Message to Graduating Students

Your collective presence here this evening represents an enormous amount of cumulative effort and accomplishment. In addition to taking pride in this fact, you may want to use this moment to reflect upon all those who have helped you reach this milestone, for there are surely many. Tonight and the days ahead would be a good time to thank them -your parents especially - even as you receive their warm congratulations. Rather paradoxically, although it is your night, it is not all about you.

It goes without saying that your New College teachers have played an especially important role in your success. Yet in light of all the criticisms teachers seem to receive these days, I'm going to say it anyway. Particularly during a period of severe budgetary constraint, committed teaching suggests a strong sense of vocation - which is to say, for those who do it well, teaching is not just a job. In ways both explicit and implicit, you have benefitted beyond measure from the vocational commitment of your New College teachers, who include those many College staff members who have given you their time, energy and concern.

The lingering effects of this influence will help shape who you are in the years ahead, deepening your sense of the benefits of the small liberal arts college experience.

We are grateful in turn to all of you for what you have brought to the campus during your time here, beginning with your intellectual curiosity - the very thing that makes New College tick. Surely you have my personal thanks and congratulations, along with my hope that you, too, will discover your own sense of vocational commitment.

Looking Back, Looking Forward: Retrospective and Prospective

It is not surprising that the class of 2012 upholds the tradition of honors and achievements that has become the norm among graduates of New College of Florida, the state's honors college. Among this year's graduates are four Fulbright Scholars, for a total of 69 Fulbrighters since 1967 - and 50 in the last ten years. Members of this year's class have garnered other highly competitive awards, such as National Science Foundation summer grants, a record three U.S. State Department Critical Language Awards, Goldwater and Gilman Scholarships, two French Government Teaching Assistantships, and numerous generous graduate school awards.

The Class that entered in Fall 2008 experienced the bottoming out of the economy and the initial effects of the first budget cuts that New College was destined to endure for five years. Despite the severe downturn, state funds for construction of the new Academic Center, a Black Box theater in Hamilton Center and the Seawall Replacemep.t were secure. The 2012 graduates made the Black Box a hub of student activity and were the first to occupy "ACE" in Fall 2011 , the first facility ever constructed on campus dedicated to classrooms and faculty offices, as well as our first LEED-certified gold building.The student body taxed themselves with a "Green Fee" and supported numerous landscaping and improvement projects, from planting student gardens to sowing wildflower seeds along Dort Drive.

A Public Archaeology Lab (PAL), built primarily with federal ftmds, rose near the Anthro Lab. Some members of the graduating class contributed to the time capsule buried near the PAL, due to be opened on the College's 100thAnniversary in 2060.The 50thAnniversary and all-class Reunion Weekend in February 2011 was a major event, with a rich series of programs and events celebrating the coming of age of New College. Novo Collegians young and not-so-young found they shared the benefits of the same magic formula of independent study, guided by dedicated faculty, leading to exceptional careers.

The Sail Team established the first intercollegiate sport at New College by joining the Intercollegiate Sailing Association. Graduating students have walked for AIDS, Heart Disease and Breast Cancer prevention/treatment. They participated in Take Back the Night, the Clothesline Project, Constitution Day, Day of the Dead, Dance Tutorial, Theater of the Oppressed and New Music New College; they invited the Suncoast Mobile Bloodmobile to campus. This class has helped govern New College, with student representatives on committees of the Board ofTrustees and of the faculty, as well as the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, the BOT Presidential Search Committee and the President's Committee on Diversity. They convinced the faculty and administration to devote a whole day in February 2012 to an all-college Teach-In on diversity and gender issues.

Just as the 4,770 New College graduates who preceded them, this year's class of graduates promises to make its mark on our nation and the world as accomplished scholars, entrepreneurs, civic leaders, educators, artists, journalists and professionals of every type. As a college, we welcome them to the noble ranks of Novo Collegian alumnae/i. Congratulations!
