Wauchope High School Leaders 2019

Congratulations Shannah Schroeder

Rotary Public Speaking and Lions Club Youth of the Year

Last Tuesday night the Rotary Cluster Public Speaking Competition

took place at the Westport Club in Port Macquarie. Wauchope High

School was represented by 2019 Year 12 student Shannah

Schroeder who has previously won the local Wauchope competition.

Shannah was the second speaker

and spoke about courage and what

that means in the present climate.

She presented a very persuasive argument which impressed the

audience of Rotarians. There were four

speakers who all spoke with eloquence.

Each presenter was asked a series of, searching, on the spot questions

whilst the adjudicators tallied the scores. Shannah’s questions put her

under the acid burner but after a few thoughts she provided answers that

were to the presenter’s satisfaction.

Alas, Shannah was unsuccessful in attaining another win. The adjudicators

were very complementary to all speakers stating that they did not know

there were such impressive young individuals in the district.

A good night was had by all and Shannah even made some new friends

across the local school spectrum. Shannah was supported by Mr Houlahan.

On Wednesday evening Shannah won the Lions Club Youth of the Year

Quest for the Port Macquarie -Tacking Point club. It was a two stage process that consisted a rigorous

interview process, impromptu general knowledge questioning and a five minute speech on a topic of

their own choice. Shannah, was able to impress the judges at all levels and now has the opportunity

showcase her rhetorical skills, March next year as she has now progressed to the next level as Region

Youth of the Year. On this occasion Shannah was supported by Mr Leighton.

Thank you to both members of the teaching staff for supporting Shannah.

Sunday, the 11th November marked 100 years

since the end of “the war to end all wars”, World

War 1. Wauchope High School played a major part

in the sombre ceremony that took place at the

Wauchope War Memorial on the day.

A small procession of our students participated in

the march that took place from the Wauchope RSL

Club to the Memorial. Four of our students were

also the official flag bearers for the RSL. These

were Georgia McKinnon, Lacey Hearfield, Corban

Fraser and Tyler Mathews.

There were a number of speeches given by local dignitaries who talked of the sacrifices made by the

young Australians who volunteered to defend King and Country. The Wauchope High School captains

gave the keynote address. Caitlin Miller spoke of the battles fought and the impact on Australians as a

whole. Flynn Warburton brought this impact down to a local level focusing on four local boys who went

away and the experiences they had whilst far from home in this largely European conflict. Their speech,

written by the 2019 HSC Modern History class and enabled by Mr Bedwell, was heartfelt and delivered

with aplomb. Indeed, a number of the audience spoke about what a beautiful speech it was.

The day was warm but our discomfort in the heat was nothing compared to what our soldiers suffered in

the war. The large number of memorial boards that listed the names of the volunteers who served, and

died really drove home the impact of the war on the local community. Thank you to all the Wauchope

High School community who participated on the day.

Mr Houlahan.

Farewell to Yong Jeong Middle School

On 15 November, Year 8-1 Geography had their last

video conferencing session with students from Yong

Jeong Middle School. The intercultural exchange program

provided our students with unique opportunity to connect to

students in South Korea to learn about their culture and

history, and form new friendships. For 8-1 student Ella

Martin it was an incredible experience, ‘we got to learn

about their culture and everyday life, and it was fascinating

listening to their presentations. I’d like to visit South Korea

one day’. Gift boxes from Wauchope High and Yong Jeong

Middle School were sent in September in order to be

opened at the last meeting. Antonia Visvikis and Emily

Gorely led the farewell party, distributing gifts to our excited

students and thanking their Korean counterparts. All the

students celebrated their farewell with a vigorous K-Pop

dance. Piper Aquel said, ‘it was a really great

experience, it’s something that not many students get to

do and so it’s really special for us’. A big thank you to

those students who were presenters for the program:

Charli Caller, Ella Martin, Emily Gorely, Emily Bell, India

Evans, Kiara O’Brian, Amanda Swinnerton, Keali

Newman, Nick Preece, Breanna Kennett, Antonia

Visvikis, Ebony Baker and Texas Cox.

Thelma the Unicorn Thursday 13th December 5:30

Year 12 Formal

What a lovely night we all had! Our Year 12 Graduating year were resplendent in their gowns

and suits, how wonderful they all looked.

Our guest speaker was Mr Steven Gates, an adventure who makes Dick Smith look like an

amateur.

He spoke to the students about taking advantage of opportunities presented to them, always

trying their best and from the point of view of an employer, what makes a good employee.

The night was rounded off with Mr Starr, the Year 12 Year Advisor, giving a very funny speech

imparting pearls of wisdom and showing his ‘toolbox for living away from mum and dad’. Items

included rubber gloves, a demonstration on how to use a toilet brush and washing up brush and

of course a can of WD40.

YEAR 9 DRAMA NEWS!

Year 9 Drama students performed their monologues for assessment in Week 4 this term.

They were a range of drama, comedy, romance and horror. The students worked hard to deliver engaging and entertaining pieces that were well rehearsed and complex.

I was blown away by the quality of the work and was very proud of the young actor’s performances.

They are now focusing on their roles for the up and coming production of Thelma the Unicorn.

We hope to see you all there!
