Of the nearly 7,100 students currently enrolled in Wauwatosa Schools, approximately 72% are Caucasian, 17.7% are African-American, 5% are Asian, 4.3% are Hispanic, and 1% are Native American.

Of the minority student population, 58.4% are Wauwatosa residents, while 41.6% are non-resident students.

Minority students account for 16.3% of all students who reside in Wauwatosa, compared to 4% in 1991.

At the end of the ’07-’08 school year, the LRP Diversity team looked ahead to potential future tasks and activities:

Devise an in-service plan to:Examine and address the needs of a diverse

Incorporate accountability measures in administration and staff positions to reflect and incorporate the cultural competency model in policies, practices and programs.

At the end of the ’07-’08 school year, the LRP Diversity team recommended:

Form an ongoing broadly-based diversity team/task force that is composed of an administrator, staff member and parent from each school in the district, as well as central office staff, board members and community members.

Convene a diversity summit to examine the nature of diversity in the district and community, and develop strategies to address curricular, home school communication and staff preparation issues.

Reframe the dialogue around diversity from the context of "students

conduct themselves in a safe, respectful and ethical manner" to the larger context of positive and empowering school climate and culture.

The consortium includes suburban north shore school districts in the Milwaukee and Cardinal Stritch University's Leadership Center. The consortium grew out of efforts with Whitefish Bay’s Parents Advocating for Cultural Equity and Excellence in Education (PACE3).

During the ’08-’09 school year, representatives of PACE3

met with representatives from consortium school districts as well as Cardinal Stritch’s Leadership Center to help frame the possible goals and activities of the consortium:

Collect, examine and disseminate data on school climate, cultural competence, and student achievement

Convene school districts' stakeholders, including parents, to establish a common language, build relationships and trust, and create a compelling vision of cultural equity and educational excellence.

Cultivate mindsets and behaviors that support equity and achievement and that ultimately leads to a sustained system and climate change that benefits all students.

The following steps were recommended in January

2009 as a starting point for the consortium:

Relationship Building - Host speaker events and book discussions that bring people together to build trust, increase awareness, and create a community of champions that work together collaboratively to achieve common goals.

Data Collection - Gather qualitative and quantitative data that illustrate the current picture of school climate, cultural competence, and student achievement.

The following steps were recommended in January 2009 as a starting point for the consortium:

Education & Development - Create a leadership development experience that brings together teams from the North Shore School Districts to examine personal and collective beliefs around race, culture, ethnicity and gender. This would be based on research through the lens of leadership, learning and service.

Support & Sustainability - Provide coaching support for school district teams as they learn, apply new skills, and work toward personal and system change. Coaches will encourage, support, and help teams to hold themselves accountable for accomplishing indentified personal and collective goals.

Spring 2009 efforts in Wauwatosa:

May and June of 2009 schools in the consortium—including Wauwatosa School District—elected to survey middle school and high school students regarding school engagement.

At the middle school level, students completed the Survey of Middle School Student Engagement developed by Dr. Tony Frontier.

At the high school level, students completed a national survey, the Indiana University High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE).
