommonly known systems for continuoussludge dewatering, e.g. belt filter presses, but has also developed a machine forsmaller and medium-sized wastewatertreatment plants, the HUBER Screw Press. It is this wide range of products combinedwith many years of experience that enablesHUBER to select the best suited technologyfor each individual application.

➤➤➤ Thermal Sewage Sludge Drying and Utilisation

Sewage sludge disposal is becoming anincreasing problem, landfilling was pro-hibited in 2005. Spreading sludge onagricultural land is in dispute and also itsuse for landscaping is no long-term solution. As all these methods cannot guarantee thereliable removal of contaminants from thematerial cycle, thermal utilisation remainsas best possible alternative.

Sewage sludge consists of more than 95%water that requires transport, disposal orfurther processing. If the water content isreduced to 10% or less, costs can be re-duced significantly. But a lot of energy isrequired for drying. The energy demand ofavailable drying systems varies, as well astheir operation and end product quality.Which system is suitable for the individualsewage treatment plant needs to be clari-fied for each specific case. HUBER has thesuitable drying method with optimal usageof energy for any application.

Solar sewage sludge drying

The basic principle is sewage sludge dryinginside a greenhouse. This solution allows forcontinuous system operation so that thesludge bed in the greenhouse remainsconstant. Due to the special features of thesludge turning assembly, particularly thebackmixing function, an open-pored andslightly wet sludge bed is generated thatcauses neither odour problems nor un-necessary dust loading.

The sludge is fed manually, with a wheelloader for example, or automatically bymeans of special conveying units, directly

from the dewatering system. The driedsludge can be stored in a ground deposit atthe end of the drying hall or mechanicallytransported directly to a loading station.

The HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® is theheart of the HUBER SRT drying system. Itconsists of a rotating double shovel which isused for two different motion sequences. The sludge turning function ensures mixing, breaking up, aeration and transport of thesludge. The second function is the transportof sludge in the turner shovel, i.e. thesludge turner takes up some sludge at adefined point and transports it inside itsshovel to another point. This ensures thatdry sludge is back-mixed into wet sludgeand sludge feeding and removal can takeplace at the same gable side of the hall.

The HUBER SRT system is not only suitablefor pure solar drying but also ideal to becombined with a high performance floorheating or hot air blower. Optimized withsuch a heating, the SRT system can be usedfor all year round, season-independent solarsewage sludge drying. This eliminates theneed for storage facilities for wet sludge andsaves the floor space required for solardrying without additional heating as solardrying alone is unable to dry wet sludgeduring winter.

Belt drying

The excellent product quality and reliabilityof the HUBER belt dryer are the results of aspecial sludge pelletising technology. TheHUBER Belt Dryer BT operates as a two-beltdryer at medium temperatures. The dryer isable to produce a dust-free granulate with adry substance in excess of 90 %. Optimalusage of energy and combination ofdifferent energy sources ensures aneconomical dryer operation. This is anexperience HUBER has made for more than10 years, since the company started tocommit itself to sludge drying solutions.

Thermal utilisation with sludge2energy

The energy self-sufficient sludge2energysystem for sewage sludge utilisation isbased on the combination of a mediumtemperature dryer and subsequentincineration in a fluidized bed furnace.

Sustainable waste management is achievedthrough decentralized sewage sludgeutilisation and energy recovery directly onthe sewage treatment plant. The generatedheat is used for sludge drying. Throughenergy self-sufficient sludge drying andincineration the sludge disposal volume isminimized to approximately 10%. The ashresidue is an ideal source for later phosphorusrecovery.

➤➤➤ Membrane Technology / MBR /Wastewater Reuse

Membrane bioreactors for any throughput

Inexpensive wastewater disinfectionWastewater treatment in municipal andindustrial plants can require large areas, bigtanks, expensive odour control equipment.Where freight and loads vary widely, theperformance of the treatment processes isoften poor.

All these factors result in heavy impacts inthe form of contamination of our environ-ment, very limited possibilities of waterreuse, and also high construction, operationand maintenance costs. Membrane Bio-Reactors (MBR) need by upto 70 % less volume which results in con-struction cost savings. MBRs have an im-

proved performance. Clarifiers are elimi-nated and therefore the problems that scumor sludge could overflow from a clarifier.Existing structures can be retrofitted andtheir performance increased. Existingprimary and secondary clarifiers can bemodified and used for example for storageor redundancy. The effluent of MBR systems complies withall current standards. The effluent does notcontain bacteria and other germs. It can beused as service water or for irrigation. Evena MBR permeate of drinking water qualitycan be achieved by adding further treat-ment stages.

WASTE WATER Solutions

51

For more than 15 years HUBER has beenheavily involved in membrane technologyfor municipal and industrial wastewatertreatment. More recently, membranebioreactors (MBRs) have increasingly beenused also for decentralized "green building"solutions.

In the meantime we have continuouslyimproved the design of our products, wehave optimized their performance andadapted manufacturing to the increasingdemand in the market. We offer singlefiltration units but, if requested, we alsoprovide modern MBR overall solutionsincluding flexible overall service packages.

We provide all our membrane units with top-quality ultra-filtration membranes andtherefore combine best effluent quality withlow cleaning and maintenance costs andlong life. Compared to hollow fibre membranesthey also have the advantage that noplaiting can occur and a 3 mm perforatedscreen is sufficient as wastewater pre-treatment system.

HUBER VRM® units excel with their highcapacity (up to 250 m3/h per unit) andabove-average high packing density. Aspecial feature of these membrane units istheir rotation that allows sequential buthigh-intensity air scouring of theirmembrane surfaces. The specific scouringair flow is as low as 150 l/m2h because thescouring air is supplied by air tubes to theVRM's central axis. Furthermore, the air canbe blown in at only half the depth requiredotherwise. We achieve improved scouring ofthe membrane surface, with comparativelylow power consumption and infrequentchemical cleaning.

The produced permeate from all ourmembrane filtration systems is hygienicallysafe, odourless and free of particles. The permeate quality meets all presentlyapplicable standards and can be reused asservice water for various purposes (irrigation, toilet flushing, cleaning, cooling, etc.).

Every stainlesssteel product, before it leaves our factory, ispassivated by full sub mergence in an acid(pickling) bath for perfect surface finishingand corrosion protection.

Potable water is a most important re sourcethat should be available for all people insufficient quantity and quali ty. We offer thehighest quality pro ducts for the treatment ofdrinking water.Drinking water must be pure, i.e. clear andfree of pathogens, odour and colour. Tocomply with these require ments certainstandards have to be met during collection, treatment and distribution of the drinkingwater. Many waterworks, however, do not meetthese standards and are a danger to ourhealth and environment. It is important toidentify such risks as early as possible toprevent further damage. We have developed systems for water-works that prevent contamination ofdrinking water, such as special air filteringsystems. As the water level in drinking waterreservoirs changes, air is drawn in and out.If the air entering the reservoir containsparticles, micro-organisms like germs, spores, pollen or fungi, the drinking waterbecomes con taminated. Our air filtersystems, with integrated filter media, retaindust and other fine particles and thereforeprevent contamination and health hazards.
