“Proud Father” by Steve Morris

As Steve Morris looks over his collection of natural objects, he is searching for just the right item for his next painting. He chooses a bird nest; small, delicate and beautifully imper-

fect.

“This one is it,” he says. He recalls the Japanese principle of Wabi-Sabi, the aesthetic ideal of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. This ideal has guided much of Steve’s work from the very beginning. He brings this vision of the natural world to his watercolor paintings.

Gently turning the bird nest around in his hands, Steve pays close attention to the extraordi-nary details of this ordinary, discarded object. In his paintings he strives to show the artistry in any of the subjects he paints. Whether he is painting a vibrant, elaborate floral or an earthy, fragile bird nest, Steve expresses the beauty that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Steve began painting in 2009 after retiring from his career in graphic design and marketing. Transparent watercolors and graphite are the mediums he uses most. His work has been exhibited locally and nationally. He has had a piece included in the Susan K. Black Foundation’s Blossom II, Art of Flowers International Exhibition and has received the Watercolor Missouri International 2013 Members Award.

Steve is a Signature Member of the St. Louis Watercolor Society and the Missouri Watercolor Society. He is also a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Chesterfield Arts, and is a founding member of Art Group 360. Steve is part owner of the OA Gallery in Kirkwood, Missouri. His work can be seen at the OA Gallery as well as regular gallery shows in association with the Art Group 360. To see more of Steve’s work, please visit ArtGroup360.com.

I have collected nature's offerings for as long as I can remem-ber. Along the way I've gathered flowers, seed pods, sea-shells, taxidermy, and bird nests among other things. My eyes

naturally see the unusual, natural objects that casual observers may miss.

My home studio is a comfortable retreat furnished with a large oriental rug, an overstuffed leather chair, and an antique drafting table where I do my painting. It was my father's table and I'm honored to be able to use it. I appreciate the quality and integ-rity of handcrafted, old things.

In my space I surround myself with the gifts nature has provided to me. Shelves and tabletops contain many twigs, seed pods, fos-sils and dried flowers while a variety of books try to crowd them out.

If you look closely in my 'Cabinet of Curiosities' you will see an ever changing selection of bird nests, eggs, assorted bones, feathers, and of course more books. It's in this intriguing room where I do my work of creating something permanent out of imperfect and impermanent subjects.

Nature’s Amazing Builders by Steve Morris

I have always been fascinated with bird nests and the skill and in-genuity required to build them. Since I've started painting nests others have been collecting them for me. I'm always amazed at the large variety of nests and the abundance of materials used to create them.

I'm often asked if I change or modify the nests to fit my needs and the answer is always NO. I don't believe anyone can improve on nature. I try to showcase these incredible structures. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to build a nest using only a beak and two small feet.

I typically work on 140 lb. Arches coldpress watercolor paper that I dry mount to acid free foam board. This step avoids the ripples and undulations that commonly happen when painting with watercolors. This also saves a lot of time in prepping.

I use a range of Winsor & Newton paints and a selection of brushes ranging from size 000 up to 4. I have found that a Faber Castell 2 1/2 HB pencil works best and doesn't smear or drag when I wet it. For masking I use a combination of Grafix brand extra tack prepared frisket film, available in sheets or rolls, Win-sor & Newton Masking Fluid, and a Masquepen.

I start each painting with the bird nest in hand and several photo enlargements to show details. The composition is very important to me. I spend a lot of time on this to get the best placement. I then decide on the background and which technique or application I will use. Once these decisions are made I do a very precise, detailed drawing directly on my paper. If my piece includes a background I will put it in at this stage.

My painting process begins by masking out my drawing using the prepared frisket film often used in airbrushing. Once the mask is cut I use a bone burnisher to rub the edges down and start laying in the washes, gradually building them to the desired color or effect I want. I work this way be-cause if anything can go wrong it usually happens at this point and the only thing I will have lost is the drawing.

Now that the background is in I pick a starting point such as a twig, branch, or straw etc. to begin painting. I work one element at a time so I can focus on the detail in each individual piece and take it to a finished stage. I usually lay in a base color on damp or moist paper that's not too saturated. I then add in the details using more of a dry brush technique.

Once all the elements are painted I come back and put in the shadows building them up to the desired density. This method allows for subtle details to show through even when the shadows are quite dark. I have found that this approach to painting works well for me on various subjects and allows for the detail I strive to achieve.

My paintings are a personal response to each subject I paint. Because I work with the actual object in my hands my senses of sight, touch, and smell are engaged in a unique way. Often, just moving the subject into a new position gives me a whole new appreciation for its creation and offers me an exciting new composition.

There is impermanence in nature that I try to capture in my paintings. One week a nest is full of tiny, baby birds and the next week the birds have flown away and the nest abandoned. Nature has given us an amazing selec-tion of subjects to paint and I hope my paintings help people appreciate all these small works of art.
