Year 10 Career Planning Cancer Research Students have been engaged in Career Education, in preparation for their final two years of secondary education. In May they attended the school’s own Careers Expo. Work Experience ran from 19 - 22 June with over 200 Year 10 students experiencing a diverse range of occupations, including nursing, veterinary science, administration, mining, the building industry, education, child care and retail. Students travelled all over North Brisbane and into the city for their placements. Employers were impressed with the maturity and enthusiasm of our students. Well done and thanks to employers for their support . On Monday, 16 July students will be presented with a range of subject information to assist their plans for 2013. On Wednesday 8 August, parents and students are to attend the Subject Selection Evening at school. The SET plan process will be finalised at interviews on Tuesday, 21 August where parents, students and a teacher will meet to individually discuss career plans and make 2013 subject selections. Any questions, contact Miss Bencsevich (A/HOD Senior Schooling) Ph: 33500337. The SPARQ-ed Project is a University of Queensland project for students to investigate the role of extracellular matrix adhesion in prostate cancer metastasis. In this project, students plated PC3-GFP and PC3-PTRF-PC3 cells on surfaces which have been coated with poly-L lysine, collagen, laminin or fibronectin in order to estimate the ability of these cells to attach to the matrix using spectrophotometric analysis of lysed stained cells. In addition, students studied the morphology of cells attached to the ECM proteins and the distribution of integrins in those cells that use immunofluorescence targeting β1-integrin. Year 12 student Casey Chamberlain was selected and attended this project in the first week of the school holidays. Participation in this project has allowed Casey to gain valuable insight into medical research and will assist her in making decisions about a future career in this field. Congratulations on your selection and participation Casey. Dear Parents, We begin this semester with a great deal of anticipation about a new deal for public education and education funding in general. The much heralded Gonski Report, released earlier this year, flagged the need to increase education funding substantially using a needs based approach. In simple terms it could mean an increase of over two million dollars for Wavell High. These funds could be used to employ more teachers, to reduce class sizes and to provide much more assistance and resources for students thereby enabling even better outcomes. I urge all families to register their support for legislation to be enacted this year so that the new funding can start from 2014. Please see the school website for more information and the Gonski link to register. www.wavellshs.eq.edu.au . Semester report cards should have been received in the mail by all parents as these were posted on Friday, 6 July. If you have yet to receive a report, please contact the school for assistance. The mail out included information about online bookings for the Parent Teacher Night which will occur next Tuesday, 17 July from 3:30pm to 7:00pm. You may contact Mrs Minter , on 33500301, if you have had any difficulties with making bookings – bookings close Monday, 16 July at 9:00am. This closure of bookings is to allow teachers time to prepare for interviews. The semester results were again very pleasing – I am particularly pleased with how well our Year 8s have settled and performed in their first semester at high school. I enjoyed reading and signing so many great Year 8 report cards. Students were engaged in academic monitoring today to review their individual performance and put strategies in place to build on their success. I look forward to the celebration afternoon event that the top five per cent of students and families will be invited to attend on Tuesday 31 July at 2:00pm. There are a range of special events scheduled for this term including; School, District and Regional Athletics; the annual Ski Trip; our Year 12 Formal; the Queensland Core Skills Test; a number of University Open Days; Year 10 SET Plan Interviews; Year 8 & 10 Subject Selection Evening; Literacy Olympics; school photographs; several drama, dance and music performances; district and regional winter sports finals and Rugby League finals. These events are in addition to the main focus for all Wavell students: the unrelenting quest for continuous academic improvement. It is important for all that Wavell continues to be a vibrant and exciting place of learning. Athletics Carnival

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND RESEARCH STUDY • The University is researching how young people regulate

their emotions. • UQ is looking for 14 to 16 years old, females interested in

taking part. • The study takes about 90 minutes and as thanks

participants will receive a $15 JB Hifi voucher. • The study can be done either at UQ or at their home or

whatever may be most convenient. If interested contact Julieta Castellini by email;

[email protected]

Our Annual Inter-house track and Field Carnival will be held next week. Pre-carnival events to be conducted on Wednesday 18 July, Lessons 1&2 include; 1500 meters, Javelin, Triple Jump and 13 & 14 years High Jump. Students participating in these events must have nominated. Competitors will then go to normal classes for Lessons 3 and 4. On Wednesday 18 July, normal classes run for all other students that are not part of this pre-carnival competition. On Thursday, 19 July the Annual Wavell State High Inter-house Track and Field Athletics Championship for 2012 will be held. All students are expected to attend for this compulsory whole of school event. Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform for the day and may wear their house colours at school (coloured hair spray is not appropriate). Last year’s event was very successful with over 80 per cent of students participating in the contest with others enjoying supporting their house. This year’s championship looks to be bigger and brighter given the competitiveness of Wavell’s students and their enthusiasm for physical activity. Can 2011 winners Keren House hold off the challenges of Alamein, Burma, and Tobruk houses this year? Who will the winners be in the Age Championships for 2012? Events will commence at 9.30am with a variety of track and field events scheduled for the whole day. The school has a great carnival atmosphere on the day and a variety of red foods will be available for purchase. Parents are welcome. The House trophy will be presented in the afternoon. We look forward to an exciting day of athletics in the run up to the 2012 London Olympics. Let the games begin!

On Thursday, 14 June, Year 8 Science students had the chance to listen to Mr Andrew Banks – a coal geologist with Xstrata Coal speak about what he does as a geologist and how he became a geologist. The students were able to ask questions about mining that were raised in their last assignment and have them answered by a professional.

Year 8 Camp

Instrumental and vocal music students and teachers Ms Piggott, Mrs Jones and Mr Bell enjoyed a fantastic tour of schools in Northern Queensland. They visited a number of schools across the region and impressed all with their polished performances.

North Queensland Music Tour

Year 9 student Gabby Millar played in the U15 State Championships for Squash. She came eighth. She is in the Queensland training squad. Well done.

In the last week of Term Two, over 250 of our Year 8 students, along with prefects and teachers enjoyed three days at Noosa. Students faced a variety of challenges which included kayaking or stand-up paddling, high ropes, beach games and initiatives and even rock climbing. The camp went very well. The weather proved very kind despite some chilly starts. Students who attended are commended on their attitude and behaviour. The days went fast and many wished they could stay and holiday on camp! Thanks to our prefects for their leadership and to the teachers and Chaplain Sarah, for support. A special thank you to our Coordinator, Mrs Hickman for her detailed organisation. Wavell will return next year to Noosa!
