WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2011!

Be a Virtual Rider in 2011!

Enjoy all that Bike MS : Waves to Wine has has to offer without riding. Even if you cannot join

us for the ride, you can still join the movement to create a world free of MS by fundraising through

our online Virtual Rider Program. Just register (you can participate individually or join a team)

and select “Virtual Rider” when registering..

Pre-Event Fundraising DeadlineAll riders will need to fulfill their $350 minimum by the day of the event in order to be able to ride in 2011. This fundraising minimum is in addition to the registration fee paid at the time of registration and applies to all riders, regardless of age. You will not be able to pick up your rider packet until the minimum is met.

Your registration fee and $350 fundraising minimum include a custom event t-shirt, on-site bike mechanics, medical staff, police support, rest stops every 10-15 miles, six full meals, wine and beer garden, a great finish line expo, and much, much more. In 2010, the average rider raised $972. Aim high! Riders who raise $1,000 or more will receive a Bike MS: Waves to Wine bike jersey.

Pedaling Perks for Top FundraisersEach year we recognize our Top 150 Club, an elite group of fundraisers who together raised over $614,000 in 2010 to fight MS and our Furious Fundraisers, over 180 riders who together raised over $266,000 in 2010. Both groups are eligible for a variety of extra benefits throughout the year and at the ride. See details on page 11 and at www.wavestowine.org

Under 18 RidersThe minimum age requirement to participate in Bike MS: Waves to Wine is 12 years old. If you are between 12 and 18, however, you will need to provide a notarized waiver prior to your participation in the bike event. You can download a waiver from the FAQ section of www.wavestowine.org or call us and we will mail you a form. In addition, all riders, regardless of age, are required to fulfill the rider minimum of $350 prior to riding in the event.

What is multiple sclerosis?Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving.

Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Most people with MS learn to cope with the disease and continue to lead satisfying, productive lives. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.

Facts about MS• Approximately 400,000 Americans have MS. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not require U.S. physicians to report new cases, and because symptoms can be completely invisible, the numbers can only be estimated.• Worldwide, MS affects about 2.1 million people.• Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although MS has been diagnosed in individuals as young as two and as old as 75.• Nearly three times as many women as men have MS.• Studies suggest that genetic factors make certain individuals more susceptible than others, but there is no evidence that MS is directly inherited.

THIS IS WHY WE RIDE Early and ongoing treatment

with FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for

people with multiple sclerosis. To learn about the options,

individuals should talk to their health care professionals and

contact the National MS Society at nationalMSsociety.org or

1-800-344-4867.

ABOUT THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTERThe Northern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was founded in 1954 and has three offices providing programs and services to 12,000 people living with MS in a 40-county area. The Chapter is committed to helping the thousands of Northern Californians impacted by MS continue moving their lives forward. The Chapter raises funds locally to support the Society’s critical research initiatives and to provide hundreds of comprehensive support services and educational programs to people living with MS, their family and friends.

Where Your Fundraising Dollars GoYour generosity makes it possible to help people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Last year, the Northern California Chapter raised nearly $5 million to support these efforts, with 2/3 of these funds coming directly from special event revenue.

Our Mission: We mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

> We are moving research forward by relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure. > We moving to reach out and respond to individuals, families, and communities living with MS. > We are moving politicians and legislation to champion the needs of people with MS through activism,

advocacy, and influence. > We are moving to mobilize the millions of people who want to do something about MS now.

FUNDRAISING HEADQUARTERSFundraising 101 – everything you need to knowFundraising is the most important part of your participation in Bike MS. All participants are required to raise a minimum of $350 and this minimum must be turned in by the day of the event in order to partici-pate. Riders fundraise in a variety of ways and raised an average of $912 per cyclist in 2010.

A Personal AppealE-mail and traditional letter-writing campaigns are the most successful ways to raise money. You can solicit donations from a variety of sources such as: • family, neighbors, friends, college friends, sorority/fraternity members (holiday card list, e-mail, address book, social networking websites)• colleagues and business associates (e-mail, rolodex, or inter-office mail)

The following are some ideas for a successful letter-writing campaign:• Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your letter if using regular mail. If you are contacting your donors via email, include your name and address to send pledges and/or include a link to your personal Waves to Wine fundraising webpage. Make it easy for your potential donors to respond to you.

• Personalize your appeal by using familiar details about yourself, or your history riding in the Bike MS event. If the donor is not paying immediately by cash, check or credit card, specify a deadline in order to get donations to you in time to receive your prize.

• Follow up with a note, e-mail or phone call to all those who have not responded.

• Always send a thank you note when you receive a donation. After Bike MS, include details about your day, and maybe even a photo to your top donors. Your donors will be curious about your performance.

Asking over the phone and in person are also great ways to make a personal appeal. Additional fundraising tips are available in Fundraising and Prizes section of the Bike MS website: www.wavestowine.org.

Plan a Fundraising EventFundraising events are a popular way for individuals and teams to meet their fundraising goals. Fundraising events may include silent auctions, poker nights, garage sales, bake sales, wine and cheese parties, and other house parties. Many local restaurants will host a fundraiser by contributing a percentage of their sales from a specific night to you. All they ask is that you invite all of your friends and family to dine at their establishment and tell them they are with you when they pay their bill. Contact your favorite eatery to see if they will contribute to your fundraising success!

The Northern California Chapter can support your fundraising events in the following ways:• Sending a staff member to attend your event• Providing materials about multiple sclerosis and the National MS Society. It is important to remember to incorporate the mission of creating a world free of MS into your event.• Providing the Bike MS logo for your events (within our branding guidelines). Please note that all use of the Bike MS or Society logo must be pre-approved by Chapter staff.• Listing your event on the Northern California Chapter’s Facebook page and Bike MS calendar at www.wavestowine.org.

Double Your Donations with Matching GiftsWhat’s better than a generous gift to the National MS Society? A gift that is twice as generous thanks to a third party’s matching gift program!

Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that, in effect, doubles (or in some cases even triples) your gift to the National MS Society. By participating in these programs you and your sponsors can double your dollars and significantly increase the impact that your contribution will make toward creating a world free of MS. Look up a company at www.matchinggift.com.

Companies have various methods by which you can submit your matching gift request: online forms, automated phone systems, or a paper form that you submit to the National MS Society when turning in your pledges. Contact your company’s human resources officer (or if your donor’s company offers matching gifts, have them do the same) to find out your options. They will give you a matching gift application; fill it out and send it to us. We’ll take it from there!

Fundraising ConsultationThe staff at the Chapter has helped thousands of others and will help you reach your fundraising goal! If you are interested in a one-on-one fundraising consultation please contact us. Email [email protected] or 415-230-6677 and we will gladly help support you!

Get to know your bike, learn basic repairs and adjustments, and ride confidently and safely in traffic by taking a cycling class. Many classes provide essential riding skills and techniques to adults and children. For more information and a list of local classes, dates and times visit the Training and Resources section of www.wavestowine.org.

CYCLING RESOURCES Bicycle Maintenance Safety

ChecklistAll cyclists are responsible for keeping their riding equipment in good working order. Get into the habit of checking your bicycle and equipment before every ride. Small adjustments can help ensure a successful finish.

We recommend visiting one of our official bike shops for a complete pre-Bike MS tune up. On the day of the ride, the wait for mechanics at our rest stops can sometimes be very long, and we cannot guarantee that they will be able to completely repair your bicycle and get you back on the road. Please come prepared, carry your own tubes and necessary repair kits, and know how to use them.

∑ Check your wheels for worn tires, loose spokes, warped rims and proper inflation.

∑ Check your handlebar for looseness at the headset and stem.

∑ Check brakes for cable tightness, worn pads and alignment of the pads with the rims.

∑ Check your saddle for seat post bolt tightness and proper fit.

∑ Check for chain looseness and bad links. Clean regularly. Lubricate with bicycle chain lube.

∑ Check the derailleur for worn cogs and adjustment.

∑ Check that your gears change smoothly. ∑ Check your pedals and cranks for tightness. ∑ Check your shoes for tight cleats and straps

and buckles in good repair. ∑ Check your helmet for proper fit and worn

straps.

> ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR A HELMET. > Know and obey all traffic laws: stop at red lights, obey signs, observe speed limits, and follow lane

markings. Cyclists in California have the same rights and responsibilities as motorized vehicle operators. > Look and signal before you move: Always scan behind you before changing lanes or making turns. A

continuous arm signal is required prior to a turn or lane change (unless arm is needed to control the bike) and while stopped waiting to turn.

> Stay right: Ride in the right portion of the right lane and leave at least four feet between your handlebars and parked cars or other hazards such as other users. You may move left when passing slower vehicles or preparing for a left turn.

> Never ride against traffic. Drivers do not expect bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the street. Even in marked bike lanes, ride in the direction of traffic.

> Ride single file and do not impede traffic. > Move all the way to the side of the road if you must stop. > Watch out for metal plates, potholes and cobblestones in the road

which can cause falls. > Bike MS is not a race, ride at your own controllable speed. > Respect Bike MS Ride Marshals and officials on the route. They are there for your safety. > Headphones, cell phones, MP3 players/iPods, radios and similar radio devices are not permitted while

riding. > Hands on the handlebars: Do not carry anything that prevents keeping one hand on the handlebars. > Your bicycle should also be equipped with wheel and pedal reflectors, or other reflective surfaces. > Do not cross the double yellow line.

RULES OF THE ROADKnow the lingoGroup cycling has its own form of communication. The presence of road hazards, directions, and need-to-know information is relayed through the pack of riders by gestures and words. Remember to pass all communication on to the next cyclist behind you in the group. Speak loudly and clearly. The following are the most common terms you may hear in group sponsored rides:

> On your Left: This means a rider is approaching your left side. Allow room to pass.

> Car back: This means a car is approaching from the rear. All riders make an effort to move to the right of the road in a single file until the car passes. In most states, the law requires cyclists to ride no more than two abreast. This ensures that traffic will not be impeded, and will make passing easier and safer for the cyclists.

> Gravel - Pothole - Sand - Tracks: Each of these messages is to alert the riders behind you of hazardous road conditions. The words are combined with the gesture of pointing to the hazard well in advance.

> Flat: This indicates that a rider has suffered a flat tire. Allow enough room for the rider to slow down and move to the right side of the road or trail for repair. Offer assistance if needed.

> Slowing: The cyclist in front of you is slowing down. Use caution and prepare to stop. Many cyclists use the palm of their hand toward riders behind them to indicate slowing and stopping.

> Stopping: This indicates that a rider ahead is stopping. Do not forget to unclip from your pedals, if using.

Additional Safety TipsAt Bike MS events, our active route support team works to make the ride safe. Here are a few additional suggestions to help keep everyone safe on the ride:

> Thumbs down for help: SAG vehicles will stop for you if you are off to the side of the road, off your bike, and giving a “thumbs down” sign or holding your helmet in the air.

> Ride marshal support: A special team of cyclists called Ride Marshals provide support on the rides. They offer minor mechanical help along the route and monitor cycling safety and etiquette to ensure your safety.

> Rest stop etiquette: All cyclists who enter a rest area must pull over, dismount and move completely away from the road and rest-stop entrance. When exiting, move beyond the rest area and proceed with caution on the right side of the road before merging with faster cyclists.

> Passing: Passing others and being passed occurs continuously during the ride. Call out “passing on your left” and allow time for the cyclist being overtaken to move to the right—then pass safely.

> Mechanical problems: Examine mechanical problems and change flats completely off the road. If you have a problem you cannot fix yourself, flag down a SAG van and/or seek a mechanic at the next rest stop.

TRAINING

HydrationBike MS can be a challenging event. It is important to be well-hydrated before, during and after the ride. If you do not drink enough fluids, dehydration can result, causing nausea, muscle cramps, chills and lack of motivation. Dehydration could also lead to heat stroke, a very serious medical condition. To prevent dehydration, use the following general guidelines:

• On all rides you should drink 4-8 ounces of water or sports drink (with carbohydrates) every 15-30 minutes.

• Drink more if it’s hot, humid or you’re really riding hard.

• Sport drinks will help increase your performance, reduce cramps and lessen the possibility of heat stroke. Bike MS rest stops are placed at regular intervals to provide you with plenty of opportunities to eat and drink.

• If you experience extreme fatigue, the inability to recover your energy or frequent muscle cramps, seek assistance from our SAG vehicles or medical crew – you may have the early signs of dehydration.

Bike MS: Waves to Wine will be here before you know it, so it’s important to make sure your body and your bike are ready. The key to making the ride a success lies in consistent training and preparation. Here are some basic step to get you started:

Step 1: Use the Bike MS Online Training Tools at www.wavestowine.org to help you prepare for the ride.

Step 2: Have your bike professionally inspected. All Bike MS participating bike shops can provide routine maintenance or repairs on your bike, as well as expert advice and cycling information.

Step 3: Track your mileage on gmap-pedometer.com. An important part of training is assessing your im-provement.

Step 4: Participate in other organized cycling events and/or rides. You’ll have a much safer and enjoyable ride once you learn the dynamics of group cycling.

Step 5: Make training fun by starting or joining training rides. Local cycling groups and bike shops offer weekly training rides throughout Northern California.

From there, continue along the Sonoma County coast before traveling east into Rohnert Park. On Sunday, traverse beautiful Sonoma County vineyards and apple orchards, and ride through gently rolling hills to the finish at Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park where you will reunite with friends and family and enjoy a hearty dinner and finish line festivities.

Cyclists may elect to ride the following mileage options:• Saturday: 40, 75 or 100 miles.• Sunday: 50 or 75 miles.• Cyclists who choose to ride the 40-mile route on Saturday will begin and end in Rohnert Park at Sonoma

EVENT LOGIsITIcs:Wherearethestart, overnight, andfinishlocations? Please see the Event Information section of this guide, beginning on page 18.

Where can I park on the day of Bike MS and how much does it cost?Parking will be available at both start locations, UCSF Mission Bay and Sonoma Mountain Village. Please check our website frequently in the weeks leading up to the event to find out more about parking information and costs. Note that all cars must be out of the parking lot by Sunday night.

What if it rains?Bike MS takes place rain or shine.

WhatdoIdoifIgetaflattire? We highly encourage all participants to know basic safety and repair skills, including fixing a flat tire. Be prepared and bring your own pump and extra tubes for your bike. However, if you are still unable to make the repair, marshals and SAG vans will accompany riders along all three routes. Should you need assistance, please alert a ride marshal or SAG vehicle. If a marshal is unable to assist you with the repair, a SAG vehicle will take you to a rest stop where mechanical support is available. Please note that the wait for assistance and/or a ride to the nearest rest stop can be long. By waiting, you run the risk of not being allowed to finish the route. To help avoid this, check out our safety and training web pages for information on classes where you can learn basic safety and repair skills.

Is there a minimum age requirement to participate in Bike MS?Yes–riders must be at least 12 years old to participate. Riders under 18 years of age must complete a notarized waiver, which is signed by an authorized parent or guardian, in order to register and must be accompanied by an authorized parent or guardian 21 years of age or older at all times while participating in Bike MS.

As you know, volunteers are an integral part of the success of the event—volunteering is a great way to get your friends and family involved. Please visit the Volunteer section of our website for job descriptions and to register. Additionally, we invite your family and friends to join you at the overnight and at the finish line for the festivities. We will have activities and ample parking at both locations for your family and friends.

I am coming from out of town and want to rent a bike in San Francisco. Do you have any suggestions?Yes, please visit www.baycitybike.com to find out information about renting a bike for the event weekend.

How can I contact the Bike MS staff? You can contact us at [email protected] or 415-230-6677 or 800-344-4867. See the last page of this guide for a full directory.
